From this perspective, life is the training manual for us.  This moment….the “stuff” we're in, the feelings we're having, the current circumstances of our lives – that is the training manual.  Our task is to learn to take those raw materials, learn the signals we get from inside ourselves, decipher the signals from the outside, exploring the matrix so we can choose who we want to be and how we want to respond to this very moment we are in. --- Deirdre Fay, MSW is a thought leader with over 35 years of experience exploring the intersection of wisdom traditions and contemporary psychotherapy as a “Modern Day Bodhisattva (Compassion) Training.” In deliberately choosing to cultivate compassion healing is not an accident but the sure result of consistent and persistent practice as we develop an UnShakeable Heart, Solid, Steady, and Secure in the face of all life circumstances. Have you ever been triggered? A few years ago, this term used to be new to me. There were many instances where I was triggered and reacted inappropriately, because one of the ways that I managed my own trauma was not to trust anyone and to always push people away. If I felt threatened at all I would lash out. This almost cost me my job when I was a resident, because I didn't know how to interact with people. Thankfully I got to a place where I had the luxury to do some introspection, where a lot of women may not have that because a lot of us are still in survival mode even into midlife. This is why having a safety net relationship is important. During midlife, we often rethink our relationships. This phase also calls for the rediscovery of self. In today's episode of The Best of The Menopause Movement Podcast, we have Deirdre Fay, a licensed clinical social worker, who is the author of Attachment-Based Yoga and Meditation For Trauma Recovery. Tune in as we talk about valuable insights on how you can healthily deal with your triggers and get useful information on how to deal with self-discovery and relationships.   What's Discussed in This Episode: (05:18) Definition of triggers (06:57) Attachment theory (07:40) Seven fundamental attachment needs (09:53) Triggers as heavily-charged memories (12:05) What are attachment imprints? (13:23) What is representation? (14:21) Changing attachment imprints (17:45) Getting rid of triggers through spiritual practices (22:02) Attachment styles (26:41) Uses of meditation (29:39) Importance of self-compassion (31:08) How should you deal with negative thoughts? (34:14) How should you deal with repressed memories? (37:02) What is dissociation? (39:27) Recognizing triggers (42:14) Online course about living with triggers (46:53) The need for constant improvement   About the Guest: Deirdre Fay is a licensed clinical social worker and author of two books, while currently working on her third one. I remember not too long ago, I was at a conference and it said something that went home for me. It went along the lines of, “Are you going to let a four-year-old run your life?” This isn't parenting 101, but it can be. You see, we all learn something from our childhood experiences—including negative ones that led to traumas. The thing is, if we don't deal with them, we can be 30, 40, 50, 60 years old and full of wisdom, but still not know why we get triggered by what other people do or say to us. Have you ever been triggered? I thought about a couple of experiences I had when I was pretty early in my surgical career and had some not so pleasant interactions with colleagues who were questioning me. And because I came from a patriarchal home where my opinion never mattered, I was always really defensive when my colleagues would challenge me. At that time, I didn't see it as a challenge. I saw it as a conflict that reminded me of how people in my family interacted. So I would lash out and get triggered. “Are you going to be a four-year-old for the rest of your life?” the leader of that conference asked. I always say that change starts with awareness. And to be free from our subconscious programming, we need to be present so we can recognize the past that's coming in, name it, and put it together in a different way. My friend and colleague Deirdre Fay shares how we can do that in today's episode of The Best of The Menopause Movement podcast. Deirdre Fay works with people who have crummy histories to develop an inner platform for success to get their needs met for life. With decades of experience as a psychotherapist and educator, Deirdre brings together modern neurobiology and ancient wisdom into a practice in what she calls becoming safely embodied. During the podcast we talk about how to listen to yourself, what emotions really are PLUS:   Internal versus external signals Anxiety versus excitement and possibility Separating the past from the present What is shame? Sometimes, bad things happen. It’s not your fault when they do, but it’s easy to get caught in a loop of guilt, shame and self-blame. If you find