Extinction Rebellion's co-founder Clare Farrell and conservation scientist Dr Charlie Gardner team up once more to discuss issues and stories they feel are not getting enough airtime. They want to make sure that the latest news in science and important reports that are relevant to the climate and ecological crisis are flagged and explained in ways that are easy to understand.EPISODE 2: Aerosol masking, geoengineering, and the pension problemIn this episode they discuss the evolving discourse on aerosol masking, particulates and solar radiation management approaches, plus the pensions report from carbon tracker that shows the flawed economics of climate overlooks science and leaves the pension sector in grave risk. In fact the assumptions used to make decisions in finance cite risks that the scientific community describe as incompatible with organised human life as ‘acceptable'.https://carbontracker.org/millions-of-pensions-at-risk-because-investment-consultants-overlook-threat-of-climate-tipping-points/--------------------- If you found this useful please, share, comment, subscribe, like, mobilise, and donate! https://chuffed.org/xr/uk

Clare Farrell is a founding member of Extinction Rebellion. She's an activist, artist, designer, communicator and organiser. If you've ever seen the Adam McKay movie ~ Don't Look Up ~ with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, in which an asteroid is found to be on a collision course with Earth, and the protagonists go on national tv news in America to try and raise the alarm, only to be met by the banal absurdity of how mainstream news works.Well, Clare Farrell has that role in real life as part of XR. She appears on TV to speak on behalf of this decentralised movement, especially when the show has potential to be a bit antagonistic. A surreal experience to find yourself in. It's not the every day.In this episode we talk about Clare's origins in fashion and design and creative activism, up to being part of the originating group of Extinction Rebellion in 2018. We discuss their demands for net zero carbon emissions by 2025, citizens assemblies and direct democracy, and reparatory justice for nations and people around the world most impacted by the climate crisis. We also talk about the non-functional political process, expanding police powers in the UK and Australia, and punitive jail sentences and fines being introduced to discourage peaceful protest. About the failings of mainstream media to even pretend they're here to faithfully report the news and context of the world we're living in, not just for the climate issue, and what this all means for us and the planet.SPONSORSZerion combines every corner of web3 in a simple and intuitive app for self-custodial humans. ‘Extinction' – probably a word you associate with long-gone dinosaurs. How about ‘rebellion'? Thousands giving all for the cause on historical battlefields? Well, on this week's Tea with the Changemakers, we welcome you to the rebellion, as we speak with Clare Farrell, who proudly co-founded the movement, Extinction Rebellion (XR). (You can choose not to join the rebellion, of course... that just means there's more chance of us all ending up in the same state as stegosaurus and company – your call!)Now, you may know something of Extinction Rebellion already, having garnered a reputation for blocking roads and holding up ambulances; however, in this episode, we dispel a few myths (especially the ambulance one) that have often been fuelled by tabloid tattle and then parroted by more mainstream media outlets.Extinction Rebellion describes itself as an international movement that uses non-violent civil disobedience in an attempt to halt mass extinction and minimise the risk of social collapse. On the surface, claims of societal chaos and ecological devastation may sound a little drastic and dramatic; however, with the tipping point of global warming approaching in 2030, the cost of living crisis, and the richest 1% of society getting ever richer while the vast majority are getting ever poorer, it could well be argued that society is already collapsing… This week, we hope that you'll put any pre/mis-conceptions you may have about Extinction Rebellion aside, and appreciate them as a genuine catalyst for change. Cup only half full? What Can We Do In These Powerful Times?

