Paul Barnett is involved in organizing almost every 'welcome' or 'thank you' event that is held for Jamaican diplomats starting or ending their tenure in Canada. His hospitality is steeped in the examples set by his parents who, on many occasions, had the founders of Ardenne High School, Reverend George and Nellie Olson, at their home as guests. As a child, he listened to their conversations and eventually became a very involved student at Ardenne High. He says the school gave him a second chance at life, literally. His love for the institution has fuelled his efforts to give back to his alma mater -- something he has been doing for 40 years. Paul Barnett, president of the Toronto Chapter of the Ardenne Alumni Association, the longest-serving president, tells Impacting Jamaica host Neil Armstrong about the importance of giving back or "paying it forward". He also discusses plans to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the alumni association. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Karen started her company in 1996 and has helped top business leaders and teams from Fortune 500 companies to manage change, increase productivity and achieve success. Featured in the media several times, she is a strategic advisor to startup “Animo” which aims to help employees understand and manage their well-being using Artificial Intelligence. Karen is a Master Certified Coach (MCC) and a past Board member and founder of the Toronto Chapter for the International Coaching Federation. Karen has an MBA in Marketing from the Ivey School and a bachelor's degree in Economics from Western University. Based on her personal and coaching experience, Karen says suffering from burnout most likely happens to “Accidental Alpha women” with the feeling of regular resentment as the first clue. Compared to the “non-accidental” Alpha women who know this is the kind of leadership they want from the get-go, the Accidental Alpha women feel disconnected with tension and frustration around them. Karen says in order for these women to thrive, the first step is to recognize their reality and accept that delegation and asking for help is part of leadership. She says women need to become comfortable with admitting that they are overwhelmed and asking for specific support. She emphasizes that self-leadership is the key to leading with more clarity. She also mentions the importance of planning for the worst scenarios while detaching from the outcome in order to transition into a more rewarding life and career. Any brand's effort to gain public trust and maintain its reputation is a never-ending cycle, and if the last year has taught us anything, its that communicators need to have a seat at the table. As we continue to navigate a global pandemic and ongoing social justice issues, marketers and communicators have risen to the challenge in an effort to adapt to the situation quickly, and help inform decisions to maintain public trust. In this episode of The Pivot, we chat with Russell Baker, president of IABC/Toronto. Part of his mandate is to modernize the Toronto Chapter – by placing an emphasis on data to help inform decisions. Tune in to hear the discussion on Russell's mission to modernize the profession, the IABC's DEI initiatives, and his key learnings on being a communicator during the pandemic.
With over 35 years of civil litigation, business, and dispute resolution experience, Rande Sotomayor takes a down-to-earth, common-sense approach to helping people solve problems and conflicts. Tenacious, intuitive, and with exceptional ability to perceive and manage the emotional component of any conflict, Rande’s approach delivers consistently excellent results. With significant trial, arbitration, and appellate experience, Rande has helped parties resolve hundreds of disputes, with specialties in the following subjects: Real Estate, Personal injury, Insurance, Employment, Business, and Contracts.Rande conducts MCLE programs on ADR, serves as a guest speaker for undergraduates and law students, and has taught and participated on panels for the U.S. District Court (C.D. Cal.) Mediator Panel, the Southern California Mediation Association, local bar and business associations, the Toronto Chapter of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and other professional groups.Rande has transitioned from litigation attorney to mediator to afford parties the opportunity to settle their legal disputes before spending precious resources on fighting it out in court. She has transformed from a desk-bound sedentary person to an athletic mountain hiker and then mountain trail runner (including ultra-marathons), and then to mountain trail racer, beginning at age 56. With training and practice, Rande has evolved into an optimistic peacemaker who can’t help but constantly search for ways to manage inevitable conflict. She purports that we should not be surprised when conflict arises; we should be prepared to accept that it’s normal, and learn how to manage it.Rande have been fortunate to participate as a professional mediator, judge, trainer, and team coach at the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Commercial Mediation Competition in Paris from 2016 – present. Students from 66 law and business schools from around the world compete as advocates in commercial mediation proceedings. 130 professional mediators from around the world serve as mediators and judges in what is best described as a tournament. This year (2020) she also have served as a judge at the virtual Asia-Pacific Commercial Mediation Competition, run in a similar format. She has volunteered for these events because it is incredibly rewarding to see how mediation of commercial disputes is becoming more widespread and a “normal” process in the minds of future leaders who will be responsible for managing conflict in more productive and less expensive ways than through litigation. Rande's current passion is urging the world to see “kindness” as a strong tool for overcoming conflict by improving the quality of our communication and uncovering opportunities to collaborate. This is the last in a series of conversations with members of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Greater Toronto Chapter. It was a pleasure to spend an hour with members Catherine Chalmers, Chryslyn Pais, Gail Black, and Linton Carter to hear their insights about what it means to be fundraising for international organizations in these challenging times. It was encouraging to hear how upbeat and positive these nonprofit leaders are, how they are adapting to their new reality, and how they are discovering new ways to interact with their community. AFP’s Toronto Chapter is recognized as a leader in promoting philanthropy and providing education, training and best practices for those in the profession. I was pleasantly surprised when members of AFP Toronto reached out to inquire how we might collaborate to create some meaningful for their community. After getting our ducks in a row over the last couple of weeks, we are all pleased to see our efforts are coming together. This collaboration has afforded us all some learning opportunities, an opportunity to bring a local community together despite social distancing, a chance to reach across international lines and to create value for fundraising professionals around the globe. As always, we are very grateful to OneCause for being our sponsor.

