In our final main episode of the season, we dive into a dramatic weekend in German football as Stuttgart claim the DFB Pokal and Heidenheim secure their Bundesliga status in the relegation play-offs. Manu reflects on a whirlwind road trip across Germany, taking in matches and soaking up the culture, culminating in a remarkable final at Berlin's Olympiastadion. We break down how Stuttgart tactically dismantled Arminia Bielefeld in a 4-2 win, praise Sepp Hoeneß for salvaging the club's season, and reflect on the broader implications of Stuttgart's title win for their long-term trajectory. Then it's off to the Saarland, where Elversberg's fairytale push for promotion ended in heartbreak at the hands of a pragmatic and clinical Heidenheim side. We dissect Frank Schmidt's honest post-match reaction, credit Leo Scienza and Paul Wanner for their decisive moments, and consider what might lie ahead for both clubs. Alongside all of that, we take time to acknowledge the incredible fan culture surrounding both fixtures, Bielefeld's inspiring run to the final, and what these moments might mean for each club's future.
Maël Corboz and Isaiah Young -- two Americans from Jersey -- discuss Arminia Bielefeld's insane run beating three Bundesliga teams - including Bayer Leverkusen in the semis - to reach the DFB Pokal Cup final, plus how two kids from New Jersey ended up on the same German 3rd division club (albeit one with 2nd or even 1st tier history and fan support). Plus, a preview of Saturday's massive DFB Pokal Cup final versus Stuttgart.
In the final preview podcast of the season, Manu and Stefan sit down to discuss the coming German Cup final between Arminia Bielefeld and Stuttgart. While the lower-league minows may go into the clash in Berlin as notable underdogs, the pair breakdown Bielefeld's remarkable run through the competition and explain why “Die Arminen” will be more than a match for their Bundesliga counterparts on the day. They then move on to Stuttgart, breaking down what's gone wrong from Sebastian Hoeneß's side in the German top-flight this season and whether they can muster enough talent from their battered and bruised squad to finish the season with the ultimate piece of silverwware. Enjoy!
Herc sat down for a candid conversation with Maël Corboz, born in Alabama, who shares his remarkable journey from being a homegrown player with the New York Red Bulls to captaining Arminia Bielefeld in a stunning run to the German Cup final. He reflects on the magic of cup competitions and the differences between youth soccer in the US and Europe. Maël also discusses his experiences in College Soccer with Maryland and the responsibilities of being a captain.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Steve Crossman is joined by Guillem Balague, Julien Laurens and James Horncastle to delve into this week's top European football stories. The Arminia Bielefeld captain, Mael Corboz, joins the pod as his side shocked Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday to reach the German DFB Pokal Cup final. There's also an appearance from Max Aarons, who's on loan at Valencia from Bournemouth. He tells us about his decision to move to Spain and how he feels about his home club having such a great season. Perv.Newcastle and Liverpool played out a Keggy-esque classic, with cracking goals and violent elbows flying in all over the gaff. Elsewhere, Ruben Amorim's coup d'état was halted by Arsenal's big blokes and a host of Premier League managers are under real pressure after last night's poor performances. Welcome to the Always Bayern Chelsea show for the 52nd addition of the program. In this one we breakdown Bayern Munich's bizarre 0-1 loss to Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB Pokal Round of 16 and Chelsea's awesome 5-1 thrashing of Southhampton in the English Premiere League. We kick off the show by reviewing another early and gut-wrenching German Cup loss for the Bavarians. We discuss everything from Vincent Kompany and Xabi Alonso's coaching tactics, lineups, player performances, officiating, and yes match highlights including Manuel Neuer's perplexing ill-timed challenge and subsequent red card that altered the match as well as Bayern's spirited effort to claw their way back into the match. We even try to hand out weak match awards for this one. The lone goal of the match came from Leverkusen's Nathan Tella with an assist from Alejandro Grimaldo. So where does Bayern go from here? First things first, a battle with Heidenheim on 12/7 and then to fae off against Shakhtar in the Champions League on 12/10. We brighten up the mood by breaking down Chelsea crushing Southhampton 