Keeping the focus on real foods that nourish your body, she walks you through a gentle transition to keto and helps you figure out how to make it sustainable for the long term. Keto Quick Start targets everyday real-world concerns such as what to expect in the first few weeks and how to know if you're on the right track, how to determine if you need more carbs and how to incorporate those carbs in a healthy way, how to customize keto for your personal goals (especially weight loss), and things to be aware of if you're concerned about a particular health issue. We understand that food is fuel but figuring out what fuel is best for us can be challenging. Should we follow a keto diet? Or would paleo be best? What’s the difference? And what are the benefits to being in ketosis? Diane Sanfilippo argues that there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to nutrition, and she encourages a focus on real food rather than getting dogmatic about a single ‘right way’ to eat. Diane is a Certified Nutrition Consultant who specializes in paleo nutrition, blood sugar regulation, food allergies and intolerances and digestive health. She is also the founder of Balanced Bites, an online resource designed to help people live a better life through real food nutrition, and cohost of the Balanced Bites Podcast. Diane is best-known as the New York Times bestselling author of Practical Paleo, The 21-Day Sugar Detox, and coauthor of Mediterranean Paleo Cooking. Her new book, Keto Quick Start, will be released in January 2019. Today, Diane joins us to clarify the difference between the paleo and keto diets and explain what it means to be in ketosis. She shares the benefits of being in ketosis, discussing who might do well on a keto diet and how to adapt it for the long-term. Diane also addresses how fat-fueled athletes could modify a keto diet and why keto is beneficial to many—but not all—women. Listen in to understand why eating whole foods is more important than following a specific diet and learn Diane’s best advice on finding the nutrition plan that feels best for YOU! Topics Covered [1:03] The difference between paleo and keto Paleo involves food choices, quality Keto = eating for specific metabolic state Possible to do both at same time [3:08] The metabolic state of ketosis Rely on ketones as fuel source, not glucose Body naturally shifts to produce ketones [4:17] How many grams of carbs in the keto diet Different from person to person 30-50 grams total [6:27] How to know you’re in ketosis Last longer between meals Mental clarity, improved sleep [7:38] Who might benefit from the keto diet Struggle on high-carb, low-fat diet Feel deprived or don’t enjoy food Type 2 diabetes, neurological or hormonal issues [8:40] How long you should maintain a keto diet Try for 3 months, discontinue if don’t feel good Can adapt for long-term with occasional breaks [11:06] Keto for fat-fueled athletes Need more carbs to replenish glycogen levels May experience headaches, sluggishness in workout [13:44] Diane’s insight on keto for women Beneficial to many women Discontinue if low body temp, irregular menstruation Lifestyle and relationships impact way food works [17:16] Diane’s emphasis on whole foods Misguided to think keto good regardless of food quality Not healthier in long-term if consuming processed foods [20:30] Diane’s favorite go-to keto meals Salads (leafy greens with protein) Lettuce wraps, chicken [22:51] What’s unique about Keto Quick Start Extensive info on choosing healthy fats Presents facts without being dogmatic [30:41] Diane’s best advice on health and nutrition Focus on real food Eat some animal products Give self grace Don’t get dogmatic Learn More About Diane Sanfilippo Balanced Bites Balanced Bites Podcast Diane’s Book Tour Schedule Diane on Instagram Resources Keto Quick Start: A Beginner’s Guide to a Whole-Foods Ketogenic Diet with More Than 100 Recipes by Diane Sanfilippo Practical Paleo: A Customized Approach to Health and a Whole-Foods Lifestyle by Diane Sanfilippo Books by Diane Sanfilippo Books by Leanne Vogel

Use Snapchat? Follow me at: GuyL180 Video Version & Full Transcript: http://180nutrition.com.au/nutrition/diane-sanfilippo-practical-paleo/ Questions we ask in this episode: What does paleo mean to you? Have your views regarding paleo changed at all since your book ‘Practical Paleo’ came out in 2012? Why do so many people struggle to make long-lasting change when it comes to health and good eating habits? How do we create healthy eating habits when our families are not onboard with the changes or have heard negative press regarding the paleo diet? You’re a busy entrepreneur, how do you handle stress? Hey. This is Guy Lawrence of 180 Nutrition. Of course, welcome to this week’s episode of the health sessions where we cut through the confusion by connecting with leading global health and wellness experts to share the best and the latest science and thinking, empowering people to turn their health and lives around. This week, we are doing it with Diana Sanfilippo, who is the best-selling author of this book that I actually happen to have with me, Practical Paleo. Now, this has been dubbed the Paleo Bible by readers everywhere. It came out, I think in 2012 and spent many many weeks on the New York Times’ Bestseller’s list. I think she has sold over 500,000 copies, which is pretty impressive. [00:01:00] If you’re not familiar with Diane, she is owner, founder of Balanced Bites. She is also a certified nutrition consultant and of course the New York Times’ Bestselling Author. She got an impressive resume. It was awesome to have her on the show today. We literally dive into the topics of what does it mean to leave a practical paleo life, how she implements it in her lifestyle and what she has learned since the book has first come out. We get into, she is now releasing a revised edition of the book very soon by the time you’re hearing this podcast. Also, why revise a book as opposed to writing a new one as well. I guess the four years