Welcome to episode #211! This week, Matt and Braden talk about changing our mindset to help find freedom from porn. Challenging lies we believe is uncomfortable. Often it's the foundation we've built and we are standing on. We find comfort in it, even if it's a shaky ground. We find that we would rather be on the shaky ground than on the firm foundation - where God is calling us to. We have to break the mindset of “I don't think I'll ever be free”. We tell ourselves that we can't do something, even when we are already in the midst of doing it. But we need to tell ourselves we can, and allow our body to relax and let God pull you. We need to let the grace of God replace the vice in our life. 1 Corinthians tells us that because of the grace of God, we have been enriched in every way. Within the context of our sexual sin, God's grace can empower us and pull us and be the water we rest on. We need to pursue peace and be empowered by the grace of God instead of empowered by our own performance of how long we can be free from a behaviour. The difference is not the capability, it's the mindset. When Matt succeeded on the wakeboard, it wasn't because he had a miraculous skill set that appeared ten minutes after he had failed. When it comes to sexual sin, we all have the same capabilities to find freedom, because the ability is within the Holy Spirit. We need to make sure we have the right mindset. When we are focused on our stress and our anxiety, we are tense. When we are focused on the presence of God and the Holy Spirit, we find peace and freedom. Welcome to episode #210! This week, Matt and Braden talk about the connection between financial things and sexual immorality. We are given the choice between life & death, between blessing and cursing. God implores us to choose life. There is no grey area. When we are not walking with God and walking in sin, there will be physical and spiritual ramifications. Choosing life and walking in the ways of the Lord brings blessings - both spiritual and physical. Take a look at the blessings and curses. If you take a look at the second order of consequences to having sexual sin in your life, it will help you realize where your heart is at so that you can be transparent. Our life has a lot of webs that are linked and we often don't see how the choices in one area can impact another area. We tend to compartmentalize our life and miss those links. Transparency is the first step. We need to be transparent with God and others. If we feel we can't pray, ask others to intercede for you. Be honest with God with where you're at. Jean had to admit to God that he loved the sin but didn't like the curses that came with it and had to ask for help to overcome and let go of it before he could work at getting free. That is when God showed up for him.Ask a questionHave a question you'd like answered live on an episode? Healthy and thriving marriages filled with love are cultivated over longer periods. Just like with grapes grown to make wine, it can take years of purposeful attention to the proverbial soil quality of this covenantal relationship. Sometimes there can be little rocks under the surface that end up choking the life and love out of marriages. Little things left unchecked can become big problems. So, how do we identify these rocks and get them out of the soil of our marriages so that the fruit of this relationship can be intoxicatingly healthy? This is exactly what we are going to discuss in today's episode with Neil & Sharol Josephson from FamilyLife. Before stepping into the call to work with FamilyLife, Neil worked as a Bible school president and Sharol as a TV broadcaster. Together they also worked as marriage pastors at a large church in Southern California. In addition, they have served as the directors of FamilyLife Canada and have recently stepped into a role as the directors of FamilyLife International. Neil and Sharol have been married for over 40 years and have a great depth of understanding and wisdom in what it takes to have a thriving marriage. This was a great conversation and we know it will impact your life.Checkout FamilyLife GlobalStart Your Journey With Our New “In God's Image” Resource

Diddy, Kanye and Bill Hybels and the things that they were a part of, the loss of some of their reputations and the lessons we can pick up from them. We need to be careful with how much faith we put into people. We don't know what is happening behind closed doors for those who have a platform. Eventually things will come out and be exposed. Money and power won't be able to hide secrets forever. We need to remember that we can see someone a certain way - often a mask or an image that is a created version of that person, so when details about their lives become exposed, it can be difficult to come to terms with. We need to look at Christ first. We need to put our faith and hope in God. We can still look up to and learn from people but have to understand that men or women we follow are in fact human and will make mistakes. When people who we look up to fall, it's important that we still look to Christ so we don't lose our faith. We can take what's good from these people, but we need to be careful when we lift people as heroes. When looking to find freedom and healing, the best place to go to is directly in God's word. Following Jesus is an inside out life. It's living out of an inner working that is done in our heart. What's revealed in a Christ follower is the fruit of what is happening in the heart. The worldly approach is outside in. We focus on the outside at the detriment to the inner life. If we live from the outside in, we can start to create a persona or something that isn't true so that we appear a certain way to others. Decisions can become more sinful and the inside can begin to rot. We need to follow Jesus first and allow him to work from the inside out and not allow the world to rule from the outside in.Ask a questionHave a question you'd like answered live on an episode? If you were to rate the health of your marriage or family today, how would you score? 