In this insightful exploration of Step 1 from the Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book, Joe McDonald delves into the perils of self-medication. Reflecting on the passage, Joe highlights how easily individuals can be caught in the cycle of addiction, often exacerbated by attempts to manage symptoms with other substances like Valium or Ativan.Joe humorously recounts, “The doctor thought you may have had a little Valium deficiency. If you're a serious enough drinker, they'll treat your Valium deficiency every once in a while.” He points out how this approach, rather than alleviating the problem, often leads to quicker and more severe health declines, encapsulated in the phrase, “Better living through chemistry.”Joe's discussion sheds light on the broader issue within recovery communities where the focus sometimes shifts too narrowly, leading to debates about whether to talk about drugs or alcohol specifically. He emphasizes the importance of understanding that addiction, regardless of the substance, leads to the same destructive path.“We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.” This first step is crucial in recognizing the need for change and the dangers of self-medication.Join us as Joe McDonald reads and expands on the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, offering deeper understanding and practical advice for those on their recovery journey. Science correspondent Jen Martin joins us to talk about how your ability to recognise faces might be affected by how many high-quality close relationships you have. Chimpanzees have been observed going out of their way to find plants with medicinal qualities when they're ill. And a study in rats has found that a key brain signal linked to memory formation deteriorates after broken sleep. In this conversation, Von interviews hip-hop artist & friend Timothy Rhyme about Profound's (Timothy Rhyme & Gabriel Velasquez) latest single 'Heaven In My Mind'. They discuss the inspiration behind the song, the importance of maintaining a positive outlook, and the process of healing from past traumas. They also touch on the challenges of overcoming survival mode and the impact of unhealed wounds on future generations. The conversation emphasizes the value of self-reflection, gratitude, and the power of a clear mind."From the first drop of the chorus, this track is infectiously uplifting and encouraging. With the overwhelming chaos of the world we live in, Timothy Rhyme's lyrics remind us of the importance of a healthy mind and the rewards resilience can bring. We all have a past filled with trials and tribulations that we can look back on with pride and hope for the future. The steady progression of this song exemplifies how far a positive mindset can take you in pursuing your goals and learning to love life even in the mundane. Whether you are alone or with a crowd, this feel-good song will leave you eager to play it again and again." - ProfoundChapters (00:00) Introduction and Father's Day(02:08) The Creation of 'Heaven In My Mind'(04:58) Survival Mode and Switching it Off(06:38) The Impact of Drugs and Alcohol on Survival Mode(09:43) Breaking Generational Curses(15:24) The Importance of a Clear Mind and Gratitude(23:56) The Pitfalls of Hustle Culture(28:44) The Dangers of Self-Medication(32:36) The Power of Perspective and Gratitude(36:54) Conclusion and Reflections on the JourneyProfound Website:https://profound916.com/Profound IG:https://www.instagram.com/profound916/Follow Me on Social Media:Podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thevoncastshow/Music Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/shibavon/Website: https://www.iamvon.net/

