Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we complete our miniseries on rotoscoped games with part two of The Last Express. We talk about the sweep of history, playing parallel, ending in Vienna and other topics before turning to takeaways. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: To Vienna (Tim), Somewhere after Strasbourg (Brett) Issues covered: different puzzle formats and it still working, not knowing what to do with the bug, diverting to The Murder on the Orient Express plot, putting a spin on the old plots, Tim has a favorite tea, political violence in games, world history on the march, the tension of violence in political discourse, the legendary cities it passes through, avoiding caricature for the most part, the melting pot, strong writing and performances, naturalism and theatrics, countries shifting, passing through empires, playing parallel versions of the story, trying the wrong rooms, the medical issue of the older Russian, the importance of time, games that are watertight, the appearance of simulation, adjusting the state machine, wondering whether the game knows what you know, the dog and having to get it into place, a consistent character, committing to a different sort of game and the downstream consequences, comparing with more abstract games, adding constraints, pulling in things from other media, making a big leap forward in realism and groundedness, the talent for keyframing grounded animation, getting metrics and level design constraints from the animation, deeper and different storytelling, teasing an interview, Gogo and Umaro and tuning your player experience. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: MYST, Agatha Christie, And Then There Were None, CSI, Peter Ustinov, Kenneth Branagh, Sherlock Holmes, Scream, Wes Anderson, The Darjeeling Limited, Far Cry (series), Sierra, LucasArts, Anton Chekhov, Karateka, Deadline, The Witness, The 7th Guest, Prince of Persia, Firewatch, The Walking Dead, Jake Gyllenhaal, Source Code, Rian Johnson, David Bowie, Duncan Jones, Edge of Tomorrow, Michelle Monaghan, Groundhog Day, Bill Murray, Deathloop, Prey: Mooncrash, Day of the Tentacle, Vienna Waits for You, A Death in Venice, Another World, Super Mario (series), Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit, Fire and Ice, Eric Chahi, Jordan Mechner, Ray Harryhausen, Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, Phantasmagoria, Police Quest, Grim Fandango, Akira Toriyama, Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest, Dragonball Z, Ashmann86, Em, Final Fantasy VI, Rage, Bethesda Game Studios, Kingdom Hearts III, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a little miniseries of games which heavily feature rotoscoping and different ways in which that technology is used, starting with Another World (1991). We set the game in its time, talk about rotoscoping, and discuss a lot about the world and games which seem descended from it. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Whole darn thing (well, almost, Tim) Issues covered: swinging back and forth in cages, starting and stopping the game, rotoscoping and some places it's been used, the basics of rotoscoping, how far Tim got in the past, baffling fluidity, echoes of other media, excellent character design, a "yes" game, other influences, thinking of this in terms of Mario, a cinematic moment, not making the movement a goal, choosing moments over systems, a fork in the lineage road, doing a project of this length solo, having a singular vision, hinting what you should pay attention to, the limits of tech and whether it can do anything for you, working on games that you wouldn't necessarily play.
Today, we'll be looking back at Another World, released for the Amiga ST in 1991. As part of the discussion, we'll look at the carrer of its creator, Eric Chahi. We'll also look at retrospective reviews to see what critics and gamers have thought about the game. Finally, we'll talk at length about the game and its impact on other game designers. Join us for an out of this worldly trip down Memory Card Lane.
Part four of our series on Eric Chahi's Another World - finally, the development story of the game itself!
Part three of our series on Eric Chahi's Another World - focusing purely on the development history of Chahi's early titles.
Part two of our series on Eric Chahi's Another World, this time devoted to the meat of the topic.
Part one of our series on Eric Chahi's Another World. This catch-up episode is very listener mail-heavy!
“RUN PROJECT 23” In the penultimate podcast of our tenth year, we mark the 30th anniversary of Eric Chahi's Another World. Leon, Chris, Karl, Tony and community contributors recall being blasted from the comfort of their swanky science bunker to the cold, dark, tentacle filled water of an alien realm, and beyond. Furthermore we talk about the game's remarkable prescience and legacy, as well as a little on its SEGA CD only sequel, Heart of the Alien.
Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on 1989's genre-defining Populous. We take a little more time with the game and then think about how and why and it might have hit so big at the time, in addition to considering its principal designer, Peter Molyneux. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Several more battles Podcast breakdown: 0:50 Populous Discussion 51:30 Break 52:02 Feedback Issues covered: Tim's new podcast, the thinness of the game, the systems present in the game, minimal surfacing, settlers and food and buildings, getting a feel for systems rather than directly understanding or showing them, finding a formula, reinforcing castles as good but it maybe leading to a poor dynamic, indirect control, being unable to stop them from making castles, weird ant farm thoughts, overclicking, building up to flood them, speed-land raising by the AI, flooding rather than swamping, the OCD clean-up dopamine, turning the tides, tit-for-tat strategies, a narrow tipping point for Brett, not knowing what to do about things, forgetting about the population bars, getting to flood conditions, being ready to do the thing at the right time, wanting to act on the enemy at exactly the right place, fighting on the borders, pinball wizardry, examining the "load-out" of the level set-up, the fun of playing genre-defining games, that Unique Selling Proposition, finding the big selling point, calcifying genres and breaking away, being not "another one of those," shooting an eye out from a mile away, Molyneux's unique talent, overselling his ideas, child-like enthusiasm, being a forcing function on development, going beyond the limits of what's possible, different approaches to how you push beyond preconceptions, console generation and caring less about new hardware, interesting games being interesting on any platform, an Ubisoft model, applying the specific game to every design, the value of working cheap, having the value of working with more interesting hardware, simulating lots of Little Computer People, how we build an image today, not being able to re-render the whole screen, getting to the interface they had, actually using all the screen to play, being confused about how it all works, runtime performance of PCs in the 1980s, the screenshot test, selling the experience not the visuals, severe technical constraints, switching from another industry, creative leadership in different industries, being willing to step down before stepping back up, the difficulty of going from peak to peak, leveraging your leadership/mentoring skills. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Northern Exposure, Voice of the Last Frontier, SimCity, GTA, Civ, Dungeon Keeper, Dominion, The Who, Thief, Ultima (series), Heroes of Might and Magic, Dave Perry, Shiny, MDK, Peter Molyneux, Syndicate, Bioshock, Shigeru Miyamoto, Pikmin, Roberta Williams, Space Quest/King's Quest, PS2, Ubisoft, Immortals: Fenyx Rising, Monster (energy drinks), Michel Ancel, Bullfrog, Populous: The Beginning, From Dust, Eric Chahi, Yannick from Germany, Maas Neotek, Amiga, John Romero, Benoit B. The world is in a terrible place right now, but we need to look to the positives. Which is what Brad & Stu try to do in this week's podcast. When it comes to games, Brad has been all over Animal Crossing and DOOM Eternal, but also made a start on the intriguing One Step From Eden. Whilst Stu has been playing Voxel Fly, Eric Chahi's Paper Beast and a little know game called Half Life Alyx. All three of those in VR. Talk then moves to how we're coping in the lockdown and what we've been doing to pass the time. Brad is in a difficult situation and is in the process of applying for Universal Credit... it's not going well. They also let their thoughts be known on the despicable actions of the likes of Tim Martin and Mike Ashley over the past week.
Time to discuss the science of scary with my guest Mike from The Controller Throwers and the game Another World. We break down this title as horror and look at the premise of the unfortunate tale of Lester Knight Chaykin, not being an action hero, development by Eric Chahi and old indies, why the name was changed to "Out of this World", the science of cover art design, Mike finding his long lost cart after decades, why some love the game and why some hate it, the many ways to die and death animations, similar contemporary games, rotoscoping, Max Fleischer and Don Bluth, lacking gaminess, early cinematic and atmospheric storytelling, the question of a boundary between film and game, exposition vs pacing a narrative, re-releases, Heart of the Alien and Heart of Darkness, the idea of needing sequels, influential games and what Another World has inspired, experiencing as playing vs watching, oversaturation, and the definition of a classic.Links: medium.com/@thaisweiller/games-are-not-art-9a7e540e4bf1twitch.tv/tcthrowersthewellredmage.wordpress.com/2016/03/06/another-world/thewellredmage.com/2018/10/23/another-world-20th-anniversary-edition-2018-switch/Patreon: patreon.com/thewellredmageGuest: @TCThrowersSupport the show (http://www.patreon.com/thewellredmage)

Oh my God you found us. We don't know how, but you found us. RUN FOR IT MARTY!! Welcome once again, fans of game music on vinyl, to this episode of Video Game Grooves, and boy have we ever got a podcast for you! Paul is away and Anthony has come down with a case of sexy-diseased-podcaster voice, but we are powering through it! For starters, we begin with the Moonshake release of Donkey Kong Country, and a little about the composer David Wise and his early work with Rare Ltd. Anthony picks his favorite tracks from the game and we get very honest about the similarities between our selection and a certain musical artist you didn't know you actually love, you nerd. Next, Jeremy teleports us to Another World, with the music of Jean-Francois Freitas. We judge the relative merit of the game in a historical context against other staples of the era, and we discuss the unusual direction Eric Chahi gave about the sound for the game. We also sample a couple of alternate track versions on the Black Screen Records release, and explain what a "disk read" is to you youngsters. We hit the news, and the new releases, and in our special first-ever community participation discussion segment, we discuss the question of autographs: Do you seek them? Do you like them? Have you ever done anything extraordinary to get one? And what are some of your favorite signatures, if any? Let's see if you bastards can do 78! REJUGANDO ANOTHER WORLD Despues de vacaciones volvemos con un clásico del año 91 de la mano Igone Martinez con Eric Chahi y Delphine Software.