10/10, living in bliss? 5/10, with some challenges and struggles? Lower? Marriages and families go through different seasons, but the good news is that you don't have to go through them alone. There are supports to help you and your family: counsellors, pastors, churches, and ministry organizations who are there to come alongside you wherever you find yourself on the journey. One of those organizations is FamilyLife Canada, a ministry of Power to Change, which exists to bring help and hope to every marriage and family. They believe: The family is the foundation of every community. A healthy marriage is the cornerstone of a strong family. The ultimate and lasting strength of every marriage and family is found in a relationship with Jesus Christ. This month, we are excited to have Neil and Sharol Josephson of FamilyLife Canada with us. Previously a Bible College President and a TV news anchor, Neil and Sharol have devoted this season of life to marriage and family ministry—first at a large church in California and now with FamilyLife Canada. Neil and Sharol have been married for 41 years. They love Jesus, each other and their family, especially their four remarkable grandchildren! Join us for this helpful and powerful conversation, where we talk about strengthening marriage, supporting singleness, building relationships and families that thrive, and how men can be strong and steadfast blessings to their loved ones. This week, Matt and Braden talk with Sam Black about his book “Healing the church” and equipping church leaders on how to talk about sexual brokenness in the church.Pornography is undermining every ministry in the church. The average age for first exposure is 8-12 and so our children's ministries are being impacted by pornography whether we recognize it or not. If we don't equip parents, we are missing the opportunity to protect them and provide them ongoing guidance. Pornogrpahy impacts our teens and youth ministry and marriage and adult ministries. Two thirds of men and one third of women in the church say they have an ongoing struggle with pornography. There is a direct correlation between pornography use and prayer, scripture life, church attendance, feelings about being close to God and doubts about your faith. A university study showed that there is a direct link between how much porn someone used and whether they would serve in their church over the next 6 years. It is important that the church is the safe place for people to go with their addictions to find recovery. You don't need a perfect plan - you need a first next step. This will allow people to create that first step in their own lives. Every step leads to another step. The book breaks down the steps into “easy steps” - something you don't have to think much about; there are “small steps” - steps you can implement without a lot of effort; then “medium” and “large” steps to lead into full recovery. Taking it one step at a time makes it easier and less overwhelming to accomplish and walk into recovery. There are 3 common factors that ministry leaders miss for why people get stuck. 1 - Early childhood exposure. It's so impactful on their brain that even as an adult they can tell you a complete story of that first exposure, but nothing else about that day. 2 - The ongoing use and repetition that burns neuro pathways in the brain to crave it more and more. 3 - Some pain or trauma that happened at a young age can happen elsewhere. These three create pornography as an escape that has been done thousands of times. This is where a safe place and process comes in. The knowledge precedes understanding and understanding precedes change.Ask a questionHave a question you'd like answered live on an episode? Make a tangible difference for FREE by joining the Action Squad at www.restoredministries.ca/actionsquad.Welcome to episode #207! This week, Matt and Braden talk with Nadine Crain about purity culture, what it is, how to address it and how to discuss purity and sexuality with your kids and within the church. What is “purity culture”?Purity culture came about in the ‘90's when the “true love waits” movement happened. It was created in response to raising statistics of teenage pregnancies. Sex education in schools was not what the churches were wanting, so they were pushing the “true love waits” teaching. It was reactionary, but was coming from a good place of wanting to lead youth to how they can follow God and not fall into sin. Unfortunately, it became very black and white - if you stay pure, you are blessed, and if not, your worth suffers. It's so focused on behaviour and shame and not based on the grace of God. So while