An interview about Pan-Pacific solidarity with Jonathan Osorio and Tammy Tabe, two organizers of the 2024 Protecting Oceania conference. During the Festival of Pacific Arts and Culture held on Oʻahu in 2024, Protecting Oceania brought together Pasifika philosophers and grassroots organizers to forge new alliances, formations, strategies, and tactics rooted in their own worldviews, to determine how best to address those issues causing the most harm to Pacific peoples. Their hope is that the Protecting Oceania convening is only the beginning of setting a new agenda of collective self-determination for the Pacific in the 21st century. Tags: Hawaiʻi, Hawai'i, Hawaii

Some of you may recall episode 121 where I spoke with Dr. John Mitchell, president and CEO of IPC about his new book “fire your hiring habits”. During that episode, we talked about best practices for hiring the best people. I'd like to travel a little bit up the river to talk about where potential candidates for hiring come from. While most of the people we interview for positions within our companies come from other companies, more and more, we are seeing new people enter our industry. We've talked a lot about the “silver tsunami” affecting our industry. The fact is, baby boomers are entering retirement in greater numbers. From now until 2030, 10,000 Baby Boomers each day will hit retirement age. Millions will begin to officially retire. This is creating a terrific opportunity for young college graduates to enter our industry. Several years ago, I was a speaker at the SMTA, Pan Pacific strategic Electronics symposium in Hawaii. I shared my breakfast table with a longtime colleague, Dr. Ron Lasky, a professor at Dartmouth College. Over the course of breakfast, he asked me how I got into this industry and, more specifically, how I started my company. Dr. Lasky is an engineering professor at Dartmouth's Thayre school of engineering. He also teaches entrepreneurship to his soon to be engineers. Doctor lasky invited me to come to Dartmouth and speak to his students. I was more than happy to take him up on his offer, and I have spoken to his students on the subject of entrepreneurship every year for the past several years.I have been impressed by the emphasis on entrepreneurship within the Thayre school of engineering. We live in a time of marvelous evolution within the Electronics space. So many new and innovative electronic products are being introduced, fueled by IOT (Internet of things), the electrification of automobiles, advances in communication, and so much more.Education is the bedrock of our industry. It is the foundation for which much of our industry and the products we make are built upon. I've had Dr. Lasky on my show several times, and I thought it would be a great idea to invite his boss, the dean of Dartmouth's Thayre school of engineering onto the program.Dr. Alexis Abramson is the 13th dean of Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth. Prior to joining Dartmouth, she was the Milton and Tamar Maltz Professor of Energy Innovation at Case Western Reserve University and served as a director of the university's Great Lakes Energy Institute focused on creating sustainable energy technology solutions. During the Obama administration, Dr. Abramson served as chief scientist and manager of the Emerging Technologies Division at the US Department of Energy's Building Technologies Program. In 2018, she served as technical adviser for Breakthrough Energy Ventures, a $1 billion effort launched by Bill Gates to combat human-driven climate change. Abramson's research has focused on novel techniques for thermal characterization of nanostructures, the design and synthesis of unique nanomaterials for use in alternative energy applications, virtual energy audits for building energy efficiency, and strategies to accelerate technology commercialization at universities and research institutions.Dr. Abramson earned a BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering from Tufts University and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley.https://engineering.dartmouth.edu

Can you imagine a world where there's only synthetic wine? And what is synthetic wine anyway? How does removing alcohol impact the tasting experience? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Steven Laine, award-winning restaurateur, hotelier, and author. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks Highlights Can you imagine a world where there's only synthetic wine? What can you expect from Steven's upcoming books, Jupiter's Blood and The Somm? How did Steven end up working at two fantastic wineries during the pandemic? Which surprising insights did Steven learn from working the harvest? Why is a vineyard the ideal setting for enjoying a glass of wine? What is it about Torres Natureo Syrah that makes it a great non-alcoholic option? How does removing alcohol impact the tasting profile of wine? What makes English sparkling wine a great alternative to Champagne? Why should you add Quails' Gate Estate Winery Dry Riesling to your “wines to try” list? Which unpopular wine belief does Steven hold? Which wine would Steven pair with his childhood favourite, lasagna? What are some of Steven's favourite wine books? Which writers would Steven like to share a bottle of wine with? Why has travelling been a boon to Steven's writing? What wine message would Steven put on a billboard? Which wine would Steven want to be served at his funeral, and why? Why does Steven believe it's important to drink what you enjoy drinking? What's on the horizon for Steven's writing? Key Takeaways I enjoyed more nightmare scenarios from Steven this week. I can't imagine a world where there's only synthetic wine. Wine is both art and science, but it's also natural and an extension of the earth. His insights into how removing alcohol impacts the tasting experience were interesting. I have to agree, given the sheer labour intensity of producing wine, much of it is underpriced. He developed his passion for wine as a Sommelier and Beverage Director in London, England. Since then, he has visited hundreds of wineries around the world. Can you imagine a world without wine? How did an author create a new genre of wine thriller based on a winemaker's worst nightmare? What if the root louse phylloxera that destroyed most of the European vineyards in the 1850s returned but was even more destructive? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Steven Laine, award-winning restaurateur, hotelier, and author. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks Highlights What about the experience of travelling that motivated Steven to live in nine different countries? How did Steven become involved in the wine industry? Where did Steven's inspiration to write thrillers come from? How did the root louse Grape phylloxera impact European vineyards in the 1800s? Which surprising facts did Steven learn about phylloxera while researching Root Cause? What's the best moment of Steven's writing career so far? Do beta readers play a role in Steven's writing process? What can you expect from Steven's book Root Cause? Who are Steven's favourite mystery writers? Why are stuck fermentations a winemaker's worst nightmare? Why does Steven love to read widely? What was the inspiration for Steven's second book, Dragon Vine? Key Takeaways The premise of Steven's novel, can you imagine a world without wine, hooked me from the beginning. I can't imagine erasing all those great times I've shared with friends and family over a glass or two, let alone not doing the work I love in this field. I love how he takes a winemaker's worst nightmare and up the ante by having the root louse phylloxera come back as even more destructive. This doesn't seem to be an impossibility with today's climate change as well as the mutation of viruses that spread around the world quickly. I enjoyed Steven's insights into how travel changed his perspective. I think each trip, each location brings out a different piece of us. SMTA is well known for producing high-quality relevant technical conferences and symposiums. This includes, among others, the technical conference held at SMTAI, the High Reliability Cleaning and Coating Conference, the Symposium on Counterfeit Parts and Materials, the Advanced Electronics Assembly Conference, the Wafer-Level Packaging Symposium, the Electronics in Harsh Environments conference, and the Pan Pacific Microelectronics Symposium, often referred to as Pan Pac. Pan Pac is unique in many ways, beginning with its venue. Pan Pac is held annually at one of the Hawaian islands. This fact alone makes this symposium stand out. But there are many other factors that make this symposium unique. As Pan Pac's steering committee says: "The Pan Pacific Microelectronics Symposium strives to build bridges and nurture relationships across all boundaries, oceans and cultures, industries and technologies, companies and individuals. Its location in Hawaii always provides the requisite isolation from day-to-day distractions necessary to support these goals and enhance personal face to face interactions. The Pan Pacific continues its mission of building the vision and future directions for the electronics industry!" Pan Pac 2023 is scheduled for January 30 - February 2, 2023, at the Sheraton Kauai Resort on the island of Kauai. To talk more about the upcoming Pan Pacific Symposium, Mike Konrad invited two colleagues who are instrumental in curating the technical contact for this symposium. Dr. Chuck Bauer, one of the creators of this symposium, and Keith Bryant join him to discuss the conferences technical tracks and presentations as well as their view on what makes this conference unique.