‘What's wrong with me Google?' Welcome to the latest episode of Join The Docs where we dive headfirst into the digital rabbit hole of health and hilarity. In this knee-slapping instalment, we're joined by Professor Jonathan Sackier, as a surgeon, and by his own admission, “always certain, sometimes right” and Doctor Nigel Guest, whose laugh is as infectious as the common cold but, thankfully, much more delightful. They reminisce about the days when "online" meant you were literally standing in a line, waiting to see the doctor. Is Google your friend? Our duo tackles the phenomenon of Dr. Google and how a simple online search can turn a mild headache into a self-diagnosed case of "I've only got two weeks to live!" They share tales of patients who, armed with a sprinkle of internet articles, fancied themselves as modern-day medical mavericks, only to realise that "DIY toenail surgery" isn't a recommended pastime. But it's not all fun and games; they also get serious, debunking vaccination myths and stress the importance of not falling for the old "I read it on the internet, so it must be true" routine. Jonathan explores the educational role of online videos, and the dangers of the wrong audience watching and acting upon the material. They also dissect the portrayal of medical conditions in the media, which present a distorted view that's far from the truth.Professor Sackier and Doctor Guest urge their listeners to always seek the advice of real-life, flesh-and-blood professionals when it comes to medical matters. Because, as they wisely point out, the only thing you should be diagnosing yourself with online is a case of the giggles from listening to their podcast. So, strap on your stethoscopes and prepare for a dose of education and entertainment that's sure to raise your heart rate—in the best way possible!—--DISCLAIMER: The views and opinions expressed on Join the Docs are those of Dr. Nigel Guest, Jonathan Sackier and other people on our show. “Self-medication, sometime called do-it-yourself (DIY) medicine, is a human behavior in which an individual uses a substance or any exogenous influence to self-administer treatment for physical or psychological conditions, for example headaches or fatigue. The substances most widely used in self-medication are over-the-counter drugs and dietary supplements, which are used to treat common health issues at home. These do not require a doctor's prescription to obtain and, in some countries, are available in supermarkets and convenience stores.[1] The field of psychology surrounding the use of psychoactive drugs is often specifically in relation to the use of recreational drugs, alcohol, comfort food, and other forms of behavior to alleviate symptoms of mental distress, stress and anxiety,[2] including mental illnesses or psychological trauma.[3][4] Such treatment may cause serious detriment to physical and mental health if motivated by addictive mechanisms.[5] In postsecondary (university and college) students, self-medication with "study drugs" such as Adderall, Ritalin, and Concerta has been widely reported and discussed in literature.[5] Products are marketed by manufacturers as useful for self-medication, sometimes on the basis of questionable evidence. Claims that nicotine has medicinal value have been used to market cigarettes as self-administered medicines. These claims have been criticized as inaccurate by independent researchers.[6][7] Unverified and unregulated third-party health claims are used to market dietary supplements.[8] Self-medication is often seen as gaining personal independence from established medicine,[9] and it can be seen as a human right, implicit in, or closely related to the right to refuse professional medical treatment.[10] Self-medication can cause unintentional self-harm.[11] Self-medication with antibiotics has been identified as one of the primary reasons for the evolution of antimicrobial resistance.[12] Sometimes self-medication or DIY medicine occurs because patients disagree with a doctor's interpretation of their condition,[13] to access experimental therapies that are not available to the public,[14][15] or because of legal bans on healthcare, as in the case of some transgender people[16] or women seeking self-induced abortion.[17] Other reasons for relying on DIY medical care is to avoid health care prices in the United States[18] and anarchist beliefs.[19]” -Wikipedia --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

Finding clarity and taking action can lead to positive change in life.Choosing to do something differently is key to creating a different outcome.Addressing the root cause of challenges is more effective than focusing on external solutions.Taking it easy on oneself, making mistakes, and having faith in the future are important aspects of personal growth.Chapters:(00:00) Introduction and Personal Experiences with Feeling Lost(03:22) Feeling Lost in Life and Uncertainty(07:13) Family Pressure and Comparisons(11:17) Dealing with Family Expectations(16:10) Coping Mechanisms and Self-Medication(23:43) Expectations of the Younger Self(27:06) Living Life One Day at a Time(31:03) Imaginary Arguments and Overthinking(35:19) Dealing with Failure and Bouncing Back(42:10) Accepting Uncertainty and Embracing Challenges(45:21) Practicing Self-Compassion and Letting Go of Self-Punishment(49:13) Feeling Worthy and Deserving of Good Things(49:44) Symbolism of Tattoos and Finding Direction(50:14) Finding Clarity and Taking Action(51:01) Choosing to Do Something Differently(52:53) Addressing the Root Cause(54:02) Figuring It Out and Taking It Easy(55:19) Having Faith and Believing in the FutureListen to Part One Here:https://pod.link/1281106545/episode/c1f44610ba1a10bfa2c078e488894ab9Follow Me on Social Media:https://www.instagram.com/thevoncastshow/https://www.instagram.com/shibavon/ https://www.tiktok.com/@wowshibavonJule Kim Links:Jule Kim Life Coach WebsiteInstagramTiktok

I believe those who abuse substances are energy sensitive, and if you grew up in a home where a parent abused substances, you are also energy sensitive. The power of spiritual healing & meditation can help alleviate this codependency - if one is willing. Some of the most powerful healers I know have conquered these vices. It's possible for anyone to overcome, heal & reclaim their lives.