there are good attributes to the movement, it has left a lot of people who grew up with it full of shame when they "mess up" and even when they don't, they get to marriage with no concept of how to have a healthy sex life. We need to approach purity from a theological standpoint. Purity has been associated with sex and marriage rather than being in God's presence. Purity is meant for us to be in God's presence. Nothing that we do will undo what Jesus did to get us into God's presence. Having this understanding takes a lot of pressure off of wondering if we can approach God after we've messed up. God cleanses us, not anything we do. When looking at purity culture as staying away from sex until marriage and never addressing it until you say ‘I do' leaves us unequipped to deal with sex in marriage. It's important to find the middle ground between “don't have sex” and “do whatever you want”. That middle ground is found in the conversations. Parents, leaders and teachers need to be open to the curious questions that teens and young people will have and be a person that they are comfortable to approach. Gauge the appropriateness of the age but keep the conversation open so when they are at the age to start dating it's more than just the “one sex talk”. Parents and leaders' job is to guide to help them make wise decisions and be informed and equipped to make the decisions. By building up the theological explanations in your kids, then they will have what they need. It will help them develop in their relationship with God and can help them on the right path or find it again if they veer off. Ask a questionHave a question you'd like answered live on an episode? This week, Matt and Braden speak with Elizabeth Good - CEO and founder of Foundation United and author of “Speak the Unspeakable”. Elizabeth grew up loving her family and church and those are a huge part of her purpose. The enemy attacked her family from a young age but the Lord has helped her not lose her fight for staying in her purpose and destiny. She faced death and abuse from a young age and the enemy tried to use people to make her hate the church/specific denominations. Shame kept her unreconciled for many decades. She would attend church and would look fine on the outside, but the pain and the shame of what happened to her had her looking for ways to numb it - ways like porn and drinking. Confession helps bring things to the light.Elizabeth didn't realize she was hiding and that she was not fully free. The deception from the enemy kept her thinking that because she was going to and was involved in church meant that everything was okay. There were a lot of open doors and footholds that she was unaware of that the enemy was using to block her from receiving healing and reconciliation with God. James 5:16 says “confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed”. Once she confessed she needed to learn to walk out our healing. She now uses what she went through as a tool to help others find freedom and healing.Ask a questionHave a question you'd like answered live on an episode? Welcome to episode #204! This week, Matt and Braden talk with John Daugherty from Be Broken Ministries about grace based models for recovery. Grace is not opposed to effort. Our effort doesn't earn anything from God. But we need to put in effort for recovery. There is nothing that we can do that will make God love us more or less. We need to understand that our identity, our value and worth cannot fluctuate. We can then use that worth as a starting point to work on our recovery. Instead of feeling like we need to prove ourselves and base our worth on our performance, we can rely on the truth that our worth comes from God and we don't need to earn it. We have to shift the ultimate focus in grace-based recovery. We come in with a performance based bias, with the goal being a behavioural outcome. Whatever the addictive compulsion is, our assumed goal is to not have those behaviours. We try to replace it with a better, more positive behaviour. Grace-based models shift the focus from a behaviour-first outcome to understanding a relational outcome and understanding what it means to be made in God's image and to love Him and others. We want to be in a safe enough space to be able to share the fullness of our stories and build those authentic relationships with others and God. Parents have a great responsibility to set the tone of conversations in the home. It can be intimidating to talk about your story to your families. It is good to divulge our stories and talk about what we learned from it and how we are continuing to grow and manage our sexuality. Stories are our connectors of our transformations over our lifetime. The family unit is God's primary unit that transformation is to happen between generations. By starting those conversations in the home and creating that environment it can build honesty, vulnerability, openness, and the ability to share feelings and ask questions.Ask a questionHave a question you'd like answered live on an episode? Welcome to episode #203! This week, Matt and Braden talk about fighting our battles with a focus on resilience and the importance of resilience and endurance in battles against sexual sin and life in general. In battles, we need to think in short terms. It isn't always easy to think in the short term especially when