E231 - Janet Hurley - Glove Shy, the story of Brian and his Fighting Career Inside and Outside the RingGlove Shy: A Sister's ReckoningThe heartbeat of family life is the thump of fists on a heavy bag.In the 1970s, Janet Hurley's older brother, Brian, was the teenage protégé of a World Heavyweight Champion who lived in their hometown. Brian was a young man of brilliance and wit. His talents were broad, yet boxing was the path he chose. And, soon enough, family life revolved around his training, his bouts, his future: Olympic medals? A pro career?Glove Shy is a tender-tough memoir, a loving look at how a sport as elemental as boxing can obscure the powerful forces this family never saw coming. But, when one of your own is in the ring, slugging, being slugged, what else can matter?Glove Shy is a well-told story of what happens when the blows hit far beyond the ropes. Hurley is a talented writer, with strong and vivid prose. She is also brave, willing to get in the ring with her own past.About the AuthorJanet Hurley was born and raised in the Hudson Valley of upstate New York before heading south to Carolina (the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) for its undergraduate creative writing program. She has lived in the south ever since, most recently in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western NC, where she and her husband David raised their daughter, Maren, and son, Liam. After receiving an MFA in Creative Non-fiction from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA, in 2008, Janet published feature stories and profiles for North Carolina-based magazines, Our State and VERVE. She also ran a small business, True Ink, which provided creative opportunities for young writers. In 2011, she co-founded Asheville Writers in the Schools and Community (AWITSC), a non-profit committed to racial equity and social change through the power of arts, culture and restorative self-expression. And, from 2013-2016, she taught creative non-fiction and writing for the media as an adjunct in the undergraduate writing program at Warren Wilson College. The onset of the Covid-19 pandemic forced many transitions, including, fortunately, a re-focus on her own writing. Glove Shy: A Sister's Reckoning is Janet's first book-length publication. She lives in Asheville, NC with her husband David and their dog, Wilson.https://www.janethurley.me/MindShift Power Podcast is for teens, about teens, and anyone who works with teens. Dr. Joli Hamilton has spent years studying the unique aspects of romantic relationships and helps couples who color outside the lines to create partnerships that are custom built for their authentic selves. Today on the Women's Vibrancy Code, Dr. Joli, the jealousy expert, defines what creative consensual non-monogamy is and what it is not. She and Maraya discuss how jealousy and envy are different and how to have more vibrant and honest relationships by addressing the “monogamy” elephant in the room!  IN THIS EPISODE:  [01:38] Episode introduction and Joli Hamilton professional background. [07:40] What is jealousy and how is it different from envy? [17:29] The unhealthy response to jealousy. [22:10] What is creative non-monogamy and the cultural implications surrounding it? [28:47] Marya's response and what non-monogamy looks like outside of the sexual aspects. [38:59] Episode recap and how to reignite the passion in your relationship in one single conversation. KEY TAKEAWAYS:  Jealousy is distinct from envy. It is the fear of interruption of a love bond with a special someone and a threat to survival. Whereas envy is wanting what someone else has.  In the context of jealousy, violence is more prevalent than we give ourselves credit for. Individuals should seek out therapy, support and foundational safety when there is any type of violence or control issues present in a relationship. Monogamy and non-monogamy extends to more aspects of a relationship than just s€x. It can and should be explicitly defined in how you handle your finances, friendships, travel, parenting and more. It's all relevant when making clear and loving agreements in your relationship. RESOURCE LINKS Coupon Code:  MARAYA (Use this code and get $1000 off Joli's flagship program!!) In this episode, Sam talks about Otto Warburg's incredible discovery regarding cancer cells and the research done by Nazi scientists. Stay tuned to hear what Sam has to share about his book, Ravenous, and the connections between diet and cancer.  IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: What motivated Sam to write about Otto Warburg? Otto Warburg's fascinating discovery about what makes cancer cells unique. Nazi researchers were way ahead of their time in discovering the link between environmental toxins and people developing metabolic diseases and cancer. What happened to much of the advanced research done by German scientists during the war years? What happened in the 1950s that entirely changed the direction of medical research on cancer? The accidental and surprising discovery that was made about the benefits of mustard gas. Insulin drives metabolic disease and causes cancer cells to grow. Why most Americans could develop cancer. Why do you need to get your fasting insulin checked? What does fructose do in the body that differs from what is done by other sugars? Some of the changes that Sam made in his life after researching his book, Ravenous. The cancers that you will be more likely to develop if you eat too often. In the United States, contemporary discourse concerning “the border” almost always centers around the country's southern boundary shared with Mexico. Rarely, in conversations public or private among Americans is there any discussion of the nation's northern border with Canada. Whatever the reason (ignorance, indifference, or both) all this changes with the publication of All the Agents and Saints: Dispatches from the U.S. Borderlands (UNC Press, 2017). In this stunning comparison of life along the U.S.