Laundering Black Rage: The Washing of Black Death, People, Property, and Profits (Routledge, 2024) examines the dilution and commodification of Black Rage--conceived as a constructive response to the conquest of resources, land, and human beings--in a spatial and historical critique of the capitalist State. Interweaving academic criticism with journalistic essays, it presents a thoughtful challenge to popular narratives surrounding recent US events such as the Black Lives Matter movement, the death of George Floyd and other police killings, and cases of White vigilantism, arguing that the maintenance of capitalism increasingly requires the manufactured consent of the conquered. Essayist/performer Too Black and geographer Rasul A. Mowatt assert Black Rage as a threat to the flow of capital, which must therefore be conquered by laundering, defined as a process of: - Incubation via the State, which places rage in circulation by setting both the oppressive conditions for its expression and seeding contradictions for it to be cleaned. - Labour, which sets mass uprisings in motion, layers the narcissistic rage of the Black elite over the illegal, militant rage of the masses to conceal class interests and collapse labour into capital. - Commodification, in which the now-laundered Black Rage is integrated within the State, ready to be withdrawn as a labour-crushed commodity to be bought, sold, or repressed by White capital. Entwining histories of Black resistance throughout the diaspora, State building under capitalism, cities as sites of laundering, and the world making of empire, Laundering Black Rage also lays the groundwork for upending the process through an anti-colonial struggle of reverse-laundering conquest. Relevant to studies of race and culture, history, politics, and the built environment, this pathbreaking work is essential reading for scholars and activists engaged at the intersection of critiquing capitalism and combating systemic racism"-- Too Black is a low-wage worker, poet, organizer, and filmmaker. What does it mean to understand laundering in the context of how Black rage often gets converted to fit the interests of capital — against the very people experiencing that anger as a response to state violence? How do we remain cautious of different forms of co-optation, including through the arts, that end up distancing people from the material conditions that originally sparked the rage?In this part one of our two-part conversation, we are honored to welcome the co-authors of Laundering Black Rage, Rasul A. Mowatt and Too Black — who guide us to critically reflect on key happenings in the aftermath of the killing of George Floyd — and more recently, the murder of Sonya Massey.Join us in this vital and sobering dialogue as we discuss how activism for social causes is often subverted, redirected, and laundered into forms deemed palatable by the state — only to be fed back into reinforcing the system itself. We also explore how cities, to be distinguished from “society”, are set up inherently as sites of extraction — enforcing complicity by design. How do we confront our entanglement in such processes of laundering — while staying focused on the types of efforts that can more directly address the sources of systemic harm?www.patreon.com/greendreamer

Rasul Mowatt and Too Black join Breht to discuss their new book Laundering Black Rage: The Washing of Black Death, People, Property, and Profits. The book is a spatial and historical critique of the capitalist State that examines how Black Rage—conceived as a constructive and logical response to the conquest of resources, land, and human beings racialized as Black—is cleaned for the unyielding means of White capital. Interlacing political theory with international histories of Black rebellion, it presents a thoughtful challenge to the counterinsurgent tactics of the State that consistently convert Black Rage into a commodity to be bought, sold, and repressed. Laundering Black Rage investigates how the Rage directed at the police murder of George Floyd could be marshalled to funnel the Black Lives Matter movement into corporate advertising and questionable leadership, while increasing the police budgets inside the laundry cities of capital - largely with our consent. Essayist/Performer Too Black and Geographer Rasul A. Mowatt assert Black Rage as a threat to the flow of capital and the established order of things, which must therefore be managed by the process of laundering. Intertwining stories of Black resistance throughout the African diaspora, State building under capitalism, cities as sites of laundering, and the world making of empire, Laundering Black Rage also lays the groundwork for upending the laundering process through an anti-colonial struggle of reverse-laundering conquest. Relevant to studies of race and culture, history, politics, and the built environment, this pathbreaking work is essential reading for scholars and organizers enraged at capitalism and White supremacy laundering their work for nefarious means. Understanding Cultural Mistrust - with Dr. Andrea Holman

