UPCOMING EVENT: Access Louisville Live presented by Baird. Be on hand for a live recording of the Access Louisville podcast April 22. Details and registration here.A new pizza joint, a French Bistro and the latest on the brewing scene. All of the above are topics on this week's Access Louisville podcast. LBF Restaurant reporter Michael L. Jones is on the show to tell us about a new St. Matthews Pizza joint, Pizza Jones (no relation.) Pizza Jones will be located at 126 Breckenridge Lane, next to the China 1 restaurant, and is scheduled to open in early May. Gene Stein, co-owner of Pizza Jones, is the former co-owner of the defunct Pizza Guy brand, which closed nearly two decades ago.Jones also tells us about French bistro M. Peppers, which opened at 1306 Bardstown Road, inside the Bellwether Hotel, opened Tuesday, April 15. It comes from the team behind bar Vetti inside NuLu's AC Hotel. The ownership group includes chef Andrew McCabe and restaurateur Ryan Rogers, co-owner of Feast BBQ and Royals Hot Chicken. We also chat about Mashup Food Hall landing its first restaurant, the closure of the Oddbird Cafe in the Highlands and the latest trends in craft beer brewing. Brewing is still a growing business (despite troubles experienced lately by Louisville brewers) though it's not growing as fast as it was pre-pandemic, as our data showed. After the restaurant talk, we chat about music festivals — including the news that Danny Wimmer Presents, the promotor behind Bourbon & Beyond and Louder than Life, has committed to Louisville for the next 10 years. Bourbon & Beyond and Louder Than Life generated more than $33 million in local economic impact in 2024 and drew more than 300,000 attendees, booking over 60,000 hotel room nights, as Jones reported. We also chat about the recently announced lineup of The Big Stomp festival, which you can find here. Access Louisville, sponsored by Baird, is a weekly podcast from Louisville Business First. Hey everyone! We're back with an exciting new episode of “Ey Up Ellis!” and this one is all about one of our favourite bands Hope and Social! I caught up with the band at their Domino Rally all day festival to find out more about what makes them so unique. My mum and dad talk about them all the time and I love their music but I've not had a chance to see them play live before. If you caught our last episode you'll have heard me and dad discussing our dream music festival lineups and my dad picked Hope and Social for his stage so I was really excited to find out what all the fuss was about! Who are Hope and Social? Hope and Social are a wonderful band who are well-known for putting on incredible live shows and events, heavily involving people in their music and generally having a brilliant time. They've always approached things a little differently. In their previous incarnation as Four Day Hombre, they created the first ever fan funded, fan owned record label - Alamo Music, and they let people pay what they want for their music. Since evolving into Hope and Social, the band have become known for putting their fans at the center of everything they do - whether that be turning their studio into a French Bistro, recording a live track using 70 tuned wine bottles or putting on a funbus to the seaside, the band have always strived to make sure everyone has a great time. Oh and they all wear blue jackets! Why?… listen to the episode to find out! What's the Domino Rally? 13 years after putting on the Sleep Sound Garden Party, Hope and Social's Domino Rally was a summertime extravaganza of music, making, food, art, drink and fun at the wonderful Old Woollen at Sunnybank Mills in Leeds. Oh and dominoes. Lots and LOTS of dominoes! (Including human ones!) I had an amazing time and loved seeing the band play their headline set at the end. Listen to the episode to hear more about all the fun things we got up to and hear my interview with the band. You can even find out why Rich was soaking wet! Hope you like it!

