On episode 55 I sat down with Angelo Gingerelli of Seton Hall University. Angelo shares some of his personal experiences early on and shares how an early S & C coach was formative in his introduction to the field. Angelo also shares what it means to him to be a coach at Seton Hall, its like family to him he grew up right around the corner and always followed the university closely. I really like one of the first things that Angelo shares, he voices how beneficial it is for young athletes to get involved in track and field or the pursuit of linear speed early on. Its a great start and a great place to build some of the finer elements of an efficient running model at an early age. Angelo also shares that technical works and sport specific movements or starts are important, however linear speed really is the tide that lifts all boats, you have to have a good base line of speed for anything else to be of consequence. Angelo shared an interesting perspective on how he often finds in shape individuals struggle with more rudimentary patterns of movement. He includes the movements that individuals are lacking in to some degree in every warm up session, this provides variance with the given movement pattern. The inclusion of these movements also allow for him to access the limiting factor to proficient movement models. Angelo shares a common sticking point for most in S & C, group size and being able to tailor programming needs to subsets within the group. The rationale he presents with building an adequate expression of strength is well founded. We must master the movement and scaffold through variations that allow for the proper expression of the quality of strength. To rush intensification through adding of load at both a youth and higher level is a mistake that will only limit future potential and perhaps end with injury. One of the biggest indicators for success of a given prep program is consistency of high level work. Angelo shares that its important for athletes and clients to find value in the exercises and joy as well. Angelo shares the 6 foundational movements that he attempts to make athletes proficient in these are the squat, hinge, lunge, hip bridge, upper push, upper pull. Angelo feels that if individuals can show proficiency in these movements they have a great starting point to advance strength and resilience of structures. If individuals struggle to express these movements under light or body weight load, the regression and starting point is simple, firstly we must become more efficient movers. The end of the conversation shines a light on many of the topics featured in Angelo's book that is out currently. Angelo shares how resistance training can be used to help runners run more efficiently, avoid injury, and finish the race in a stronger state. Angelo shares that many in the running community completely leave resistance training out of their regiment. Those that choose to include resistance measures can start small and build upwards from there. Angelo believes that not only means a higher likelihood of success for those that are competitive but also a greater longevity as well, which is truly the end game of most forms of exercise. So apparently the fastest way to get over your ex is to become Gotham's number 1 villain and throw it into a dystopian paradise. Who knew? This is HARLEY QUINN from HBOMAX. All it takes is one bad night to have you tossing out the full clown get up for the Margot Robbie baseball bat toting badass DRIP. Harley does so in an attempt to make it as a solo villain and the shenanigans are only out matched by the jokes-per-second this show provides. It has definitely snuck into the adult cartoon world as a big surprsing way and something you can recommend to vets and non-comic book nerds alike. We give it 10 out of 10 giant hammers. Angelo Gingerelli has been a strength and conditioning coach for two decades and has worked with youth, collegiate and professional athletes. Gingerelli's background in powerlifting and Olympic weightlifting combined with his academic pursuits provided him with a solid background to work with traditional power sport athletes but was lacking when it came to training athletes specializing in longer-duration activities for the first decade of his coaching career. In 2010, he began running road races and ran his first marathon in 2011, where he promptly caught the “marathon bug” and has since run several similar races. During this period, he became interested in applying resistance training principles to endurance sports in an effort to better serve the swimmers and cross-country athletes he was training and in order to improve his own marathon performance. https://www.instagram.com/mr5thround/ Buy Angelo's Book Checkout my Multidirectional Plyometric Course: www.multidirectionalpower.com

Joined this week by returning guests Jack Steiger (NSA Watchlist) and Angelo Gingerelli (Handsome Author) me and the Kahuna let them run wild with the bizarre legacy of Ayn Rand, a female author that's been dead for decades but still brought up on the regular. We have a fun conversation about her flaws, her appeal and why the mere mention of her name brings up such varied responses.
Resistance training should not be considered cross-training for runners - it's essential! Seton Hall Strength and Conditioning Coach Angelo Gingerelli has worked in the field for two decades and has extensive experience working with kids, collegiate athletes, and pro athletes. Angelo's work in the strength and conditioning field, combined with his personal experience as a runner, gives him a unique perspective on how best to integrate the two. His recent book Finish Strong helps runners address common weaknesses and build a foundation of general and specific strength. Angelo also digs into a variety of topics we don't often think about in our typical run training, including: The evolution of Functional Movement Screening and how to apply movement assessments to your running Common movement dysfunctions for runners and other sport-specific athletes The six essential foundational exercises for greater strength and athleticism How we can learn from college athletes that there is no off season, just strategic downtime from your primary sport What are anti-rotation exercises and how do they benefit runners? But the best part is that they give you personalized optimal ranges for each of these biomarkers and a host of ways to improve these markers through diet, lifestyle, or exercise changes. I've personally gotten three Ultimate tests from them and the process is simple, easy, and very eye-opening if you haven't done a deep dive on your biomarkers yet. Of all the investments you can make in your running, this one is like getting a detailed checkup or regularly scheduled maintenance for your internal physiology. Do you do your favorite activity to get in shape OR do you want to get in the proper shape so that you can enjoy your favorite activity? This is a question that I always ask cyclists or runners; because the fact is that many endurance athletes absolutely LOVE their sport but don't always train the proper way to achieve success or avoid injury. Resistance training can not only build strong, good looking muscles, it can also help to improve overall stamina AND stronger muscles are also more resistant to many common injuries. Angelo Gingerelli is a strength coach at Seton Hall University and a running enthusiast; Coach Gingerelli knows that runners have no problem putting in the miles but need some help in the weight room which caused him to write the book, Finish Strong: Resistance Training for Endurance Athletes. Coach Gingerelli talks about the benefits of resistance training for endurance athletes and how the proper workouts allow you to receive the maximal enjoyment from your favorite sport.
