Yfke Laanstra is Futurist, Keynote Speaker, Trainer and Author of the Dutch book 'Bits, Bytes & Bewustzijn' ('Computer Code & Consciousness'). She is passionate about the cutting edge of consciousness, computer technology and human potential and focusses on the implications and applications of computer technology on our humanness, wellness and consciousness. She is the Dutch Transformative Technology Salon leader, ambassador for Heartmath and The Center for Humane Technology; speaker at The Next Nature Network and Dutch chapter leader for the global Consciousness Hacking community. She always felt inspired to find the answers to the larger questions in life like 'who am I?', 'what am I?' and 'why am I here?'. To discover what it truly means to be Human. To be fully present, within herself, with another person and in the world she lives in. Especially in the current times, where technology is booming and our reality is changing by the minute, this quest is (and will become) more important than ever. Computer technology fascinates her immensely. She feels deeply connected to it and at the same time senses the intense tension it creates. The wonderful opportunities, moral challenges but also the existential dangers. What is (still) real, what is artificial? Is it responsible to reprogram our DNA? How do we actually relate to technology? Should (hu)man and machine merge? Is it possible to upload our consciousness into a computer? What is the true nature of reality? She invites you to step out of your comfort zone and into the future.

Have you ever wondered whether the brains of computer programmers are wired differently? Are there specific parts of the brain that are dedicated to computer coding? Scientists have outlined other networks in the brain, like those involved in language, but the neural basis of computer code comprehension has remained a mystery. We might call Python, Java, and C++ programming “languages,” but are they represented in the brain in the same way as natural languages? Anna Ivanova, a scientist at MIT’s Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, chats with us to uncover the answer. Her research uses functional MRI to find the areas in the brain most activated by reading computer code and whether they overlap with those activated by reading natural language. We also discuss the history of coding and the possibility that humans could evolve a brain network solely responsible for computer programming. Music by Kevin MacLeod licensed under CC BY 4.0

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.05.24.096180v1?rss=1 Authors: Liu, Y.-F., Kim, J., Wilson, C., Bedny, M. Abstract: Despite the importance of programming to modern society, the cognitive and neural bases of code comprehension are largely unknown. Programming languages might 'recycle' neurocognitive mechanisms originally used for natural languages. Alternatively, comprehension of code could depend on fronto-parietal networks shared with other culturally derived symbol systems, such as formal logic and math. Expert programmers (average 11 years of programming experience) performed code comprehension and memory control tasks while undergoing fMRI. The same participants also performed language, math, formal logic, and executive control localizer tasks. A left-lateralized fronto-parietal network was recruited for code comprehension. Patterns of activity within this network distinguish between "for" loops and "if" conditional code functions. Code comprehension overlapped extensively with neural basis of formal logic and to a lesser degree math. Overlap with simpler executive processes and language was low, but laterality of language and code covaried across individuals. Cultural symbol systems, including code, depend on a distinctive fronto-parietal cortical network. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info

WHY LIFE IS LIKE A SET OF COMPUTER PROGRAMS with PAUL MORRIS Are we programmed, along with every other living organism, by the great coder in the sky? By coder I mean one who programs computers. I’m not just discussing people and animals, I’m including plants as well.  And not just application programs, currently known as “Aps,” but operating systems and utilities. I'll explain all this during the show. With 25 years of professional IT experience, 40 years of studying human behavior and a strong foundation in spirituality and science, I fell quite comfortable in giving this subject a go.

U., Fedorenko, E. Abstract: Computer programming is a novel cognitive tool that has transformed modern society. An integral part of programming is code comprehension: the ability to process individual program tokens, combine them into statements, which, in turn, combine to form a program. What cognitive and neural mechanisms support this ability to process computer code? Here, we used fMRI to investigate the role of two candidate brain systems in code comprehension: the multiple demand (MD) system, typically recruited for math, logic, problem solving, and executive function, and the language system, typically recruited for linguistic processing. Across two experiments, we examined brain responses to code written in two programing languages: Python, a text-based programming language (Experiment 1) and ScratchJr, a graphical programming language for children (Experiment 2). To isolate neural activity evoked by code comprehension per se rather than by processing program content, we contrasted responses to code problems with responses to content-matched sentence problems. We found that the MD system exhibited strong bilateral responses to code in both experiments. In contrast, the language system responded strongly to sentence problems, but only weakly or not at all to code problems. We conclude that code comprehension relies primarily on domain-general executive resources, demonstrating that the MD system supports the use of novel cognitive tools even when the input is structurally similar to natural language.