5-1. We look into Enzo Maresca's coaching tactics, lineups, player performances, and all the highlights from the match. As always we award match awards for this one as well. Chelsea's goals were scored by Axel Disasi, Christopher Nkunku, Noni Madueke, Cole Palmer, and Jadon Sancho. Assists were dished out by Enzo Fernandez, Noni, Joao Felix, Cristo, and Malo Gusto. Chelsea looks to carry this moment ahead to their matches against Tottenham in the EPL and Astana in the Conference league. Subscribe to the YouTube channel for more! LISTEN TO THE FULL EPISODE HERE Bayer Leverkusen suffered a comprehensive 3-0 defeat against Atalanta in the Europa League final. The loss ended Leverkusen's 51-game unbeaten streak and highlighted some tactical and selection mistakes made by coach Xabi Alonso. Leverkusen played with a lineup that didn't reflect their strengths and failed to dominate the game as they usually do. The team lacked presence in the final third and struggled to create chances. Atalanta, on the other hand, played brilliantly and capitalized on Leverkusen's weaknesses. This defeat serves as a learning experience for Leverkusen and Alonso as they look to bounce back in the German Cup final.

Bayer Leverkusen are six matches from immortality. The German champions have won 39 games of their 47 played. They've drawn eight. They've lost zero. This young team led by Xabi Alonso has already won the Bundesliga, and they're in the final of the DFB-Pokal, the German Cup. They're also locked in a Europa League semifinal with Roma, two matches away from a European crown. In the end, they could go farther than Arsenal's famous Invincibles of 2004 and play an entire season—53 matches across all competitions—without defeat. It is a phenomenon.Joining the show to discuss this remarkable run is a man who's borne witness to it firsthand: Derek Rae is the lead commentator for ESPN's coverage of German football and for the Bundesliga world feed. He's also the voice of the FIFA video game series, now doing business as EAFC. We spoke Wednesday, ahead of Leverkusen's first-leg meeting with Roma, about this spectacular season for Xabi Alonso's side. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The German Cup competitions kick off the coming season this weekend with champions Bayern München and DFB-Pokal winners Leipzig playing for the Super Cup on Saturday evening, while the first round of DFB-Pokal takes place spread out over the weekend.
Nick joins Taylor for the final European football episode of the 2022/23 campaign, covering the Champions League Final, the Conference League Final, the FA Cup Final, the DFB Pokal Final, and the final matchdays for Serie A and La Liga. Our European football experts begin with an extensive analysis of the UCL Final, where Inter Milan fought fiercely but were ultimately unable to stop Manchester City from finally winning their first UCL trophy. They discuss the lineups, tactics, and performances that entailed a highly entertaining Final in Istanbul. The duo then breaks down the Conference League Final, where Fiorentina enjoyed long spells of possession but weren't clinical enough to finish off West Ham. A brilliant second half produced all the action, which ultimately concluded with a stunning Jarrod Bowen breakaway goal in the 90' to seal the Hammers' first trophy since the 1980 FA Cup. Next, the duo briefly discusses the FA Cup Final and the DFB Pokal Final, where City conquered their arch-rivals of Man United in the first-ever FA Cup Final derby and where Leipzig retained the German Cup after winning it for the first time last season. Finally, our experts examine the final matchdays in Italy and Spain, which proved to be extremely entertaining in Italy and characteristically boring in Spain. Atalanta, Roma, and Juventus battled for the two open Europa League spots while Spezia and Helles Verona fought desperately to avoid relegation. Meanwhile, Osasuna and Athletic Club Bilbao scrapped for the Conference League spot and nearly half the league fought to avoid relegation alongside Espanyol and Elche.
On the final Gegenpressing podcast of the season, Manu and Stefan break down what happened at the German Cup final, where RB Leipzig beat Eintracht Frankfurt. Are Marco Rose's team ready to take the next step and challenge for the Bundesliga next season? And what will become of the Eagles following the departure of Oliver Glasner? We also discuss the second leg of the relegation play-off, which saw Stuttgart comfortably beat HSV. What went so wrong for Hamburg and how far can their Swabian foes go next season under their exciting new head coach? All that and more on today's show!
