Mind Chatter -  Does your brain start chattering and seemingly never stop? Do you feel distracted and unable to focus, like your brain just won't shut up and it can be so noisy up there it's overwhelming? I'm right there with you, my friend. The constant mind chatter that analyzes every single thing about you and your life, your circumstances, your fears, and all of your shortcomings. Reflecting on your problems and noodling over solutions is one of the best ways to move forward in life even if it's not the most pleasant way to spend your time. But sometimes all that mind chatter in our heads gets mean. We beat ourselves up for the slightest things, talk ourselves out of doing things we should actually do, or get stuck in a loop of worry or shame. We have brains that have a life of their own, and they have all kinds of thoughts and ideas they want to share with us all day every day. And there's no question it can be overwhelming. It's like background noise that never ceases, from the moment you wake up to the moment you lay down to go to sleep. It can even prevent you from falling asleep. In today's conversation, we are joined by Mitchell Greene, a licensed clinical and sport psychologist, and owner of Greenepsych Clinical & Sport Psychology, a boutique private practice located in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Dr. Greene works primarily with athletes pursuing high performance goals, or coaches and athletic departments looking to educate their student-athletes on mental health and/or performance enhancement strategies.Mitchell joined us today to talk about his book, ‘Courage over Confidence: Managing Mind Chatter and Winning the Mental Game.'Mind chatter is when we have conversations with ourselves that are full of doubt, second-guessing, and negative thinking. It typically shows up when the uncertainty and the stakes feel enormous. For athletes, it can occur in a big tournament. The first step in recovering from mind chatter is to expect it to show up. Understanding the context in which it shows up is important because that means you're aware it's completely normal and you can control it.Get ready to explore the concept of "chatter" and how to handle it, as Mitchell shares insights from their book and provides practical tips for athletes, coaches, and anyone facing high-stakes situations. [05.40] Mind chatter – Mind chatter is the negative, doubtful thinking or conversations we have with ourselves. [13.14] Fear - Fear may have been the way you presented yourself to the world when you were a child, but it doesn't have to define who you are now.[20.02] Falling behind – Mitchell explains why the obsession with doing everything for the fear of falling behind is unhealthy. [25.22] Social media – The impact social media has on athletes, in Mitchell's opinion. [34.33] Thoughts – We are constantly having positive and negative thoughts about us. I'm delighted to speak to licensed clinical and sport psychologist, Dr Mitch Greene in this week's episode. Mitch is Adjunct Instructor in Temple University's College of Public Health. He completed his PhD in clinical psychology and worked in family therapy before moving into sport psychology. He is now the sport psychology consultant to several athletic departments, endurance coaches and national race series.  Mitch has written a fantastic book from his time both as a sport psychologist and an athlete himself entitled “Courage over Confidence: Managing Mind Chatter and Winning the Mental Game”. In the book, Mitch explodes one of the field's most common and malicious myths - that confidence is a prerequisite for athletic success. Stating that the evidence shows that most athletes find it nearly impossible to sustain positive thinking when their minds are riddled with mind chatter - that unwelcome, doom and gloom self-conversation that crops up in high-stakes competitions. Chatter-filled athletes will excel in practice but struggle to perform on game day and they will fear the stakes of losing despite having trained to compete at their best. The clear instructions in Courage over Confidence provide guidance for managing mind chatter and a method for “joining forces” with that negative voice rather than battling it. With courage over confidence, good players can learn to become great competitors.