This weeks guest is Shamez Amlani. Having grown up in Toronto, 19 year old Shamez got a summer job as a busser at Le Select Bistro on Queen Street West back in 1989. Little did he know this was the beginning of a lifelong career in the restaurant industry. Quickly moving into his favourite position behind the bar, he found his passion creating opportunities for strangers to meet and setting the scene in that third place - not home, not work, where one can be free. After extensive travels in Europe and a return home to hone his knowledge as waiter and bartender, Shamez re-located to Paris in '93 to start a new life. There he managed a small bar while continuing to travel and have many adventures touring with a band, pretending to be a writer, teaching English, eventually returning to Toronto in '97. He came back to Le Select as bar manager while his new life partner Maria Flawia Litwin forged a career as fashion designer and eventually contemporary artist. By the time 2000 had come around, he realized the only thing to do next was open a place of his own, so with friend and chef Mike Harrington and Maria, they opened La Palette in Kensington Market, imagining that their humble French Bistro would last a year, maybe two. Instead, the place became well entrenched in the neighbourhood and Shamez discovered a passion for community activism while helping to create Pedestrian Sundays, car-free neighbourhood celebrations where street food and live music were king. In 2005 they bought out their chef partner and continued to push the boundaries of what a restaurant could be as they laid down deeper roots in Toronto. When the lease came up for renewal, La Palette cast its net wider and opened a second, bigger and more ambitious place on Shamez's old stomping grounds of Queen West. After closing the original location, he vowed never to run two businesses at the same time again, a promise he couldn't keep. In addition to running the new place with tall ceilings, open kitchen, and a long bar, La Palette was also involved with an artist collective called Fedora Upside Down where he ran the bar and catering at legendary events that brought thousands of people together to celebrate diverse global music traditions. All of these inspirations came together with the birth of a new venue a block away, Drom Taberna in 2018. It was an Eastern European Tavern that was casual and affordable with live world music every day and a kitchen that stays open very late. Maria and Shamez invited some of their staff to be partners in the business with the opportunity to work off their share with sweat equity. It quickly became a staple on a street known for great bars and live music venues. Drom is as much a community centre as it is a venue, for the staff and artists that fill the space with great vibes and the public that find it to be an incredibly safe, multicultural and queer friendly space. When the pandemic hit, everyone involved with the two places was too stubborn to quit, having lived the immigrant experience which held creative problem solving and perseverance as core tenets. La Palette became a wine shop and Drom a deli and grocery store, with both places staying a moving target while navigating outdoor dining, repeated lockdowns and re-openings, and insurmountable economic and emotional hardships. Now, both places continue to be vibrant cultural hubs where you'll usually find Shamez at his favourite place behind the bar at La Palette, enjoying the buzz of a busy night, or on the dance floor by the stage at Drom. One couldn't ask for a better job, making fun for so many friends and strangers alike. This week our guest is Eric Lemonides, co-owner of Almond Restaurant & Bar and L & W Market in Bridgehampton. In his early teens, Eric was allowed to go to two places without supervision — his uncle’s restaurant, which was right downstairs, or La Gamelle, a nearby French Bistro owned by friends of his dad. At La Gamelle he would sit at the bar, eating steak frites, drinking Pepsi with a splash of red wine, and making small talk with the bartenders and regulars at the age of 13. It was on those nights that he realized how much he loved being in restaurants and that it was the restaurant world in which he would make his mark. Years later, he walked into the newly-opened Della Femina looking for a waiter position and walked away the new general manager, which became the stepping stone for his next position as general manager of F.illi Ponte in Tribeca. Following F.illi Ponte, Eric opened Pacific East in Amagansett and Chelsea, as well as the original Market in the Meatpacking District. He opened Lunch on Hudson Street in 2000 and successfully ran it until selling it in 2001 so he and childhood friend Jason Weiner could open Almond. We're looking forward to talking with Eric about his total coolness and the creative process involved in restaurants, food, entrepreneurship, and life.

Dr. Gourmet has a day job as a doctor and professor of medicine at Tulane University. And a side gig as a gourmet doctor at Tulane s revolutionary Goldring Institute for Culinary Medicine. Emmy Award winning Dr Gourmet, aka Timothy Harlan, started out working in restaurants at age 11. He opened his own French Bistro in his early 20 s, and when his wife s ill health drove him to find out more about medicine he went to med school. A number of twists and turns led Tim to Tulane University, and what used to be called a reassuring bedside manner at a time when a doctor actually sat, and much less beside your bed led Tim to media and online celebrity as Dr Gourmet, a handsome and reassuring voice of scientific reason and kitchen smarts in the cluttered media food world. The Goldring Center for Culinary Medicine is literally a revolution in the medical approach to food. Not a fad driven class at cooking school, this is a scientifically driven course at a leading medical school. The center is dedicated to teaching both doctors and the surrounding community how to think about food in tasty and healthy ways. And not just to think about it, but how to actually cook it, bake it, and make it tasty. The secret The course is taught by chefs Tim s 1, Chef Leah Sarris, is the star of the Culinary Medicine biz. Charismatic, undeniably cute, modest, unpretentious, and passionate about food as well as the rest of life s joys, Chef Leah epitomizes the joy of cooking and the glowing benefit of good health. She doesn t believe in resisting temptation, except when it comes to Nutella. On this fun and fascinating episode of Midnight Menu 1 Ray manages to get through almost an entire show without embarrassing Margo, or mentioning his hair. Well, actually, things go off the rails early on, but Dr Gourmet hasn t cooked his sense of humor out of his diet and Chef Leah almost learns to speak French.