Welcome back to another episode of the reliability matters podcast. For those who are counting, this is episode number 108. SMTA is well known for producing high-quality relevant technical conferences and symposiums. This includes, among others, the technical conference held at SMTAI, the High reliability cleaning and coating conference, the symposium on counterfeit parts and materials, the Advanced Electronics Assembly Conference, the Wafer-Level Packaging Symposium, the Electronics in harsh environments conference, and, perhaps my favorite, the Pan Pacific microelectronics symposium, often referred to as PanPac.PanPac is unique in many ways beginning with its venue. PanPac is held annually at one of the Hawaiian islands. This fact alone makes this symposium stand out. But there are many other factors that make this symposium unique. Let me quote from PanPac's steering committee:The Pan Pacific Microelectronics Symposium strives to build bridges and nurture relationships across all boundaries; oceans and cultures, industries and technologies, companies and individuals. Its location in Hawaii always provides the requisite isolation from day to day distractions necessary to support these goals and enhance personal face to face interactions. The Pan Pacific continues its mission of building the vision and future directions for the electronics industry! PanPac 2023 is scheduled for January 30 - February 2, 2023At the Sheraton Kauai Resort on the beautiful island of Kauai. While I love attending technical conferences and symposiums just for the educational opportunity, PanPac there's just something special about this conference. While all conferences provide an element of networking, I have forged many new relationships, friendships, and collaborative agreements with fellow attendees and speakers. Perhaps it has something to do with being on a tropical island for a few days with like-minded people. To talk more about the upcoming Pan Pacific microelectronics symposium, I invited to colleagues who are instrumental in curating the technical contact for this symposium. Dr. Chuck Bauer, one of the original creators of this symposium and Keith Bryant join me to discuss the conferences technical tracks andpresentations as well as their view on what makes this conference unique.More Information:https://smta.org/mpage/panpac/

Today's guest is Lachlan Reid. He has been commentating on cricket, basketball and Aussie Rules football and some of them were even recorded and I think he still has a few on tape somewhere. Lachy's media career began in 1995 in radio when he took a leap of faith and moved across Australia to Perth to study Broadcasting at Edith Cowan University. Since then, he has completed over 20 years at Channel Ten in Perth as Senior AFL Football Reporter and Presenter and he has won several awards for best news and feature stories. In February 2014, he was only a handful of Australian presenters to be chosen to commentate on the Winter Olympics in Sochi and he has also called the swimming in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacific games.

Episode Highlights [03:04] Damien's Experiences before Joining the Special Forces Damien shares he used to bodybuild when he was around 19 years old, and he was a Pan Pacific champion. Then, he joined the army in New Zealand. In 2000, he was sent to East Timor for a mission. His experience in the military taught him to be less selfish. It made him see how people grow up and learn the realities of developing countries. Damien recounts his time in East Timor in the full episode. [09:17] How to Cope with Trauma Seeing terrible situations during his mission taught Damien to compartmentalise. Talking to others can help you avoid bottling up feelings. You can start with one friend or your partner first, then your teammates. Sleep is also important. It's where we can disconnect our emotions from traumatic events. Get the basics right. Have good food, exercise, sleep and connect with others. [12:34] How Damien Joined the Special Forces After his time in East Timor, Damien left the military and went into exercise rehabilitation. After one and a half years, he went back to the military. By 2005, he helped form a counterterrorism team as a standalone squadron. Selection for Special Forces is different since the job is different. Damien observes that one criterion is people's response and management of physical and mental pain. [17:05] The Mindset to Help You Keep Going Damien shares that the Special Forces' tenets are hard-wired into them and help them keep doing their work. The first tenet is the unrelenting pursuit of excellence. Always be better than your best. Next, have the discipline to learn and teach. [18:45] Keep Learning and Evolving He shares that the Special Forces constantly evolves and now supports people to rest and not go hard all the time. In fact, a regiment in Australia has sleeping pods in their camp. He also shares that his team is able to relax before missions. Be able to switch on and off before difficult and