Friendly Rich Marsella sits down with his long lost American cousin, Brian Marsella for a deep chat about why we music! Brian fell in love with it at the early age of 3, growing up in Philadelphia and has not looked back. Performing alongside so many greats, including John Zorn, Cyro Baptista, Trevor Dunn and so many more, Brian Marsella has established himself as one of the great pianists and composers of our time. Don't miss his upcoming new 3-CD release, "Brian Marsella's Imaginarium - Medietas" which comes out this Fall. Let's gig deep into the imaginative musical mind of Brian Marsella!
Scott Amendola is as adventurous with his playing as he is with his exploration of live looping and electronic effects. From the freest side of improvisation to the deepest pocket, he's developed a mastery of eclecticism. And if the stellar list of musicians he's worked with is any indication—including Will Blades and Cyro Baptista on this outing, it's working.
Featuring music from Brazilian percussionist Cyro Baptista, the legendary trio Shakti feat. Shankar Mahadevan, Zakir Hussain & John McLaughlin, Cuba's Omara Portuondo + more!

his varied collaborations. Initially emerging as a sideman on Terence Blanchard's Bounce in 2003, Loueke quickly found himself in demand, appearing on a bevy of albums including bassist Charlie Haden's 2004 effort Land of the Sun as well as a pair of noteworthy 2007 releases, Kendrick Scott's The Source and Herbie Hancock's Grammy-winning River: The Joni Letters. His own albums, like 2006's Virgin Forest, 2010's Mwaliko, and 2015's Gaia, have showcased his expansive, globally minded aesthetic, marked by his emotive jazz solos and a deep understanding of African folk customs. Born in the French-speaking West African country of Benin in 1973, Loueke initially started out singing and playing percussion as a child. At age 17, he picked up the guitar after receiving lessons from his older brother. Along with West African musical traditions, he developed a love of jazz after discovering the music of George Benson. Upon graduating high school, he studied at both the Ivory Coast's National Institute of Arts and Paris' American School of More Than Music before immigrating to the United States, where he attended Boston's Berklee College of Music on scholarship. In 2001, he successfully auditioned for the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz at the University of California Los Angeles, and in the process caught the attention of judges Herbie Hancock, Terence Blanchard, and Wayne Shorter. In 2002, he joined Blanchard's band, recording with the trumpeter on 2003's Bounce and 2005's Flow. A series of similarly high-profile recordings followed, including appearances on Haden's Land of the Sun, Hancock's Possibilities, and drummer Scott's The Source. In 2007, he gained even further recognition after contributing to Hancock's River: The Joni Letters, which took home both Album of the Year and Best Contemporary Jazz Album prizes at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards. As a solo artist, Loueke debuted with 2005's In a Trance, followed a year later by Virgin Forest. Also during this period, he formed the trio Gilfema with fellow Berklee alumni bassist Massimo Biolcati and drummer Ferenc Nemeth. Together, they issued 2005's Gilfema and 2008's Gilfema + 2, the latter of which also featured clarinet players Anat Cohen and John Ellis. He also continued his fruitful studio work, contributing to albums by Angélique Kidjo, Norah Jones, Gretchen Parlato, Esperanza Spalding, and others. In 2008, Louekesigned with Blue Note for a series of well-received albums, including 2008's Karibu, 2010's Mwaliko, and 2012's Robert Glasper-produced Heritage. For his fourth Blue Note album, 2015's Gaïa, Loueke exclusively showcased his electric guitar skills, exploring an expansive blend of African rock and jazz alongside Gilfema bandmates Biolcati and Nemeth. The following year, he joined bassist Dave Holland, saxophonist Chris Potter, and drummer Eric Harland in the fusion group Aziza. He also jumped on board the Blue Note All-Stars' 2017 album, Our Point of View, and contributed to works by Chick Corea, Luboš Soukup, and Kristóf Bacsó. In 2018, he returned to his solo output with The Journey, which featured collaborations with Pino Palladino, Cyro Baptista, Etienne Charles, and others.★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Nels Cline joins us on this week’s podcast to discuss his new double-album on Blue Note, Share the Wealth. Share the Wealth finds Nels alongside the powerhouse lineup of Scott Amendola, Skerik, Trevor Dunn, Brian Marsella and Cyro Baptista. Inspired by the cut-up recording methods of Os Mutantes and influenced at least a bit by Miles Davis' electric period, it's one of his wildest projects to date. During our chat, we also talk gear (including the guitar that is closest to his heart while he’s quarantining during the pandemic, his pedal board and more), collaborator Julian Lage, forthcoming Wilco recordings and more. It’s a fun conversation with a Fretboard Journal favorite. "J.J. Guitarist and vocalist Fleurine has gained a devoted international following for what the Los Angeles Times describes as her “warm, enveloping sound and gentle rhythmic drive.” A Dutch native, she spent summers visiting her grandparents and great uncle in Portugal, becoming fluent in Portuguese and leading her first Brazilian cover band in her teens. She went on to become the first singer authorized to translate into English the lyrics of the legendary Chico Buarque, for her 2008 Sunnyside release “San Francisco.” Her lyrical adaptations of Thelonious Monk for her EmArcy/Universal debut album “Meant to Be!” featured contemporary jazz greats Tom Harrell and Christian McBride. Fleurine is also an established lyricist, contributing words for artists like Kenny Dorham, Curtis Fuller and Joshua Redman. Join us for this installment of “Leonard Lopate at Large” on WBAI when accordionist Vitor Gonçalves (best known for his collaborations with Anat Cohen and percussionist Cyro Baptista) and upright bassist Eduardo Belo join Fleurine, fresh from a pair of shows at Birdland, for a live performance in the WBAI studio.

For episode 186, the fabulously talented and all around good dude, Brian Marsella swings by for a wide-ranging conversation that covers a lot of ground, from dealing with death, to touring in the United States, growing up in Philadelphia and making music in the 21st century. A veteran of the bands of Cyro Baptista and John Zorn, Brian has recently released a series of powerful, smoking records and that highlight his skills as a piano player and a band leader. This is a good one.