In Episode 84, host Dr. I. David Daniels speaks with Dr. Andrea Holman about the concept of “Cultural Mistrust.” Cultural mistrust is a feeling of suspicion toward people from a culture that is perceived as dominant. It can be caused by the lived experience of being treated in a way that the target of the behavior perceives as threatening or harmful. Cultural mistrust can also be described as the tendency to distrust others in personal, institutional, or social contexts. Most of the research into this concept has focused on Cultural mistrust as an adaptive attitudinal stance in which a person of color is suspicious and guarded toward European Americans, particularly European American authority figures. It is adaptive in that if one accepts the contention that the current social paradigm is inherently racist, then a person of color cannot assume that a European American person has his or her best interests at heart. This attitudinal stance was first described in William Grier and Price Cobbs's classic book, Black Rage. Grier and Cobbs called this survivalist stance cultural paranoia. Many writers later changed the term to cultural mistrust to emphasize that it is an adaptive strategy rather than a form of psychopathology. Dr. Holman researched the concept and utilized what she learned as an academic, psychologist, and DEIB Senior Manager. In this conversation, she shares her understanding of the concept and her thoughts about how it impacts how people show up at work and how the workplace can be designed and managed as a safe place and space for all.

For part 2, we delve deeper into part 2 of co-host Too Black's essay, "Laundering Black Rage." We cover the three phases in which Black Rage is laundered to serve white capital via the state. We explore how the tragedy of Black Death is used to funnel Black Rage into commodity form. Throughout this process, we note how class interests within the African diaspora are fundamental to laundering Black rage into a flattened form. In our modern time, Black Rage becomes situated around Black celebrities and upper-class interests thereby cleaning Black Rage of it's militancy. We hope this analysis helps our listeners understand how Black Death cannot by itself explain why people are profiting and/or benefitting from the struggle.  Pt. 1 https://blackagendareport.com/laundering-black-rage  Pt. 2  https://www.blackagendareport.com/laundering-black-rage-part-2 Patreon patreon.com/blackmyths

In this episode, we discuss the (partial) myth of profiting off Black Death. Although Black Death is certainly profitable, the claim is often an incomplete critique that misses other critical elements driving the profit—particularly, Black Rage. Using the recent essay published by co-host Too Black—"Laundering Black Rage"—as a framework, we investigate how regularly Black Death occurs and how many of the opportunities created to profit and benefit from Black Death are also generated by exploiting Black Rage. Without Black Rage and the labor that follows there would not be money for an organization like BLM global to hoard, book deals to cash in on, or diversity jobs to fill. More broadly, we discuss how money laundering functions via capitalism and thus precipitates the laundering of Black Rage to ultimately serve the class interests of white capital via the State. By understanding crucial the role Black Rage plays in this process the better we can recognize our own agency in reverse-laundering it.  Laundering Black Rage Pt. 1 https://blackagendareport.com/laundering-black-rage Pt. 2 (We will discuss this in part 2 of the series) https://www.blackagendareport.com/laundering-black-rage-part-2 Patreon patreon.com/blackmyths

