Alexa, play “Taps.” The body count in the second half of the Revenge Arc might not be as high as the Umbara Arc. But as Mandalore descends into civil war and political leaders become cannon fodder, it feels like this is just the start of something bigger. In our recap of The Clone Wars 5.15–16, “Shades of Reason” and “The Lawless,” we dissect both spectacular darksaber duels blow-by-blow. We talk about Duchess Satine's isolation as she tries to live out her ideal of pacifism. (Also, how it's a direct contrast to Bo-Katan's warlike alliances.) We even talk about all the Mandalorian artwork we see — moar Cubism! — and how it's a form of propaganda that helps keep Mandalorian society together. Next week, we start the final arc of Season 5: the Jedi Temple Bombing arc, part one (5.17–18, “Sabotage” and “The Jedi Who Knew Too Much”). --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/growingupskywalker/message

Hyperspace Theories returns with another discussion of Season Two of The Mandalorian. In this episode, Tricia Barr and B.J. Priester analyze how The Mandalorian series advances the story of the Mandalorians: a people, a culture, and a feared faction in galactic war and peace. We also speculate about how the information revealed in Season Two may provide clues to what else we'll learn about Mandalorians in The Book of Boba Fett at the end of the year and Season Three of The Mandalorian later in 2022. Before looking to future stories, though, we start with how the Mandalorians were introduced in the franchise's past. Revealed in fiction and nonfiction paratexts, the lore surrounding Boba Fett's armor and its mysterious connection to the equally mysterious Mandalorian super-commandos predates even the conclusion of the Original Trilogy in Return of the Jedi. In the era of Star Wars Expanded Universe (now Legends) tales, the Mandalorians appeared in a wide variety of popular story formats, including novels, comics, and videogames, as well as fan cosplay groups. A major shift occurred in the second season of The Clone Wars animated series, when George Lucas began to unfold his own version of Mandalorian culture, politics, and role in the galaxy. Dave Filoni subsequently evolved those ideas further in the Star Wars Rebels animated series and the Siege of Mandalore arc of The Clone Wars‘ seventh season, as well as the ongoing The Mandalorian series. What these stories portray, over roughly thirty years of in-universe events, is the Mandalorians collectively undergoing a story of their own. Like the Jedi, the Mandalorians face tragedy by the end of the Clone Wars, and then a slow attempt to rebuild. As with the Jedi, we watch the story unfold through the eyes of key characters like Duchess Satine, Bo-Katan Kryze, Pre Vizsla, and later Sabine Wren, Din Djarin, and Moff Gideon. In the Disney+ series, perhaps the Mandalorians may have a more optimistic fate ahead. Trapped on the surface, Jedi Master Di rallies the local forces with the help of Cham Syndulla. Desperate to save them, the Jedi Council dispatches Senator Bail Organa and Representative Jar Jar Binks to the planet Toydaria, where they are to convince the neutral regent, King Katuunko, to send aid to Ryloth. Bail and Jar Jar must convince Toydaria that their cause is just -- before it's too late. Trade Federation envoy Lott Dod attempts to prevent the Toydarians from giving up their neutrality. Katuunko follows his conscience and secretly aids the Republic, which Jar Jar is able to keep secret from the snooping Trade Federation agents with his inimitable distractions.S3E4 - Sphere of InfluenceChi Eekway and Che Amanwe, Chairman Papanoida's daughters, are kidnapped and held for ransom. Ahsoka Tano teams up with the Senator from Pantora, Riyo Chuchi, to aid the new chairman in recovering his family before the Trade Federation can unduly influence the future of his planet. The Chairman and his son, Ion, track down the kidnapper -- Greedo -- on Tatooine, and rescue Che Amanwe. Meanwhile, Ahsoka and Chuchi find Chi Eekway held captive aboard a blockading Trade Federation battleship over Pantora, and expose Trade Federation officer Sib Canay as a Separatist conspirator.S3E5 - CorruptionPadmé, on a diplomatic mission to Mandalore, guarantees the pacifist planet the Republic's full protection, but she and Duchess Satine soon find something sinister lurking beneath the planet's serene facade. Moogan smugglers have been sneaking in supplies, including bottled tea destined for the Mandalorian schools. To increase their profits, they have been diluting the tea with a hazardous chemical.S3E6 - The AcademyAhsoka is assigned to teach a class at a leadership academy on Mandalore. Soon after she arrives, Duchess Satine's zealous nephew -- Korkie -- and his classmates uncover a nefarious plot. Prime Minister Almec is revealed to be an active part of the black market conspiracy on Mandalore, and he attempts to permanently silence Duchess Satine and the cadets before they expose his corruption. With Maul and Mandalore being the focus of the final story arc of the Clone Wars, we're taking some time to look back at how Maul came to power. Today, that means we're doing a Clone Wars Briefing on "Shades of Reason," episode 15 from season 5 of the Clone Wars and the second of a three-part story arc. In the first episode, Maul and Savage Opress were rescued by Death Watch, and proceeded to use their surprise Mandalorian saviors to strong-arm the Pykes, Black Sun, and the Hutts to help them. Now, with an army and ample supplies, they hatch the plot - make it look like criminals are overrunning the now-peaceful Mandalore, and then have Death Watch arrive to "save the day." Well, the Duchess Satine sees right through this, accusing Pre Vizsla immediately upon his arrival of being behind the criminal attacks. For all the good it did her. We'll talk about all of that, plus the race to see who can double-cross whom first, and how it all shakes out. Punch it! ***I'm listener supported! Season 7, episode 10 of the Clone Wars, "The Phantom Apprentice," has seen the capture of Maul and the end of his reign on Mandalore - or has it? Well, while we wait for episode 11 to see how that shakes out, we're going back in time to look at just how Maul came to power. The last time we saw him, he and Savage Opress were much the worse for wear - the events of "Revival" (episode 1 from season 5) had him without a leg, Savage without an arm, and floating adrift in space. Well, they didn't show up again in the series until episode 14, "Eminence." Lucky for them, too, as they were on the edge of death when the Mandalorian Pre Viszla and members of Death Watch stumbled upon them. And it seemed lucky for Death Watch as well. They made a deal with Maul and Savage, to overthrow the Duchess Satine and destroy Obi-Wan Kenobi in the process. Well, if there's one thing we know about making deals with Sith lords, it's that the deals get worse all the time. And we'll talk about that, as well as the beginnings of Maul's "Shadow Collective" crime syndicate, as we discuss "Eminence," which is the first of a three-part story arc. Punch it! ***I'm listener supported! Join the community at http://Patreon.com/sw7x7 to get access to bonus episodes and other insider rewards.***

"The Rise of Clovis" is episode 6 from season 6 of the Clone Wars, and (according to Wookieepedia), was once part of a larger story arc that included "A Friend in Need," which ultimately was split off and became episode 14 from season 4 of the show. Which fits it into the four-episode story arc structure business about which we've talked previously on the show... So Palpatine is at his manipulative worst in this episode, and I mean that in a good way (from a storytelling standpoint). He positions Padme to continue working with Clovis, and he HAS to be able to tell how mad that makes Anakin. Certainly Yoda picks up on it, and Clovis does, too. Yoda even shares his concerns with Obi-Wan, who comes to talk to his Padawan about clouded judgment, about romantic attachments, and even about Obi-Wan's feelings for the Duchess Satine of Mandalore. We'll talk about all of this on the show today, as well as how "The Rise of Clovis" got me thinking about "The Rise of Skywalker," and what that title actually means...
