How are we only on record five of this great seven record set? Because I continue to find gold in this box set filled with legendary songs about the old west. Each record, or in this case each side of this collection had its own theme. Even with those guides, I might take a little poetic license when I name episodes like this.  One side of this record is about things South Of The Border. The flip side mentions a thing or two about Legends And Sagas. Some you may know. Some have some pretty odd twists if you ask me. So, get ready to hear plenty of "ahh aaahs" and stories about heroes and villains in what is technically Tumbling Tumbleweeds Record 5, Volume 214: Badlands. More information about this album, see the Discogs webpage for it.  Credits and copyrights Various – Tumbling Tumbleweeds Label: Reader's Digest – RDA-229 / A Format: 7 x Vinyl, LP, Compilation Box Set Released: 1982 Genre: Folk, World, & Country Style: Country We will be listening to record 5, sides 1 and 2.  We will hear 7 of the 12 tunes from this disk. Kirk picks apart not one, not two, but twenty one micro-songs by the great They Might Be Giants. What's that blue thing doing here? Who's knocking on the wall? And for that matter, who's that standing out the window? It's time to answer those questions and many more, as Kirk delves into The Might Be Giants' singular collection of mini-songs, "Fingertips." It's a stylistic smorgasbord of sound, with everything from jazz to rock to lounge to... honestly, genre doesn't exist and "Fingertips" proves it. Each tiny song shines for its brief moment of life, and then lives on forever in your imagination. Written by: John Flansburgh and John LinnellAlbum: Apollo 18 (1992)Listen/Buy: Apple Music | Amazon | SpotifyALSO FEATURED/DISCUSSED:"Particle Man," "Birdhouse In Your Soul," and "Minimum Wage" by They Might Be Giants and "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" by Jimmy Kennedy and Nat Simon from Flood, 1990"Extra Savoir Faire" by TMBG from John Henry, 1994The 2002 documentary Gigantic (A Tale of Two Johns)“The Simpsons Main Title Theme” by Danny Elfman, 1989“Joy To The World” - lyrics by Isaac Watts as performed by Nat “King” ColeOUTRO SOLOIST: Kirk HamiltonKirk is the host of Strong Songs. Penn State wrestling is grinding through the second month of the collegiate offseason. Usually, this time of year would be slow with minimal news to discuss. However, this May, the headlines continue to come hot and heavy around Cael Sanderson's program. You're in luck, though: The Blue-White Illustrated wrestling show and podcast is back with a fresh episode to get you caught up on the latest information. Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel start the show with a recap of Zain Retherford's terrific triumph at the World Olympic Games qualifier last weekend. The Penn State product punched his ticket to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France by winning four matches in repechage, or the consolation bracket, at 65 kilograms, to finish third and qualify the U.S. and himself for the summer games in that weight class. He beat Sujeet Sujeet of India in the bronze medal match to do so. "Retherford was relentless with his forward pressure throughout the match," USA Wrestling wrote in a recap. "Midway through the first period, Retherford got in deep on a low single, was driving through Sujeet for the finish, but was countered for two. Heading into the second period trailing, 2-0, Retherford's pace paid off. He capitalized on an errant shot attempt by Sujeet for a go-behind takedown, taking the lead on criteria, 2-2. His defense held firm for the rest of the match, cementing the win and his place in the bronze medal Olympic playoff match. Retherford is one of four Nittany Lion Wrestling Club members and six U.S. Team members total going to the summer games. The full list includes: 57 kilograms: Spencer Lee 65 kilograms: Zain Retherford (NLWC) 74 kilograms: Kyle Dake (NLWC) 86 kilograms: Aaron Brooks (NLWC) 97 kilograms: Kyle Snyder (NLWC) 125 pounds: Mason Parris More: Penn State wrestling needs a new assistant coach; who might some candidates be?: Hot board From there, Carr and Pickel discuss Greg Kerkvliet's return to the Penn State program for the 2024-2025 season. What does it mean that he, Carter Starocci, and Beau Bartlett are all coming back? After that conversation, the pair dive into the reaction from David Taylor's introductory news conference at Oklahoma State. And, the two break down what the Nittany Lions might be looking for to replace assistant coach Jimmy Kennedy, who is going to Stillwater with Taylor. This week's episode wraps up with an early look at the 2024-2025 Penn State wrestling lineup at 125 pounds. Who could man the spot this year? The duo break it down. Learn more about your ad choices. Bearable Bible Passages (Learning about Bears in the Bible...?) - Grounded Ep. 23 Where did Steve come up with the idea for this episode? It probably won't make sense to you until part way, but give it a chance! We hope that today's episode will both be intriguing and also challenging to your understanding of the Bible, God, and yes, bears. Begin Show Notes: Bears in the Bible Why? B/c just read through 2 Kings, and in chapter 2 - story about Elisah, a roaming mob of insulting young men, and two mauling bears. And it's that biblical account that I really want to get to, but there are some other very interesting accounts in the Bible about bears, so we're going to start in some other places first. Actually, start - 2 Bear stories. One personal, and one in the news. *Personal… Kids, tent… *Another (many). Great smokies, female black bear (up to 300 lbs, 5'7” - the male 900) was grabbing food off picnic tables (Yogi and BooBoo), raiding trash cans, and even stealing backpacks. Relocate. Tranquilized, enclosed truck, relocated 1k miles, 4 states away. Georgia. Attached a geolocating