RB Leipzig were crowned Champions of the German Cup for the second year consecutive year, thanks to an inspiring performance by Christopher Nkunku. ‘Die Roten Bullen' overcame Frankfurt by 2 unanswered goals, in yet another dominant performance. Leipzig has shown their talent throughout this season, finishing 3rd in the Bundesliga standings, and questions are being asked if they can challenge Bayern Munich for the Bundesliga Title next season. What seems like an impossible task, has been proven to be achievable, given how Borrusia Dortmund was in the title race until the final match day. The tea, with the 'yellow wall,' dropped the ball when it mattered most, but they proved that Bayern is not ‘untouchable.' Bayern Munich has had, what some might say, a season to forget. When looking at how Bayern normally performs, a single trophy is almost a failure. Bayern claimed the 2022/23 Bundesliga title on the very last match day of the season, having been in a raucous race with Fierce Rivals, Borrusia Dortmund. Thomas Tuchel and his side were quickly knocked out of all cup competitions but this allowed them to focus on winning the league, which they almost let slip. Tuchel has remained in charge as head coach, but there has been some shuffling up top. The board of directors claimed they had no choice but to fire CEO Oliver Kahn and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic and as it stands, Tuchel will be given some more time to get things right. In terms of shuffling around, some players could be set to leave, with Sadio Mane' the main player in question On the latest episode of the Bundesliga Connection, DW Sports correspondent Kres Harrington breaks down RB Leipzig's second consecutive DFB-Pokal (German Cup) viceroy thanks to a heroic performance by Chelsea FC target, Christopher Nkunku. Kres talks about the shuffle within Bayern Munich's senior management structure, which sees CEO Oliver Kahn and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic both getting the sack.
Welcome to a rather special episode of Mind Set Win. It's a slightly different version to what you're used to – we give you a full length interview with one athlete, with absolutely no interruptions.Earlier in the series we heard from former Germany and Bayern Munich footballer Mario Gómez, who ended his playing career in 2020 after spending nearly two decades as one of Europe's most admired strikers. Mario is now technical director for Red Bull Soccer and has plenty of cause for celebration after RB Leipzig's German Cup final victory in June 2023 meant they lifted the trophy for the second season in a row.Mario had much to say about the highs and lows that are inevitable in any competitive environment. And he told us how, despite setbacks, he managed to maintain confidence that the next chance would always come. But after such a long and celebrated career, Mario had so much more to say, and we thought you'd love to hear his interview in full. For more, check out www.redbull.com/mindsetwinGet in touch with us @kateplusfate, @mario

Ian and Buckets recap the weekend in soccer. The boys make picks in the Premier League, German Cup, Copa Del Ray and El Clasico second leg. But Spakenburg FC has the boys excited the most. Everything you need to know for the week ahead.
Bayern Munich regained the top spot in the table after a 4-2 victory over fierce rivals, Borrusia Dortmund, Bayern now leads the standings by a mere 2 points, with the likes of Dortmund, and Union Berlin applying the pressure. With only 4 points sporting the top 3 teams, Bayern will need to stay focused to win yet another league title. The Bavarian giants welcomed Borrusia Dortmund to the Allianz Arena in what is known as 'De Klassiker.' Bayern recently sacked Julian Nagelsmann and employed former Dortmund coach, Thomas Tuchel. Tuchel was looking to hit the ground running and he did just that. A convincing 4-2 victory over his former club but Dortmund do have themselves to blame. The first goal from Bayern came as a gift when Dortmund goalie Gregor Kobel swiped and missed the ball, allowing it to roll into the back of the net. Questions were asked about Gregor's selection, as the Swiss International recently returned from injury and then was put straight back into the first team. This error shifted the tide and Bayern Went on to dominate. As mentioned, this was Thomas Tuchel's first game in charge for Bayern which is slowly becoming a daunting task. Tuchel inherited a divided locker room which is never a good thing for a coach. Bayern left back, Ben Pavard, dedicated this victory to Julian Nagelsmann which just goes to show the animosity among the players. Tuchel has an incredibly difficult job at hand and considering how ruthless Bayern Munich can be towards coaches, he needs to keep on his toes. Bayern Munich will slowly start to feel the pressure with all of the matches coming their way. The Bundesliga record holders are facing Freiburg in the German Cup and Manchester City in the UEFA Champion league, at what point will the fatigue come into play? On the latest episode of the Bundesliga Connection, DW Sports correspondent Kres Harrington breaks down Thomas Tuchel's first game in charge and the magnitude of the role he has been handed. Kres Also speaks about the remainder of Bayern's season and how they need to stay focused and calm if they want to claim silverware. Kres speaks about the German Cup draw which has some interesting fixtures.