serious situations. Damien recommends working and training smarter, not harder. This includes exercise selection and performance. Keep up with the times and stay humble. Be willing to learn from others, even when they're younger than you. [23:21] How to Cope with Changes and Transitions In professional sports, athletes face the problem of transitioning out of their careers. These athletes tend to be stuck in a bubble that can burst if they get injured and can't play anymore. Damien shares that this can be similar to those from the military. Once they come back, they often feel like fish out of the water. Therefore, having a team of people to support you through changes is important. [29:12] How to Manage Your Thoughts and Actions Remember that people react to situations differently. For example, if you're prone to be addicted to dopamine, you may find it harder to be satisfied. Understand your genes better so you won't beat yourself up for things that don't suit you in the first place. Remember that your biology will create your thoughts. If your body lacks certain chemicals, you will naturally want to fill the void. If you want to change your thinking, start with self-awareness and reflection. [34:01] How Damien Started Ketones Damien is now with the fire brigade in Australia and coaches clients on sleep and nutrition. Six years after he left the Special Forces, Damien shares he was depressed and anxious. This led him to learn about ketones in 2015. [35:42] How Ketones Can Help Us Ketones are a fuel source. In the keto diet, people are aiming to get into a state of ketosis to use ketones to fuel the brain. It can also help cancer patients, sports performance, depression and mood stabilisation. A 2019 study shows that ketones can reduce anxiety by 40%. When you're on a keto diet or in a fasting state, the ketones can change glutamate into GABA. Glutamate is a chemical that can make us excited or anxious. Ketones can also inhibit seizures. [39:51] Damien Shares Real Ketones Real Ketones carry two products. One is a human identical ketone, which is DBHB. The other is an LDBHB mix, which is more effective for anxiety, weight loss, and brain performance. It's found that the latter mix has a 59.9% drop in anxiety, 159% more fat loss and 10% greater brain processing speed. [42:18] Why Exogenous Ketones? Regardless of your diet, exogenous ketones can significantly raise your ketone levels. Remember, ketone drinks were invented for the Navy Seals because it's more convenient than depending on a keto diet. Exogenous ketones can also help fat-adapted athletes lose weight and those who are prone to inflammation. [52:09] The Importance of Sleep Sleep can help you manage stress better. This is the first thing you need to work on. After that, you can layer on better food, ketones, exercise and other strategies. Poor sleep for one year can easily lead to being 7 kilos overweight. It can also increase neurodegeneration, diabetes risk, cancer risk and more. Due to his schedule as a firefighter, Damien shares how he would do Tabata exercises to stay awake. This is 4 minutes of exercise with cycles of 20 seconds of exercise and 10 seconds of rest. He would also get light exposure and drink caffeine in the morning, as well as take theanine and ketones. To make up for his lack of sleep, Damien would take magnesium, theanine, tryptophan and GABA. 7 Powerful Quotes 'Sleep is where we disconnect emotions from traumatic events. As if you if you've been up all night, not able to sleep, of course, you're gonna feel the same the next day. 'Getting good food, getting good sleep, bit of exercise, and having connection with somebody in some way is going to help you out.' 'You're just trying to do your best and then be better than that. Yeah, not just trying to hit a standard—trying to be better than that.' 'Driven people, they can achieve anything. And then they're asking themselves to do it by themselves. And that's where they fall over.' 'Connection is the cure...Build a team before you go. And the team just could be your wife. That's your team. At no point in the military and no point in the org base did you ever do anything by yourself.' 'I'm being self aware, being able to self reflect, and then apply something and if I can't do it, I'll ask someone that can help me identify it or help me throw it off, or get their advice, and then analyze that and then apply it to myself.' 