So... you think you can remake a classic horror movie. That's what Michael Bay thought, anyway, when his production shingle Platinum Dunes embarked on a new adaptation of Jay Anson's tale of mayhem on Long Island. Citizen Kane the 1979 Amityville Horror may not be, but it holds a special place in the hearts of horror fans worldwide. So who's to blame for the mess that is the 2005 version? First (and last) time director Andrew Douglas? Frequently shirtless Ryan Reynolds, miscast as axe-wielding George Lutz? Or screenwriter Scott Kosar, who picks up a surprise nomination this week for the Michael Myers Award? Whatever your take is on this misbegotten footnote in the annals of horror history, we had a blast discussing it with Gretchen McNeil, back for her 5th episode, and the second in our Amityville mini-exploration. Due to some technical issues, the quality of some of the audio is below our standards. Apologies. What's that, by the side of the road? Is that a... vomiting nun, played by star of stage and screen Irene Dailey? And what's that, up in the sewing room? Is that a... priest covered in flies, played by Oscar-winner Rod Steiger? However you feel about it, there's no question that Stuart Rosenberg's O.G. THE AMITYVILLE HORROR (1979) is an iconic launch of a never-ending franchise, one that's produced more clunkers than most—but which seems to have legs like no other. With '70s icons Margot Kidder and James Brolin along for the ride, plus plenty of ferrofluid and a requisite microfiche scene, we don't need to be told twice to GET OUT. Joining us for the first of two episodes is our pal, YA horror author extraordinaire Gretchen McNeil. Hey, who doesn't love a party? And what's better at a party than a good party game, especially one that involves grasping the hand at the end of an embalmed arm, and intoning the words, “Talk to me.” For the full effect, you say the words, “I let you in,” allowing yourself to be fully possessed by whatever lies beyond the spirit realm. It's terrifying, sure, but it's also a total rush, provided you keep it under 90 seconds. For Mia, it's a welcome distraction from a rough year. She recently lost her mum for reasons unexplained, and her bestie Jade's little brother Riley keeps tagging along with them to parties. Jade and Riley's mum is concerned the kids might be into something nasty, like pot, or booze. Little does she know, the kids are into something much worse, much more addictive, and when one of their games goes too far, all hell breaks loose, unleashing spirits best left undisturbed. After surviving a torrential Nor'easter that rips parts of his home and adjoining properties to shreds, Bridgton, Maine resident and graphic artist David Drayton, his son Billy and wife Steff notice a strange fog rolling in on the lake behind their house. After confirming that his boathouse was crushed by neighbor Brent Norton's old tree, a source of old resentments, David gathers Billy and Brent into his jeep and heads into town for supplies. Upon arrival at the local supermarket, The Food House, into which half the town seems to have crammed, it becomes apparent that the mist is no longer on the lake: in fact, it's now is at the doorstep of the supermarket. Inside the store, we meet a gaggle of characters: Ollie Weeks and Bud Brown, the store's co-managers; Mrs. Carmody, a god-fearing woman who's convinced that Man has brought shame and disgrace upon the world; feisty old Mrs. Reppler, who's not a fan of Mrs. Carmody; locals Jim, Myron, Hattie, and Ambrose; and Dan Miller, whose frantic first appearance in the store heralds the danger to come. For there are terrors lurking in The Mist, the stuff of Hieronymous Bosch nightmares, monstrous beings that make even the act of venturing outside dangerous and deadly, and perhaps portend the coming of the apocalypse. With Brenna gone, Joe and Jessica head to a secluded island party, but isn't it just our luck that the guests begin mysteriously dying? In Gretchen McNeil's contemporary (80s?) take on Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None, the characters are thinly sketched the ableism is off the charts!Plus: the sadly non-campy, ultra-cheap Lifetime adapation; why the character of Minnie is so insulting; and the silliest and most thrilling parts of the film. Amanda and Jenn discuss gothic reads, motherhood memoirs, fun sci-fi, and more in this week’s episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by Read This Book, Rebel by Marie Lu, and Soho Teen. Subscribe to the podcast via RSS, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or Stitcher. FEEDBACK Jane, Unlimited by Kristin Cashore (rec’d by Alicia) QUESTIONS 1. Hello! I am looking for a book that gives me the same feeling as The Black Tapes Podcast. Basically, a journalist gets pulled into a dark story dealing with demons that may have turned their attention to her. I read Paul Tremblay’s A Head Full of Ghosts and that was close. Really anything paranormal that’s got a reality spin could work! -Lora 2.Hello Ladies! Thank you for the show! As the fall approaches I find myself wanting to wrap up in a blanket and read something spooky. I don’t read much horror and am not even 100% sure that’s the right descriptor for what I mean. I want something to creep me out, but that doesn’t rely on body horror and excessive gore to do it. Books I’ve enjoyed in the past with this general feeling include We Have Always Lived in the Castle, the Fireman, Frankenstein, One Bloody Thing After Another, The Hellbound Heart. I did not like Bird Box or Final Girls and generally haven’t enjoyed Stephen King’s work. I don’t generally like to read true crime & I don’t think I’m looking for something that falls in the thriller category. Please no books that contain sexual assault. Thanks! -April 3.Hi! I am traveling to Prague on October 11th while I’m visiting my motherland, Poland, and I was wondering if you knew any books that are set in Prague where the city is very present. I know Lani Taylor has a trilogy set there so I would love to hear any other suggestions. Preferably adult but if the YA is great with no romance as a main plot, that would be good too. Thank you so much! -Fabiola 4. Okay, I’ve got a tough one for ya. I’ve been searching for books that have a certain atmosphere and tone. Think Rebecca or In a Lonely Place. I love dark midcentury writing and also grim gothic atmospheres. I’ve read much of Hughes’ and Highsmith’s backlists not to mention those of other authors I discovered reading the Women Crime Writers of the 1940s/50s anthologies (which I loved). I’m looking for something a little different than traditional hard boiled noir. I’m more of a psychological suspense fan. I guess I’m just in love with the quaint old time-y writing of the 40s, 50s and 60s and looking for new discoveries. Bonus points if the novel is set on dark windy coastal shores. Thank you in advance and for all the great recommendations I’ve gotten from you all in the past! -Lisa 5. Amanda and Jenn, I have been listening to the show since 2018 when I was off-work due to a work-related injury, and I listened to the entire backlist in a few months. I went on to devour All the Books, SFF Yeah!, Read or Dead, Hey YA, and their respective backlists- needless to say, I am a fan. My TBR thanks you both (as well your colleagues)! QUESTION: I am treating myself to a birthday request. After wracking my brain for what I finally wanted to ask, I decided I am looking for a traditional slasher in an isolated location; think along the lines of the “Scream” movies, and the show “Harper’s Island”. I recently read “Ten” by Gretchen McNeil, and that really scratched the itch. Anything you could suggest would be very much appreciated! BONUS: My favourite month for themed reading is October, I love all the autumn feels of doing Halloween/creepy/scary reading. Already on the list are “Rebecca” by Daphne du Maurier (with my book club), “Sawkill Girls” by Claire Legrande, “Practical Magic” by Alice Hoffman, “The Murders of Molly Southborne” by Tade Thompson. As well as potentially “Hex” by Thomas Heuvelt, and “Let the Right One In” by John Ajvide Lindqvist. Any favourites you might have for some October reading would be great, as my October reading may or may not trail into November! I wanted to share my Goodreads, but alas, it is not up-to-date. I know my question was really specific, but just for clarity, I read across all genres, but I do not particularly love historical fiction. I am also working two jobs, and recently started my Masters degree, so I don’t have a ton of time for huge tomes. Thank-you so much for the work you do, and taking my TBR and love of reading to the next level!

