In this 6-minute deep dive, Dr. Jason Weber and I break down a real-world case where an athlete was medically cleared post-ACL reconstruction (patella tendon graft), but performance testing told a different story. After a few run-throughs, SpeedSig data flagged something off—significantly reduced vertical force production. That led to a closer look, and sure enough, the issue was a symptomatic patella tendon that hadn't been fully rehabbed.___Save on your re-certification to the NSCA and CSCCa with best price CEUs

I am not endorsing GOATA. I say this at the beginning of this episode and want to say it again, I know Rick Stanzi from our Iowa Football connection. He works for GOATA. I had a convo with him and Gary about what they think and believe. I do not agree with most of what they say/said. You will hear me disagree with and question them multiple times in this conversation. What you wont hear is me, Rick, or Gary be rude to one another when we talk and disagree with one another. People can disagree on a topic and still be kind to one another. I will say it again, I do not think GOATA "laws" are correct. Yes training the foot is important. Yes the head is important, so are the eyes as they drive sensory input. But the notion of columns, spirals, reverse locomotion, etc... I do not agree with, nor do I think they make sense. Tried and true S&C that has been applied with: Speed/agility work on the field/courtWeight room lifting with: proper periodization for athletes based on training age, movement ability, prior injury, sport, position on sport Conditioning work on and off feet (again depending on time of year). To cherry pick and say GOATA and what they teach violates the principles of S&C that are how athletes train, get stronger, faster, more powerful, better shape and stay healthy for decades. You hear me say this in the episode. ___Save on your re-certification to the NSCA and CSCCa with best price CEUs

Yes it is important to read research papers. However, they are not gospel. They are one of the mediums strength and conditioning (S&C) coaches need to consume. S&C coaches also need to consume textbooks, books, podcasts, webinars, etc...In this video you will watch me interview Dr. Trevor Short about his 2025 paper "Implementing the Reverse Acute to Chronic Workload Ratio Model to Improve Movement Capacity and Roster Availability: An Example Using Data from the NFL." Today's podcast features strength and performance coach, Ethan Reeve. Ethan is the director of strength and performance for MondoSport USA. He is the former president of the CSCCa, and has 44 years of experience coaching in college and high school ranks. In addition to decades in NCAA athletic performance, Reeve was a SEC champion wrestler, and was the head coach of the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga wrestling program from 1985 to 1990, achieving 5 Southern Conference titles in 6 years. In the process of strength and conditioning/physical preparation; we can never get too far from the process of physical education and routinely observing the core qualities of athleticism An interesting element in sport performance, and sport coaching in the past decades is that, compared to the pre-2000's era, there are less coaches now who have physical education backgrounds. Perhaps, this is because, as the industry moves forward, physical preparation/athletic performance has swung more towards the quantitative aspects, than the “art” form of the process. Maybe it's that most strength and conditioning jobs are working with high school or college athletes who are “further” along in their athletic development. Maybe it's how the role and funding for physical education has been devalued over time. Despite all of this, as I get older, the more and more I realize just how much physical education has to offer, not only young athletes, but also the thought process in working with more established ones, and I believe physical education, and multi-sport coaching principles (such as wrestling in the scope of today's show) should be far more common-place in athletic development conversations. On today's podcast, Ethan talks about his blend of the principles found in physical education and wrestling, and how these funnel into a sports performance training session. He speaks on how he views physical training through the eyes of a wrestling coach (of which he was a very successful one) and the learning environment he looks to set up in his training sessions. We discuss “belly up” speed training, key ground-based training movements, and other important principles of building a total athletic development program. The COVID-19 pandemic has flipped the world of strength and conditioning upside down this year. As that battle continues, there's another adversary that faces athletes across the country - an epidemic of injuries brought on by unsafe approaches to training. Frank Wintrich, the football performance coordinator for the UCLA Bruins, became a strength and conditioning coach so he could help young athletes chase their dreams and unlock their potential. In this episode he calls on the strength and conditioning community to examine the elevated risk of injuries right now, and put athlete health above all else.
CSCCa President Ethan Reeve and Vice President Stacey Torman weigh in on a bevy of challenges facing strength and conditioning coaches today. As this challenging year draws to a close, they encourage coaches to lead by example and listen to their peers, sport coaches and athletes to secure a bright future for athletics and the profession.
As the world shut down in the wake of COVD-19, the performing arts world changed. Shows were cancelled, rehearsals suspended and training took on a different form. Many began dancing - and even rehearsing - indoors. Hallways became dance floors, mantle pieces became ballet barres, and somehow we kept going. Due to space constraints, hard floors and a multitude of other factors, many were unable to train as vigorously as they had pre-pandemic. Now as dance studios, schools and companies begin to open their doors once more, we need to prepare our bodies for the challenges dance presents us. Join us in this episode as athletic trainer and strength and conditioning specialist Will Zinser talks about how to prepare to return to the studio. Faster athletes will cover a multitude of other shortcomings in an athletic program. That's why Lee Weber, the head strength and conditioning and football coach at Rose Hill High School in Kansas, prioritizes training speed in his programming. Not only does Weber make speed a priority, he has invested some serious time into understanding how to train speed optimally. Heavily influenced by the philosophy of Tony Holler's "Feed the Cats," Weber has made huge strides in helping his athletes find another gear on the field, court and track.
Justin Lima, the Director of Football Performance at Towson University, joins us to break down how coaches should utilize the concept of acute to chronic training workload to minimize the risk of injury and have confidence in how hard they are pushing their athletes. When it comes to athletic performance, coaches are far more likely to embrace uncomfortably hard training than training that is uncomfortably easy. Lima explains why that's the wrong approach, both for safety, and for truly unlocking athletic potential.