device. What happened? That bear started walking. across Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina and then into Tennessee— returned to the campsite where it had been trapped. Never slowed down, just kept going (Forrest Gump bear; energizer bunny bear - keeps on walking). That female bear walked 1k miles, 4 states. How? Hidden GPS? Rand McNally atlas? (remember?). How? Had never been. Didn't see. Couldn't smell. Was drugged and inside an enclosed truck. How? And the ans is - we have no clue. Proposals - maybe able to follow Celestial or magnetic cues. (How?). Nobody knows! With all our science, physics - we just don't know. ***Bible - we are fearfully… and here we might note that even the the bears, animals of the world are fearfully and wonderfully made. (all kinds of animal migration that defies explanation). Glorifying the God who conceived and created it all. So two bear stories. Debbie's & mine, and the female energizer bear. But what about bears in the bible? Are there any? Yes indeed. *14X. However, most are not the animal, but the action. 1.Action? Yes, sometimes the word Bear - Bear one another Burdens. You will bear much fruit. That's the action. Not the animal. Bearing much fruit has nothing to do with bears. Job - (Job 9:9, 38:32) - not the animal. What? The constellation known in astronomy as (The Great Bear). The heavens declare. And God even put a great, big bear up there… But what about the animal in Bible? Are there any bears - the animal - in the bible? Yes. Bears in the life of David. (1 Samuel 17:34-35) David wants to fight goliath. You can't, you're a boy. But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father's sheep. When a lion or a bear (not boo-boo) came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. Whoah! Supernatural. Imagine grabbing a lion, a bear by the fur and killing? Bears fast. Powerful. A man can't. How? Supernatural. (God does things through me that are humanly impossible. I can kill the giant). (David at sight and sound - giant). More (1 Samuel 17:36) Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. Lions - reminded of “lions and tigers and bears, oh no.” - Dorothy. *Supernatural. David - “I am supernat empowered to kill unkillable things.” More - Ans how come can do that. (1 Samuel 17:37) The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.” Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you.” The Lord. David knew it wasn't him. God. David trusted God… Gave glory to God. Bears in the life of David. And there's still another use of the word Bear in the Life of David. But this one likens David to a bear. (2 Samuel 17:8) Absalom (3rd son of King David) “You know your father (David) and his men; they are fighters, and as fierce as a wild bear robbed of her cubs. Besides, your father is an experienced fighter; he will not spend the night with the troops. -So here David is likened to a bear. David is bear like. That is, David is a fierce fighter, a fierce warrior - like a wild bear.. -I just want to say - I'm really liking David. Interesting man. *Musician (temp - N). So david was.. *And yet fierce as bear. David is a manly man. David is not soft. David's not quintessential “nice guy. Just nice. Just affirm everybody. Musician/warrior. (And D, I will remind you, David prefigures, pre-pictures JC). So bears in the life of King David. But are there more bears in the Bible, Bears that are not connected with the life of Kind David? Yes. quite a few more. Wisdom lit. Exs: 3.(Proverbs 17:12) “Better to meet a bear robbed of her cubs than a fool bent on folly.” 4.(Proverbs 28:15) Like a roaring lion or a charging bear is a wicked ruler over a helpless people. Selah. So there's more… But that's enough. But now I want to come to that Bear - two bears - in the Bible that I mentioned earlier And that's going to bring us into the life and times of the OT prophet Elijah. Start w/ Elisha: Man of God. Prophet. Was supernaturally, mirac taken up - 2 Kings 2 - 1Now when the LORD was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind. So… Did he? Yes. 2 K 2 - 11And as they (e and e) still went on and talked, behold, chariots of fire (runner - Eric Liddell) and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. So pic that. This is what they saw, and this is what God did…. And Elijah Did not pass go. Did not collect $200. Went up. (Die first? Die later?). *OK, so Elijah went up. Where are the bears? 23He (Elisha) went up from there to Bethel, and while he was going up on the way, some youths came out of the city and jeered at him, saying, “Go up, you baldhead! Go up, you baldhead!” 24And he turned around, and when he saw them, he cursed them in the name of the LORD. And two she-bears came out of the woods and tore (Niv - Mauled, NKJV - Mauled, NASB - Tore up) forty-two of the boys. 25From there he went on to Mount Carmel, and from there he returned to Samaria. Two things problematic for some people. 1 - he cursed them in the name of God. Cursed them, for a little mocking, taunting? Over the top? 2 - she-bears - tore 42. Of course, we are to understand, didn't just happen. No co-incidence. Providentially sent by God. Over the top. God of the OT? Andy S right - unhitched from the OT? *Bethel - the center for Apostacy). Wicked and idolat in Israel. *Boys. 42 killed, but 42 of them. So more. How many? Don't know. 50? Boys out roaming in a pack. Not well governed at home. What kind of parents allow? Yeah, you're getting the picture. These guys are out roaming around in a mob, looking for something to do, looking for trouble. *Baldy. Was bald? Mocking God's prophet. Mocking the man of God. *Go up - Mocking Elijah. They had heard about… Equiv = Mocking Jesus' ascension. *Mocking Prophet = Mock God. *Just that the God of Isr sent… (if not get that - too tinged with modern sensibilities of “nice.” Modern notions of God - supremely Nice. And you are forgetting that it is a