Dennis connects via Zoom with musician Greg O'Conner to talk about his debut album The Place I've Never Been and what it's been like to venture out as a solo artist after decades of writing songs and scores for TV and movies. Greg talks about what inspired him to take such a big swing in his mid-50's, the artists that inspired him like Toto, The Beach Boys, Steely Dan and Bleu, finding collaborators on Facebook and Instagram and posing on a hillside with a piano and live bull for the album's striking cover art. Greg also talks about the real-life experiences that inspired the album and videos, like being ghosted by someone he'd been dating for a while and subsequently falling in love with his fiancé, photographer Kevin Sikorski after meeting on Hinge. He also talks about his extensive work in TV and film, writing music for recent films My Home Unknown and Baby Boomer Yearbook (directed by Grease's Randal Kleiser) and TV shows like The Ben Stiller Show, The Big Gay Sketch Show and MadTV, for which he won an Emmy. Other topics include: falling in love with music at four, writing the viral song "Laura Dern" for the Independent Spirit Awards a few years back, shooting two music videos in one day in Capetown, South Africa and being closeted at USC and waiting in line outside of the Mother Lode bar in West Hollywood and being terrified someone would drive by and see him. www.GregOConnor.com

Meet Kate McKinnon, one of Saturday Night Live's greatest "most valuable players" in this miniprogram. From early work in a college sketch troupe, to a breakout role in The Big Gay Sketch Show, Kate next made the leap to Saturday Night Live where her versatility and mimicry made her a legend. At the same time, Kate began to establish herself in movie comedies including the all-female Ghostbusters reboot and this year's smash hit Barbie in which Kate plays -- you guessed it -- "Weird Barbie". As always find extra clips below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Kate? Kate was a treat as Weird Barbie in 2023's smash Barbie movie. Here's a sample. https://youtu.be/66cMkxolaHM?si=y6mZX9IgwlJwASw3 One of Kate's standout characters from SNL was Colleen Rafferty, a woman with unusual alien encounters! https://youtu.be/OuRnPvJe7C8?si=2o1PEDqMNN7ebHOM One of Kate's best SNL impressions was Trump advisor and "fake news" inventor Kellyanne Conway, here envisioned in a therapy session with husband George. https://youtu.be/0B96ZM3C-h4?si=rmFi9lvHGxANyC7g Kate's versatility allowed to play both female and male roles -- such as her take on Covid guru Dr. Anthony Fauci. https://youtu.be/IqgyBN0OIns?si=A4bw-XYnxjdaqOTm This one is delightful. Dennis is joined via Zoom by actor-writer-director Craig Chester to discuss the upcoming 18th Anniversary screening of his gay rom-com Adam and Steve, which is happening on August 31st at the Mary Pickford Theater in Palm Springs. Craig shares memories of making the movie, including how he had to take over as director just a few weeks before filming, how he burst into tears after shooting the film's big, show-stopping western-themed dance number and what it was like to work with Malcolm Gets, Parker Posey and Chris Kattan. He also talks about his career as a TV writer, working on the series True Blood--where an episode he wrote pissed off both Ted Cruz and Sarah Palin--and he also shares his thoughts on the current writers strike. Dennis and Craig also share memories of working together on Logo's The Big Gay Sketch Show in 2009. Craig also opens up about his journey to sobriety last year after losing virtually everything to crystal meth addiction. Other topics include: the power of dream boarding, the wisdom of Wilson Phillips, living in a 55+ community in Palm Springs, oversharing on Facebook, how getting Monkey Pox saved his life, getting help when he really needed it from folks like Stephen King, Jackie Beat, Illeana Douglas and Kate McKinnon, what it was like to be a 90's indie darling in films like Swoon, Grief and Frisk, and how he sometimes feels like a gay Forrest Gump.
