Milan–San Remo Preview: The Start of Laurence Pithie's 2025 Classics Campaign

Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP It's no secret that the Spring Classics are my favourite races. I loved racing them, and I love watching them as a fan. But, in my 10th year of doing Life In The Peloton, you've heard all the stories I've got about the likes of Flanders & Roubaix; it's time for me to pass the torch. This season, I'm going to be covering the cobbles classics a little bit differently. I'm going to bring you with me inside the 2025 peloton as we follow young Kiwi up and coming classics star - Laurence Pithie. Laurence burst onto the scene last year when he won Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race in January, and went toe to toe with Van Der Poel and Pedersen at Gent Wevelgem, rounding out his classics campaign with a stellar 7th place at Roubaix.  I'm going to be chatting to Laurence before and after all the big races for the next few weeks - San Remo, Flanders, and Roubaix - to get insider information on how he's feeling, how his team are planning on tackling the races, and just how it feels to take on the superstars at the pointy end. He'll be sending me voice notes straight from the team bus straight after the finish to share his raw, unfiltered thoughts, and I can't wait to bring you along and share Laurence's 2025 classics journey with you guys.  After transferring from FDJ to Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe in the offie, Pithie is heading into this season as a co-leader with a really strong team. He'll be supported by class riders like Oier Lazkano, Gianni Moscon, Maxim Van Gils, Danny Van Poppel, Jordi Meeus, and heaps more - plus he'll have the wise words of Bernie Eisel and my old mate Heinrich Haussler down the radio from back in the team car; Bora really aren't messing around at the classics this year, and Laurence is a rider they believe can go all the way and knock out a big result. Fresh off an altitude training camp and a delayed start to his 2025 classics campaign, Laurence is about to kick things off at Milan San Remo, so I spoke to him to kick off this mini series and get his initial thoughts on the Spring Classics in 2025. A lot has changed since I retired, and these races are almost unrecognisable to me now, so it's great to see them through the eyes of a fresh, young, motivated rider with a real shot of winning BIG this season. Guys, I hope you enjoy part 1 of this series. I can't wait to bring you more from our man Laurence over the next few weeks. Hopefully, you'll join me in really rooting for the young Kiwi after listening to this. And Laurence; go and get it buddy. We're all behind you.  Cheers! On this episode of the Nonsense Podcast, we kick things off with a wild new segment: "Which hip-hop artist would you call for homework help?" The choices—Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, or Tyler, the Creator—spark a hilarious debate about intelligence, life skills, and who's really got the brains behind the bars. Then, it's time for our 2024 Spotify Wrapped breakdown. We reflect on how our music tastes have evolved, the artists that never left rotation, and FNBob's relentless campaign to get Henvincible to give Lupe Fiasco a shot. But you know it wouldn't be a Nonsense episode without a little friendly competition. We put other podcasts on notice, debating who we could out-funny in a head-to-head comedy clash. “The reality is that we are responsible for creating a culture of safety together for everybody in the clinical area. We have to think not only about ourselves and our personal risk, but how exposure to these hazardous drugs persists in the work environment for everybody. And we have to be part of the solution for everybody, even if it's not something that we're personally really worried about being exposed to,” AnnMarie Walton, PhD, MPH, RN, OCN®, CHES, FAAN, associate professor at Duke University School of Nursing in Durham, NC, told Lenise Taylor, MN, RN, AOCNS®, BMTCN®, oncology clinical specialist at ONS, during a conversation about updates to the fourth edition of Safe Handling of Hazardous Drugs, one of ONS's book publications. Highlights From This Episode “We know that this book is used in practice sites across the country and increasingly around the world, and we have the privilege of answering lots of questions of ONS's members routinely. And we've also been part of writing guidance documents for ONS. And so, we utilized, as well, some of those questions that have come to us, and we know what people want to know more about. So we've made sure that we've developed a book that would be the most helpful in clinical practice settings.” TS 2:42 “We ensured that the book was in alignment with all of the most recent organizational position statements, standards, and recommendations. And there have been some big ones between the publication of the third and fourth book. So USP 800 is one that everyone knows about, and that became enforceable in November of 2023. … The ONS/HOPA [Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association] position statement, which was most recently updated in 2022, was also folded into this book. NIOSH [National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health] came out with two new guidance documents in 2023, and I had the opportunity to serve as a reviewer on one and a contributor to the other. Those two NIOSH guidelines have been folded into this book And then the ONS Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy Guidelines and Recommendations for Practice, which MiKaela Olsen was a lead editor on and I was an