Richard Freeman returns to the show on this episode as we discuss the recent Centre for Fortean Zoology expedition to Tajikistan on the search for one of the Euroasian mystery cats. The Caspian Tiger's range used to encompass the land from Turkey in the west all the way across southern Asia to the western borders of China, but was sadly declared extinct in 2003. Yet, witnesses claim to have both seen and had encounters with this lost big cat and Richard and his colleagues headed out for the third time to the northern parts of Tajikistan to look for evidence of this beautiful creature's survival against the odds. We head out to discover a cryptid we've never covered before in the company of our good friend Richard Freeman. The Gul of Tajikistan is a hairy bipedal hominid that has been seen for centuries across this mountainous land locked central Asian republic and has a reputation for violent encounters across the region. Richard tells us about the two expeditions he's undertaken with colleagues from the Centre for Fortean Zoology and the witnesses and encounters they heard about. The area is also alleged home to an alleged extinct big cat, the Caspian Tiger, but this is also being reported too. Thank you as always to Richard for joining me this week. A full-time cryptozoologist shares stories of his expeditions around the world tracking the most elusive cryptids! Richard Freeman is an author, former zookeeper, and the Zoological Director for the Centre for Fortean Zoology, who organize international expeditions in search of cryptids which very likely might exist: the Orang-Pendek of Sumatra, living specimens of the Tasmanian wolf, Giant anacondas of the Amazon, and even the Mongolian death worm! Though Richard is a flesh-and-blood cryptozoologist, he is also a fellow Fortean, so along the way we also discuss paranormal activity, light phenomena, high strangeness, and the possibility that numerous cryptids might actually be otherworldly entities, and dare we even say... tulpas! I highly recommend reading Richard's books "Adventures in Cryptozoology - Volumes I and II", which you may find on Amazon ====================== Huge THANK YOU!!! to Richard Freeman for sitting down to speak with a huge fan of his work, and sharing that it is well worth keeping an open, and even paranormal, mind when researching cryptids ❤️ Contact Richard via e-mail at doctor3uk@yahoo.com You can check out the The Centre for Fortean Zoology on their website cfz.org.uk Grab a copy of Richard's books "Adventures in Cryptozoology - Volumes I and II" on Amazon Also check out his earlier book "The Great Yokai Encyclopaedia" on Amazon ...and be on the lookout for his upcoming book "The Highest Strangeness" later this year! ====================== Send us suggestions and comments to tracingowlspodcast@gmail.com Follow us on Instagram @tracingowls or Twitter @TracingOwls Check our Linktree: linktr.ee/tracingowls Intro sampled from "Something strange lurks in the shadows" by Francisco Sánchez (@fanchisanchez) Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com

What is at the bottom of Lake Tahoe? (The Lake Tahoe Monster) *** There is a type of mass murder that draws true-crime connoisseurs like no other… familicide, more often called family annihilation. It is a crime that has invoked horror and fascination in equal measures. Richard Freeman (born Nuneaton, England, in 1970) is a cryptozoologist, author, zoological journalist, and WebTV Presenter. He is also Zoological Director of the Centre for Fortean Zoology (CFZ), and co-edits both the journal, Animals & Men and several editions of the annual CFZ Yearbook. Richard Freeman has written, co-written, or edited a number of books, and has contributed widely to both Fortean and zoological magazines, as well as other newspapers and periodicals, including Fortean Times and Paranormal Magazine. He has also lectured across the UK at events such as the Fortean Times Unconvention, the Weird Weekend, Microcon and at museums such as the Natural History Museum and the Grant Museum of Natural History in London. When interviewed by author Nick Redfern in 2005, Freeman claimed an early obsession with the classic science fiction series Dr Who (with Jon Pertwee) had sparked an interest in all things weird. After school he became a zookeeper at Twycross Zoo in the West Midlands and became head keeper of reptiles, working with more than 400 exotic species from ants to elephants (but with a special interest in crocodilians). After leaving the zoo, he worked in an exotic pet shop, a reptile rescue centre, and as a gravedigger. In 1995, Freeman began studying zoology at Leeds University. Whilst on holiday from the university, he learned of the CFZ and bought a copy of the Centre's journal Animals & Men, which left him impressed enough to subscribe and begin contributing. He eventually became the CFZ's Yorkshire representative and, once the course had ended, moved to Devon to become a full-time member of the Centre. Tonight, my special guest is author and researcher Richard Freeman who's here to discuss his quest to study and possible find creatures of the most monstrous kind. Cryptozoology, the study of hidden, monstrous, and legendary animals, is truly the art of discovering the unknown. Richard Freeman, Zoological Director of Centre for Fortean Zoology, has explored the corners of the five continents in search of creatures that many people believe