For this month's episode we've gone back to ten years, only a few years before the podcast began to talk about our favourite songs of 2014, including trve kvlt black metal, avant garde noise, sparkly pop bangers, swedish alt country, & kraut influenced post rock. We also discuss whether Elbow make suitable gym music, global conspiracy theories involving giant stone owls, and songs that sound like you're about to be burned in a wicker man. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Alcest, Alvvays, Babymetal, Devandra Banhart, Beck, Charly Bliss, Elbow, EMA, First Aid Kit, Ben Frost, Grouper, Ben Howard, King Creosote, Jenny Lewis, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, J Mascis, Mayhem, Mogwai, Opeth, Public Service Broadcasting, Röyksopp & Robyn, Run The Jewels, Svalbard, Swans, Taylor Swift, Thou, Ultimate Painting, Sharon Van Etten, Warpaint, & James Yorkston.Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2juBbBjb0YxzF6VMAvNIEi?si=4334ba0599c44034Find our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes (which need updating but I plan on doing them over the next month or so), you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. On this episode of “Death in The Garden,” we talk with filmmaker Julia Barnes and writer/filmmaker Joshua Clinton about their campaign against proposed deep sea mining (DSM) of poly metallic nodules which contain rare earth minerals that can be used in electric vehicles and other “renewable” technologies. You can find more information at their website, Deep Sea Defenders. This podcast is meant to function as an amendment to podcast #12, where we interviewed Dr. Gregory Stone, who is a proponent of DSM. We discuss the destruction of the oceans that will arise from this industrial practice, and the backwardness of destroying the oceans to protect it. Check out this short film Julia made which describes the process as well as Joshua's Counterpunch article. In addition to speaking about deep sea mining, we discuss Joshua's upcoming first film project where he is exposing and protesting the proposed wind farm in Aberdeenshire which will threaten one of the last remaining habitats of the Scottish wildcat, an ancient cat and the last of the wild felids in Britain. In opposition to Vattenfall, the Swedish energy company, Joshua will be interviewing leaders from the organization “Wildcat Haven.” Here's a quote from his Instagram post with more information: “The film will cover the plight of the Scottish Wildcat, the effect of habitat destruction & biodiversity loss on ecosystems, and the collusion between Vattenfall and various Scottish governmental bodies to greenwash the project & ensure that it goes ahead.” We also discuss filmmaking and the processes of making a film about a topic that is deeply unpopular: rejecting the so-called solutions to climate change, as Julia did in her film Bright Green Lies based on the book by Derrick Jensen, Lierre Keith, and Max Wilbert. We talk about greenwashing, discussions about carbon fundamentalism, how environmentalism has been perverted, technological escalation, what it's like to be a young environmentalist, and so much more.
Sam Stafford gets back to 50 Shades basics and enjoys in this episode a gently meandering conversation with some of his friends about planning. Sam could not though resist a typically verbose introduction... ""It is commonly observed”, said Samuel Johnson, “that when two Englishmen meet, their first talk is of the weather; they are in haste to tell each other, what each must already know, that it is hot or cold, bright or cloudy, windy or calm." One could make a case that when two English planners meet, their first talk is of planning reform. In the former case, it is perhaps that, whilst the weather is changeable, the English temperament is not, and passing the time with such platitudinous pleasantries avoids, heaven forbid, the need to have a conversation about anything important. In the latter case, constant talk of reform seems almost like a similar communal comfort blanket. It relegates responsibility for meaningful change to a higher power to enact at some point in the future, absolving the individual, be that an individual political or an individual planner, of responsibility for change in the here and now. And what would Dr Johnson make of the language of reform? ‘Fixing' or ‘solving' something are absolutist terms being applied to something that is not only manifestly subjective, but also, in the case, of housing and the built environment, a function of an entire culture rather than a single regulatory regime. One supposes though that there is not many votes in ‘improving' the planning system or ‘alleviating' the housing crisis… We need to talk about reform, but not for what it might mean in the future. For the impact that incessant talk of it is having in the present…" Shelly Rouse, Principal Consultant at PAS (@Rouse_Shelly); Vicky Payne, planner and urban designer at URBED (@Victoria_Payne); and Paul Smith, Managing Director at Strategic Land Group (@Paul_SLG) try to make sense of that. If you have listened to Episode 45 of the 50 Shades of Planning Podcast you will have heard Clive Betts say that... 'In the Netherlands planning is seen as part of the solution. We've left 1985 behind and blasted forward through time to 2007 where we've been watching Spiderman 3 while queuing up to get our savings out of our Northern Rock bank accounts. We've also been talking about whether KT Tunstall is really as bad as Tracey previously thought, If rollerboots are cool or not, and whether Trent Reznor is a witch. In this episode I talk with Hannah Fisher of Kintra in the Ross of Mull. Originally from Dunkeld, Hannah is a musician who has toured the world with bands including Idlewild and King Creosote, whilst also having a fantastic solo career as one of the most interesting fiddle players and composers around at this moment in time. Irish singer songwriter Seamus Fogarty released his third album A Bag Of Eyes on Domino Records on November 6. We talked just before its release about how it was created, having been borne of the London-based artist "growing weary" of the guitar. We discuss his journey over the past ten-plus years, with detours along the way courtesy of the late Willie Meighan of Rollercoaster Records and King Creosote's Fence Records. A little from the press release: A Bag Of Eyes is a wholly different sonic prospect to 2017's much-lauded The Curious Hand. Weary of the guitar, and seeking something darker than its predecessor, he chose to lean more heavily on synths and drum machines, and additionally, to self-produce. “It was about creating and exploring new sound worlds,” Fogarty says. “Experimenting with new ways of incorporating electronics into the songwriting process, and in some cases dispensing with conventional songwriting processes altogether.” There is industrial judder, slacker-fuzz guitar, a cacophony of saxophones. On one track, ring-modulated drums kick in with oscillating fury. Another moves from 90s' shit-hole grunge venue to sleazy jazz joint in four minutes. Whilst on a third, a synth is deployed with the express purpose of sawing the listeners' ears in half, Fogarty attests. However, beneath them lie fragments of melody, image, drone; a flicker of banjo, an electronic pulse. “I like to purposely make music that clashes with the more traditional stuff that I do,” he says.
