On episode 94, Micah and Brian talk about Brian's media review flight on Aero from the Van Nuys, CA airport to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. But first, we hear from Listener Mike who tells us his tips on having a second wallet when he travels and what cards, including duplicates, he packs with him. Sadly, there was no question from Listener Lu this episode. For the main segment, Brian and Micah talk about the incredible flight he was able to experience on Aero. Yes, the flight was provided free of charge to Brian. However, this does not stop him from expressing his views on the flight and service. As he will say… it's all about the Passenger Experience. In addition to reviewing the flight, Brian was also able to interview Liz Mazzei, Head of Marketing, and Mikael Pelet, Chief Operating Officer at Aero. The opening and closing music is provided by the Madalitso Youth Choir as they sing their Welcome song and their Good By song, recorded at the lobby of The Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia. And if you would like to hear them sing live, get in touch with us at Brian@TheJourneyIsTheReward.ORG to learn about the group trip we are planning in late September or October, 2025. We hope you enjoy the show!

This episode features an interview with Dr. Rachelle Ornan, Director of Cabin Research and Passenger Experience and Associate Technical Fellow for Boeing Commercial Airplanes, specializing in the experience and design of commercial aircraft interiors. Before planes, she worked on spacecraft as a Human Factors Engineer and Industrial Designer for NASA. We talk with Rachelle about idealized design, balancing art and science, and what it takes to create a peaceful space to house the stress of travel.3 Takeaways:Customer experience includes elements that reach the end-user on a subconscious or emotional level.Consider all potential users when designing a customer experience.Customers may have generational differences in what they expect from the experience. Up-and-coming generations are often looking to be treated to an aspirational experience they don't get anywhere else.Key Quotes:“There is a transformation that happens when people feel part of something – when they actually feel moved by the experience. That's the kind of research that we invest in and those are the kinds of insights and design nuggets that come from a really deep-seated place, an emotional place, a human place. When we translate that into the built environment, you've got a lot of people nodding their heads and getting on board.”“I think that's kind of aspirational – to get treated experientially...being treated to a beautiful interior that's nice, clean, bright, well lit and people are smiling and happy to be going somewhere. I think that makes everybody feel good.”“I really believe that travel helps economies. It connects us to each other. It pulls people out of poverty...This is the big stuff that I think Boeing connects the world to.”Bio:Dr. Rachelle N. Ornan, is an Associate Technical Fellow for Boeing Commercial Airplanes specializing in the experience and design of commercial aircraft interiors. Her background includes lighting and concept interior development for the CST-100 Starliner capsule, visual perception research, space hotel concepts for NASA, feature willingness-to-pay, and a comprehensive ethnographic study of interiors. Currently, she directs passenger experience research and bridges communication between sales and marketing, engineering and airlines to ensure a commercially viable, preferred product which maximizes revenue. Rachelle holds a PhD in experimental psychology, and a master's in Industrial Design from North Carolina State University. She is a dog-mom, an avid skier, backpacker, competitive synchronized swimmer and currently pursuing her boat captain's license.Thank you to our friendsThis episode is brought to you by IBM. In this episode, co-hosts Max Flight and Mary Kirby consider whether the aviation industry is poised for a faster-than-expected recovery given the extraordinary pent-up demand for air travel. They discuss IATA’s latest survey, which suggests that people will fly once they receive the COVID-19 vaccine. But has the pandemic reset our passenger experience expectations?Next, Cathay Pacific’s decision to let first and business passengers remove their masks when sleeping in the lie-flat position has generated a mixed response from readers. Some reckon that it makes common sense, others see it as classist and unfair. Mary and Max explore both sides of the argument. Finally, aviation seems to be largely in agreement that, in a post-COVID world, its eco-credentials must improve. Myriad new ideas have been tabled to date including new turboprops, blended wing body aircraft, hybrid electric aircraft, plus new turbofans and synthetic fuel, not to mention exploratory studies into hydrogen-powered aircraft. A former executive for Pratt & Whitney, Max shares some insight into the challenges of going green, and some of his favorite ideas.