fearful thing to fall… *So two bears in life of Elisha. Any more bears? One final. (Isaiah 11:7 - new heaven and earth) The cow will feed with the bear, their young will lie down together (picture), and the lion will eat straw like the ox. (herbivorous) *Some - metaphor - reconciliation b/t enemies now, in this NC age. *Others - New heavens and new earth. Wherever you place it – it's to the Glory of God. So bears in the Bible. And before we go, one more reference to bears - modern culture, children's songs: If you go down to the woods today, You're sure of a big surprise If you go down to the woods today, You'd better go in disguise. For every bear that ever there was, Will gather there for certain, Because today's the day, The Teddy Bears have their picnic. "The Teddy Bears' Picnic" is a song consisting of a melody written in 1907 by American composer John Walter Bratton, and lyrics added in 1932 by Irish songwriter Jimmy Kennedy. Reflects our fascination with - Bears. B/c amazing creatures, created by a vastly more amazing creator God. End Show Notes: We hope that today's episode of Grounded has been encouraging and helpful with your Christian walk! What the Riff?!?

They Might Be Giants is an alternative rock band that formed in 1982 by John Flansburgh and John Linnell.  They are known as an absurdist, surreal alternative band popular on modern rock charts and college radio.  They are also known in the DIY music genre and in children's music.  Flood is their third studio album and has been certified platinum.  It is their best selling album, and considered their signature work. During the 80's Flansburgh and Linnell started recording their songs onto an answering machine and advertised the phone number in The Village Voice and other newspapers as “Dial-A-Song.”  The answering machine would play one track at a time, sometimes uncompleted work, sometimes mock advertisements.  It became quite popular, but it was an answering machine, so the quality wasn't great.  One of their slogans was “Always Busy, Often Broken.” It was a local Brooklyn number, so long distance fees applied.  The band advertised it with the line, “Free when you call from work.”TMBG have released 23 studio albums, 10 compilations, 10 live albums, 8 EP's 7 videos and 11 singles.  They have also released five children's albums – Tiny Toon Adventures exposed them to a younger audience, and they leveraged it to expand their career. They made heavy use of the internet since the early 90's, creating one of the first artist-owned music stores in 2004, and have made podcasts on a monthly basis from 2005 to 2014.Bruce brings us this unusual album. Istanbul (Not Constantinople) This is a cover originally written in 1953 on the 500th anniversary of the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans.  Lyrics are by Jimmy Kennedy, music by Nat Simon, and performed by the Four Lads.  The TMBG version was featured in the first season of MTV's Liquid Television and in an episode of "Tiny Toon Adventures."Your Racist FriendIn discussing this song, John Flansburgh told Songfacts, “You can't confront every person who's making an ass of themselves.  But there are times when you want to.  So it's really about a subtler idea than over-the-top expressions of race hate.  It's more just about the culture.”Somebody Keeps Moving My ChairI think we can all identify with the premise of this song, that there's a lot of unpleasantness that we have to deal with, and we can do that for the most part.  But when somebody keeps moving your chair that is beyond the pale. Theme from FloodThis brief piece starts off the album and leads into “Birdhouse In Your Soul.”  It seemed like a good addition to include, since most of the songs are short.Birdhouse In Your Soul This is the lead single from the album, and is their highest charting single in both the US and the UK, hitting number 3 on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart and number 6 on the UK singles chart.  The lyrics are narrated from the perspective of a blue nightlight shaped like a canary.  We found it fascinating that there are 18 key changes in this song! ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:"The Simpsons Theme" by Danny Elfman (from the television series "The Simpsons”)Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie made their TV series debut in this month in 1990, though they had shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show prior to that. STAFF PICKS:I Remember You by Skid RowBrian starts off this week's staff picks with an acoustic/power pop hair ballad from the band fronted by Sebastian Bach.  Bassist Rachel Boland and guitarist Dave “The Snake” Sabo penned this song which was their third single from their debut album.  It is about the girl from days gone by that you just can't forget. Fly High Michelle by Enuff Z'nuffRob's staff pick was inspired by a tragedy caused by a drug overdose.  Donnie Vie wrote this song in remembrance of a friend who had passed, and it was the biggest hit of the group's career.  The band takes their name from their bassist, Chip Z'nuff.Pure by The Lightning Seeds Wayne features this track from Liverpool's The Lightning Seeds.  The group is the product of producer Ian Broudie, and is really more of a solo project with musicians brought in to create a touring band.  The name comes from a misheard lyric from Prince's “Raspberry Beret.”Girl Like You by The SmithereensBruce's staff pick is the first single from the Smithereens third album,  appropriately (?) named 11.  Madonna was supposed to sing the harmony vocals but didn't show up for the recording session.  The band got Maria Vidal to do the vocals. It hit number 38 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 2 on the US Mainstream Rock charts. NOVELTY TRACK:Swing the Mood by Jive Bunny and the MastermixersThis mashup of swing and early rock songs was on the charts in January 1990.