-Mexico and U.S.-Canada borderlands, Stephanie Elizondo Griest, the award-winning travel writer and Professor of Creative Non-fiction at UNC Chapel Hill, busts the conceptual block that views “the border” as a place of exceptionality. Focusing on the modern-day experiences of Tejanos/as, Mexican nationals, and Akwesasne Mohawks, Griest uncovers startling similarities between people and places separated by nearly 2,000 miles. Whether the issue is drug trafficking, confrontations with the Border Patrol, assimilation, environmental pollution, or health epidemics, Griest records the echoing testimonies of northern and southern border dwellers. Yet, amidst the harrowing tales of struggle and loss, Griest finds another commonality…transcendence! In both the northern and southern borderlands, residents, artists, and people of faith stand their ground by staging individual and collective battles against the forces that threaten communities and livelihoods. Beautifully written with force, empathy, and passion, All the Agents and Saints is required reading for those wishing to transcend the ignorance and indifference that drives so much of the social and political divisions of our day. David-James Gonzales (DJ) is Assistant Professor of History at Brigham Young University. He is a historian of the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands, the development of multi-ethnic/racial cities, and the evolution of Latina/o identity and politics. His research centers on the relationship between Latina/o politics and the metropolitan development of Orange County, CA throughout the 20th century. You may follow him on Twitter @djgonzoPhD. Dr. Lea Povozhaev earned her PhD in Medical Rhetoric in 2014, an MFA in Creative Non-fiction in 2007, and studied literature and composition prior to that. She traveled through Russia as a young woman before she was married at 21, and has great respect and interest in Russia and multicultural relationships. A memoir on her multicultural marriage and conversion to Orthodoxy was recently re-published as Finding Love, Family, and Faith: Living the Orthodox Christian Tradition. Lea has published a number of essays and personal narratives, and some more recent blog posts appear on the Orthodox Christian Network. She has spoken to audiences interested in topics ranging from academics and writing to faith and culture. She is a passionate and energized speaker who is skilled at engaging audiences.  Lea aims to help others seek holistic approaches to wellness that carefully consider the relationship between the entire body and soul of human beings made in the image and likeness of Jesus Christ. She makes a compelling case for considering wellness according to how the Orthodox Church understands personhood as body and spirit. Cynthia talks with Lea about natural immunity, and they get into a topic that can be a hot bed for discussion, that is, vaccinations.  There are many studies, past and present, that are examining the safety of vaccinations.  Lea discusses those studies, and also looks at it from a Christian world view.  She also discusses how she was drawn into it from the beginning.  Becoming Whole:  Building Natural Immunity in the Body and Soul

Monetizing Your Creativity - Pursuing a career in film, television, writing, theatre, music & design with your talents

Welcome to the first in a series of themed episodes of Monetizing Your Creativity. In this edition, Marvin pulls segments of Fred’s interviews with arts specialists who dedicate time and energy not only to their own studio work but also invest in the development and teaching of other individuals. Chrysalis is an organization that discovers the abilities in individuals with disabilities and trains them for volunteer or part-time / full-time employment. As part of programming to explore and develop a variety of latent artistic talents and mastery of social situations, artists who are excellent in their own personal arts activities encourage the learners to expand personal and professional horizons through various forms of art … painting, sculpting, movement, speech and music. A variety of these specialists spoke with Fred about how their teaching of arts to others actually enhanced their own creative energy and output. Both the therapists and their students have found ways to monetize their own creativity in a way that allows them to do what they love on a daily basis. In fact, the very process of creating artwork is therapeutic and the products of that energy can be sold in order to earn money to continue the production of more art. Whatever craft category you may love to work in, don’t deny yourself the pleasure of sharing the love you have for the artist and talent in you with others. Water those human seedlings and watch them grow and thrive and create more original work to share with the world.