in between, if any reveres a change. We’re getting into all sorts of topics including stress management, her exercise routines and all sorts. It was great. It was awesome to have her on the show. She is definitely a wealth of information and certainly making people think about the way they eat, which is what we are all for. Now, if you are listening to this on iTunes, if you could leave us a review, that would be fantastic. It just helps to spread the word. We want to get people listening to this for free, the reviews help us internationally as well. [00:02:00] By subscribing in it as well, put five stars, so if you are enjoying these podcasts and consuming on a regular basis, a, it would be great to hear from you. Let us know. Also of course, help others find this podcast too. Yeah, we just love getting it out there. Anyway, let’s go over to the show and over to Diane. Enjoy. Guy Hi, this is Guy Lawrence. I’m joined with Stu Cook as always. Hi Stu. Stu Hello mate. Guy Our lovely guest today is Diane Sanfilippo. Diane, welcome to the show. Diane Thanks for having me. Guy [00:03:00] I hope I got the surname correct. Now, before I get into the questions and start hitting you, I have to say, I’ve got your book here. My fiancee absolutely pulls this apart and loves it. I know she is very excited to know that you’re being interviewed today. That’s awesome, mate. It’s incredibly. Now, before we get into the book and everything else that you do, the first question I like to ask everyone on the show is if you were, say, at a bus stop and you were stopped by a complete stranger on the street and asked you what you did for a living, what would you say? Diane I always struggle with that question because I often don’t know how to describe what I do. Typically, these days, I say I’m an author. I write health and nutrition cookbooks, some thing to that effect. It often depends on who is asking and what they might understand. If they’re someone much older who wouldn’t really get the whole online Internet-based business, programs and all of that. Typically, I do say I’m an author and I write nutrition-based cookbooks because that’s the bulk of it at this point, I suppose. She is also cohosts one of the top ten health podcasts on iTunes and one of my favorites, the Balanced Bites Podcast.  Transcript Click here to view the full transcript for #48 Why you need to eat the yolks with Liz Wolfe. About Liz Wolfe Liz Wolfe, of Realfoodliz.com, is a Real Food lover, an amateur homesteader, a natural skincare enthusiast, and a published author. Most importantly, she's got goats. Liz is a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner (NTP) certified by the Nutritional Therapy Association. She co-hosts the top-rated Balanced Bites podcast. She has a regular column in Paleo Magazine. She wrote the Skintervention Guide, based around her experiences healing longstanding skin issues. She's a city gal who went from CrossFit n’ Paleo to Farm Fit n’ homesteading. After spending 4 years in New Jersey, Liz, the Husband and the Pooch moved “back home” to a 15-acre homestead in the midwest. They’ve got goats, chickens, guinea fowl, stray puppies, and lots of crazy wildlife, and soon, 2 hogs. She and her husband are trying to be more sustainable and less stressed, and we’re working on producing as much of their own Real Food as possible. Her New Book! Worry about cholesterol. Avoid red meat. Eat whole grains. Could it all be a lie? We live in an era of health hype and nutrition propaganda, and we’re suffering for it. Decades of avoiding egg yolks, choosing margarine over butter, and replacing the real foods of our ancestors with low-fat, processed, packaged substitutes have left us with an obesity epidemic, ever-rising rates of chronic disease, and, above all, total confusion about what to eat and why. This is a tragedy of misinformation, food industry shenanigans, and cheap calories disguised as health food. It turns out that everything we’ve been told about how to eat is wrong. Fat and cholesterol are harmful to your health? Nope—they are crucial to your health. “Whole grains” are health food? Not even close. Counting calories is the way to lose weight? Not gonna work—nutrients are what matter. Nutrition can come from a box, bag, or capsule? Don’t count on it! In Eat the Yolks, Liz Wolfe debunks all these myths and more, revealing what’s behind the lies and bringing the truth about fat, cholesterol, protein, and carbs to light. You’ll be amazed at the tall tales we’ve been told in the name of “healthy eating.” With wit and grace, Wolfe makes a compelling argument for a diet based on Paleo foods. She takes us back to the foods of our ancestors, combining the lessons of history with those of modern science to uncover why real, whole food—the kind humans ate for thousands of years before modern nutrition dogma led us astray—holds the key to amazing health and happy taste buds. In Eat the Yolks, Liz Wolfe doesn’t just make a case for eating the whole egg. She uncovers the shocking lies we’ve been told about fat, cholesterol, protein, carbs, and calories and brings us the truth about which foods are healthy—and which foods are really harming us. You’ll learn truths like: fat and cholesterol are crucial, not harmful . . . and why - “whole grains” are processed foods . . . and what to eat instead . . .counting calories is a waste of energy and what we actually should be tracking. . . all animal products are not created equal and which ones we truly need . . . nutrition doesn’t come in a box, bag, or capsule . . . and why there’s no substitute for real food! Her Old Book Countless people around the world struggle with skin and body issues of all kinds: acne, eczema, psoriasis, scarring, weak hair and nails, and – most importantly – frustration with commercial products filled with unnecessary, harsh chemicals. Not to mention the confusing territory of dealing with cellulite, anti-aging strategies, intimate care, Are toxic metals causing your fatigue and health issues?