Too Black is a poet, member of Black Alliance For Peace, host of The Black Myths Podcast which can be found on Black Power Media, he's a writer, and he is the communications coordinator of the Campaign to Free the Pendleton 2.  Here is part 1 of the conversation. We continue our conversation of “Laundering Black Rage” in this episode. In this part we talk about neocolonialism. We talk about class distinctions and some of the impacts of so-called desegregation, which did not really desegregate US society, but did make certain internal borders more porous to Capital, markets and elites. In that context we have some discussion about struggling against local elites or against elite capture. Too Black also offers some valuable insights on how people have been socialized in this neocolonial era. This conversation also includes about a 25 minute back and forth between Too Black and J about the way Too Black theorizes the state. While not a debate, there is some distinction between the two points of view that we seek to clarify in discussion. Ultimately there is a lot of overlap, but a slightly different conceptualization. We hope folks enjoy listening to us grappling with this theorization together. For an update on our October campaign. October marks the 5 year anniversary of MAKC. Too Black is a poet, member of Black Alliance For Peace, host of The Black Myths Podcast which can be found on Black Power Media, he's a writer, and he is one of the organizers of the Campaign to Free the Pendleton 2.  In this conversation we welcome Too Black to discuss his recently published 2 part essay “Laundering Black Rage” (part 1, part 2) which we will link. The essay was published at Black Agenda Report. It's a provocative analysis of the process through which Black Rage gets laundered towards other ends. The piece looks in particular at this process through the recent example of the 2020 uprisings, but it also looks at other examples. More than just a guest, Too Black is an interlocutor of ours. We've worked together on the Journalism For Liberation & Combat series (audio, video). We've had conversations about organizing and about theory that go beyond the bounds of podcast work. Due to length we split the conversation in two parts. Part 1 mostly covers the basic themes of the essay and the structure of the process of “Laundering Black Rage,” part two is a little more conversational, but there are conversational elements in both. Most importantly we will include a Link Tree for the campaign to Free the Pendleton 2 in the show notes, please check it out, and if nothing else sign the petitions, but I also encourage you to check out some of their media work, and to see if there's some way you can get involved or support the campaign. Free The Pendleton 2 Campaign Link Tree. We also encourage you all to check out The Black Myths Podcast, they have some excellent conversations, with many guests you'll recognize from our platform as well. And support them on patreon as well. Also shout-out to our friends over at Black Power Media who host the Black Myths Podcast videos. Support that work as well. And lastly for an update on our October campaign. October marks the 5 year anniversary of MAKC. We are trying to add 50 patrons this month. Currently we've got 22 new patrons for the month, so we're almost half way to our goal as we approach the half-way point of the month. You can kick in $1 a month or more and support the sustainability of this show at patreon.com/millennialsarekillingcapitalism. Additional notes: In conversation there's a mention of a Kali Akuno video.

None of us are above the capacity to hate. It's sometimes easier to point a finger and judge people or groups who are different than us and hate them and blame them for how they live and move in the world. With all the love that we are capable of, we hold that same capacity to tear down those in our same species, in the futile effort to make ourselves feel better. In this weeks episode, I explore the concept of hate. Where it originates in our development, how it can show up, and what we can begin to do about it in our lives. At the end, I share a practice that we know and love that helps when coming to consciousness about our ability to hate and next steps to take on our shadow path. Ms. Bukasa's role is not only limited to her organization, but she carries many hats of a storyteller, her function in the community, and her job working as an Early college specialist in the Northeast Denver high schools precisely in the Montbello area. She talked about the lack of resources and support for minorities. In 2009, Ms.Busaka and her family emigrated from Zimbabwe as a refugee to the USA, precisely in Denver, Colorado, and the challenges she faced growing up as a kid going to school and how her parents lacked the money to pay her school fees. Ms.Bukasa talked about her role as a founder and director of a non-profit organization called Education for Afrika. She started to provide aid to Congolese women back to her home country of DRC. She has taken on new challenges to mentor African students with partners with Northeast high schools. Therefore, Ms.Bukasa pointed out that women are not educated and placed at the bottom of the society in Africa. The challenge she faces is finding the right people to run her organization back home and the lack of support in the community. The damage of sexual harassment in the community. Parents always try to cover the problem by saying things like "Trust in the Lord." In the last part of the interview, Ms.Bukasa revealed that her book story is connected to her own experience and dealing with a betrayal from a close friend. Should we blame the girls for her dress?

Ever experienced something odd you couldn't explain? A bizarre encounter with a strange being or unknown object whipping across the horizon?Just like the US government, we can no longer collectively ignore the physics-bending elephant in the sky.For decades, the sighting and documenting of UFOs has been a common occurrence.  Most people are aware of the famous alleged crash in Roswell, NM in 1947, or the biblical story of Enoch and the Watchers, or the ancient Sumerian legend of Nibiru and the Anunnaki. However, these stories were always treated in the mainstream as just crazy, crack-pot conspiracies... until now. What could this mean for society?  What mind bending new possibilities lay in wait for this fragile existence known as humanity? While some people eagerly clamor in excitement for the dawning of this new frontier of bright opportunity spawning from the global revelation that we are not alone in the universe.  Drew, however, is a little more skeptical of this new narrative suddenly being embraced by the corporate media, who had once ridiculed and mocked those that even entertained the idea of extraterrestrial life.  Though not totally closed to the possibility of UFO disclosure being legitimate, he still clings to that  classic X-Files trope- "I want to believe".Markus, meanwhile, is just tripping out on the wormhole of ramifications of UAPs and WAPs... Honestly, he has a hard enough time with terrestrial life. What are these lights in the sky? Why is the government and media suddenly flipping the script on UFOs? Are we alone? You decide.***LINKS:Danger?Reagan Alien Invasion  SpeechNorwegian SpiralPhoenix LightsDome of the RockNaval video"Black Rage!""Well, they pee out there fingers"Bill Cooper- Wikipedia The Man Who Knew Too MuchTom DeLonge-Podesta Emails/ WikiLeaksTo The StarsProject Blue BeamIntel's 500 drone light show***CONTACT US:Link TreeSupport the show (https://paypal.me/phase2phase?locale.x=en_US)