yourself replaying a traumatic situation in your mind and asking yourself, “what if?” then today’s guest has a message you should hear. Deirdre Fay is trained as a therapist. She has more than 40 years of experience combining contemplative trauma treatment, attachment theory, psychology and ancient wisdom traditions into a practical approach to healing. You’re Not Too MuchThe first thing you should know is that you’re not too much. People with a history of trauma often struggle with feeling like they are. Trauma changes your brain. It makes everything from regulating your emotions to sleeping a challenge, and that’s hard to deal with.If people you know are telling you that you’re too much or that they wish you could go back to the way you were before, get new people in your life. You might be too much for them, but that’s not a reflection on you. There are billions of people in the world. Many people will love and appreciate you for who you are without requiring you to shrink in on yourself and become less. You just have to find them. If you have spent your life being told that you take up too much mental, physical or emotional space, it’s hard to relearn how to exist as yourself rather than someone’s idealized version of you. That’s part of why Deirdre’s dedication to helping her clients change the patterns they’re caught in is so essential. Living With an Unshakeable HeartDeirdre advocates for an approach to transforming trauma that she calls living with an unshakeable heart. In many traditional trauma treatment practices, experts recommend sitting with the pain of what you experienced. Some people find it healing, but others get stuck. Instead of moving forward and beginning to heal, they find themselves caught in a painful cycle. As Dr. Maya Angelou said, “you may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.”You’ve been through something traumatic, but it doesn’t have to subsume the rest of who you are. Instead, Deirdre believes in transforming trauma into an opportunity for growth and development. As you build resilience, you can be secure in the knowledge that you will flourish no matter what happens next. To learn more about Deirdre’s work and to access some of the phenomenal resources she offers, check out her website today.

I could start with listing Deirdre Fay’s accomplishments (which, believe me, are MANY)— but that would miss the most impactful element of my interaction with her.Deirdre is that magical and rare combination of kind, warm, smart, and powerful as hell. She’s the one with decades of experience working alongside some of the top leaders in mental health and yoga (uh, she is one of them), but when I was talking with her, she made ME feel important.Damn, y’all.Since having this converastion a couple weeks ago, her phrase “unshakeable core” has come up in many of my client sessions, and I know it (among others) will be a concept I return to again and again with my clients and with myself. About Deirdre FayDeirdre Fay, MSW has decades of experience exploring the intersection of trauma, attachment, yoga and meditation, and teaches “a radically positive approach to healing trauma.” Deirdre founded the Becoming Safely Embodied skills, the basis for the book Becoming Safely Embodied, a manual of the same name, and is the author of Attachment-Based Yoga & Meditation for Trauma Recovery and co-author of Attachment Disturbances for Adults, as well as the co-author of chapters in Neurobiological Treatments of Traumatic Dissociation. For links & additional resources, visit the full show notes at  http://gaiacenter.co/blog/bodyful-02

We're talking trauma, embodiment, attachment theory -- how we become separated from ourselves and others and how to reintegrate safely. Three years ago, I went to this workshop in a suburb outside of Chicago. And I already knew what the deal was going to be. I was going to be, probably, the only Black person there, or one of two, because that's just how it is my field. And it was true. As I was walking up the steps to go to this room, my body started to defend. And by that, I mean, my shoulders became tight. My hips became tight. I had my serious face on because I needed to prepare as usual. I walked into this room and, you know, everybody was kinda milling around and the presenter was at the front and she was talking to some people. And as I was getting ready to sit down, I looked up and she was in the front of the room and she smiled from her heart through her eyes with her energy. It couldn't have been more than a second. And my body began to relax because I knew that I was safe just by that transaction. And so this woman that I am speaking of is Deirdre Fay. Deirdre Fay, MSW has decades of experience exploring the intersection of trauma, attachment, yoga, and meditation. She teaches “a radically positive approach to healing trauma”. What she knows is grounded in her own healing as well as rigorous training as a psychotherapist looking for answers