Clare Farrell is a co-founder of Extinction Rebellion, as well as fashion designer and lecturer (Twitter, website).Clare had a lot of deeply interesting things to say across a broad range of topics. So, this episode is the longest yet at 57 mins. I make no apology, as every minute is worth listening to. Just want to give you a heads up.She speaks about the coming together of Extinction Rebellion as a magical time: "It's a huge honour really. So too, in like, basically, I feel the universe sort of collided the right people at the right time. And enough of us were like crazy enough to go: oh, yeah, like, whatever. Let's try and do that."Clare is trying to create a different approach to politics, here "ordinary people have agency, and the ability to take part in the way decisions are made". On the need for deep change to address the climate emergency, Clare believes that "ordinary people are way ahead of the people in power".As you will pick up, I hugely admire Extinction Rebellion for many things, including the core message: a positive future possible if only we were willing to tell the truth on the challenges we face and act for it. For the most part, the first wave of XR was successful in creating a sense of a festival, which modelled a more vibrant, more inclusive, positive future, where we will still have to deal with the consequences of our actions up to this point.Clare ends with this:"This work that we do is absolutely made of love....Whatever your opinion about me...[It] absolutely comes from ..the best possible intention to try and make something better out of a wholly depressing and heartbreaking, tragic situation."Clare occasionally swears (a*-holes, sh*t, f*cked that kind of thing).LinksPenguin publishers book with Extinction Rebellion: 'This is Not A Drill'.More on the Extinction Rebellion symbol and how since inception it has always been a strictly anti-consumerist project. For criticism of David Attenborough, see George Monbiot's piece.More on situationism on wikipedia.Nafeez Ahmed on the flawed social science behind XR's change strategy.Merchants of Doubt on wikipedia. One way into the material found by the US Congress on the Oil and Gas companies' lipservice to Net Zero.Just Stop OilAn exploration of the evidence base behind radical tactics by James Ozden. You've probably heard about degrowth, which is: "a planned reduction of energy and resource use designed to bring the economy back into balance with the living world in a way that reduces inequality and improves human well-being." (If this idea is new to you, have a listen to Episode 135 with economist Jason Hickel).Question: is it time to apply such thinking more specifically to the fashion industry? What would that look like? This week's podcast presents the ideas of a new fashion activist organisation called Fashion Act Now (FAN), born out of Extinction Rebellion. They are calling for "a radical defashion future" - their interpretation of: "the role fashion must play in degrowth. It is a transition to post-fashion clothing systems that are regenerative, local, fair, nurturing and sufficient for the needs of communities."They argue that the current system - which they call Fashion with a capital 'F' - is not only environmentally unsustainable because it's addicted to overproduction, but, in its current form, morally bankrupt being built on oppression."Defashion may sound negative," says FAN co-founder and former fashion journalist Bel Jacobs, "but we think of it as a movement of joy, possibility, liberation. It does not mean the end of beautiful clothing."On this podcast, you will hear from Jacobs, along with her fellow FAN co-founder, the activist Sara Arnold; Extinction Rebellion co-founder (a former fashion designer herself) Clare Farrell; anthropologist Sandra Niessen (who has researched the clothing and textile tradition of the Batak people of Sumatra, Indonesia, for almost 40 years); fashion museum curator and founder of Denier Shonagh Marshall; and New York-based stylist Samantha Weir.To take the Fashion Act Now pledge, see here.Follow them on Instagram here.Thank you for listening to Wardrobe Crisis. The episode begins with the stirring words of XR’s Clare Farrell and Marvina Newton from ‘United for black Lives’ speaking against the Police Crime Sentencing and Courts bill in parliament Square on April 3rd at a Kill the Bill coalition event. This podcast looks at the oppressive new legislation that Priti Patel is trying to foist upon us, and at what it means in both practical terms for those organising protests but also in the wider sense of democracy. We explore this with the Lib Dem peer and environmental spokesperson Lord Jonny Oates. Of course, XR is fervently non political in a party sense but Lord Oates has also signed up to the CEE bill which aims to make XR’s three demands into British law so he is an ally. The bill does many things besides attack our right to protest – it also takes away the rights of traveller communities and includes provisions on trespass, and extends the penalties for many offences but since the government admits that the protest legislation has been geared to limiting the powers of both Black Lives Matter movement and Extinction Rebellion, the podcast focusses on that issue. Finally we widen the frame with an interview with a tremendous writer and XR activist Jay Giffiths author of Wild and Why Rebel? and ask about whether these political moves can be associated with fascism. How are they related to the Libertarianism incubated in Trump’s America and what parallels can we find from earlier times in history? Please share and subscribe to the podcast. Why not share with your XR curious friends? We urgently need to grow the movement and exert pressure to make this year an historic one for climate. PS: a group of podcasters are campaigning for a climate category so that people could find green podcasts and would mean we’d get listeners but you could also find other material worth listing to. This Episode was recorded during London fashion week. Extinction Rebellion is a grass roots activism movement demanding radical action on the global climate crisis. The group formed in the UK in October 2018 on the premise that trying to be a bit more sustainable, tinkering around the edges of the system but essentially carrying on with business as usual, will not save us from climate breakdown. They are calling on governments to declare a climate and ecological emergency, and to act immediately to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2025. You will hear from some of the Extinction Rebellion protestors who staged a 'funeral' for London Fashion Week in September, then sit down with activists: Clare Farrell, Sara Arnold and Will Skeaping to find out why they think civil disobedience is the way to go, what to do about the scary science, and where fashion fits in with all of this. This is a segment of episode #176 of Last Born In The Wilderness “Rebel For Life: Rebellion In The Age Of Extinction & Climate Breakdown w/ Clare Farrell.” Listen to the full episode: http://bit.ly/LBWfarrell

In this segment of my discussion with Clare Farrell, spokesperson and founding member of Extinction Rebellion (XR), we how the recent high-profile acts of direct action and civil disobedience organized by XR in the United Kingdom this last year highlight the broadening awareness more and more people now have of the implications of global climate change and environmental disintegration into the near and distant future. This rebellion against extinction (of both human and non-human life) is a step toward publicly and politically addressing the likely near-term extinction of human life due to anthropogenic climate change and ecological collapse. In spite of this reality, XR means to generate action against, as well as directly confront, the political and economic forces of our global society head on, in spite of our dire prospects. Extinction Rebellion has hit a nerve in the UK and abroad, as can be seen in much of the media coverage XR has been getting, and the awareness and action XR has generated has created a means (one of many) for people to grieve and act meaningfully in light of the reality we are implicitly a part of — a reality that deeply informs the nature of XR’s origin, activism, principles, and demands. Clare Farrell is a fashion designer and a founding member and spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion, a grassroots movement founded in the UK in 2018. The main mission of XR is to address the global ecological and climate crisis through nonviolent direct action and protest. While XR was founded in the UK, its impact and reach is global. In this episode, I speak with Clare Farrell, co-founder and spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion (XR) — "an international social movement that aims to drive radical change, through nonviolent resistance in order to minimise species extinction and avert climate breakdown.”* This discussion includes an overview of the principles and the proposed demands of this movement, the realities of the global implications of climate change and environmental disintegration and how it informs the activism of those involved in the movement, and the ground-level organizing Extinction Rebellion is engaged with in communities across the United Kingdom, and internationally as well. In this discussion with Clare, we examine her role within this movement, as well as look at some of the recent high-profile acts of direct action and civil disobedience organized by XR in the United Kingdom this last year, and how these actions highlight the broadening awareness more and more people now have of the implications of global climate change and environmental disintegration into the near and distant future. I ask Clare to elaborate on the principles and proposed demands of this movement, and how this rebellion against extinction (of both human and non-human life) is a step toward publicly and politically addressing the likely near-term extinction of human life due to anthropogenic climate change and ecological collapse. We discuss this and more in this episode. Clare Farrell is a fashion designer and founding member and spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion, a grassroots movement founded in the UK in 2018.
