This week, I delved into whether to embrace or avoid new APIs in Apple's upcoming operating systems. I encountered a few challenges while working on my Mac iOS app, which I aimed to have a modern look. Inspired by Apple developer videos, I wanted to incorporate features like a navigation split view and fancy backgrounds, similar to the design of CleanMyMac.However, I hit a snag when they were in a part of the app's window. Even AI couldn't solve it. Finally, I found a solution in a video on the Apple developer portal, which involved using modifiers only available in macOS 15. Faced with a choice, I implemented conditional code to keep compatibility with macOS 14 while enabling new features for macOS 15 and beyond.Using conditional code, such as #if available(macOS 15, *), I can target specific OS versions and ensure my app remains functional across different versions without cutting off users. This technique can be applied to various scenarios, not just API availability, making it a versatile tool.Become a Patreon member and help this Podcast survivehttps://www.patreon.com/compileswiftPlease leave a review and show your supporthttps://lovethepodcast.com/compileswiftFollow me on Mastodonhttps://iosdev.space/@Compileswift Thanks to our monthly supporters bitSpectre Arclite ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

You cannot afford to make Backwards Compatibility an after thought. As your system grows, and your user base grows, you are going to continually add new features and services, and some of them will require fundamental changes to your semantics and data structure. Given that, backwards compatibility can get rather challenging but there are steps you can take to mitigate potential issues. #snowpal aws.snowpal.com learn.snowpal.com

Welcome back to another episode of Punching Up! Nintendo has a spotty history of backwards compatibility. We've seen examples where they went above and beyond, like on the Wii with GameCube backwards compatibility, but also completely left the prior console behind, like NES to SNES. However, the world has changed, and we have a glimmer of hope that Nintendo is changing with it. Recently, during a shareholder's meeting, it seems like Nintendo intends to bring our accounts forward with their "next-generation console." Does this mean our games and purchases are safe, or are we doomed to repurchases and upgrade fees? We have a ton more to cover this week too! Everybody 1-2 Switch is a disaster and a baffling release, and new Sega Genesis games have been added to NSO! We also packed in a ton of write-ins. Should you play the original Super Mario RPG before the remake? What would our ideal Switch accessories be? Did we enjoy the Pikmin 4 demo? Listen now and enjoy. Finally everyone is back from vacations! Time to talk games again! GTA 6 has been leaked to the dismay of Rockstar. Surprising no one, Sony is still upset with Microsoft and the Activision Blizzard acquisition. Will Call of Duty become an Xbox exclusive? After much speculation, Sony's revamped PlayStation Service has been revealed. Long gone is the code name Sparticus and what we have left is simply…PlayStation Plus. But don't let the name fool you, this service is all-new, mostly. With multiple options, a soft release window, and a handful of titles announced, we dig into PlayStation's newest offerings for current and legacy generation games in their updated subscription model. Some time ago an action RPG set in the wizarding world of Harry Potter was leaked. Finally, after much anticipation, we have seen real gameplay; approximately twelve minutes worth. Hogwarts Legacy dazzled fans during its proper reveal by PlayStation, which featured in a solo State of Play. We give our first impressions of the long-running franchise's biggest game to date. You have all asked for it and Fortnite has finally granted your wish; you no longer have to build. Simply dubbed “Zero Build”, the world's most popular battle royale is reaching new heights by staying on the ground. Will this get us playing again? Most assuredly not, but we weigh in anyway.