we don't want to do hard things or particular tasks. We just see the big, overwhelming war instead of a smaller battle. However, thinking in terms of small increments can be helpful. When we think in short terms, we can think “I can get through this moment or 90 seconds” rather than focusing on the struggle, it builds resilience. Knowing how to endure and get through battles builds character. Then when we look back at the bigger picture, all those small moments where we endured and were resilient will be helpful for when we face hardships or temptations again. We saw what we could do in that moment and can repeat it. How do we know we can break free and stay free?We need to have an understanding of resiliency and endurance. We need to look inward and go to God and heal from whatever is holding us back. We can renew our minds and change the way that we view our battles as a training ground instead of a burden. An opportunity to heal and grow. Resilience and endurance are not things that come second nature - they take time to build and grow in our lives.God is our Conqueror. We aren't called to win all the battles - God has already won. We are already in victory and we can learn to fight from victory. God is our refuge, even in the midst of temptation. He is what we need. Amidst everything we are going through with temptations and struggles, God wants to be our refuge - our place we turn to when we are feeling overwhelmed. We need to focus on the reality that God is with us, not that the struggle is still there. Ask a questionHave a question you'd like answered live on an episode? Welcome to episode #202! This week, Matt and Braden talk with Mike Novotny about his new book: “Taboo: Topics Christian's should be talking about but don't”.God has taken Mike's shameful sin and used it to give Jesus glory. The devil is the father of lies. He wants us in secret and in the quiet. When we are transparent about what we're going through, often people will react differently than we expect. People want to be a part of a church or community where they feel like they belong. We are not alone in our shameful sins and the more we talk about “taboo subjects” the less taboo they become. We need to start those conversations to encourage people and bring them out of the darkness and shame and into God's glory. Mike touches on two ways we are missing the mark and can do better about these topics. 1 - Saying nothing about huge cultural issues and just hoping it will work out. The world is going to preach a thousand sermons about these topics. As the church and people who love people, we need to also be speaking up and preaching as well. We fear not having the perfect answer, so we don't say anything. 2 - We speak the truth, but often fail to speak it in love. It's easy to get fired up about the violation of truth, but we forget about the people who are struggling deeply. Everyone is wrestling with something and they need a place to talk about it and for truth to be spoken to in humility, compassion and love. We need to understand these hot topics/issues from multiple sides and why people think differently than what the bible says about them. This will turn up empathy, not turn down biblical passion, and will help to speak the truth in love. Ask a questionHave a question you'd like answered live on an episode? Welcome to episode #200! This week, Matt and Braden talk about our sexual "duty" in marriage. Sex is not just for the husband! If sex is ever mentioned as a “duty” it always has a negative connotation and usually said that way by the wife. In the bible, both spouses are called to serve each other - not just the wives. If only one spouse doesn't feel like it's a duty, you need to address the disfunction in the marriage to find healing and intimacy. We don't want the mentality of it's a “duty” and it is something that has to get done. We want to do it because it is fun to connect with my spouse in this way. God designed sex in marriage to be for both the husband and the wife! God wants married couples to have a mutually gratifying sexlife. Every wife and every husband wants to be deeply connected together. There needs to be empathy between spouses to close the gap if there is a difference in drive or libido. Get on the same page as each other - remember you are not enemies. Argue from their perspective. Sex is other focused - put on the shoes of the other spouse. When you are on the same page as each other, you are able to be mutually gratified. God wants us to feel safe & secure in our marriages. Your goal is to make your spouse feel safe. If there is something in your sex life that isn't making your spouse feel safe, you need to figure that out and work through or remove it. If there is something you don't like (or do like) make sure to have the conversations about it so that you can come together with an understanding. A lot can be solved in conversation. Don't just assume until you talk and know.Ask a questionHave a question you'd like answered live on an episode? Welcome to episode #200! This week, Matt and Braden talk about a different perspective when you are feeling Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired or Stressed. When you go through trials, don't just avoid the trial to avoid sin, but rather ask how you can use it to mature. We need to realize that when we are simply pursuing comfort