ÁT42  a place for the types of real chats that happen over a cuppa not all structured like a proper interview, just a place to let what is in the space between two creatives come up. The intimacy of a cuppa.... you know that special moment with a friend over tea where the conversation can go anywhere? I couldn't be MORE honoured that my sister Emily Wurramara is coming to chat. Although Emily and I were born on opposite sides of the world, in different decades, and with completely different cultural landscapes, Emily is my person. You know one you call who knows all the parts of you. She understands my music self, my motherhood self, my native language singing self, my cultural self, my survivor self, my warrior self, my vulnerable self, my fun self, my serious self, my activist self, my fuck you self, and DO WE LAUGH at ourselves, yes we do.  She gets all these bits of me cause she IS of the same. We are same same but different and that is the sisterhood we rock. We may not have been born of the same parents, but the universe conspired to ignite our cells the same way.  This podcast is here because I want to bring YOU closer to the conversations that creatives like Emily and I have with each other. The things that don't always make it into our Instagram posts and stage shows. We became sisters after finding each other in a toilet in Brisbane ahead of a show together and supported each other since that moment. She is honest, raw and so talented that it makes me weak and she is one of those quiet leaders who doesn't even know the impact she has on all those that are lucky to be in commune with her. Ye are gonna love her. And if you don't..... ousss ousss!  Can't wait to invite ye into listen to all that brews between us!“Emily Wurramara is one of music's most inspiring Indigenous role models, and it's only up from here” - Beat Magazine"Originating from Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory, the AIR award-winning and ARIA-nominated artist released an 11-track album Milyakburra, educating and informing in both English and Anindilyakwa languages. We had the pleasure of interviewing Small Black over Zoom video! Formed in 2009 as a bedroom recording project, Small Black first made waves with their eponymous debut EP. Recorded in the attic of singer Josh Kolenik’s uncle’s remote Long Island beach house/surfboard workshop, the EP served as an introduction to the group, with its pulsing patchwork of vintage synths and casio beats culminating in the breakthrough single "Despicable Dogs." This track cemented them as pioneers of Chillwave, the sound of which seemed to get its hooks into so much music across the 2010s. The project evolved into a fully-fledged touring act, consisting of Kolenik (vox/keyboards), Ryan Heyner (guitar/keyboards), Juan Pieczanski (bass/guitar), and Jeff Curtin (drums), and this live influence showed up in their debut LP on Jagjaguwar, 2010's New Chain. The loopy, weeded-out album found the band messing around with hip hop drums & samples, which they further explored on 2011's Moon Killer mixtape, collaborating with rapper Heems & remixing their own material through this kaleidoscopic lens. Years of hitting the road hard sent the band after a brand new sound & aesthetic with 2013's beloved Limits of Desire. Chasing the 80s pastiche of The Blue Nile & Talk Talk, SB upped their production chops, writing, recording & mixing the record from scratch, with the anthemic "No Stranger" & "Breathless" leading the way. Punctuated by the incredible visuals of directors Nick Bentgen and Yoonha Park, it was a huge step forward for the project. 2015's Best Blues, led by "Boys Life," followed further down this sophisti-pop path, adding more organic flourishes, choral samples & a little goth energy into the mix. 2020 finds Small Black back in the game with a brand new label, the vaporwave upstart 100% Electronica. Working again with mixer Nicolas Vernhes, the band’s new record, Cheap Dreams is out now! We want to hear from you! 2016 LA Critics Award winner for Best Blues Artist, Best Female CD (Album: Long Road) and Fan Favorite! In mythology, Sirens were dangerous yet beautiful creatures that would lure sailors with enchanting songs and make them crash onto the rocky coast. It is said that some crews survived by using wax in their ears to keep from being compelled. But what if the music was turned up? What if it was amplified? What if there were soaring guitar tones that shook your bones and cut through to your soul? You’d be helpless. Get ready to meet your fate with Diana Rein on her magnetic Indie Blues sophomore album “Long Road”. See if you can escape the artist named "the Six String Siren" by her adoring fans. With a sharp tongue, driving blues guitars and melodic solos — it won’t take long before you fall under her spell. Born in Romania and raised in Chicago, Diana came onto the scene as an acoustic rhythm guitar player in her hometown with the release of her first album of 8 originals "The Back Room". "On Long Road, Diana Rein doesn't just show off her incredible guitar playing, which is reminiscent of Stevie Ray Vaughan with a sprinkling of Buddy Guy & Jimi Hendrix, but also her powerful voice !! Killer Vocals, Killer Guitar, Killer Rock !! With music like this, Diana's Rein as "Queen of Blues/Rock" will be a long one !! " - Michael Trike McGrath of Trike's Trax It wasn't long before she was doing solo and band shows all around Chicago including venues like: The Double Door, Fitzgerald's, Joe's Bar, Lucille's, festivals, college shows and playing a set at The Taste of Chicago right before Bonnie Raitt hit the main stage. Diana is also working on a solo project/one woman band show that will be an intimate treat for her fans. Her music is saturated with the Blues at its core and infused with guitar driven Rock and Roots.

Rory Block returns to The Couch to talk about her latest release, Keepin’ Outta Trouble, the sixth album in her “Mentor Series” saluting the blues masters who’ve had a profound impact on her music. This time she pays tribute to Bukka White.  Rory will be making her third appearance on The Couch and we’ll talk about the music. Jason Elmore takes a seat with me to discuss his journey and the new album from he and the Hoodoo Witch, Champagne Velvet.  This is the third release for the band from Dallas who won “Best Blues” in 2012.  Jason and I will talk about his winding journey, putting the band together and where they are heading with this new release. Mitch Kashmar has just released his third album on Delta Groove entitled West Coast Toast.  The two-time BMA nominee honors the unique sounds of the west coast on this album.  I am looking forward to speaking with Mitch and learning of his journey and influences and what he sees in his future. Stevie J is an original Couch Kid having sat here back in January of 2011.  He is now about to release a new album entitled Back 2 Blues and as we listen to the tunes, we’ll find out what has been happening in Stevie’s life.

This show is highlighting a number of the songs featured on a critic's poll conducted by the great blues magazine, , that selected “The Decade's Best Blues, 25 Great Albums That Defined The Past 10 Years.”   Well, I started off the show with playing their tune “Something's Wrong” off of the 23rd ranked CD called Lowdown Feelin'. I then followed up with their great Howlin' Wolf tune, “Chocolate Drop.”   So, who else is on the list of the best 25 CDs? Well, I can't play them all in an hour, but we'll hear 19th ranked playing “Hard Times” off their self-titled CD. Corey Harris & Henry Butler follow up ranked 18th with “If You Let A Man Kick You Once” that was on the CD, Vu-Du Menz. gets a little Coco Montoya help on his tune “A Good Man Is Hard To Find” from his 17th ranked CD, Painkiller. At number 16, is cranking out two tunes, “You Make Me So Angry” and “Fill ‘Er Up” from their offering called Play It ‘Til Tomorrow. We then are treated with The Holmes Brothers (ranked 13th) with “We Meet, We Part, We Remember” from the CD, Simple Truths.Shaking the house at number 11 is Lil' Ed & the Blues Imperials playing “Tired of Crying” off the CD, Rattleshake. We then journey all the way to number 5 with the beautiful Koko Taylor belting out two great songs, “Gonna Buy Me A Mule” and “Piece of Man” from the Old School CD.