author for, have also been folded into this text.” TS 7:01 “We've understood the NIOSH hierarchy of controls for years, and if we look at that hierarchy, it tells us that PPE is important but also the least effective when it comes to controlling exposure. And what's slightly more effective is administrative controls, which are things like changes in our practices, more education, and training. And then even more powerful than administrative controls are engineering controls, and these are your closed-system transfer devices, for example, that are really important in minimizing exposure.” TS 10:31 “[Toilet pluming] is a place that I, for better or worse, spend a lot of time. And I have a colleague, Tom Connor from NIH [National Institutes of Health], who likes to joke when people ask him about his work. He says, ‘Oh, it's in the toilet.' And so I'm going to steal that from him and say a lot of my research is in the toilet, too.” TS 13:16 “I feel like people don't know how contaminated toilets are and how contaminated floors are. And I've already told you my tip about leaving your work shoes outside. But I think if people were more aware that the toilets and the floors are often the most contaminated places on a unit, there would be more attention paid to people who are coming into contact with those surfaces and bear a lot of the exposure risk.” TS 22:51

On Thanksgiving weekend, an essay started circulating — and it was an essay that I felt like I'd been waiting a long time to read. The essay explores a troubling trend: a renewed skepticism of interracial relationships, and, indeed, of interracial families. Its author is a white man, married to a Black woman. And while progressives had applauded their wedding back in 2007, he writes that it now felt as if he no longer had the right to parent his own children.Paul Kix is an American journalist, and the author of You Have to Be Prepared to Die Before You Can Begin to Live. StellaPro Reflex S Light Update

Back in June I did a review of the StellaPro Reflex line of lights titled "Is This My New Favorite Light?". Well, today I've got an update. StellaPro has upgraded the hardware. The StellaPro Reflex lights are “Continuous Strobe Hybrid” LED lights. They allow you to do constant light, as you might do for video, or using digital burst mode you can use the lights like you would a flash. Technically, these are not flashes, they are LED lights, but they allow you to over-charge the LED and release all of that charge as a burst of light, a burst that can be up to 1 stop brighter than the constant light. And that constant light isn't just some weak modeling light, like you might have in a standard studio monolight. These are bright, very bright. After doing that deep dive review I was impressed. I mean, no product is everything we want, and there's definitely a wishlist I have in my head for these lights, but for me the pros outweighed the cons. And now StellaPro has made some interesting changes... First, they consolidated the Reflex line into one model, eliminating the standard Reflex (no S), and leaving only the Reflex S. There is a Reflex Studio too, but the light head in that model is the Reflex S. Secondly, they've increased both the continuous and burst power 50%, doubled the runtime, and made the light 50% faster – now delivering 30 fps of full power bursts without missing a burst. How much more do these upgraded lights cost you ask? Well, it's not more expensive. It's not even the same price. The upgraded lights are almost $250 cheaper! It actually feels weird writing that. An already good product is made better and they charge less? What the hell is the world coming to. The StellaPro Reflex S lights are now $849, and with the added power they're a pretty damn good deal - that is if they live up to the claims. Today we are going to test this new upgraded hardware, which comes in the form of a larger battery handle, and a firmware update to the light head. The Reflex Lights I will be using in this show were sent to me by Stella Pro Lights for the purpose of that original review show back in June, and the upgraded battery handles were sent to me for the review of the upgrade. Let me be clear though, they have not paid me further and this is not a sponsored review. I am free to have and state any opinions that I have, and StellaPro doesn't get to see this show before it goes live. This is just my honest opinion based on what I might look for in a portable light. As always, If you want a crazy technical review - that's not me, but there are a lot of those out there. Here are the various sections in the show, so feel free to jump around to the areas that interest you. 00:00 - Intro 01:21 - Disclaimers 03:11 - What is the StellaPro Reflex S? 04:09 - What Changed? 04:38 - The Upgrade 06:35 - Old vs New Battery 09:11 - Updated Specs 10:58 - Testing Intro 15:16 - Black Background Tests 19:45 - Block Wall Test 20:56 - Portrait Tests Intro 21:43 - Portrait Tests 24:30 - Light Falloff Test Intro 25:21 - The Falloff Setup 25:53 - Light Falloff Tests 27:01 - Wishlist 30:57 - Final Thoughts 32:33 - Outro Join me as I take a look at the recent update to the StellaPro Lights Reflex S. In this episode of Menopause Made Easy, Dilyana was excited to be joined by Satwinder Sagoo. Satwinder or “Sat'' is a mindset master, motivational speaker, and mindset coach. In this podcast, he shares how a heartbreaking experience with a woman that he believed to be his lifelong partner, struggled with the effects of menopause to such a negative degree that it dissolved their loving relationship. Out of this experience, Sat began to understand how little both he, and most men knew about the journey that is this natural life cycle.   