rather than being at peace in the discomfort, that is a worldly response. All we are trying to do is get out of the situation and we end up avoiding the chance to mature emotionally. Jesus models being in this situation when he is tempted in the desert. When he was hungry and alone and the devil came to tempt him, he didn't go eat first - His response was not a physical comfort. His response was speaking truth to the enemy and the heart of the situation, not the immediate satisfaction. This response set him as an example as we began his ministry. We can't rely on our own strength, we need to learn to rely on God. God can raise the dead and scripture tells us to rely on him. And he wants to help us in the midst of our trials and temptations. He wants us to go to him and he will sustain, get you through and heal you. Things might seem too hard or the journey too long, but God is with you and he is sufficient. We need to welcome Him into the moment and learn how to let those temptations push us towards him rather than just asking him to take them away. Focus on Him and praise him rather than focus on the temptation. View HALTS as a holy moment of discomfort that God wants to work in. It takes intentional work to change your mentality. It can be hard to remember thankfulness when you are going through temptation or are experiencing HALTS. It is a practice to engage in. It can be easier to work things into our life (work, relationships, etc) so we don't have to feel those moments of loneliness or anger, etc. But when you take those moments and view them as a holy moment, God can use them to become the centre of your life. Welcome to episode #199! This week, Matt and Braden talk about the importance of good, healthy friendships in your life and how they can correlate with overcoming sexual sin.God designed us to be in communityIt's important to have a church family if you are a follower of Jesus. Family connections and friendships are central to our spiritual, physical and mental health. We need people in our life who are looking out for us. It is a two way street that we can also be looking out for people as well. Friends spur us on, they see the good in us and call us out when we are not acting the way we should. Friendships can be foundational in getting you out of an addiction. There are different levels of friendship that you'll have with people - some are more “fun” and some are deep or more serious. There is value in having those different relationships with people. When friends are calling you out on your dirt, they are actually speaking to who you are, to your true, God-given identity. They want to expose the gold in your life and help you get rid of the junk. You need to make sure to have those types of relationships to help you find freedom. Learn what it means to have good friendships. There is an active component to friendship. We need to encourage, spur each other on and call out good in each other. If you aren't sure if a friendship is a healthy one or toxic, you can reference this verse to evaluate. Toxic people are toxic to your life. Welcome to episode #198! This week, Matt and Braden talk about the differences between men and women in this special Valentines Day episode. It is important to compliment your spouse… …even if they aren't returning the gesture. It is our opportunity to love when we aren't loved back. Remember that God is our first love and when we honour our spouse, we honour God through that. We live to glorify God - in our marriage, in our jobs, in all areas of our life. Men - call your wife beautiful. Women - speak to your husband's identity. Men and women are created differently. While women crave safety and to be cherished, men crave to be appreciated and respected. Ask about your spouse's expectations (for Valentines Day and for romance in general). It might seem less romantic to ask what your spouse would like, but asking the questions helps to avoid friction. When it comes to gift expectations for the day, or in general for sexual and non-sexual touch, clear communication and knowing what they like and desire leads to a better marriage and more romance within it. It removes the frustration and assumptions and bridges the gap of difference. Valentine's Day is the perfect day to start! Invite the Lord into your Valentines and relationships. He wants to love you and have that love relationship with you. He wants to be primary in your life. His unfailing love is new every morning. God knows how to love us best and when we ask him into this area of relationships, he will help us love our spouse as well. Ask a questionHave a question you'd like answered live on an episode? Welcome to episode #197! This week, Matt and Braden talk about social media. When you're looking at social media, remember you're looking at the highlight reel. It can be easy to compare and we feel bad about ourselves or where we are in life. It creates a nasty cycle. The emotions are negative, we are filled with longing and our relationships can become passive. If the full extent of your relationship with someone is via social media, you can see the highlights of what's going on, but you won't fully know what is going on with them. The level of depth and engagement isn't there. It can become a very superficial relationship. Social media can be a tool for good. Use wisdom with what you're using