Toast writer/editor Craig Laurance Gidney as we discuss how meeting Samuel R. Delany led to his attending the Clarion Writing Workshop, the influence of reading decadent writers such as Verlaine and Rimbaud, why he kept at trying to get published when so many of his peers stopped, the many ways flaws can sometimes make a story more interesting, our shared love of ambiguity, the reason there must be beauty entwined with horror, why he's a vibes guy rather than a plot guy, the time Tanith Lee bought him a pint and how that led to him coediting her tribute anthology, what he learned from his years editing a flash fiction magazine, and much more.

For those who might have been hoping our 2025 podcasts might get a little more focused and coherent, our apologies. Following up on several discussions on social media about how to learn about overlooked but deserving novels (mostly fantasy), we speculate on the factors that help a book or author gain and keep some sort of traction. Reprint programs like the Gollancz Masterworks or Tor Essentials might help, but we mention a handful of authors who have written wonderful work that is worth a fresh look, including Tanith Lee, Michael Bishop, Lisa Goldstein, Tim Powers, Michael Moorcock, Graham Joyce, and others. We also touch upon the notion of formula in SF and fantasy, and end with some of our current reading.

Louisa was raised in isolation in a cottage deep in the woods by a mysterious witch. It sounds like the start of a fairy tale, but this story takes twists and turns as Louisa leaves her home for the outside world. She's no princess…and this is no fairy tale. This is a Gothic tale with plenty of intrigue, led by a rather unusual heroine. Tanith Lee aka 'Mrs Menopause' joins me as a specialist to talk about the menopause with a particular focus from a man's perspective. I share my personal experience with this as my partner is going through the peri-menopause and it has been a challenging experience for both of us. I also have numerous clients going through the menopause so I have exposure to the impact on women and their life/work.As a partner of someone, you might start to notice changes your their partner and fee the effects on you and your relationship. Can we change the description of a 'symptom' to a 'signal' of what's going on - when you see these you can start to get interested in these.Tanith says that peri-menopause > menopause shouldn't be feared. If we can go into this with knowledge and compassion (rather then fear) then this is a good place to start. Stress will make the experience worse so that needs addressing. I talk about the nervous system which needs to be understood. The stress response is either 'fight' mode or flight' mode. If you feel anger can it be expressed healthily without trying to avoid it or shutting it down? we discuss this in depth. Tanith explains the common narrative is to calm everything down BUT menopausal 'rage' but we discuss this and how you can take actions to process this rather than suppressing what you're feeling. How can we communicate better? How do men deal with the difficult feelings that might come up such as rejection? We discuss all of this and provide various options you can do.And yes, we also discuss intimacy! Finally, we cover the powerful impact of exercise. The relationship with your body needs to be nurtured. Tanith explains the issues to be aware of due to hormonal changes. How you feel is the ultimate payoff and if you can find 'joy' this is such a lift. I call these moments 'Joy Lilly-Pads' to hop from between the difficult times.Get in touch with SalIf this episode has caught your attention and you wish to learn more, then please contact me. I offer a free 20 min call where we can discuss a challenge your facing and how I may be able to help you.