and ways to help others navigate the often-difficult terrain of healing trauma and attachment wounds. Deirdre knows what it’s like to make that journey. She did it dealing with her own history of trauma and as she searched for answers to relational and attachment issues. During the course of her life, she was lucky to have lived for six years in a spiritual community [Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health] which surrounded her with a nurturing environment. That experience grounded Deirdre in her commitment to finding ways to help other people. The Becoming Safely Embodied Skills were born during those years and came to fruition as she worked with trauma survivors in Boston both in her private practice and in hospital settings. She wanted to develop easy to apply take home skills that people could use when they weren’t in therapy. Resources https://dfay.com Want a cool Therapy Chat t-shirt, sticker or mug? Deirdre Fay MSW, LICSW invites us to trust the process of reinvention that occurs throughout life and is occuring now.  She encourages us to slow down and to differentiate between what is the past coming into the present through thoughts, feelings or sensations, and what is truly happening now.  In the book, Attachment Based Yoga and Meditation for Trauma Recovery, Deirdre draws connections between ancient yogic wisdom and contemporary attachment theory, integrated with decades of knowledge derived from her own and her clients' real lived experience.  With gentle hope, Deirdre suggests we may build a different story, and find more fulfillment and peace in our lives.  Deirdre teaches pactices that nurture the capacity to "rest in essence" as she writes on her website, and she can be found on instagram where she models the authenticity and courage that she teaches.  More information about Derdre, including her books, workshops, and trainings, can be found at dfay.com.

In this this interview, cross-posted from the podcast Psychologists Off The Clock, Deirdre Fay, LICSW discusses how she integrates yoga, meditation and attachment theory into healing trauma. Ms. Fay discusses the intersection between yoga philosophy and attachment theory. She explores why embodiment is important in the healing of trauma and how she cultivates a “nourishing opposite” when shame accompanies a traumatic response. Ms. Fay leads us through two experiential exercises, Modified Half Archer and Anjali Mudra, to demonstrate these concepts. Deirdre Fay, LICSW has decades of experience exploring the intersection of trauma, attachment, yoga and meditation. Having meditated since the 70's and lived in a yoga ashram for six years in the 80's and 90s Deirdre brings a unique perspective to being in the body. In the 90's Deirdre was asked to teach yoga and meditation to those on the dissociative unit at McLean Hospital. Having amassed skill sets in trauma treatment (as a supervisor under the guidance of Bessel van der Kolk at the Trauma Center), attachment theory (13 years of training with Daniel Brown), body therapy (as a trainer in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy) Deirdre now teaches an integrative approach which Chris Germer calls “a radically positive approach to healing trauma.” Deirdre founded the Becoming Safely Embodied skills groups and is the author of Attachment-Based Yoga & Meditation for Trauma Recovery (W.W. Norton, 2017) (W.W. Norton, 2017), Becoming Safely Embodied Skills Manual (2007), and co-author of Attachment Disturbances for Adults (2016) as well as the co-author of chapters in Neurobiological Attachment-Based Yoga & Meditation for Trauma Recovery Treatments of Traumatic Dissociation. A former supervisor at The Trauma Center, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute trainer from 2000–2008, certified in Internal Family Therapy, qualified trainer in Mindful Self-Compassion, Self-Awakening Yoga and LifeForce Yoga practitioner Deirdre is a respected international teacher and mentor for working safely with the body. Welcome to episode 145 of the Therapy Chat Podcast with host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C. This week Laura re-visits her interview with Deirdre Fay, MSW, LICSW, who integrates trauma and attachment theory with yoga and meditation in embodiment. She is also the founder of the Becoming Safely Embodied Skills and maintains a private practice in Arlington, MA. The work she does arises out of her life. Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week I'm bringing you an episode which was recorded a few months ago as the third part of my series of somatic witnessing along my grief journey with Linda Thai. If you missed the first two episodes, they're linked in the show notes. I had an unexpected loss of a family member early this year. The context is that I've been dealing with anticipatory grief related to my own parents' health issues, which has opened the opportunity to explore deep healing of the attachment wounds I've carried throughout my life. Within this, the traumatic grief that arose with the most recent loss allowed another layer to come to light. Linda Thai and I agreed to do a series of episodes in which she guided somatic work and I was the participant. It's a demonstration of how somatic work can look and feel. In this third episode of that series, we worked with the back body and the “yield” aspect of the developmental/attachment cycle. Listening may provide one level of experience, and watching on video will likely land differently for you. The video will be posted on the Therapy Chat YouTube channel as well, which you can find here: https://www.youtube.com/@TherapyChatPodcast. I invite you to check in with yourself as you listen or watch our interaction here and pause as needed to attend to any attachment or trauma reactions you might notice within your conscious awareness. Follow all of the amazing work Linda Thai is doing via her website: https://linda-thai.com We are accepting new clients in my therapy practice (for those located in Maryland). Welcome back to Therapy Chat! We've all heard the term "self regulation," and many of us are familiar with the concept of "co-regulation," but what is it, really? How do we do it? How do we know when we are in a ventral vagal nervous system state? If you heard my conversation with Dr. Stephen Porges a couple of weeks ago you may be curious what this would feel like and look like, for yourself and for therapy. Today's guest, Alyce Wellons, LCSW, has studied mind/body practices and used them in therapy for years. In our conversation you'll hear Alyce speak about the importance of connection and community for nervous system regulation and co-regulation. She will demonstrate (using me as the example) how easily we can bring ourselves into a ventral vagal state using somatic practices and mindfulness, and why she uses these practices in her work with clients who are in recovery and healing from trauma. The Institute for Creative Mindfulness is the brainchild of my friend Dr. Jamie+ Marich, an EMDR Certified Consultant & Trainer. Though the newest war that is happening now is what many are focused on, I hope this week's discussion will remind listeners that we can always extend kindness, love, hope and healing outward, and the ripple effects can make a difference. We can also choose to spread hate and fear, but that is not good for our physical or mental health, nor for humanity overall. Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week I'm honored to bring you another interview on the subject of religious trauma. My guest today is Dr. Mark G. Karris, a Marriage and Family Therapist in California who is the author of four books, including most recently, "The Diabolical Trinity: Healing Religious Trauma from a Wrathful God, Tormenting Hell, and a Sinful Self." He describes why he wrote this book, and how religious beliefs with these three components can be traumatic. This conversation is not about bashing religion, though. Mark explains how these beliefs are different from the healthy aspects of religion and the ways it can be beneficial. Tune in for this thought provoking conversation!Learn more about Mark's work and find his book at: https://markgregorykarris.com/Check out Mark's YouTube Channel at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgcz2Pq4FMpItOWs3wylTCgWe are accepting new clients in my therapy practice (for those located in Maryland). Welcome back to Therapy Chat! We all know people who'll do anything for others but never accept help for themselves. In fact, they never admit needing any help, despite being very attuned to how everyone around them is doing. These relationships feel out of balance, and limit both partners' ability to show up authentically. This is true in intimate partner relationships, friendships, work relationships and family relationships. This week host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C interviews Michelle Farris, LMFT about codependent relational dynamics. Michelle describes the dynamics of codependency within relationships, talks about how these patterns develop and how people who lose themselves within relationships can build a stronger sense of self.Michelle Farris is a licensed psychotherapist and anger management specialist. She helps others build healthy relationships without sacrificing themselves while using her own recovery to provide hope for creating a happier life. She has written three e-books and has created several online courses to support private learning. Her articles have been featured in several online publications including Psych Central, Bustle, Your Tango, The Good Men Project and The Daily Positive. In her private practice Michelle found her sweet spot in teaching relationship skills that are easy to implement quickly. Learn more about Michelle at: https://www.counselingrecovery.com/We are accepting new clients in my therapy practice (for those located in Maryland).