social media for. You can send encouraging messages or comments. You can use it as a launching point to start a conversation with someone to encourage them in their highs and lows. It can be used for good. But make sure that that is what you are using it for. If it is becoming a trigger, it is okay to step back and reset for a few months. Be aware of when you are using social mediaIt might not be wise to use it right before bed when our brains are more reactive and emotional. We tend to make more negative decisions late at night. Think about the environment you are in and if you are going to social media as a response and leads to a trigger. Lack of awareness can result in social media being harmful for us. This week, Matt and Braden dive in to porn and how it is the biggest internal threat within the church. Porn and sexual addiction is only taboo if we don't talk about it. When it is time to address something uncomfortable in the church, it doesn't get brought up because it's not comfortable. When it comes to caring for the sheep, they will be fed healthy stuff, but any wounds that aren't addressed can get infected and it will wreck the whole body. Your direct family might not have any sexual sin or perversion, but it does exist in your church family and it will infect the members if it continues to remain unaddressed. The Church can also be a big beacon of hope. We should be the biggest beacon of hope because we have Jesus. It just takes one person getting free. When we get free, we are able to help those around us and pull them out of the mud. When we step out in the call God has for our life and start walking and living in that, God is able to work through that person and bring hope into the world. We need to be careful to not become performative and legalistic within the church. We become inauthentic and wear masks when we stop sharing what is going on with others. We need to be aware of when we are trying to hide our life from others and act as though everything is okay and there is nothing wrong. We feel the need to keep a status and feel we need to be performative to be accepted by God. But God doesn't work that way and the church needs to be honest and real. When we are open and real with God and the church/your close community, God is able to work in your life and in the church in powerful ways. This week, Matt and Braden answer a question about healing from the imprints of your childhood. You Are Not AloneEveryone has the influence of their childhood. It can be difficult to break away from certain imprints that happened to you. You need to have compassion for yourself as there are good things that came from your childhood. For the things that we want to change or imprints we want to grow out of, we need to realize that we are made to mimic our parents and need to have grace with ourselves when there are things we want to change. God works in our layers of brokennessThere are good things that our parents or family of origin passed on to us. However, there is still brokenness and things that we may need to come to terms with. We have to take ownership of our actions now. We can carry on those good, healthy cycles that we grew up with, but we have the power to break those negative cycles and replace them with good in our own families. There are different experiences that can counter the imprints of our childhood. Joseph in the bible could've just believed his father and brothers when they didn't think his dream would come true. He could've continued on with a sense of entitlement. But he spent years in jail and where his father doubted him, someone else said “I believe in you. You can lead a whole country.” Throughout his story, God was with him. Because of how close he was with God, the imprinting of his childhood didn't affect God's ability to change and shape him.Ask a questionHave a question you'd like answered live on an episode? This week, Matt and Braden talk about deliverance and what it means for us.You have to take ownership of your own life. The devil can tempt, lie, and entice us but he cannot force us to do anything. We have full control and choice in our lives. He will try and get us to make certain choices. The more we make a choice towards something, the more we are in agreement with that thing. Each choice might get easier and easier and then we can get entrenched into something really bad. Or really good! Depending on the choices that we make. As a Christian, we can be oppressed. HOWEVER, when it comes to the authority structure, when we profess Jesus as Lord of our life, that will make the difference from oppression to possession. If someone is possessed, it is because they have given full agreement and authority to satan. When we have the mindset of: Jesus is mine, I receive fully from him, I believe in Him, I have repented and He is mine and I am His - the authority of your life is now in Christ. Unawareness can lead to agreements that we didn't intend. The power of the Holy Spirit working in our lives, and talking with others can help direct us to see blind spots in our lives we aren't aware of. It doesn't mean we will be immune to attacks, but when faced with temptation and attacks, we can choose to listen to the truth and the lies will dissipate. To make those decisions we need to be on solid footing and be aware that he will attack. Take captive your