Jodie Bare started her new job as the Columbus Regional Airport Authority's chief innovation officer in early January. Her focus was simple: find ways to use technology to improve the passenger experience. Half a year later, the world looks very different – especially within a travel industry reeling from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. But Bare is still focused on finding ways to improve the passenger experience, even as the world has changed. "The pandemic just shaped that vision a little bit differently," Bare said. Bare shared examples of the way that vision is evolving during a recent taping of our Women of Influence podcast. Check out the full episode to hear more about her work at the airport and her career.
How has the passenger experience changed during the pandemic? In no good way, says Seth Miller, founder and editor of PaxEx.aero. Although less-full flights mean more space, airlines are halting or limiting food service, keeping lounges closed, and changing the way IFE is delivered. These are all good and necessary measures, Miller notes, but the passenger experience as we knew it is changing.Understand more about the airline industry with Airline Weekly.

The ISDA Secure Transportation and Executive Protection News Podcast for Tuesday, October 23rd, 2018 ====================== In Executive Protection News From Fox News Explosive device found at George Soros’ home: report An explosive device was found on Monday at the New York home of billionaire George Soros. The Wall Street Journal, citing local law enforcement, reported that police received a phone call from the Bedford residence in Westchester County about a suspicious package. An employee that works at the home found the package and opened it, revealing what appeared to be an explosive device, according to a press release from the Bedford Police Department. The employee then placed the package in a wooded area until authorities arrived. The department told Fox News that a suspicious package was found in a mailbox. Police referred Fox News to the F.B.I's New York office, which did not confirm the report. Soros was not home at the time of the incident, according to the New York Times. https://www.foxnews.com/us/explosive-device-found-at-george-soros-home-report ====================== In Travel Security News From Transportation Security Administration TSA releases roadmap for expanding biometrics technology The Transportation Security Administration today released its plan to expand the use of biometrics technology as part of its continued effort to enhance security and the traveler experience. The TSA Biometrics Roadmap for Aviation Security and the Passenger Experience will guide the agency’s biometric efforts to modernize aviation passenger identity verification in the coming years. “With the threat to aviation evolving every day, developing the next generation of security technology with our industry partners is critically important,” said TSA Administrator David Pekoske. “By expanding our use of biometrics, TSA secures its position as a global leader in aviation security and advances global transportation security standards.” https://www.tsa.gov/news/releases/2018/10/15/tsa-releases-roadmap-expanding-biometrics-technology ====================== In Business of Executive Protection News From International Security Driver Association For those looking for work – an article on Motivation Authored by ISDA Member Bill Peeler I wanted to take a moment and point out something for the new and old alike that are looking for work in the security industry. If you have properly prepared for your journey into this field you most likely have paid large sums of money for training, equipment, travel and all the best seller books available, this is your “investment” in addition to time. Now, if you are like me, we have a higher calling that we need to answer to, mine is called “Tina,” who will want to know what kind of return can be expected on your investment if any. Now, you are set – go-bag is packed, telephone is charged and your ready to leap to answer that call that will come in any day… ok so the call hasn’t come “yet” and you still need to put food on the table and don’t forget that “higher calling” you will need to answer to, so you fill your time with “outside” work to pay the bills. You realize that, “hey maybe that phone won’t ring on it’s own.” I need to strengthen my network and get out and bout so I can make some contacts. http://securitydriver.com/11/for-those-looking-for-work-an-article-on-motivation-by-bill-peeler/ ==================== In Technology News From Strategic Marketing Solutions One Million Tweet Map – Big Data at Your Fingertips The One Million Tweet Map maps the last geo-localized tweets delivered by the twitter stream API. The Map data is updated in real-time – YES – IN REAL-TIME – and it keeps “only” the last one million tweets on a global scale. Each second, about fifty new tweets are added (and the fifty oldest tweets are removed to keep the same number of tweets on the map). Why not higher amounts? They are limited by the Twitter stream, but they could do much higher. To put it matter-of-factly – this map deals with big data effortlessly. This data is powered by Maptimize, a geographical clustering engine for online maps to display and analyze big geo-localized data. Features include: Clusters of tweets with numerical value Heat Map where you can pinpoint tweet hotbeds Keyword filter Hashtag filter Time