The Showrunner in television literally runs the show, like a hands-on CEO: In charge of vision, creative (often the head writer), leading (and inspiring) a crew of hundreds, managing multiple agendas from the network to the legal department, marketing and advertisers while putting out daily fires and tapping into the personal magic that earned them the role in the first place. Sharing all his wisdom on the subject is Jim Biederman, seasoned Showrunner, Executive Producer, Writer and Director specializing in comedy programming with a list of trailblazing credits including Kids In the Hall, the Howard Stern Radio Show, The Whitest Kids You Know, the Onion News Network, The Big Gay Sketch Show and Would You Rather With Graham Norton (where I had the distinct pleasure of being Jim's Talent Executive) This is really and truly a masterclass: Ask questions Listen more, speak less Show respect Protect your staff Never respond right away to the notes from the network Get comfortable with tough choices and difficult conversations Learn to bounce back early from failure TV is global Be curious and learn to work across language and cultural differences We can all earn something from The Joy Act, a standard feature in Chinese programming (it's not what you think!) Successful showrunning is so much about the power of language and how we communicate. Jim's goal is to always make sure that everyone working on the show feels welcome and valued at the table. And this: You don't need to be aggressive about it. You can just say, I think there's another way to solve this problem. (It dawned on me listening to this episode that with the amount of negotiating and compromise required to get a show on the air...Showrunners could be useful mediators in global conflicts.) Dennis heads to Burbank to interview playwright Erik Patterson and actor Stephen Guarino about "Handjob," Erik's about a gay writer who hires a shirtless cleaner. Erik talks about the time he hired a real shirtless cleaner, how he realized it could be a play and later inviting the real cleaner to see the play he helped inspire. Stephen talks about what appealed to him about the project, the challenge of finding flawed, three-dimensional roles, and performing the title act in front of an audience. They both talk about what it's like to be an artist today when people are more in tune around issues like representation, privilege, race and consent. Together, they talk about the wide-ranging reactions to the play, the ins and outs of ordering prosthetic penises, on stage nudity rules, the long list monologue that Stephen makes his bitch, Google stalking and the gulf between their Hollywood careers and the world of this play. Other topics include: Erik's writing for Hallmark movies, the challenge of getting Hollywood people to come see the show, the Glenn Close sketch Dennis wrote and Stephen starred in on The Big Gay Sketch Show, Stephen working with producer Jim Carrey on I'm Dying Up Here, the time Erik crashed the Golden Globes, and Stephen almost meeting Jennifer Saunders and wanting to live in a cinder block like The Secret of Nymh. https://www.echotheatercompany.com/handjob/

Jonny McGovern is back on OUTSpoken & Talking with Sex is Back – Damon Jacobs Will Help Answer your Questions 2016-4-17OUTSpoken“HEY QWEEN”, THE GAYEST TALK SHOW OF ALL TIME, GETS A MAKE-OVER FOR ITS FOURTH RAUCOUS SEASON January 25, 2016 – NEW YORK: Hey Qween!, the world’s gayest talk show of all time, is getting a face-lift this winter. When the show returns for its fourth season next month, it will debut a sexy new look and sound. For three hilarious seasons, comedian Jonny McGovern and his co-host Lady Red Couture have welcomed many of the countries top LGBT and drag talent − including RuPaul, Laganga Estranja, and Candis Cayne − to their couch. On February 15th,Hey Qween! launches its fourth raucous season ontheStream.tv. “Hey Qween! is a place for gay stars and underground legends to come and tell their stories in a way they can’t on any other talk show,” explains host and executive producer, Jonny McGovern. “We cut up, have a kiki and a gay ‘ol time. Then, at the end of every show, the special guest gets a trophy and a lap dance from one of our in-house strippers! It’s a half hour of pure merriment.” “You don’t have to be gay to be on Hey Qween!,’ he adds. “Just gay friendly and ready for fun.” Lots of changes are in store for the upcoming season of Hey Qween! including a brand new set and the addition of a regular cast member. Billboard charting vocalist Adam Joseph joins the gang as bandleader of “Adam Joseph and The Go To Bed Wigs”. “For years our show has been called The Tonight Show if Johnny Carson was a big gay lumberjack and Ed McMahon was the largest drag queen in captivity,” continues McGovern. “Now we got a glittery twink version