are non-existent. In this book, he shares the exciting stories of his investigations of the Yeti, Mongolian Deathworm, Loch Ness Monster, Orang-Pendak, Ninki-Naka, and more. Cryptozoologists throughout the years have studied unknown species of reptiles, lake and sea creatures, apes, and hominins. The science and history of this field of study includes examples of creatures that were once thought to be mythological, but that have since been proven to exist. If you're ready to begin your search for Sasquatch and learn to hunt monsters, Adventures in Cryptozoology is your guide. In these pages you'll find: · Tales of mythical, extinct, and out-of-place creatures · Hints about Bigfoot and other ape-men · And tips for equipping your own cryptozoology adventure, including all the gear, field craft, and resources you'll need to record your findings. Scientists discover many new creatures each year, and they’re not all tiny bugs and sea worms, there are big lizards, monkeys and lemurs and sloths, dolphins and rays and species of deer and in 2010 a new species of clouded leopard. All of them existed in our world and we mostly had no idea they were there. Some of these creatures appear to us by chance, they show themselves when we were looking for something different, in places we maybe didn’t expect. Others are searched for more intentionally. Perhaps there existed stories or tales of them from remote villages, or we found traces of evidence from a creature we didn’t yet recognise. Many of them take years and years of painstaking research to finally discover, teams of specialists go into the wild season after season, chasing down leads and reviewing hundreds of thousands of images from trail cameras in the hope of catching a glimpse of the illusive beasts. Not too long ago, a team of specialists knew that Canadian black bears had been coming south, over the border and making homes around the forests of the Pacific North West. Hair and scat was found, very occasionally, but it took the team of highly trained trackers and experts more than five years to actually see them for the first time. Zoological journalist and author Richard Freeman has dedicated his entire life to tracking down some of the more illusive creatures that may, or may not, share the planet with us. As a cryptozoologist, Richard has penned 8 books and holds the role of Zoological Director for the Centre for Fortean Zoology. He has expeditioned to some of the most remote places on the planet in search of cryptids like the Yeti, the Orang Pendek and the Almasty, and made huge strides in his pursuit of the once-presumed extinct Thylacine. Richard joins me tonight to discuss his work and to tell us why we may not have to try that hard to Peer Beyond The Veil. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/peerbeyondtheveil/support

IN THIS EPISODE: Between the years 1925 and 1927, a young teenage girl named Eleonore Zugun from Romania, became the most closely observed, investigated and tested poltergeist victim of the 20th century. Her story is terrifying. (The Romanian Poltergeist Girl) *** When you become a celebrity, you expect certain individuals to go past being fans and into being fanatics. Even stalkers. It’s always been that way. Not even Clark Gable was spared – and one woman named Violet made his life a living nightmare. (Dear Mr. Gable) *** There is a rumor that Jacques Cousteau dove to the bottom of Lake Tahoe and filmed a creature but did not release the film saying that “The world was not yet ready for what’s down there”. What is at the bottom of Lake Tahoe? (The Lake Tahoe Monster) *** There is a type of mass murder that draws true-crime connoisseurs like no other… familicide, more often called family annihilation. It is a crime that has invoked horror and fascination in equal measures. Welcome back to Mysteries and Monsters! On this week's show, I'm joined by Carl Marshall, from the Centre for Fortean Zoology. Carl is an Entemologist but also has a love of cryptozoology, especially the UK's mystery big cats as well as his passion for Micro-Cryptozoology and his upcoming book covering this criminally neglected niche in the world of Cryptids. We cover ABC's, including the Beast of Bodmin amongst others as well as diving into the world of arachnids, snakes and some of the tantalising witness accounts of insects we have no record of ever existing. It's always interesting to cover a subject that we haven't really dove into before and Microcryptids are certainly a subject that we will clearly return to. Mister-Sam Shearon rounds out my team for iNTO THE FRAY. He encouraged me throughout the process of creating the show and is also the brainchild behind my logos, artwork and upcoming merchandise. I am lucky to call him a friend as well as a colleague and will be joining us on our many adventures down the rabbit hole. He has had many interesting personal experiences, a few of which we touch on in this episode. P.S. Send me the emails about your anomalous, large insect sightings. You'll understand why later. But first, Ryan and I discuss big Interstellar news, and then touch on a flying humanoid report out of PA. His work has been described by the British press as "bizarre", "grotesque", "gruesome", and "groundbreaking". Shearon is known for his work in the field of cryptozoology, most notably for compiling artists impressions, of the Beast of Lytham from eyewitness accounts.