Just in time for the election, Entrepreneurial Appetite, BEST San Antonio, and The Heman Sweatt Center for Black Males bring you a very special book discussion about The Defeat of Black Power Civil Rights and the National Black Political Convention of 1972 by Leonard N. Moore, PhD.About the Book:"For three days in 1972 in Gary, Indiana, eight thousand American civil rights activists and Black Power leaders gathered at the National Black Political Convention, hoping to end a years-long feud that divided black America into two distinct camps: integrationists and separatists. While some form of this rift existed within black politics long before the 1968 assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., his death—and the power vacuum it created—heightened tensions between the two groups, and convention leaders sought to merge these competing ideologies into a national, unified call to action. What followed, however, effectively crippled the Black Power movement and fundamentally altered the political strategy of civil rights proponents. An intense and revealing history, Leonard N. Moore’s The Defeat of Black Power provides the first in-depth evaluation of this critical moment in American history.About the author:Leonard N. Moore is the Vice President for Diversity and Community Engagement and the George Littlefield Professor of American History at The University of Texas at Austin. He is a native of Cleveland, Ohio, and earned his B.A. from Jackson State University in 1993 and his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in 1998. He was a history professor at Louisiana State University from 1998-2007, where he also directed the African and African American Studies Program and the Pre-Doctoral Scholars' Institute. He has been at The University of Texas at Austin since 2007 and was made permanent Vice President on June 13, 2018, after having served as interim for a year. At UT Austin he teaches a class on the black power movement and a signature course titled "Race in the Age of Trump." In the fall semester, he teaches more than 1,000 students across both courses. His innovative, unique, and engaging teaching style was featured as a cover story in the September/October 2015 edition of the Alcalde. Dr. Moore has received a number of teaching awards including the Jean Holloway Award for Excellence in Teaching and the John Warfield Teaching Award. Moore also directs study abroad programs in Beijing and Cape Town, which have become national models for diversifying global education. In 2004, he was awarded the National Urban League Whitney M. Young Award for Urban Leadership in Education.Professor Moore is the author of three books on black politics, The Defeat of Black Power: Civil Rights and the National Black Political Convention of 1972 (Louisiana State University Press, 2018), Black Rage in New Orleans: Police Brutality and African American Activism from World War II to Hurricane Katrina (Louisiana State University Press, 2010), and Carl B. Stokes and the Rise of Black Political Power in America (University of Illinois Press, 2002). Carl B. Stokes was nominated for the 2002 NAACP Image Award for best non-fiction book. He is currently working on a biography of Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., the controversial pastor, congressman, and civil rights leader. And to take it a step further, many blacks, as quiet as it is kept, are angry with former President Obama because he wasn't the black Messiah many hoped he would be.

However, these statements tended to be POLITICALLY CORRECT STATEMENTS which included all groups which have received discriminatory behavior and actions. From my perspective, we may have lost sight of the real issue ALREADY!!  From the folks who I have spoken with during the past couple of weeks, we are looking for CHANGE OF BEHAVIOR, BELIEFS, UNDERSTANDING AND "HEART" from Mainstream America!! This is Show #34 - Race and Ethnic Relations on Campus - BLACK RAGE - WAKE UP AMERICA! - in which I discuss the TRAGIC death of George Floyd who died while being arrested by police officers in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota just a few days ago. This event was also caught on video from several sources primarily through cell phones from passerby citizens and concerned citizens that witness this event. This is by far the MOST DISTURBING event that I witness on video in which this African American man was brutally treated and loss his life. The events after his death has UNFORTUNATELY enraged the African American community not only in Minneapolis but in major cities across the U.S.. My purpose of conducting this PODCAST SHOW is to LOOK FOR JUSTICE, SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM PEACEFUL SOLUTIONS and a BETTER UNDERSTANDING of the MULTITUDE of issues affecting the African American community and all other communities who are different than mainstream America! It's TIME FOR AMERICA TO WAKE UP!! Please send me your SUGGESTIONS for SOLUTIONS at ejb@678@gmail.com