Alongside Dilyana Sat unpacks how through this experience he has come to understand and value the effects and experiences of menopause and has leveraged both his research and personal journey into helping others better understand this transformative process of life. Sat's sincere goal is to help couples both communicate better and cope with the barriers that are put in place during this period while hoping to save friendships, relationships, and even lives.    About Sat: An Amazon best-selling author, multiple award-winning positivity influencer, and a multiple black belt in martial arts, Sat is definitely a rare type of multi-skilled species. His book comprises many stories of resilience and determination. After his heart-breaking split from a loving woman due to Menopause Sat has combined his powers of positivity and resilience with The challenges of Menopause to bring you MENOPOWER - A positivity and resilience program for BOTH Men and Women who are traveling the journey of Menopause. It is hardly seen that a man is advocating Menopause for Men and Women. Such is the depth of his understanding he is able to tell a woman what is happening in her body during Menopause. Sat recognizes that It is the biggest transition a woman goes through, yet arguably the most unspoken. Many women and men go through painful relationship/marriage breakups and wonder "What Changed", with many unaware that Menopause happened and caused changes in a woman's personality and behavior. Happy Thursday, Limitless Family. We're going to talk about mentorship and why you need it. For 28 years of my life, I did not have a coach, a mentor, or let alone a life I felt was worth investing in. I knew myself and the thought of making an investment that I had to do the work was something didn't come close to crossing my mind. You may ask, “Clint, What Changed?” There's a point in your life where you soon realize if you continue on the path you are on, will you be able to live the life you truly desire? For me, that was the moment I woke up. I realized that by going out every weekend, spending money that I didn't have on clubs, drugs, you name it, I put it on a credit card, soon to teach me a valuable lesson. I have a very addictive personality. It doesn't matter what it is. I had to understand that I can use this to my advantage if I reprogram my habits to reflect the person I wanted to be. I started small. I made changes in my daily routine. I downloaded this new concept to me called Google Calendar and it blew my mind. Soon after, I time blocked my day from the time I wake up til the time I go to bed. I live by my calendar now, being able to be the most productive, and giving my time to the mission I have in front of me. Just those two things alone I learned from my first mentor that changed my life. When you think about, “Why should I hire someone when I can do it on my own?” The time you spend trying to figure it out will be much for effective given to someone who has it already figured out.

Ultraviolet radiation: Invisible rays of energy that come from the sun that can be harmful to humans and other lifeforms. Chlorofluorocarbons: Also known as CFCs, these long man-made molecules used to be widely used refrigerants and solvents before it was discovered that - when exposed to ultraviolet radiation - their chlorine atoms would break off and combine with ozone molecules. Smallpox: A virus that killed more than half a billion humans before being eradicated in 1980. "Sometimes in our healthcare experiences we just feel like numbers in an office, you know, running through, not getting enough time to say what we wanted to say or get our questions answered. And that's a symptom of healthcare not being human." Lane Therrell FNP-BC, MSN, RN, HTCP Clinical Education Director, mynurse.ai Do you have a primary care doctor that you love? If you do, I'm jealous. Sometimes I daydream about finding a great primary care doctor. He takes my insurance. It's easy and casual to have an appointment so I go in for little stuff. Over the years he really gets to know me and after every visit I walk out feeling really dialed in on my health. He makes sure I'm getting all the tests I need and generally nudges me toward a healthier lifestyle. In reality, I don't even really know who my primary care doctor is. They keep leaving the health system, so I basically have the equivalent of a court-appointed public defender that I've been assigned and that's the name that I put on forms. There's no real relationship there. My situation is pretty common. The Association of American Medical Colleges put out a report in 2020 that says we'll have a shortfall of 55,000 primare care doctors in the U.S. by 2033. This episode is about a company that is trying to close the shortfall of primary care doctors with software. And I think what their approach makes a lot of sense. About the Company: mynurse.ai As Clinical Team Lead at Salusive Health, a telehealth startup, Lane Therrell combines her education and experience as a nurse practitioner with her skills as an educator and coach, to manage a team of wellness coaches who support the chronic care needs of Medicare patients between office visits. mynurse.ai is digital health program helping seniors with chronic conditions live their best lives. "The average time to hire any sort of frontline healthcare worker - nationally - is 49 days. And that's by far the largest time to hire in any sort of macro industry in the United States." Charles Turner CEO, Kare (App) Today we're going to talk about Senior Housing - where