It's a stylistic smorgasbord of sound, with everything from jazz to rock to lounge to... honestly, genre doesn't exist and "Fingertips" proves it. Now, usually there's one parent that's more invested in the feeding role than the other. However, there is no hard and fast rule around this. Often I see Moms are much more involved in feeding their kids, especially if they're the ones around them more. It all starts with the first year of life, where Mom may be breastfeeding, or they're on maternity leave with the baby. They're the first one starting solids with their baby, or they may be present for more of their meals. But there are more and more families who are making this a joint role, which is amazing to see!  Nowadays, there are many Dads joining the journey of feeding, in fact, we're seeing an increase in Dads sending us messages asking about our philosophies and teachings. They've done the research about feeding and are struggling because their wives want to take a different approach. It can be so challenging trying to find balance between two different approaches. My husband and I touched on this topic briefly today, but I'll dive in deeper in a podcast that's coming soon. So please stay tuned! For today though, we'll share our different approaches to feeding, some tips that helped our kids become independent, adventurous eaters, and some advice for all the new Dads out there.  If you get value from this episode, please leave a rating and a review on Apple Podcasts. Valentine's Day comes early as a city in California replaces its old sodium-vapor streetlights with LEDs, and Conway receives a sign from above.  "My Prayer" originally composed by Georges Boulanger, Carlos Gomez Barrera, and Jimmy Kennedy, covered by the Platters, covered by me. (CWs: some strong language, brief phallic language, food/brief crunching, death)   TRANSCRIPTS: CONWAY: This is Conway, receiving clerk for the Dead Letter Office of ***** Ohio, processing the national dead mail backlog. The following audio recording will serve as an internal memo strictly for archival purposes and should be considered confidential. Need I remind anyone: public release of this or any confidential material from the DLO is a felony. Some names and places have been censored for the protection of the public.  This case begins with a letter, Dead Letter 135707, and a recorded radio broadcast of unknown origin. Our research indicates that after a series of complaints regarding faulty streetlights in July 2016, a city in California formed a commission to replace their aging sodium-vapor lamps. City council partnered with a local tech company to quickly remove the old lights and install bright new LEDs. They sent out a notice of the planned change to all residents within city limits. This prompted the aforementioned letter in response. The letter and the radio broadcast were sent on different days, the broadcast recorded before the plan was even public, but arrived at the commission at exactly the same time. It...spiraled out from there.  A carrier noticed the mail buildup at the listed address of this supposed commission--a burned out church--and sent it our way to sort through. These are the collected letters, voicemails, emails, and other communications surrounding the days following in summer 2016.  MARY: Dear City Council, I'm a zoologist with the University of ******. I just heard about your proposal for our streetlight issue, and I have a few concerns. First, it should be noted that the views presented here are strictly my own, and do not reflect the opinions of the university or its administration. From what I've read about the commission's plans, it seems that the city will be removing the low-pressure sodium bulbs we use now and replacing them with high-efficiency LED lights, funded partially by Thanatech. While I do think it's a good use of taxpayer dollars to upgrade our city's infrastructure, and efficiency is definitely desirable, my concern lies in the LEDs themselves. Our old sodium-vapor lamps may not be the brightest or most aesthetically pleasing, but these supposed deficiencies may be important. Inside low-pressure sodium bulbs, metal is heated, causing it to emit a yellowish light. This warm, relatively dim light sits around or below about 2200 kelvin, significantly warmer than natural sunlight. The LEDs you're planning to use sit somewhere between 4000 and 6000k, the approximate color temperature of actual daylight.  