BLACK RAGE! That is the best way to sum up this episode-a LOT of Black Rage.  The concept of The Doctor being the Gallifreyan version of Lucy was interesting, but this season was crammed together in a way that made us think that they did not believe they were going to get a subsequent season.  The idea of Cybermen Time Lords works-but not when it is shoved in last minute.  The Master was an excellent add, but they didn't utilize him fully.  The Doctor crosses her previous unknown self in the timeline in the Fugitive of the Judoon-and yet nothing is done with that until the last episode.  Finally, why now did the Judoon arrest our Doctor now and not when they encountered her searching for Ruth?  The episodes were lackluster and largely forgettable, the companions, whose stories they already fulfilled essentially (or dropped altogether in the case of Yaz) were after thoughts, and the season just lacked...the usual magic.  Be prepared for a 30 minute rant. He was barely out of high school when guitarist Reggie Lucas recommended him to Ornette Coleman, who hired him for what would become Prime Time. He stayed with Coleman for a dozen years, working with James "Blood" Ulmer and recording albums on his own at the same time. He's been part of some really amazing records that I love, including Derek Bailey's Mirakle, James Carter's Layin' in the Cut, James Brandon Lewis's Days of FreeMan, and the Young Philadelphians' Live in Tokyo. He also produced the new Last Poets album, Transcending Toxic Times. In this interview, we talk about a bunch of different aspects of his career, his sound, his style, his upbringing in Philadelphia, and his interest in fashion. In addition to being a musician, Tacuma runs a consignment boutique in Philadelphia called the Redd Carpet Room, where he sells designer clothes he picks up while traveling around the world. This guy is sharp in every possible way, so I really think you're going to enjoy this conversation a lot. I know I did. From “Dear White People”, “This is us” to “The Hate U Give”. Is Hollywood finally making a sincere concerted effort to humanize Black people? Or is it to sedate Black Rage and sooth White Guilt. While they inject themselves unnaturally into our narratives as objects of affection. To milk our last and most precious resource… our love (Empathy).  Ephesians 4:17-24: (the new life) "...you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. But that is not the way you learned Christ! - assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in him, to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness."

Sometimes you need a friend to make sense of things. Wanda shares how to advocate for yourself and create boundaries when recovering from racial trauma. Wanda Swan is one-part charm and two-parts Black Girl Magic. When not leaning on a nearby wall telling stories about her childhood in rural Mississippi, free-style rapping in traffic, or actively containing her Black Rage within the creative outlet of delivering atomic petty shade to all things related to and aligned with White Supremacy, she directs efforts to educate future change agents and support survivors of oppression and violence in a higher education setting. Wanda is a national NOVA award winner in Campus Victim Advocacy and has accepted that her God-given talent is to sit with the suffering and hold their truths. She has been embedded in the violence prevention and advocacy movement for nearly 10 years and also understands the importance of achieving a balance between "Activist-Academic-Social Justicey- You-gon-get-this-40-page-proposal-to-create-impactful-change-and-like-it" Wanda and "Ratchet-Aspiring-Twerk-Team-Captain-Eff-Yo-Respectability-Politics-Petty-Black-Fat-Nappy-Feminist" Wanda. Anthems are a means by which group identity is formed, and without group identity, argues to Professor Tracey Nicholls, the courage and imagination that justice work requires is in short supply. Today we discuss some of the anthems of the Black Lives Matter movement, such as Black Rage by Lauren Hill and Hell You Talmbout by Janelle Monáe. These anthems use improvisation and the ethics embedded in it to articulate shared values and create social memory. This passionate and jocular discussion weaves together peace studies, decolonization studies, and improvisation theory to offer a platform for reflection on the current social and political climate and how best to channel political emotions such as rage.