thoughts and give them to the Lord. Submit to God, resist the enemy and he will flee. This week, Matt and Braden talk about rationalizations and justifications that we use to go to sexual sin.We need a different perspective. We often blame other people or circumstances to justify our behaviour. Throughout scripture there is a whole different perspective on situations. When we bring things to God, we are able to replace it with truth and it reveals your heart's belief behind the justification. We have to build ourselves up in God's strength outside of the moments of temptation. We need to learn to bring the truth of Jesus and scripture into those moments of justification and temptation and that doesn't happen in the heat of the moment. We need to bring our justifications to the table - write them down - bring them to the Lord in a different state of mind so we can think through it and pray through it. When the hard times come, we will be better prepared to counter our justifications. Our view of God might be a justification. That is a victim mindset. If God doesn't clearly answer your prayer, He believes in you to figure it out. He will bring thoughts to your mind, you can look in the bible and dwell on the word and turn to praise. He is pouring belief into you allowing you to find Him in the midst of your temptation. It's easy to say he didn't answer and to be angry against God, but he cares about our hearts and he wants us to be in close relationship with Him. He is with us and listening. We have to be careful to not close ourselves off with this justification.Ask a questionHave a question you'd like answered live on an episode? This week, Matt and Braden talk about coming up to the line of things we maybe shouldn't be involved in - where the line is and why we need to be aware of it so we don't straddle it.It's the little things that start us down the path of damaging behaviour. It could be small visuals you see on YouTube or social media that you keep coming back to because of the dopamine rush you get. You just tiptoe up to the line without going over. The enemy plants little, subtle thoughts into our minds and tells us we can handle it. Be aware of what you are allowing into your mind. We can blur the line. There are times when we think it is God's voice when it is our own or our flesh. God doesn't lead us to a legalist standard that we can't handle. God wants our heart and is concerned about our heart. We need to apply wisdom and not legalism. Turn from our flesh desires and fill our lives with the Holy Spirit and the good things of the Spirit. Seek Godly community. Consider where your tipping points are. Think about the points in your life when the momentum takes over and you end up going further down that path. Take note of them and recognize when you are starting to get close to them. Find someone you can talk through the grey areas with to understand if those areas are moving you closer to the tipping points.Ask a questionHave a question you'd like answered live on an episode? Welcome to episode #191! This week, Matt talks with Walter Perez on the importance of community and allowing others to help you in your journey to be porn-free. Jesus gives you what you need before he gives you what you want. Walter prayed for one thing, but God knew what it was that he needed. Before Jesus heals the man lowered into the room by his friends, he forgave his sins. He does heal him, but it was more important for his sins to be forgiven. Community shows you that you aren't alone. You can help each other by talking about what you are learning or what God is showing you. You see that others are going through similar situations and can learn from what they did or are doing. In turn, when you are healthy, your story can be the one that can help another get and stay free. Jesus died for All sin. God's grace covers it all. You might think that you are alone in your own sexual preferences - in the type of porn you watch. Even if you are only watching something that is “innocent” or “soft” porn, God's love covers all of it. We are not here to compare, Jesus wants you, has forgiven you, and loves you. Come as you are, but remember, don't stay as you are. There is hope for you to get help and be healthy and grow into whatever it is that God has for you in the next stage of life. Welcome to episode #190! This week, Matt and Braden talk about some tips to help navigate through the issues that can contribute to a sexless marriage. We need to create bitesize steps and goals for ourselves. To get to the ultimate end goal, we need to take smaller steps and take little movements. When we just look at the end goal and all it entails, it can be overwhelming and we can end up not doing anything and not moving forward at all. It takes steps to get to that end goal. Seek to understand before you seek to be understood. Look for the currents that are causing the drift in your marriage and seek to correct them. Be intentional with connection. It's important to not just know their love language, but to understand how they feel love within that language. We need to be good at granting forgiveness and seeking forgiveness. It is important to talk about individual issues as a couple. It can be easy to end up shrouded in shame and guilt. When we keep things from our spouse, there is a lack of communication and gaps in understanding