Under the new rules agreed to by the clubs at the start of the pandemic, the German soccer league can approve a request to call off a game if one of the teams has fewer than 15 available players, including at least one goalkeeper. Only five Bundesliga clubs escaped from the winter break without reporting any positive test results for the coronavirus: Mainz, Freiburg, Cologne, Hoffenheim and Arminia Bielefeld. The most anticipated match of the round is by far the clash between Eintracht Frankfurt vs. Dortmund. We are a bit blasé about it in our recording, but we have to admit that Borussia Mönchengladbach, very probably the best club in the world, produced a magnificent performance, a work of art and infinite beauty, a lesson to others that will stand the test of time. Bayern Munich, who have been gallavanting around Europe and Germany recently, spreading shock and awe and refusing to score less than four goals per match in the Bundesliga and Champions League, were thoroughly and comprehensively beaten, thumped, dissected, annhilated, made a laughing stock and sent home crying for Mummy in the second round of the German Cup. We were too fast, too good, too aggressive for them. From now on, they can just send the points to us in an envelope. Joshua Kimmich was on the verge of tears and forgot to whine about unfair treatment; Manuel Neuer was too distraught to claim offside after he was made to look a fool for goal 3 and nutmegged for goal 4; Thomas Müller, for once, lost his jovial demeanour and could only stammer that he had never been so humiliated in his entire career at Bayern. Aaaah, a memory to savour for all eternity, a reason to grin smugly and condescendingly the next time we meet Uli Hoeneß. Oh yes, and we also talk about three Bundesliga matches against mediocre teams that didn't go so well, too. And we preview Friday evening's match against Mainz. The Legendary Goal is also a work of art, a thunderbolt that woke us from ten years of rubbish football, that still brings tears of joy to every Moenchengladbach supporter: Marco Reus' first Bundesliga goal for the Masters of the (Football) Universe, against Mainz on 28th August 2009, an epic solo, the first of many until he succumbed to the Dark Side and joined the Forces of Evil. Marco who? So ... we thought we would be reduced to feeble attempts at scorning Marco Whatshisname for ... what was it we were angry about again? We were prepared to spit venom and spew bile after three depressing performances and subsequent humiliating defeats. We had been planning to do our own version of the BBC's "Just a minute" for all three of the last matches, except without the humour or wit. But instead, we offer you a fun-packed and fantastically entertaining podcast filled with razor-sharp analysis, breathtaking insights and lots of "I told you so"'s, with sprinkles of "as I said a couple of weeks ago", as we delve into the matches that brought victories against two German Champions League contenders: The Forces Of Evil (a.k.a. Borussia Dortmund) and the Bundesliga's hardest, most physically intimidating and unfairest team (not club), Wolfsburg. (There might have been another match since we last recorded, but we don't remember the result, and we doubt our team even turned up.) It seems as if Adi Hütter has found the magic formula to make everything click into place. Join us to find out what he did right. The Legendary Goal comes from Václav Svěrkoš, another of our frustrating, underperforming strikers, who had occasional moments of glory (in this case in the third round of the German Cup in 2003 against VfB Stuttgart) for which we still love him to death: "Svěrkoooooooooš!!!".