In today's cast we're chatting about LOVE stories! This isn't a subject we get into much but it's a huge genre so we thought we'd tackle it. We thought none of us even WORK in that genre till I belatedly realised that Banes and I sort of DO with Bottomless Waitress hahaha! There's all sorts of love in there… Sorry for the sound quality with this one I've no idea what went wrong. I'm pretty sure we all know a good love story or at least KNOW love love stories and most of us like them to some small degree, from passionate drams to romantic comedies, it's a wide genre and it real does get in everywhere. Humans, like most animals reproduce sexually and we're a highly social and cultural species so of course we've developed a lot of stuff around the stories of relationships and the imperative to procreate. Love stories of al kinds have been around since people started writing, so it's worth having a little chat about. Some of the thing we mention here (sorry, we blanked on webcomics): Pretty woman, Cinderella, Pride and Prejudice, Bridget Jones' Diary, Joe Vs the Volcano, You've got Mail, Sleepless in Seattle, and of course- Princess Bride. We're in 2021 now though and we like to imagine we've expanded the definition of “love” and relationships to things like polyamory, same sex and non-binary etc… but the truth is that these things have always been around just by different names, whether it's free love, androgyny or something else. To that end I mention ne of my fave SciFi books: Drinking Sapphire Wine and Don't Bite the Sun, both by Tanith Lee. It's a couple of SciFi stories written back in the 1970s about a genderless character who lives in a future world where everyone's needs are catered for by automatic, robotic systems, leaving people free to stay as juveniles for as long as they like. People switch bodies, genders and personalities at will. drug taking in encouraged, as is sex, but only if you enter into a formal contract. People have little robots that follow them around, hovering after them with which the can update people on their movements and share their status with all their friends and the rest of the society, gaining or losing popularity as they do. It's a very modern couple of books! And includes relationships between androgynous people. What are your fave love stories? This week Gunwallace has given us a theme to Max Jaw - Dark, mean streets. The sound echoes and roars in this dense, hard concrete jungle. It's unforgiving, raw and cynical. It knows all your secrets and it doesn't even care, it's seen it all before… you're just another anonymous face in the crowd. You won't be remembered. For this flashback episode, we were joined by Emilie of @inknotblood! We delved deep into our memories to read Wolf Tower, a fantasy YA novel by Tanith Lee. Together we discuss voice-y narrators, meandering plots, and our most embarrassing teenage diary entries. Find us on twitter: @worktitlepod
Guest host Jane Curtin offers up tales of courtship and its consequences. A couple explores their relationship in a humorous piece by A.M. Homes. “Be Mine” is performed by Sanjit De Silva and Adina Verson. And in “The Idea of Marcel,” by Marie-Helene Bertino, a breakup leads ex lovers to reboot each other. It’s performed by Jenna Ushkowitz. I was lucky enough to meet Robyn Shipton at a conference, and thrilled that she agreed to appear on my podcast. She is so creative and funny and honest – I could have talked to her all day. Our conversation veered from dreams and music to the definition of the word queer to fort building. It all makes sense. I know you’re going to love this chat as much as I did. Ready to leave the House behind and head off on an endless journey with an obnoxious prince? Wolf Tower by Tanith Lee gives us access to the thoughts of relatable, tenacious Claidi through her journal entries. She travels across the not-so-horrible-after-all Waste while ruminating on young love, the pointlessness of human rituals and her true identity. Scientific fact that green eyes are cool. Argy is legitimately the first female guest we’ve had on every single podcast we’ve ever done. That is… quite an achievement, perhaps, but at the same time… I don’t know where this is going honestly. It’s Sarcophagus, written by Tanith Lee and aired on March 3, 1980. Blake’sContinue reading →
In this Quackcast Tantz, Banes and I have a chat about the novels that influenced us when we were growing up. Each of us barely even touch on them but we do bring up some interesting titles… for Tantz it was the sexy comic Storm and the novel The gods of Foxcroft, for me it was the high fantasy of CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien, and later on SciFi by writer like Tanith Lee and her Don't bite the Sun and Drinking Sapphire Wine- both of which were very prophetic novels in the way they deal with hedonistic youth culture and the modern phenomenon of adults having extended childhoods while outsourcing more and more adult tasks to technology. What were some of your most influential novels when growing up? Folscyvio saw the Thing in a small cramped shop off the Via Silvia. In fact, he almost passed it by. He had just come from the Laguna, climbed the forty mildewy, green-velveted steps to the Ponte Louro, and crossed over to the elevated arcades of the Nuova. Then he glanced down, and spotted Giavetti, who owed him money, creeping by below through the ancient alleys. Narrated by Gabrielle De Cuir.