On this week's show - a classic from the BBC's Radiophonic Workshop, plus a new one from King Creosote (using modular synths) and introducing a fantastic new band from West Yorkshire - Working Men's Club. Plus Django Django and Spacemen 3.
On this week’s episode Tom, Ben and Paul meet up in Paul’s garage only to realise that the laptop they use for recording wouldn’t work. After trying many different ways of making the podcast Ben was keen to stop, saying they were throwing good money after bad and that the episode was entering a ‘sunk...
The grinding gears of the planning system need to be kept moving. On that most people can agree. Applying a little bit of lubricant within the bits of the system that largely pass the public by, extending consents and flexibility on things like CIL payments, for example, are relatively simple and relatively uncontroversial. What about though those bits of the system that are exposed to the outside world? The bits that rub up against public expectations. How, for as long as social distancing lasts, and indeed beyond, can the public continue to be engaged with the planning system in a way that allows applications and local plans to not only progress, but to progress in ways that are sensible, fair, and perhaps most importantly, lawful. Sam Stafford discusses these issues with Greg Dickson, Director at Barton Willmore; Sarah James, Policy & Membership Development Manager at Civic Voice; and Kevin Whitmore, Head of North & Midlands at BECG. Four behemoths of the current electronic music scene - Max Cooper, Anna Meredith, Holly Herndon, and Jon Hopkins – join the BBC World Service to talk all about creativity. They’ve made some of the most influential music of the 2010s, and that continues into the new decade. Led by Irish composer, producer, and former geneticist Max Cooper, the group discuss how much their subconscious plays a part in their music, their composition likes and dislikes, and – the biggest question of all – the reasons why they became a musician in the first place. Answering those questions are: one of the most innovative voices in British music, the contemporary-classical composer Anna Meredith, who released the album Fibs last year; American composer and sound artist Holly Herndon, who developed her sound in Berlin, and released the excellent album PROTO last year; and keyboardist, producer, and 'sonic technician' Jon Hopkins. Fresh from releasing various offshoots of the album Singularity, he’s been touring the world, and has played with everybody from Brian Eno and Coldplay to King Creosote.

