My department's success is not just down to me, it's down to the people I employ and if they work well, then that's obviously a good reflection on me. And if they don't, then obviously I have to carry the can for that. So I think, balancing the demands means having the right people in your teams so you don't feel the need to micromanage. You want to feel perfectly secure that everybody's doing their job.”“To get to be a CFO, I think you have to learn from your mistakes because you are going to make mistakes, but it's how you then move on from them. Right now the investing space has been taken over with talk of cryptocurrencies and NFTs, but those aren't the only alternative investment options for investors. Heck, there are some alternative investments that even include physical things attached to them...like wine! That's why I've got Atul Tiwari, CEO of Cult Wines Americas, back on the show to discuss all the ins and outs of investing in a portfolio of fine wine (and yes, you can actually drink the wine if you want too!). You may remember Atul from episode 170, when he was CEO of Vanguard Canada. Back then, he came on the show to share how he helped pioneer ETF investing in Canada and some of the benefits of index funds. Now, he's in a very different role, focused on educating and helping investors diversify their portfolios even more by investing in fine wine. Cult Wines originated in the U.K. in 2007, and Atul has taken on the task of bringing the company over to North America, making wine investing more accessible to Canadian investors. In this episode, Atul goes over everything from what's the return on investment with fine wines, how to build a strong portfolio, fee structure, as well as where the wine is physically stored. As someone who enjoys a glass of wine (but rarely spends more than $15 on a bottle), I wanted to know what constitutes a fine wine, and are there wines that are bought without the intention of drinking it? If you're keen to find out the answers and more about fine wine investing, then you'll love this episode! For full episode show notes visit: https://jessicamoorhouse.com/316

in 6 months, AUM of Bordeaux went from 40%->36% and Italy 6%->13% and Bordeaux prices went down 2-3% and Italy up 12%Assets Under Management (AUM) - $275MUK/Europe is the biggestAsia nextAmericas (smallest, but newest)FeesAnnual management fee - starts at 2.95%/year (with $10k investment), 2.75% (with $35k investment), 2.5% ($150k investment), 2.25% ($500k investment)Benefits - portfolio allocation, customization of the portfolio, investment platform access, customer support, storage & insurance, trading on the platform (no feeds on trading to align Cult Wines interests with clients)Higher tiers get more experiential benefits - access to producers, client-only events, educational activities, vineyard visitsWine Buying35% direct from winery/new vintages65% secondary market - from existing investors, trusted suppliers/brokers, and trading platforms (e.g., Liv-Ex)Wine Selling / Delivery~20% of wines have been delivered to people, can ship to 45 states, clients pay delivery feesSome clients use Cult wines as a global cellar - e.g., a Japanese collector sent wines to the US when he was going to be there to visitWine sales channelsCult Wines buys for other clients - for wines they believe will appreciate moreTrade team - sells to other wine merchants, brokers, traders, importersRetail/Direct to Consumer - listed on Wine-Searcher and Cult Wines website for saleTeam - ~100 people totalInfrastructure based in UK (including ~24 tech and product folks)Regional offices - relationship managers, portfolio manager (all CFA level; Tom Gearing is the CEO of Cult Wines, the global leader in fine wine investment. But I wanted to learn more about how Cult Wines is leveraging technology to disrupt the fine wine investment industry. Traditionally, fine wine investing was targeted to the "snooty" high-net-worth investor, but Tom uses technology to bring more accessibility, transparency, safety, and credibility to the industry. Tom grew up with an investment banker father who took him all over the vineyards of Europe as a boy, and he learned and sampled wine and is more knowledgeable about fine wine than people twice is his age. But his love for technology has been instrumental in making Cult Wines a leader in innovation. They released the first NFT in their industry for auction on OpenSea, and they are continuing to utilize blockchain and other technologies to set Cult Wines apart from its competitors. Tom shares his tech story and how he appeared on BBC's Apprentice a decade ago. He has also overseen the growth of the business, receiving several awards, including appearing on the Sunday Times Fast Track 100 in 2015 and 2017 and receiving a Queen's Award for International Trade. But here in 2021, he regularly appears as a market commentator on media outlets such as Bloomberg, CNBC Europe, CITYAM, and more.

Topics included: Atul's journey – from reformed lawyer and finance executive to managing liquid, wooden-barreled assets Separately Managed Wines – tailored solutions for different objectives The industry's original 800 pound gorilla and his point system – reverse-engineering for a single palate Specialization and diversity – the multiple voices currently driving wine culture The surprising existence of wine futures Vintage ranges, consumption windows, storage and handling Value vs growth dynamics, with no easily accessible beta – and some serious negative carry Insurance, free ports and bonded warehouses – geographic diversification and avoiding double taxation Bypassing auctions and buying only when authenticity can be verified Enriched by Jason's experience as a former restauranteur and Mike's passion for the subject, the conversation also touched on underappreciated vineyards, great documentaries, and tips for finding appropriately aged wine in restaurants. A special thanks to sommelier Amanda McCrossin (@SommVivant) for joining our live chat (and adding tons of pedigree to Jason's views). If there was ever an episode that you should consider pouring a glass for, this is it.   This is “ReSolve's Riffs” – live on YouTube every Friday afternoon to debate the most relevant investment topics of the day, hosted by Adam Butler, Mike Philbrick and Rodrigo Gordillo of ReSolve Global* and Richard Laterman of ReSolve Asset Management.   *ReSolve Global refers to ReSolve Asset Management SEZC (Cayman) which is registered with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission as a commodity trading advisor and commodity pool operator. Atul Tiwari, CEO, Cult Wines Canada joins us for a delightful and captivating conversation on the inner workings of the world of investable and collectable fine wine (for starters, think first-growth left-bank Bordeaux's), and of Cult Wines Canada's (his latest foundling) work to bring the world of investable fine wine to the Canadian market. Atul Tiwari is the former founding President of BMO ETFs and former CEO of Vanguard Canada, which grew to $30-billion in assets, before his departure at the end of 2018. Since his departure from from the top role at Vanguard Canada, Tiwari went on, in March 2021, to co-found Cult Wines Canada, the joint venture with Cult Wines UK, and its Global CEO, Tom Gearing, to bring the exciting opportunity of investing in investment grade fine wines, which represent roughly only 1% of the world's annual production, to Canadian investors. Cult Wines UK is the rapidly-growing and well known UK-based investable wine boutique investment firm with $300-million (650,000 bottles) in rare, investable wine assets, held on behalf of investors. We roll up our sleeves, and get into how this unique, and once walled-off, once very private dealing network for wines from the highly-vaunted wine growers has been brought to accessibility, by Cult Wines, for all investors seeking a way to take part in this lucrative market. If you've ever wondered exactly how the investment grade wine market works (or if it's all new to you), come hang out with us for a little while and have your blanks filled.Full Transcript: Coming soonWe'd love your comments. Vala välja! #40: Kuidas targalt veinidesse investeerida ja mitte keldrit kohe tühjaks juua?

Vala Välja

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 29, 2020 71:26

Neile küsimustele hakkabki Gloria Veinikelderi peremees joogisaate eetris vastama. Saatejuhtidena olid stuudios kõik kolm veinihuvilist: Liisa, Keiu ja Martin. Küsimuste ja ettepanekutega kirjutage meile aadressile vala@delfi.ee.