So why does any of this matter, you may be thinking? Well, although these lamps aren't great for helping us see at night, they may be better for our furry friends. It's theorized that brighter, bluer light, like that provided by LEDs, can trick segments of the brain into thinking that it's actually daytime. I worry that replacing our whole grid with these bulbs could have a negative effect on our local wildlife. If a bunch of birds, bats, raccoons, and skunks think it's daytime when it's really midnight, we could have more problems on our hands than flickering street lights. The wavelengths of light emitted by these LEDs could disrupt their behavior, and may throw off their circadian rhythms. Disrupted sleep can cause serious problems, from common irritability and sluggishness, which we often see in ourselves, to memory issues, paranoia, aggressive or impulsive behavior, lack of appetite, even hallucinations, and so on. While I think fixing our streets is a good idea, I don't think it's worth potentially upending our entire local ecosystems in the process. Surely we can come to some kind of middle-ground and just get new sodium lamps, right? That is, unless you've already paid for Thanatech's LEDs with our tax dollars.  Either way, thank you for taking the time to consider my concerns. Best wishes, Dr. Mary ****, class of 2005 CONWAY: Postmarked July 11th, 2016, arrived July 12th 2016. The following radio broadcast was sent July 5th, 2016 and arrived July 12th, 2016. CRACKLING VOICE ON THE RADIO: Good evening, ladies and gentleman. I'm here to tell you there's electricity in the margins on the page, an atom bomb's worth. In the space between the words, there's energy. The things we can't see are made of that energy. They travel through the wires and hide in stoplights. We can't see them because we are not meant to see them. They come out at night and ride on the electrons in the air. Ladies and gentleman, we are made of electrons. When that twilight is gone, and no songbirds sing, God comes through the lines and sits in the streetlights. He waves, but you can't see it. Should we all be so lucky as to be touched by the waving man in the light. CONWAY: The following voicemail was sent to the commission on July 17th, 2016. MITCH ON THE PHONE: Hey mayor dipshit, these new lights are so bright they're going straight through my curtains. How the hell is any of this even allowed? Who's paying for this? I didn't elect some CEO dillweed to be in charge of our city, I elected you. And let me guess, they were paid for by our tax dollars? If I wanted this kinda open corruption with big business, I woulda stayed there in West by god Virginia. I haven't slept in two days, and since the new lights went up in this neighborhood, they're driving me up a wall. And since when did this renovation deal mean more plainclothes cops? Were those paid for by us too? I've seen the same jerk hanging out around my street every night, but no cop car. I can't get a good look at him, but he's dressed dark and keeps moving around between lampposts. Seems like he's patrolling. Maybe like law enforcement, or even a g-man. Can you PLEASE have a meeting with the commission to see if you can do anything about this decision? Name's Mitch by the way, disgruntled taxpayer number who the hell even knows now. CONWAY: Email sent to To ******* on July 18th, 2016 at 9:15PM Pacific Standard. LIZ: God, I miss you, Priya. I haven't been sleeping well, or I mean I guess worse than usual. I haven't been this exhausted since high school track. I hear people moving around at ungodly hours every night. Though, to be fair, I'm sure they hear me up too. The city put in these super bright new street lights everyone hates them. People have been talking about like going to city hall to protest they're that bad. Everyone's on edge. I came really close to losing it at this girl who cut in front of me at the self-checkout. She didn't even see that I was there. I don't know what came over me. While I was there, I heard someone tell the cashier a weird story about people loitering outside apartment buildings. I thought I saw something like that today, actually. Looked like a tall guy, but I mean I couldn't make out any features or even like his clothes. He kinda shifted around and then went away. Just disappeared. I'm pretty sure it was just somebody's shadow from the balcony, though. Like with the lights these bright, you can make some pretty sick shadows. You'd have freaked out. Hope Munich is treating you well now that you're settled in. Call me in the morning. Morning my time or yours I guess, it's not like I'll be asleep anyway.

That's why when I came across the third section of the late Chris Anderson's quotation celebration book, it immediately brought a smile to my face... The section: “Just Plain Silly.”  There were so many good ones in here that it was tough to decide which one to dissect. I was leaning toward these two gems from Chris's favorite teacher, Mr. Stick...  “Life is like a jar of jalapeños, you never know which one is going to burn your ass.”  “Some people think the glass is half empty and others think the glass is half full... All I want to know is where my cheeseburger is.”  Ultimately, I decided to go with Mr. Anonymous once again: “What if the Hokey Pokey really is what it's all about.”