do we live when we can't really live by ourselves any more? It's a really big market: Americans spend about $688 billion on senior housing services. But for a lot of people this is a scary thing to navigate. It's like the lint trap of the aging process - all the stuff you don't want to talk or think about collect in this one knotted up ball of yarn. In this episode I want to introduce you to a giant problem and one possible solution. Let's start with the problem: US Nursing Home workers turned over at mean rate of 128% in 2017 and 2018. For context - restaurant workers turn over at 17% per year. Can you even imagine trying to run a business when 128% of your workforce turns over every year? I can't. So what's going on here? Well there's obvious stuff: It's a hard job. You get paid hourly and schedules change week-to-week You don't get paid a lot - Caregivers in senior care facilities make $37,540.  If you start researching the senior housing labor statistics it gets depressing fast. I don't recommend doing this alone. To help us understand what's really going on and think about some positive solutions I want you to meet Charles Turner the founder and CEO of KARE. About Charles Turner and Kare An innovator in the senior housing space, Charles is currently the CEO of Kare, which is creating solutions to solve the labor shortage in senior care. Charles is also CEO of Invidia for Seniors, a multi platform company focused on improving the senior housing and care industry. Prior to Invidia, Charles was the President of Lifewell Senior Living and PinPoint Senior Living where he led development and operating initiatives for the companies. Invidia invests time, money and resources in technologies and programs that provide improve care and evidence based outcomes for its residents. Charles holds a B.A. in History and Politics from Wake Forest University and an M.B.A. in Finance from The University of Texas in Austin. Kare is a platform that empowers post acute caregivers to earn extra income and manage their own flexible schedules, while senior care communities decrease their operating costs by reducing high overtime wages and eliminating costly staffing agencies. If the Life Inspector (I’m sure it’s a thing!) stopped by unannounced today, would the house you’re building with your life pass inspection? I had a completely different episode in mind up until about an hour before I recorded it. But a phone call with an old friend and some kite flying with my family changed all of that.     What Changed?  I got off the phone a little while ago with a friend I hadn’t connected with in a long time. Before he was a friend, though, more than 25 years ago he was a mentor, an encourager, a believer in the future Andrew--well before I had begun to learn to believe in myself. 3 years ago, he had a mindblowing encounter with mortality...that I’m not going to tell you more about now because I’m hoping he’ll be a guest on this podcast sometime in the very near future. For now, the point is not his story but the impact that the conversation with him had on me.  When I got off the phone, I went downstairs to find that my wife had just returned from running errands and was assembling two kites she’d bought to fly with our boys.  She’s awesome.  But after the phone conversation with my friend, I immediately found myself conflicted. I could say “hi” and then head back up to my office and get back to work. Or, I could go fly kites with my family. I still had plenty of work to do. Maybe even work that on one level, I should do.  In that moment, though, I was more aware than ever of the extraordinary value of ordinary moments. Of how precious and fleeting life is. Of how I probably wouldn’t ever look back on my life and be glad that I passed on kite flying in order to crank out some more emails.  So, I went kite-flying.    Not What You Might Expect And this is where you might expect me to report to you that it was one of the most magical and delightful and carefree moments we’ve experienced as a family. That this one decision and the time we spent together in the park were life-altering game-changers. And that I recommend that you should go kite-flying--literally or figuratively--whenever you have the chance, no matter what.  But that’s not what I’m here to report, and that’s not what I’m here to recommend. It was a nice break, and it was fun flying the kites, and it was a beautiful day, and I’m glad we did it. But the boys lost interest pretty quickly, and the wind was spotty. Soon, my wife and I lost interest, too, and the moment had passed.    Two Moments  While we were still flying the kites, though, I looked over at my wife and was struck by my gratitude for her, and I walked up behind her and held her tight. Then she leaned into me, and we started talking about how moments like these were “living,” and the rest of our time is occupied with life maintenance activities--things that keep a roof on our head and food on the table and so forth. And then, how that’s really a false distinction--”living” vs. “life maintenance.” We didn’t get that train of thought much further along before everyone had fizzled and was ready to go home. The kite-flying diversion was pleasant, but those brief few moments with my wife were memorable. And then I got to walk home hand-in-hand with my 8-year-old, and along the way he told me a riddle about green glass, and I tried to solve it. When we got to our front walk, I pulled a few rogue weeds and kept working on the riddle while he plopped down in the hammock on our front porch. The kite-flying excursion was nice enough. But the precious moments with my son were beautiful.    