Michael Kao: What Peace Black Swans and Fiscal Red Bull Mean for America’s Future

Tom Bodrovics welcomes Michael Kao to the show. Michael Kao is Private Family Office Investor & Author - Former Hedge Fund Manager & Commodities Trader. In this comprehensive discussion, Kao provides an in-depth analysis of the Trump 2.0 economic strategy, focusing on several key policy initiatives designed to reshape the United States' economic trajectory. He describes the current approach as navigating an "asteroid field" with strategic policy levers aimed at addressing significant economic challenges, including massive deficits, global conflicts, and critical dependencies on adversarial nations. Kao highlights four primary policy initiatives: tariffs and economic statecraft, redirecting fiscal spending, managing inflation, and containing internal and external threats. A critical component of this strategy involves what he calls a "reverse Marshall Plan," where other countries and private industries shoulder fiscal responsibilities traditionally borne by the US government. This approach could potentially redirect billions of dollars in spending through trade deals, NATO commitments, and corporate reshoring initiatives. The discussion extensively explores potential deflationary mechanisms within the policy framework, including strategic tariffs, oil price management, and potential productivity gains from AI and deregulation. Kao suggests that these policies could create a "disinflationary growth" scenario, potentially allowing the US to grow its way out of its current debt challenges. Kao remains cautiously optimistic about the United States' economic future, emphasizing the importance of maintaining these strategic initiatives beyond the current presidential cycle. He believes the US has significant untapped potential on its balance sheet and that the current approach could create more favorable long-term economic conditions. The conversation also touches on geopolitical dynamics, including potential shifts in Middle Eastern relationships, China's economic challenges, and the importance of creating sustainable economic conditions that don't rely on short-term monetary manipulations. Ultimately, Kao presents a nuanced view of the current economic strategy, arguing that bold, potentially controversial initiatives might be necessary to break the US out of its current low-volatility "death spiral" and create more positive economic outcomes.

She shares the open secret that most office workers only spend an average of 30 hours a week completing productive work. Her schedule allows for an ideal work/life balance that so many people strive for, but never achieve. Let's look at how she did it. Questions and Answers To kick things off… why did you choose to go with a 25-30 hour week in your company? Are your employees only getting paid for 30 hours, or do they get full-time pay? You also said that your workforce is remote, and you let them be more flexible with their schedules vs having their schedule be roughly the same every week — how has that improved things like employee retention and satisfaction? Have you had trouble finding employees that can manage this freedom? How does this flexibility impact inter-company relationships and staff meetings? Has it created any challenges with your relationships with your clients? Has this reduced schedule hindered your growth at all?Do you include employee improvement or training in that 30-hour week? Why do you think this concept is so hard to normalize — especially in the US? Do you have any final advice or tips that you'd like to share with our audience? Inflation Risk & Commodity Trading with Alex Krainer

Inflation is to hit us big, and threatens our wealth! So, Inflation-Protection (Hedging) is key! Inflation is ‘in the making' due to the Covid19 financial help programs by Central Banks and Governments to buffer an expected economic downturn. This time round, the Federal Reserve's Program is larger than the last few programs taken together. According to Alex Krainer, Hedge Fund Manager, Commodities Trader and advisor to Altana Wealth Management S.A.M. (Monaco), the best tools to protect from inflation are Commodity Futures and Farm Land. The worst investors can do is to invest in stocks, when inflation is a risk. Gold and other precious metals have always been the classic inflation hedge, but Commodities tend to perform even better, Alex is convinced. His book ‘Mastering Uncertainty in Commodities Trading – Generating sustainable Profits through Trend Following', is a deep dive into investing in times of economic uncertainties. Historical Data shows, that printing additional cash creates episodes of Hyper-Inflation and unless ‘re-absorbed' fast by the Central Banks, private (paper) wealth goes ‘up in flames' and loses its purchasing power. When (?) is inflation going to happen, is more difficult to answer. One of the most important lessons in investing is: Don't Trade – but invest! Don't get ahead of yourself, thinking by jumping in and out of stocks you'll turn a guaranteed profit. Plus, you have to be able to ‘stomach' losses. Even the best strategy today, may turn out wrong in future, making you lose money. A risk management strategy is as important as your investment strategy. A solid risk management strategy prevents you from chasing your own tail and panicking when the markets turn against you. His Key advise for Life: Invest – don't trade. Think what you want to achieve. Make sure you turn that into a clear investment strategy, have a ‘cushion' and a risk management strategy to buffer potential periods of losses and stick to your approach. Don't panic and remember when you start trading (rather than investing) the odds are against you. Initially founded as a news agency in 1851, today Thomson Reuters is frequently cited by media watchdogs as an "invisible information giant" worth monitoring closely as it delivers unprecedented amounts of data, along with automation and digitisation solutions to financial institutions, governments and corporates around the globe. Sneha holds a BA (Hons) degree in Politics with International Studies from the University of Warwick in the UK and prior to joining Thomson Reuters in 2001, she was a Commodities Trader for Cargill in South Africa and traded money markets and foreign exchange at CFC Bank in Kenya. Sneha is a member of the Board of the US Chamber of Commerce US-Africa Business Center, the One Young World (PYW) Africa Local Organising Committee, the Young Presidents Organization (YPO) and the African Leadership Network (ALN). She is also a Steering Committee member for 30% Southern Africa and actively involved in the World Economic Forum (WEF) on Africa's Partnering Against Corruption Initiative (PACI). In this conversation with Andile Masuku - taped at a corporate-backed gender equality event called Voices of Change hosted in Sandton recently - Sneha demystifies Thomson's operations by explaining the firm's business model and unpacking their Africa growth strategy. Listen in to hear how Sneha and her team are working to keep Thomson relevant and profitable at a time when very few large data, insights and technology-focused corporations seem content to stay in their lane. Also, Sneha's elucidation of the "firewall" between Thomson's news and consulting businesses is well worth a listen.