S1EP7 Lauren Turk: Discusses her life and EP "Bloom"  We play Lauren’s new song “See You Again” at end of episode! Lauren Turk: Lauren Turk's debut song and music video "Love Left Over" premiered on The FADER with an appearance from Amandla Stenberg. Lauren is known for her one-woman shows, singing in French, English and Spanish, live looping beats, piano, violin and her voice to soundscape from scratch, as well as her "Stories to Songs" concerts, where she transforms audience stories into songs live. She performs around the world for conferences, festivals and brands such as TEDx, Airbnb, OZY, Sandbox, Hatch, C2, VidCon, La Calaca, Kiss the Ground, USC, Amnesty International, and more. Lauren also composes for film (Bright; Netflix / Will Smith, Mexico Pelagico; Netflix). Calabria, Italy: Calabria, in southwest Italy, occupies the "toe" of the country’s boot-shaped peninsula. It's a sun-baked region of rugged mountains, old-fashioned villages and dramatic coastline, with many popular beaches. Coastal Reggio Calabria, its largest city, is home to the Museo Archeologico Nazionale and its Riace Bronzes, a famous pair of Greek warriors dating back to the 5th century B.C.E. Calabria Song: "Calabria" is a song by Danish DJ/producer Rune Reilly Kölsch. It was originally released in 2003 by Credence, a sub label of Parlophone Records. Istanbul, Turkey:Istanbul (UK: /ˌɪstænˈbʊl/, /-ˈbuːl/ or US: /-stɑːn-/ or /ˈɪstənbʊl/;Turkish: İstanbul [isˈtanbuɫ], historically known as Byzantium and before 1924 as Constantinople, is the most populous city in Turkey and the country's economic, cultural, and historic center. Istanbul is a transcontinental city in Eurasia, straddling the Bosporus strait (which separates Europe and Asia) between the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea. Its commercial and historical center lies on the European side and about a third of its population lives on the Asian side. The city is the administrative center of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (coterminous with Istanbul Province), both hosting a population of around 15 million residents. Istanbul is one of the world's most populous cities and ranks as the world's fourth-largest city proper and the largest European city. Istanbul is viewed as a bridge between the East and West. Istanbul not Constantinople: "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" is a 1953 novelty song, with lyrics by Jimmy Kennedy and music by Nat Simon. Written on the 500th anniversary of the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans, the lyrics humorously refer to the official 1930 renaming of the city of Constantinople to Istanbul. The song's original release, performed by The Four Lads, was certified as a gold record. Pink’s NY: Hip hotspot for craft cocktails, upscale pub food & live music in an industrial-chic setting. Paris, France: Paris (French pronunciation: [paʁi] is the capital and most populous city of France, with an area of 105 square kilometres (41 square miles) and a population of 2,206,488. Since the 17th century, Paris has been one of Europe's major centres of finance, commerce, fashion, science, and the arts. Sciences Po: The Paris Institute of Political Studies, commonly referred to as Sciences Po, is a prestigious and influential academic institution in the social sciences in France. Buckminster Fuller: Richard Buckminster "Bucky" Fuller (/ˈfʊlər/; July 12, 1895 – July 1, 1983) was an American architect, systems theorist, author, designer, inventor and futurist. Fuller published more than 30 books, coining or popularizing terms such as "Spaceship Earth", "Dymaxion" house/car, ephemeralization, synergetic, and "tensegrity". He also developed numerous inventions, mainly architectural designs, and popularized the widely known geodesic dome. Carbon molecules known as fullerenes were later named by scientists for their structural and mathematical resemblance to geodesic spheres. Fuller was the second World President of Mensa from 1974 to 1983. Natural hair movement: The natural hair movement is a movement which encourages women of African descent to keep their natural afro-textured hair. Originating in the United States during the 2000s, this movement is called mouvement nappy in French-speaking countries. The Way of the Superior Man-David Deida:Though much has changed in society since the first publication of The Way of the Superior Man, men of all ages still “tussle with the challenges of women, work, and sexual desire.” Including an all-new preface by author David Deida, this 20th-anniversary edition of the classic guide to male spirituality offers the next generation the opportunity to cultivate trust in the moment and put forth the best versions of themselves in an ever-changing world. Women's studies:Women's studies is an academic field that draws on feminist and interdisciplinary methods in order to place women’s lives and experiences at the center of study, while examining social and cultural constructs of gender; systems of privilege and oppression; and the relationships between power and gender as they intersect with other identities and social locations such as race, sexual orientation, socio-economic class, and disability. Identity Politics:political positions based on the interests and perspectives of social groups with which people identify. Identity politics includes the ways in which people's politics are shaped by aspects of their identity through loosely[clarification needed] correlated social organizations. Examples include social organizations based on age, religion, social class or caste, culture, dialect, disability, education, ethnicity, language, nationality, sex, gender identity, generation, occupation, profession, race, political party affiliation, sexual orientation, settlement, urban and rural habitation, and veteran status. The term "identity politics" has been in use in various forms since the 1960s or 1970s, but has been applied with, at times, radically different meanings by different populations. Gender Norms:What are gender roles?Gender roles in society means how we’re expected to act, speak, dress, groom, and conduct ourselves based upon our assigned sex. For example, girls and women are generally expected to