We talked to McNeil about what really scares her, how her performer's past influenced her writing, and being the teen with all the bad ideas.

The Forgetting (Sourcebooks Fire) Georgie's new heart saved her life...but now she's losing her mind. When Georgie Kendrick wakes up after a heart transplant she feels...different. The organ beating in her chest isn't in tune with the rest of her body. Like it still belongs to someone else. Someone with terrible memories...memories that are slowly replacing her own. Georgie discovers her heart belonged to a teenage girl who lived a rough life on the streets. Everyone thinks she committed suicide, but only Georgie knows the truth. And now Georgie has to catch a killer--before she loses herself completely. Fans of Lisa McMann and April Hentry will devour this edgy, gripping thriller with a twist readers won't see coming! Praise for The Forgetting "An eerie mystery wrapped in a heart-wrenching romance, this breathless thriller will leave you wanting more from Maggi!" - Gretchen McNeil, author of TEN and the Don't Get Mad series “From the tender moments to the thrilling climax, this one will keep your heart racing.” - Natalie D. Richards, author of Six Months Later Nicole Maggi was born in the suburbs of upstate New York, and began writing poems about unicorns and rainbows at a very early age. She detoured into acting, earned a BFA from Emerson College, and moved to NYC where she performed in lots of off-off-off-Broadway Shakespeare. After a decade of schlepping groceries on the subway, she and her husband hightailed it to sunny Los Angeles, where they now reside, surrounded by fruit trees, with their daughter and two oddball cats.

And her adorable puppy Wolfgang makes an appearance, too!