The Big Idea Here’s the big idea I want you to chew on from this story--and surprise, even though it came out of the kite-flying experience, it’s not about the kites: Life is like a house with many rooms.  The kitchen has a purpose, the bedrooms have a purpose, the bathrooms have a purpose, the den has a purpose, the home office has a purpose, the game room with the ping pong table has a purpose, and so forth. We spend some time in each of those rooms in the course of a day for different purposes. We nourish ourselves with food prepared in the kitchen. We prepare ourselves for the day in the bathroom and visit it occasionally throughout the day when nature calls. We sleep and make love in our bedrooms. We relax and unwind in the den after a long day.  But it would be odd to spend the whole day in the bathroom. Or the whole day in the kitchen without using any other rooms. Nor would we understand a house that only had laundry rooms in it. Someone who spent all his time in the game room without visiting the kitchen or bathroom from time to time would soon find herself in a world of hurt.    What kind of house have you built with your life?  Here are some exaggerations to make the point… Is it a house full of home offices, where all of the best time and energy are given to your livelihood while your partner or kids wait for you to emerge to give them whatever scraps of you are left? It is full of game rooms, where there’s a huge emphasis on fun while the bills are stacking up unpaid in the mailbox? Are there too many bathrooms full of mirrors in your metaphorical house--where you spend too much time attempting to perfect the version of you that the world sees and not enough time actually living in the world?  I hope you’re beginning to get the point here. My kite-flying decision was a decision to spend some time in the game room with my family, so to speak. My conversation with my friend helped me make that choice in that moment instead of the choice to bang out more emails. And along the way, I had some special moments with my wife and son--both of which are now written in permanent ink in our hearts and not even Death can take away.  Then, time in the game room came to a close, and it was time for my wife and I to spend some more time in the “home office,” and my boys spent some more time in the game room--this time on devices. Because it’s summer--and summer is awesome when you’re a kid.  Next, my wife made dinner (yes, that’s our consensual arrangement--not some sexist holdover from a bygone era!), and I kept working. I’m honestly not sure what my boys did next. I’m hoping my wife knew!    We Can Feel Conflicted Because...There’s a Conflict! I mentioned earlier that when I was presented with the choice to fly kites or work more, I felt conflicted. That’s because the choice I was making was between two good and necessary rooms in my house, so to speak. There’s a tension there. On this occasion, fueled by my conversation with my friend and a fresh perspective on mortality, I decided to take a break from the home office and spend time in the game room instead. On another occasion, I might very well make the opposite choice and be equally glad I did. There’s no silver bullet here, and I’m no master at this. But, especially by tapping into the power of our Mortality, we can avoid complacency and spend quality time in each room of our house.    What to Do? Well... Don’t be a one-room kind of guy or gal. Don’t wait until retirement to step out of the office and have fun in the game room--only to find that the fun has passed you by. Don’t neglect life’s important nuts and bolts by lounging in the den too long--only to find that your literal house has been repossessed. Give each of the rooms of your house their time and their due.  OK, I think I’ve driven that metaphor to the very end of the runway. I hope you’re picking up what I’m putting down.    House Inspection Time! What room in your house is being neglected--or maybe doesn’t even exist at all? 181: New Partnership Rules

The IRS has replaced the existing rules for auditing large partnerships with a set of new, streamlined rules. So in this episode of unsuitable on Rea Radio, we sit down with Chris Axene, a principal at Rea and a partnership guru, to learn what these new rules are and how they will impact partners and partnerships going forward. So, What Changed? The significant changes to partnership audit procedures and operating agreements flew under the radar, somewhat, buried under the shadow of the tax reform act that was passed in 2018. One of the biggest changes under the new rules is that there is a designated partnership representative who has far more power and authority than the tax matters partners that existed under the old rules. So, partnerships now need to designate a representative, and if you don't, the IRS can nominate one for you. This means one person in the partnership will have, in the eyes of the IRS, more power and authority when it comes to tax matters, so that could be troubling to other members of the partnership and will require changes to the operating agreement. However, no one really knows what the practical implications of these rules mean yet, and it will likely be 2020 before we start seeing them. If you are in a business partnership or considering entering one, you will be interested in these other topics discussed in this episode: The importance of an operating agreement (& what happens when it isn't followed). What the new partnership audit rules are and how they will impact partners and partnerships going forward. How some partnerships can potentially opt out of these new rules.