dress in typically feminine ways and be polite, accommodating, and nurturing. Men are generally expected to be strong, aggressive, and bold. Every society, ethnic group, and culture has gender role expectations, but they can be very different from group to group. They can also change in the same society over time. For example, pink used to be considered a masculine color in the U.S. while blue was considered feminine. Ethnography:(from Greek ἔθνος ethnos "folk, people, nation" and γράφω grapho "I write") is the systematic study of people and cultures. It is designed to explore cultural phenomena where the researcher observes society from the point of view of the subject of the study. An ethnography is a means to represent graphically and in writing the culture of a group. The word can thus be said to have a double meaning, which partly depends on whether it is used as a count noun or uncountable. The resulting field study or a case report reflects the knowledge and the system of meanings in the lives of a cultural group. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho: Paulo Coelho's masterpiece tells the magical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found. Destructive Emotions: A Scientific Dialogue with the Dalai Lama: Imagine sitting with the Dalai Lama in his private meeting room with a small group of world-class scientists and philosophers. The talk is lively and fascinating as these leading minds grapple with age-old questions of compelling contemporary urgency. Daniel Goleman, the internationally bestselling author of Emotional Intelligence, provides the illuminating commentary—and reports on the breakthrough research this historic gathering inspired. The Californians:A soap opera parody featuring Fred Armisen, Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, and others as wealthy blondes with Valley Girl accents (Valleyspeak) exaggerated almost to the point of incoherence. Each "episode" opens with the Soapnet logo with Bill Hader's voice-over announcement: "The Californians". The title sequence shows the pouring of a glass of white wine and some beach front property, with an acoustic guitar lick and chords that imitate America's "Ventura Highway" on the soundtrack. NYC vs. LA:A few years ago, I received a frantic call from a friend. For months he’d been mulling over whether to stay in New York or give acting a go in Los Angeles. “I love New York,” he said. “But I want to do more TV and film.” Smartphone zombie: A smartphone zombie is a pedestrian who walks slowly and without attention to their surroundings because they are focused upon their smartphone. This is now a significant safety hazard as distracted pedestrians cause accidents. Cities such as Chongqing and Antwerp have introduced special lanes for smartphone users to help direct and manage them. Limbic System: The limbic system is a set of brain structures located on both sides of the thalamus, immediately beneath the cerebrum. It has also been referred to as the paleomammalian cortex. It is not a separate system but a collection of structures from the telencephalon, diencephalon, and mesencephalon. It includes the olfactory bulbs, hippocampus, hypothalamus, amygdala, anterior thalamic nuclei, fornix, columns of fornix, mammillary body, septum pellucidum, habenular commissure, cingulate gyrus, parahippocampal gyrus, entorhinal cortex, and limbic midbrain areas. Sound In Space:You’ve heard it before: In space, no one can hear you scream. That’s because sound doesn’t move through a vacuum, and everyone knows that space is a vacuum. The thing is, that’s not completely true. The Orchard: As a pioneering music, film and TV distribution company and top-ranked video network, The Orchard has local reps in more than 30 global markets. From digital retailers and physical stores to performance rights societies and mobile outlets, our partnerships help amplify your reach and revenue across multiple business verticals. Tardigrade:Tardigrades (/ˈtɑːrdɪˌɡreɪd/; also known colloquially as water bears, or moss piglets) are a phylum of water-dwelling, eight-legged, segmented micro-animals. Cosmo Sheldrake - Tardigrade Song:Cosmo Sheldrake is a 28 year old multi-instrumentalist musician, composer and producer. He released his first single ‘The Moss’ in 2014, which was followed by the ‘Pelicans We’ EP in 2015. This April he will release his debut album ‘The Much Much How How and I’ on Transgressive Records. Much of his work is to do with play, nonsense and the sonorous environment. Sound and Light Differences:Sound you hear, light you see. Sound is a mechanical wave whereas light is an electromagnetic one. Light travels at 300.000.000 m/s meanwhile sound travels at 353 m/s. Light does not need a medium to travel to, sound does. They are both waves but only light is also a particle. Wave Particle Duality of Light:Wave–particle duality is the concept in quantum mechanics that every particle or quantic entity may be partly described in terms not only of particles, but also of waves. It expresses the inability of the classical concepts "particle" or "wave" to fully describe the behavior of quantum-scale objects. As Albert Einstein wrote: “It seems as though we must use sometimes the one theory and sometimes the other, while at times we may use either. We are faced with a new kind of difficulty. We have two contradictory pictures of reality; separately neither of them fully explains the phenomena of light, but together they do.” Using infrared light to help deaf people hear and blind people see:Normally, implants use electrical signals to help people hear and see. However, University of Utah bioengineer Richard Rabbitt has discovered a different way to activate cells. Rabbitt figured out how to use infrared light to send signals to the brain. Instead of using electrical signals, pulses of invisible wavelengths activate nearby nerve cells and communicate with the brain. What the Bleep do We know?: takes viewers on a journey to unlock the secrets of life. Follow Amanda (Academy Award-winner Marlee Matlin), a divorced, middle-aged woman who is thrust into a world where science and spirituality converge. As her entire concept of reality is challenged, yours will be too. See for yourself why this