44: How (& Why) I Developed My Creative Thought Journey Process for Knit & Crochet Pattern Designers

Pattern Design Circle Podcast

In March I posted on my Instagram account asking what folks wanted to hear about on the podcast, and someone asked to hear how I created the Creative Thought Journey... so here you are! It's a process that I created to replicate the process my brain naturally went through to create several of my own knitting pattern designers. When I wanted to share it with other pattern designers, I transformed it into a step by step process that any creative (knit or crochet pattern designer or otherwise) could use to develop new ideas. The power of it is that it gets you away from the prompt, onto a personal journey influenced by your lived experiences, and at a design that's different from other folks working with the same prompt. Tune into this episode of the Pattern Design Circle Podcast to get the full story of how and why I developed my signature Creative Thought Journey process. Want to try it out for yourself? Join 52 Weeks of Creativity to get a weekly creative prompt along with the Creative Thought Journey steps, and end with 52+ new design ideas one year from now.Join the Pattern Design Circle for community support and help elevating your designs and business.

HT1177 - Allocating Our Creative Thought A friend of mine just recently returned from a workshop in which he was the only photographer using a digital camera. All the other participants were using 4x5 film. He confessed this was the first time he'd spent so much time with film photographers. One observation he came away with was how much effort and thought went into how to expose and develop the film compared to the relative ease with which he could accomplish the same thing with his digital tools.

“I was raised in a violent environment, so, as much as I want to be positive, it's just satisfying to do some of that petty stuff. As much as I don't want to, as much as I'm like, ‘I can't- that's ratchet- whoo wham,' like, that's me. That's how I grew up... There is a lot of pressure to be a positive person.” Ever Forward Club's Ashanti Branch is joined by Leo Mercer. As an Oakland native, Leo has been running creative campaigns and executing community organizing work in Oakland since 2009. Leo has a full, empathetic heart, and he's always thinking intensely about what is best for his community. And in this work, as he's discovered contradictions and Catch-22's over the years, Leo has consistently re-assessed his craft, how he carries himself, and what it means to be “a tree with onion roots.” We know you'll enjoy getting to know Leo in this week's episode. (1:30) Ashanti's introduction. (10:55) Leo introduces himself, his work as a musical artist, and his drive to do good community work in Oakland. Then, he and Ashanti reflect on Leo's on-stage appearance with President Obama. (16:15) Leo shares the front of his mask - blind strength, creative abilities, a tree with onion roots. (18:00) Ashanti shares the front of his mask - caring, dedicated, intense - and how ignorance is not actually bliss. (24:45) Leo shares the back of his mask - numbness, pressure, always talking to myself. He reflects on all of the Catch-22's and conflicts of interests he sees within his community and within himself. (30:50) Ashanti shares a drawing created by students during his visit to Yuma, Arizona. Check out the video podcast on the Branch Speaks Youtube Channel. (37:40) Ashanti shares the back of his mask - not enough, worry, my brother's mental health. (45:20) Ashanti and Leo sit with the phrase, “I am not the enemy,” and how this phrase has particular significance as it relates to their gender and the color of their skin. (57:30) Leo shares his current projects and how you can get in touch with him. --- Connect with Leo Mercer: Personal Instagram: instagram.com/leo_mercer Business Instagram: instagram.com/mercerbrotherhood --- Create your own mask anonymously at millionmask.org If you are interested in being on the Face to Face podcast, email us at everforwardclub@gmail.com --- Connect with Ashanti Branch: Instagram: instagram.com/branchspeaks Facebook: facebook.com/BranchSpeaks Twitter: twitter.com/BranchSpeaks LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/ashantibranch Website: branchspeaks.com --- Send in a voice message: anchor.fm/branch-speaks/message --- Connect with Ever Forward Club: Instagram: instagram.com/everforward Facebook: facebook.com/everforwardclub Twitter: twitter.com/everforwardclub LinkedIn: linkedin.com/company/the-ever-forward-club

Welcome back, friends. Good to have you! Anyone that is in the business of serving others, is always looking for a better, faster, more efficient, process, teaching, training course, or program that will continue helping their customers. But you most likely know as well as I do, that that “ain't easy” as they say where I come from. And keeping up with your competition and the ever-changing internet, sometimes makes you a little bit crazy. Right? Only you know what your customers want, so I cannot really speak to that. But when it comes to you needing better ideas or ways of serving them, then I think we can talk. Actually… The bulk of my material today comes from me reading the book “The Breakout Principle” by Herbert Benson, M.D. and William Proctor. My mentor recommended it to me. So now I'm recommending it to you as well. This book explains how practically anyone can quickly and easily have creative ideas almost at will. Obviously, you will have to do something to achieve it, but that's the point, isn't it? Nothing is FREE, it all takes time, energy, and hard work. But if you put in the work, you will see the results. In fact, almost ALWAYS you already put in the work, but just didn't know how to get the results you wanted. Right? You did 80% of the effort, now you need to know how to extract the benefits. This isn't from me, this comes straight from medical research over many, many years. It's ALL in the book. Have you ever struggled with anything at all? Trying to solve a puzzle or problem? Looking for a solution with seemingly none in sight. After considerable time and effort, you give up. You just throw your hands in the air or pound your fists on a table (or a wall). Maybe you stomp off into another room to pout. After all, we are just grown-up kids most of the time. Right? Later that day, or possibly the next, and sometimes in a dream, you have an idea! Your solution just came to you out of nowhere. Out of thin air, an idea popped into your mind. You're excited. Even elated! Then you wonder to yourself… …how did that happen? And even more so… …can I do it again? Listen in for the answer!! You can find the book: The Breakout Principle by Herbert Benson, M.D. and William Proctor on Amazon. ======================== If you think you know of some improvements that could be made, let me know. After purchasing a new camera with graduation money, Zachary and his dad took to the streets of Chicago to photograph street art on boarded-up buildings. These photos captured both pain and beauty and were transformed into an incredible book titled, Boarded Up Chicago: Storefront Images Days After the George Floyd Riots. A message of love and unity, all seen through the lens of a father and his son.

Thomas Henley is the founder of the Thoughty Auti Podcast and the Aspergers Growth channel, both media hubs for teaching others about autism and mental health. With a wealth of experience in public advocacy and local media, Thomas inspires autistic individuals across the globe with his athletic endeavors, personal experiences and scientific insights. In this episode, Thomas talks to an artist called Ina (@superspectrumgirl) about what it means to be creative and whether autism influences someone's creative abilities in a positive or negative way. Ina was the quiet, geeky girl with big glasses in her school library and has always had a strong passion for artistic expression. Thomas grew up with a more logical and factual inclination towards the sciences but has since started a few creative ventures later in his university life. Whilst both are diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, Ina has her own little secret that adds a bit of spice to her work... she has synaesthesia! Does autism make you more or less creative? How does one find their creative outlet? How do you get over the initial effort to start something new? What tricks and mindsets are important for developing a fun, calming, creative hobby? We chat about all the aspects of creativity... how it helps your mental health, the many ways of expressing yourself, how many autistic people go against the triad of impairments with their creative abilities, and what aspects of autism make these abilities easier or harder to manifest. Both Thomas and Ina find a lot of common ground on the topic and both share a passion for sharing a little bit of their soul with the outside world. In this age of social media, it can be hard to get your stuff to a high place, but it also opens many doors for branching out to all continents.