of Doc Severinsen.” Adam Joseph has a long association with Jonny McGovern. He is the voice of the Hey Qween! theme song and the music producer behind all of McGovern’s albums. The addition of a bandleader will mean more music parodies and comedy to the show. Also new will be a series of “Drag Besties” episodes, kicking off with Detox and Vicky Vox of the Drag supergroup DWV. Fan-favorite segments returning this season are “Betta As a Bitch Track”, where the show trolls the trolls, turning real life negative comments from the Internet into over-the-top “bitch tracks” and the “Look At Huh!” game, where guests share their personal stories of celebrities. Jonny “The Gay Pimp” McGovern’s career began in 2003 with Dirty Gay Hits, a collection of hilarious gay themed songs. The video release of “Soccer Practice” from the album received over three million downloads and was added to rotation on MTV Europe and MTV Asia, making Jonny an international phenomenon. Soon, he was appearing all over the airwaves, on The Ricky Lake Show, VH1’s Best Week Ever, Comedy Central’s Out on the Edge, and more. Jonny eventually caught the eye of Rosie O’Donnell, who cast him as a lead player on her LOGO-TV comedy show, The Big Gay Sketch Show. “Working with Jonny is one of the joys of my life,” says Lady Red Couture from the Hey Qween! set in Hollywood. “He’s so sweet. I’ll never forget when RuPaul came to visit and we were filming the opening banter and I messed up. So Jonny says, ‘Don’t be nervous because RuPaul is here.’ Then RuPaul says, ‘DO be nervous because RuPaul is here!’ Oh, I wet myself laughing!” “We’ve become the best of friends making Hey Qween!“ reflects Jonny McGovern of his relationship with Lady Red Couture. “She’s such a quick wit and naturally funny. People think that because I’m executive producer of the show, I also direct her. You don’t ever make Lady Red do anything. If she’s eating on the show, its cause the bitch wants a snack! I just let Lady Red be herself and that’s more than enough.” Hey Qween! has been so successful for theStream.tv, the online network launched the show as its own YouTube channel and has plans to launch a stand-alone website. The show has also spawned several spin-offs, including the Look At Huh! aftershow that began airing last spring. In March, theStream.tv will begin airing the second seasons of: Judge Lady Red, a court show with Lady Red presiding over the disputes of young queens and deciding whether it’s ‘Shade’ or ‘No Shade’; He’s Fit, a parody of fitness shows starring lap dancer Greg McKeon as he competes in flex battles against Instagram hotties; and Hot T, a bi-weekly gossip show with Julie Goldman and Brandy Howard (from Bravo’s The People’s Couch) breaking down the hot topics of the week. A new advice show, Hey Qween Can I Axe You A Question?, will premiere later this season. “We’re thrilled to bring back Hey Qween! for a fourth season,” says theStream.tv’s Susan Wrenn. “Jonny and Lady Red are both so talented and passionate about what they do. Their creativity inspires everyone here at theStream.tv.” Look for Jonny McGovern and Lady Red Couture this summer when they host Pride Festivals and bring their Hey Qween!nightclub show to cities across the country. The fourth season of Hey Qween! begins airing February 15th on theStream.tv. ————————————– WELCOME! Also on the docket: her obsession with Joan Rivers, the difference between lesbians and gay guys when it comes to supporting their artists, the perils of hooking up with fans and the gay cruise she'll never forget.

Ahoy! The 99th episode of How Was Your Week features comedienne and adorable relative of Chris and Abby Elliott, BRIDEY ELLIOTT! She is extremely charming and funny in her own right, and we are delighted that she stopped by to discuss the time Ryan Gosling checked out her heiney, what she tells people her favorite TV show is, how she sleeps when her sister is in town, and what a sewing teacher told her to do when she toppled a coatrack. Then, actor and playwright COLMAN DOMINGO is here to tell us about booking a part in LINCOLN, what it was like working with Don Johnson on Nash Bridges (it was not so great!), and what his experience was when he collaborated with Julie on BIG GAY SKETCH SHOW together. Also, Julie has a hunch about what the new season of SMASH will specifically be, recaps the latest episode of FACE OFF, contemplates folk art as a metaphor, and offers cat magazine decorating tips for a new office of one's own. Plus: an artful cover of the Intervention song! A new theory about The View! Some thought about DC and its wonks! And the debut of a new character called Annoying Woman At A Restaurant. A 99th episode fit to be paired with 99 bottles of beer you should imbibe while listening to it, after taking them down from the wall and passing them around!