groundbreaking movie became one of the most compelling and talked about films of the last decade. Schrodinger's Cat:is a thought experiment, sometimes described as a paradox, devised by Austrian physicist Erwin Schrödinger in 1935. It illustrates what he saw as the problem of the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics applied to everyday objects. The scenario presents a cat that may be simultaneously both alive and dead, a state known as a quantum superposition, as a result of being linked to a random subatomic event that may or may not occur. The thought experiment is also often featured in theoretical discussions of the interpretations of quantum mechanics. Schrödinger coined the term Verschränkung (entanglement) in the course of developing the thought experiment. Free will:Free will is the ability to choose between different possible courses of action unimpeded. THE PHYSICS OF FREE WILL: “You’re playing a game of pool. You line up your cue stick behind the cue ball. You practice your stroke…one…two…three… On the fourth stroke, you follow through and the cue stick makes contact. If we could stop time in this moment, we could predict with reasonable certainty the outcome of your shot. The cue stick determines the path of the cue ball. The path of the cue ball determines if and how it will hit the target ball. How it hits the target ball determines the path of both, and whether either will reach a pocket.” Viking Funeral:  Norse funerals, or the burial customs of Viking Age North Germanic Norsemen (early medieval Scandinavians), are known both from archaeology and from historical accounts such as the Icelandic sagas, Old Norse poetry, and probably from the account of Ahmad ibn Fadlan. The Book of Secrets: Unlocking the Hidden Dimensions of Your Life:  Every life is a book of secrets, ready to be opened. The secret of perfect love is found there, along with the secrets of healing, compassion, faith, and the most elusive one of all: who we really are. We are still mysteries to ourselves, despite the proximity of these answers, and what we most long to know remains lodged deep inside. Gene p53: p53, also known as TP53 or tumor protein (EC :2.7.1.37) is a gene that codes for a protein that regulates the cell cycle and hence functions as a tumor suppression. It is very important for cells in multicellular organisms to suppress cancer. P53 has been described as "the guardian of the genome", referring to its role in conserving stability by preventing genome mutation (Strachan and Read, 1999). The name is due to its molecular mass: it is in the 53 kilodalton fraction of cell proteins. Lauren Turk See you Again Video:Concept by Lauren TurkDirected by James Bloniarz & Billy Ferguson / Lake Effect Films Generation Wealth: “Generation Wealth” is a multi-platform project that Lauren Greenfield has been working on since 2008, and is being released in 2017 as a museum exhibition, a photographic monograph, and a documentary film. Ascribe vs subscribe:Ascribe and subscribe are two words that are very similar in pronunciation and spelling, but have two different meanings. We’ll examine the difference between ascribe and subscribe, their meanings and origin. We’ll also look at a few examples of their use in sentences. Edward Bernais: Edward Louis Bernays (/bərˈneɪz/; German: [bɛɐ̯ˈnaɪs]; November 22, 1891 − March 9, 1995) was an Austrian-American pioneer in the field of public relations and propaganda, referred to in his obituary as "the father of public relations".[2] Bernays was named one of the 100 most influential Americans of the 20th century by Life. He was the subject of a full length biography by Larry Tye called The Father of Spin (1999) and later an award-winning 2002 documentary for the BBC by Adam Curtis called The Century of the Self. More recently, Bernays is noted as the great-uncle of Netflix co-founder, Marc Randolph. Whitney Houston Documentary: An in-depth look at the life and music of Whitney Houston. Short Time from Fargo rolls on as Jimmy Kennedy and Nick Marable earned berths on the U.S. Freestyle World Team and we talk with announcer Sandy Stevens, who has announced 43 of the 44 Junior National freestyle championships. Men's Freestyle - July 24Best of Three Match 2Two big four-point moves and one takedown was all that Jimmy Kennedy needed to beat 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Coleman Scott 10-0 in the second match at 61kg to claim a spot on the U.S. World Team for the first time. The match was slowed due to the cut above Scott's left eye. Kennedy won the Yasar Dogu back in February in Turkey. When Nick Marable last stepped on the raised platform in Fargo with a big match, he came away as Tennessee's first Cadet freestyle champion back in 2003. On Thursday, Marable stepped off the mat after his 8-2 victory over James Green as a member of the U.S. World Team. Marable's victory in the second match in the best-of-three series saw a lot of the trademark counter offense he's known for. He also showed proficiency in par terre, turning Green twice. Best of Three Match 1Jimmy Kennedy converted a double leg takedown with 41 seconds remaining to break a 2-2 tie and top Coleman Scott 5-2 in the first match of a best-of-three series at 61kg. Scott jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a pair of pushouts before Kennedy got on the board with a pushout of his own on a double leg attack with 14 seconds remaining in the first. Kennedy tied the score at 2-2 with a second pushout from a double leg attempt and went ahead with 41 to go with another double attempt. A late attack by Scott drew ooohs from the crowd, but Scott couldn't get a third supporting point down to gain control. He challenged and lost, giving Kennedy the fifth point. Action as a little slower at 70kg as Nick Marable topped James Green 2-1 in the first match of the best-of-three series. Green took the lead 1-0 with a minute to go in the first after scoring a caution point after Marable was unable to score after being put on the shot clock. In the second, Marable initiated a halfshot, getting Green to bite and counter with a shot of his own. Marable battled the position and got the go-behind for the takedown and the 2-1 lead, which held for the victory.