'Your three year old: would you would you let them get by six hours sleep? If you possibly think on that, you think that's insane? Don't do it to yourself because we are the same as the three year old.' About Damien Damien Porter has over 28 years of experience in the health and wellness industry. He is a career firefighter, champion national bodybuilder, exercise rehabilitation physiologist, former Special Forces Operator and a police officer with years of experience in both military and civilian applications. Arnie Malham is the founder of a number of different companies and organizations, including BetterBookClub.com. He's also the author of “Worth Doing Wrong,” where he discusses how to build a sustainable business model through company culture. Listen to this week's episode as he shares #hospitality insights with Dan Ryan today! Takeaways: At work, your team will never treat clients better than how the boss treats the team. That is one of the many forms of hospitality. If you put people in a position and don't pay them well and they don't believe in the team then there is a discomfort that grows. Core values start with a team leader. It's easy for a leader to praise certain values but it's important that the leader also is willing to help with even the little things and show they are invested and they care. Embrace growth, always be confident, be optimistic, and prepare. These are 4 core values to have going through life. It's the little things that can make a difference for a guest. Things like certain types of bedsheets and toilet paper can make them feel important and known. As a team, don't say no to any idea. It's ok to be wrong, but saying no creates a roadblock and might discourage people from sharing anymore of their ideas. Quote of the Show: 6:26 I'm a believer in that the core values and culture start with the leader. And in fact, they start and end with a leader, that leader. The leader of an organization, a team that is the number one thing that sets the tone for culture and core values. And then what that leader does versus what that leader says. It's easy to go down a list and determine if those two things match up. I'll quote Jack Daly again. I'm pretty sure he said, ‘I can tell you your values based on your calendar. I can look at your calendar and tell you your values, because it doesn't matter what you say, the question is, are you doing the things that match your values, that match your priorities?' It's little things. It's where the leader parks, it's where the leaders are willing to participate in and the cleanliness of the environment. It's what he or she accepts and praises, but almost more importantly, what he or she tolerates. What a leader tolerates in their business, in themselves, in their direct reports and in the entire team, I think has as much to do with setting the tone of a culture than anything else.” Links: Arnie's Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/arniemalham/ Company website: https://www.worthdoingwrong.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/amalham Book: https://www.amazon.com/Worth-Doing-Wrong-Quest-Culture/dp/159932587X Shout Outs: 0:18 MIT Entrepreneurial Masters Program 3:54 Jack Daley 19:13 Andrew Scarlett 22:50 Andrew Benioff 22:52 Independent Lodging Congress 22:57 Nico 22:59 Pan Pacific in Seattle 34:34 Loren Brill 34:35 Sweet Loren's 43:22 John DiJulius 46:05 Verne Harnish 58:28 Hilton Hotels Ways to Tune In: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPX Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1s YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1mEu_pueA8

It was great catching up with Chef Bernard Guillas at the Marine Room in La Jolla. I had almost forgotten what a wonderful positive, uplifting person that he is and funny too. He brings us up to date about what is happening in San Diego, how he is managing things through the pandemic, the shifts that he has made during this time and his continual love for food and fresh ingredients. Chef Bernard Guillas joined La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, Inc. as executive chef in June 1994. Right at home in La Jolla, Guillas' affinity for the coastal lifestyle reminded him of his home in Brittany. "When I lived in France, the smell of the sea and the lure of its bounty were constantly part of our table," Guillas recalls. "I'm inspired by the variety and quality of the local produce and seafood found throughout our region. I love to use my classical training and my love for Pan Pacific flavors in all our restaurants." Guillas is responsible for directing the resort's three restaurants and all catering operations for the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, the Shores Restaurant at the La Jolla Shores Hotel, and the landmark Marine Room Restaurant. “We must look up,” explains Choe Peng Sum, CEO of Pan Pacific Hotels Group, in our latest episode of The Future of Travel. Speaking to David and Catherine, he acknowledges that we're in the midst of a crisis of unmatched magnitude, but he is optimistic that recovery will come in 2021. The question is whether or not we're ready for it. Choe concedes the importance of conserving cash, but he stresses that you can't just hide away and do nothing. He sees commercial opportunities – not only due to low interest and exchange rates – but also in the way hoteliers do business. Choe says the hotel industry has traditionally been very backwards. He hopes this crisis will open our minds to doing things differently, whether that's that means rethinking booking platforms or simply reassessing the importance we place on looking after our teams, our guests and the wider community.