and it creates assumptions in our spouse. The gaps get filled in with those assumptions and it creates more divide. Create a space where you can share to get on the same page to figure out what kind of supports you need or steps to take toward healing. Welcome to episode #189! This week, Matt and Braden talk about issues that can lead to sexless marriages and what we can do to bring about a healthy sex life. Sex in marriage is biblical. There can be many causes for sexless marriages. Things like trauma - both physical and psychological; addiction - thinking you can get what you need from your porn habits; and even a family belief system that you don't need to have sex in your marriage. Scripture tells us to come together often and to only come apart (both parties involved in the decision) for a time to pursue prayer and fasting. The issues that are preventing sex in your marriage need to be addressed and dealt with. There are individual issues (trauma, addiction and beliefs) that keep us from having sex, but there are also marriage issues that come into play. Drift is the natural tendency in marriage - like a current that has the ability to carry us each in different directions without us even realizing it. We have to be proactive in preventing drift by investing in our marriage. A lot can be resolved through a conversation. Think inwardly for yourself - your own ideas. Don't make up answers for your spouse. Assume they want a really good connection in marriage. We don't always know how to get there. Have the conversations and look at the issues and see how you can work through them. It is never too late to start talking.Ask a questionHave a question you'd like answered live on an episode? Welcome to episode #188! This week, Matt and Braden talk about endurance and pushing through in your journey to becoming and remaining porn-free. You can pick up the word of God and seek the Comforter. This is a way to persevere through the discomfort. As you seek Him, God will meet you. Jesus had to persevere as well - when he was tempted by Satan, he responded with the Word of God each time. We will all face discomfort and temptation - it is a reality of life. But we can push through by seeking the Lord and His comfort. Often when we do the right thing, we face a lot of friction. We have to be intentional and make active decisions in this active battle. Culture has a lot of currents that will try and push against the tide of where we want to go in life. If we are passive and inactive we will be in the same cycle for years - full of shame and guilt. We need to seek God and endure through those moments of difficulties and trials. God never closes himself off from usAddictive patterns cause us to believe that God is closing himself off from us. We don't believe that we have what it takes to get his love or that we can be in his presence. We don't believe we have what it takes through the work of God in our life. Shame has us thinking “there is something wrong with me”. Endurance keeps our eyes on God. We have full access to his power, his comfort and his love. We need to focus our eyes and direction on Jesus. Ask a questionHave a question you'd like answered live on an episode? Welcome to episode #187! This week, Matt invites his wife Louise to replace Braden as co-host. They talk to Elisha and Katie from Now That We're A Family on how their decision to go smart-phone free affected sexual temptation, family time, and more.Be aware of potential open doorsElisha knew that any potential porn consumption in his life would come through his phone. Apart from sexual temptation, the work that can be done on the phone is distracting from family time as well, so he decided to make the jump to going smartphone-free.Katie held onto her smartphone for longer than Elisha did and she realized her inclination to be distracted by her phone. Using self-discipline was good to a point, but she realized that she only has so much self-control and would rather get a flip phone to eliminate the tension altogether. You can make things work without a smartphoneA large number of apps have desktop versions, so you can still get by in life just fine by using your desktop for things. It's easy to say that we need our smartphones for various reasons, but it's important to consider the cost of having one versus not having one. Looking at the reasons we can't go without it while welcoming sexual sin into our lives through the same device is not counting the true cost of having the phone.By looking at what you will gain instead of what you will lose will change your perspective on being willing to turn in your device. Going without a smartphone will likely be hard, but the payoff is immense.Create cravings for lifeThe amount of time spent on our phones, on porn, and in shame because of these addictions could otherwise be spent being creative, learning, or adventuring. You can create cravings for your life and for your kids by actually doing things that are fun, productive, relational, and creative. When we bury our heads into our devices and/or pornography, we're not craving anything else to the same degree. Eliminating screen time, open doors to sexual sin, and the addictive nature of devices will help you experience life in a new way and you'll start to come alive.Ask a questionHave a question you'd like answered live on an episode?