There aren't many things weirder than sitting across from an experienced broadcaster and interviewing him. It's like the tables have turned. Usually Vic's the one doing the interviewing. It's also an experience which is pretty fraught with self-doubt - this guy talks to people for a living and here I am, some fresh out the box, self-styled, new media interloper talking to a guy who has literally thousands of interviews under his belt. How can I compare? Am I being judged? Is this going badly? I should have had more questions. What am I even doing? etc. It's best not to think about it.Vic's an interesting guy who's lived a lot and experienced a lot. Being in his company is an experience which can only be described as kinetic. He exudes a very unique, intense, and passionate kind of energy which is akin to the buzz one used to feel as a kid when you walked into a toy shop.Except for people like us, it's not a toy shop. It's a record shop. And we're not kids anymore. We're grown ass men who love music. From this interview I think you get the sense that Vic just absorbs everything in the world that fascinates him, wide eyed and open armed. It's infectious, sure. But most of all it's pure. There's no pretension. We cover a lot of ground in the podcast, some of the highlights include:His current (and resurrected) band Khartoum Heroes.Growing up with 50s rock n roll and classical music.Adam Ant as a musical turning point.Buzzcocks covers before his voice even broke.Never being discouraged by his parents to pursue an artists' life even if they don't understand the art he makes and enjoys.King Creosote, James Yorkston, his old band Huckleberry playing T in the Park, doing an NME Tour, playing Reading and Leeds, having music played John Peel's and Steve Lamaq's radio shows.Hedonism, perhaps being dead now if he'd have made it at 22.Most artists who are good get better with age.Jim Gellatly and how it used to be much harder to get heard. Alternative music used to be alternative, now it's seeped into the mainstream. How he hadn't thought about journalism at all and how he got involved at the BBC almost by accident. How he just took as many jobs related to music as possible, like doing lights in venues, writing for fanzines, doing PR for labels, putting on club nights, DJing…Choosing not to move to London and deciding to stay in Scotland. The best way to keep your interest in new music is up to keep your interest varied and to mix it up. People get bored of new music because they're not finding the good stuff.Feeling lucky and honoured to have the job he has.Songs in the Key of Fife – how that came about and the bands from Kingsbarns and St Andrews: KT Tunstall, The Pictish Trail, The Beta Band, the Fence Collective, King Creosote, The Withered Hand etc.How Vic got into acting at school, was in the youth theatre and used to run acting workshops in school, how he applied to RADA but rock n roll got his soul. He hopes to go back to it one day…Also discusses how he thinks humans are penned in by themselves and you need to push yourself to have new experiences. If you're interested in something you have to chance your arm and try it.Featured MusicIntro: Voodoo Puppets – Electric Chair Blues (used under CC licence, you can check it out here).Henry Mancini - The Pink Panther Theme,Adam and the Ants - The Day I Met God,The Beta Band - Dry the Rain.I make no claim to the copyright of any of the music in this episode.LinksCheck out Vic's BBC page here for all of his latest shows, podcasts and news. This is the post-Homegame, 'dear Jesus please just let me sleep for a week, good god someone please fetch me a green vegetable' podcast. I can just about keep my head together enough to get through this, but then I have the Monday listings to write and the bloody Francois/This is the Kit/Babe gig to organise tonight as well. Aargh! I also have all sorts of other things to do this week, but after the sort of mind-boggling battering your mind and your liver get at Homegame I am not sure I can face any of it. This summer Ana and I, in preparation for the "great long distance experiment" got to travel a bit around Maine and Canada and Vermont. On one occasion I had a prolonged discussion with a good man, here to be nameless to protect his reputation, about we humans and the big picture and what can be done about it all. It was a real and good pleasure and I hope I hadn't offended him as I usually do when I talk about these things. Anyways - one last thing. I had mistaken Andrew Bird for Bobby Bare Jr. This is because Mr. Bare has a song which is close to my dyslexic heart called "Strange Bird" hence if I have a few in me I start mixing things up in a poor way; like saying that Andrew Bird has a senior version in the country and western scene. That is clearly not the case. Be sure to check out "Strange Bird" it's really good. Anyways this is the short version which made the podcast: 01. Richard Hawley - As the Dawn Breaks 02. The 28th Toadcast is all about the Fence Collective. People who read this site regularly must know them, I assume, but I’ve been intending to do this post for a while as they might be my favourite label in music at the moment. After Kenny Anderson’s last band fell apart about ten years ago or more, he started releasing his own stuff on hand made CD-Rs under the name of King Creosote and between him and his brothers and some of the other local musicians he’d grown up with in Fife, a collective started to form which has grown and grown. Now, thanks to the spotlight cast their direction by Kenny’s brother Gordon’s involvement with The Beta Band and The Aliens, the success of King Creosote and James Yorkston, and the rising of KT Tunstall (also a Fence alumnus, believe it or not) Fence Records have turned into one of the most beloved record labels in the country. And actually, I think their approach of building a community rather than just pimping product might just have the potential to make them one of the success stories of Music 2.0, although that’s another story. So this podcast is all about Fence Records and the bands I have discovered due to their hard work, and why I think they’re great. What an arse-kisser I’ve turned into. (Warning: I’m drunker than I sound and there is way too much talking in this one.) Toadcast #28 - The Fencecast 01. Skuobhie Dubh Orchestra - Our Last Needle (03.17) 02. Back at long last, would you believe. After the abortive attempt at a Christmas podcast and then the IT disaster in Toad Hall - when my retarded computer ground to a halt and had to have its entire operating system reinstalled - I have finally managed to record another podcast. Sorting out the IT department was not at all as easy as it should have been, so it’s taken ages to get to the point where I could record a podcast again. So, excuses over and done with, what am I going to inflict on you this time? The bloody Scots, that’s who. The Scottish music scene is an amazingly fertile one, so I thought I’d review 2007 and have a bit of a look forward to 2008. So I’ve pulled together some of the big guys like Malcolm Middleton, Emma Pollock and King Creosote and interspersed a few of the lesser known acts from around here to give you a nicely rounded look at what’s going on musically in the land of Buckfast and deep-fried Mars bars.