filter – from 5 minutes to 6 hours Trending filter in a geographical area View tweets in real time in a geographical area Map reset button How it Works Simply enter and set your filters in a particular geolocation and click on the clusters in that area to start diving into the tweets. You have the ability to zoom right down to a particular neighborhood or street. After you have found your tweets, click on the numbered circle. A window will pop up with those tweets. In the pop up you can see when the tweet was posted (time/date), who posted it, and the contents of the tweets including the ability to click on any links. The One Million Tweet Map can and should be used by Corporate Security, Law Enforcement, Brand Protection Officers, Private Investigations, Social Media Intelligence and Open Source Intelligence. https://larrysnow.me/one-million-tweet-map-big-data-fingertips/ ==================== Links to all news stories mentioned in this podcast are available at the archive website securitydrivernews.libsyn.com. Join our usual team and Matt and Andy from the A320 Podcast for this week's trawl through the big aviation stories of the week. It's fair to say that it's not been a good week if you're a customer of one low cost airline, a national carrier flirts with household waste and bio-fuels and we talk about the new monster of the skies which is the brain child of the Microsoft co-founder. RGN deputy editor John Walton is in conversation with Olli Vainio, a frequently flying Finn with a wealth of knowledge about national carrier Finnair, its passenger experience, and its markets. John and Olli explore how this niche carrier is expanding after a period of consolidation, and discuss how the airline attracts a wide range of passengers. How does Finland’s busiest domestic route link in with a wider European network and one of the region’s largest Asian networks? What aspects of the passenger experience have been created to appeal to domestic, European and Asian travellers? How does primary local competition Norwegian’s free inflight connectivity affect what Finnair provides to its passengers? And what do Finns really think about all the Marimekko and Moomins?
RGN Contributing Editor John Walton is in conversation with Seth Miller, Jason Rabinowitz and Mary Kirby in Hamburg at the Aircraft Interiors Expo 2017, talking about what feels like a myriad new seats at this year’s show. How has Mirus evolved its barebones slimline into a fully featured seat? What was behind the curtain at B/E Aerospace? What’s the new “compact staggered” business class seat all about? Is the B/E Aspire seat as revolutionary as rumoured? And what else was new at AIX17?
RGN contributing editor John Walton is in conversation with German New Zealander Kai Koenig, talking about the passenger experience in New Zealand and on trans-Tasman routes between Australia and the Land of the Long White Cloud. With growing international focus on this innovative region, including all three of its major airline groups now planning next-generation inflight connectivity, what options do travellers have — from barebones LCC to ultra-luxe first class suites? And how will the unique passenger experience demand from this region affect both seats, wifi and service of the airlines that serve it?
RGN contributing editor John Walton is in conversation with Reuters’ European airline correspondent Victoria Bryan in Berlin, discussing what’s going on with Lufthansa, airberlin and Eurowings in the German and European airline markets. What’s next for the seemingly endless industrial relations disputes? With Lufthansa taking over airberlin planes for Eurowings and Austrian, as well as turning Brussels Airlines into part of the Eurowings group, it is clearly a time of change for one of the world’s most influential airlines. John and Victoria also discuss Lufthansa #PaxEx, including the carrier’s expansion of inflight connectivity to its short-haul fleet.
RGN deputy editor John Walton is in conversation with Jamie Freed, a Reuters senior correspondent covering aviation and business in Sydney. This episode, John and Jamie delve deep into the context and background of Australia’s airline duopoly and the growing strength of Qantas’ position. How is Qantas thriving given Australia’s end-of-the-world location? Why is Jetstar so successful when other airlines’ dual-brand low-cost carrier strategies have failed? What’s next for troubled Virgin Australia? Why are most Australian airports still split into separate international and domestic buildings? How have Australia’s airlines leveraged their partnerships with the Gulf carriers and other international airlines? And how will the first nonstop hop on the Kangaroo Route from Australia to London shake everything up?
RGN contributing editor John Walton is in conversation with New Yorker Jason Rabinowitz, director of airline research at Routehappy, about New York’s three, four, five or six airports (depending on how you count them), the #PaxEx in the world’s largest aviation market, and future plans from New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. What’s going on with “third world” LaGuardia? Why is JFK still a mess? Is the Port Authority making things worse? Will we ever see decent public transportation to the airports? How do the airlines at JFK, Newark, LaGuardia and elsewhere line up? Will Norwegian’s Stewart operation be a Ryanair-style “New York-ish” success? And what needs to happen for change to be possible in the future?