So at least having coaches that are site that at least have the basic lifesaving skills is crucial.” 12:24 “…if someone collapses on the field, where is our closest AED? Where is the cold tub? And who's putting it on? Who's calling EMS? Do we have a way for EMS to get here?” 17:18 “Like, that should be thought about weeks before going into what is our-- what do we want our plan to look like? And then let's stick to it, you know? I think-- I know coaches don't always don't always like to do that, but I think at least having the conversation, it at least like plant a seed, you know? Like, it plants that little seed in their mind that they might be start thinking that way.” 20:36 “…the CSCCA and NSCA joint consensus guidelines for a transition period, safe return to training following an activity. That's a really awesome one. Another one that recently came out from NCAA is the inner association recommendations preventing catastrophic injury and death and collegiate athletes. And then I think the other one that still just a really, really good resource is the 2012 NATA and NSCA joint task force recommendations for preventing sudden death in collegiate conditioning sessions…” 21:28 “You mentioned before we started rolling too, the NCAA inter-association recommendations has a great checklist in it. So really super simple yes, no you know, so you can really evaluate what you're doing and how you're-- you know, if your program meets these.” 22:12 “…people are always welcome to reach out to me or Yasuki or really anyone at KSI…” 22:31

I ask Cori what it takes to earn the trust of student-athletes and coaches, communicating with Millennials and more! Bio: Current: Director of Sports Performance at Western Oregon University where she oversees the strength, conditioning, nutrition and all-around well-being of over 400 student athletes in 13 sports. Past: Spent five years at Washington State University in addition to stops at Colorado State, Ohio State and Western Michigan. In the spring of 2015 she achieved the distinction of Master Strength and Conditioning Coach, one of only 160 in the nation, less than 20 of whom are female. Interview Notes Cori I know I left a lot out of your journey to WOU, so tells us a bit about where you're from and how you got to where you are now. Active family Dad was a coach From Juneau, AK and became a competitive skier and soccer player Broke two vertebrae in her back while competing in college (Fort Lewis College); let to an interest in strength/conditioning Coach Dale Lloyd approached her about pursuing strength/conditioning as a career; set her on the path to where she is now Long-lost Facebook message from Coach Lloyd to her saying how proud he was of her highlights the impact of a mentor's word What was your dad like as a coach, and what did you learn from him about how to lead a team? Consistency High standards Long-lasting relationships with his athletes How to stay strong in the face of circumstances Talk about the importance of developing trust in order to impact and influence the student-athletes you lead; and won't give 100% until they know you know what you're talking about; need to have confidence in yourself without being cocky consistency – senior with a good relationship with her faces the same consequences for mistakes as a freshman fairness the head coaches who are your colleagues harder road than the athletes this is their livelihood will follow their lead as long as within my philosophies Get some quick wins; show progress early What would you want the men in the audience to know or understand about what it is like for a female working in the strength/conditioning profession? Always healthy to put yourself in other people's shoes Always having to prove myself Three females in the country overseeing strength/conditioning for football, all Division II Can't internalize critical comments/conduct; let it roll off; realize it says more about them than you Must find a way to move on/forward from criticism What have you found to be the best techniques to communicate with today's young adults? Don't take yourself too seriously Must be approachable. In the past, wouldn't let student-athletes in to personal life. That won't work now. They need to know that you're not perfect; that you have had failures. You get to observe other coaches interact with their teams every single day; what sticks out to you as something that the great leaders do or have in common? Sonny Lubick – Colorado State football coach – organized, consistent, cared for you, gave her a chance to lead football summer training Fear of disappointing a person more powerful that fear of the person Can you help us sift through the various popular exercise programs (e.g. P90X, cross-fit) and what should those of us just trying to lead healthy lifestyles should be doing? Moderation and consistency Find what works for you Think carefully about the training/background of who is leading the training What habits have been key to your success? Eat in the morning; same thing each day Have a routine, whatever it is that works for you How do you approach balancing success at work and success at home? Incorporate kids into your work if you can Don't wast Where can people go to learn more about you or I?