I am often surprised by the language that fundraising professionals use to describe their work; and, in the case of this group of Canadian healthcare fundraisers, their words were quite upbeat and encouraging. Even as they described themselves and their colleagues as being exhausted and challenged with the reality of Covid-19, they were also energized, enthusiastic and eager to press on despite the obstacles that they might be encountering. Our society is rapidly changing, and many real estate businesses are lagging behind. How can you take diversity into consideration when you hire and run your office or team? How are so many offices and teams failing to reflect the areas they live in? How can we build a successful, long-standing business that sets itself apart from competitors? In this episode, I talk with Richard Silver of Silver Burtnick & Associates for these key insights. I wanted a team that looked like the people of our city. -Richard Silver Takeaways + Tactics Change is essential and should be embraced. Diversity of agents with regards to race, religion, age, culture and language only stands to benefit your business. This is particularly true in multicultural societies. Use of new technologies is vital, from testing personalities to marketing homes. At the start of the show, we talked about Richard’s journey and how he got started. We also talked about the importance of embracing change, and the power of diverse teams in the success of businesses. We talked about how luxury can sometimes be defined according to how many properties someone has. We also talked about why every chance to meet potential clients should be seized. We also discussed: The necessity of networking Situational relevance and how it works Multicultural societies, spurred on by globalization and rapidly evolving technologies, require change in the traditional approach to luxury. As markets become more diverse, agents need to consider the importance of representative teams. Further, as technological advancements show no signs of slowing, it is imperative they are used to the agent’s benefit. Change is inevitable, but that should not be cause for concern. Rather, it should be hailed as an opportunity for further-reaching success. Guest Bio Leading the Torontoism.com Team at Sotheby's International Realty Canada, Richard is designated as an ABR, e-PRO and a Certified International Property Specialist (CIPS). A past Director-at-Large for the Canadian Real Estate Association, and Past-President of the Toronto Real Estate Board. With March being National Kidney Month, PKD Foundation of Canada Executive Director, Jeff Robertson, and volunteer Toronto Chapter Coordinator, Matan Volach joined Napoleon Hill Foundation Certified Instructor and Resiliency Expert Tom Cunningham (too tall) to discuss the Foundation and the work they do. The PKD Foundation of Canada is the only national organization solely dedicated to raising funds and awareness for polycystic kidney disease, or PKD. The mission of the Foundation is to promote programs of research, advocacy, education, support and awareness, in order to discover treatments and an eventual cure for this often devastating disease. Both Jeff and Matan have personal ties to this hereditary disease, which serves as their fuel in the fight to end PKD. Polycystic kidney disease (PKD for short) is a genetic disease that causes fluid filled cysts to attack the affected organ; predominantly the kidney. Approximately 1 in 500 – 1000 people are affected by PKD, and there is currently no cure. Until one is found, PKD will threaten the lives of every generation of every family affected. It equally affects men, women and children, regardless of age, race, geography or ethnic origin. Starting as a provincial organization back in 1994 with one Toronto Chapter, the PKD Foundation of Canada incorporated on a national level 6 years ago and now has local Chapters stretching as far west as Vancouver, British Columbia and as far east as Corner Brook Newfoundland. These Chapters serve as the voice and support for the local PKD community, and provide people with a way to stay connected with one another on their PKD journeys. http://endpkd.ca/
Lots of people are not welcome in Canada anymore. People can no longer count on finding refuge in Canada. It's like our country now has big signs on our borders saying Go Away. We don't want you here. rabble radio 158 is about the lives that undocumented migrants face, those who are incarcerated because they are undocumented, and also about people trying to help them make sense of it all and live their lives. No One is Illegal – On September 17, Victoria Fenner, rabble radio's executive producer, went down to the Immigration and Refugee Headquarters on Victoria Avenue in Toronto. In front of the building was an event to recognize the one-year anniversary of a significant day. On September 17, 2013, 191 immigration detainees held in the Central East Correctional Centre in Lindsay Ontario, began a non-cooperation protest. Since then, people across the country have joined the call to end immigration detention. Tings Chack is with the Toronto Chapter of No One Is Illegal, the organizers of the protest. Imagine what it would be like to always be looking over your shoulder and wondering who knows you're in the country without proper documentation. Your kids' teachers? Your employer? Are they going to turn you in? Our next guest knows a lot of people who live with that fear. Suzanne Narain is a Jane Finch community resident, a neighbourhood in Toronto where a lot of undocumented workers live. She spoke to John Bonner of the rabble.ca podcast John Bonner Audio Blog, about what life is like to live in fear of arrest, detention or deportation. If you're born in Canada, you're automatically a Canadian citizen, right? Well, maybe not. Deepan Budlakoti was born in Canada. He has been issued a passport by the federal government. Twice. The government of Ontario gave him an Ontario birth certificate. But … the federal government now says he's not a Canadian citizen and he needs to go home. Except India, which the government says is his home, says no. He's not an Indian citizen. He was born in Canada, so he's Canadian. Deepan is still in Canada but has been stripped of his Canadian citizenship. He is now stateless. He is under house arrest in his parent's home and can only go out between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. He doesn't have health insurance anymore. He's living in limbo. Earlier this month, he lost his appeal of the government's decision to revoke his citizenship. The case hinges on the question: Were his parents employees of India High Commission when he was born? Deepan and his lawyers say no. Dan Kellar of the rabble podcast AWOL spoke to Deepan Budlakoti a few days after he received the news of his lost appeal earlier this month. When one of our podcasters celebrates, so do we. This year is a milestone year for one of our longest-running podcasts. It's the 10th anniversary of the program “Living on Purpose.” It hasn't been on the rabble podcast network for all that time. Lynn Thompson's podcast began on the radio in Nanaimo in 2004 and migrated to the rabble podcast network in 2007. Happy anniversary, Living on Purpose!
