The new animated series "WondLa" on Apple TV+ just came out at the end of June. Today we discuss its narrative, based on Tony DiTerlizzi's "The Search for WondLa," and discuss the animation quality, voice acting, and overall execution. Comparisons to other sci-fi works like "I Am Mother" and "Raised by Wolves" highlight common themes of artificial parenthood and environmentalism. We also touch on Skydance Animation's challenges and the impact of John Lasseter's involvement. Welcome to Today's Episode!

In this week's deep dive into the history of D&D, we talk about the origins of two iconic aspects of the game: the variety of dice and the extremely weird and specific monsters. Jake describes probability distributions, Reilly comes up with appealing backstories for creatures, and we take a brief detour into the concept of good and evil in fantasy worldbuilding. Throughout the episode we completely ignore the d10, which is the least aesthetically pleasing die shape. Here are some links that we used in research for the episode:This video from Bob World Builder summarizes the history of the dice used in D&D.This blog post shows the chits TSR shipped out during the dice shortage era. Here's the rules for Chainmail, which was a TSR combat system that used d6s.Here's a list of all the US PTO dice patents, which includes some really ambitious dice designs. This blog post from Tony Diterlizzi includes pictures and descriptions of the figurines that inspired the monsters we talked about in this episode. Also, in this episode, Jake implies that 3^8 is "about 6400". It's actually 6561. We sincerely apologize for the error and we promise to never attempt math on the fly again.Follow us wherever you get your podcasts, including Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and YouTube. Contrary to Mick's claim, time was not on our side this past week, so we had to dig into our archive for another remastered rerun. When we redid the fairly recent Erol Otus interview last time, I made a mental note to stretch further back and pluck our interview with Tony DiTerlizzi out of the mists of time. It remains one of my favorite RPG chats, public or private, and certainly deserves a second moment in the spotlight.   Original show notes from June 24, 2019: We have a very special guest this episode: illustrator Tony DiTerlizzi graced us with a full length interview. We chat about his influences, Dragon Mountain, the Monstrous Manual, Planescape, Magic the Gathering, the Spiderwick Chronicles, Hong Kong dinosaurs (you can read Tony's post on these and their influence on Dungeons & Dragons here) and so much more – and we barely scratch the surface, honestly. * * * Stu's book, Monsters, Aliens, and Holes in the Ground is up for pre-order now! Brooklyn-based fine artist Isabelle Garbani joins us again for another installment of "Art of D&D": this time, in the 1990's, the era of 2nd Edition AD&D (leading to the last gasps of TSR, and its acquisition by Wizards of the Coast). It was a time of wild experimentation with many different campaign settings: Dark Sun, Ravenloft, Spelljammer, and more. How well did the art follow that expedition, and what kinds of artistic discoveries were made possible? Featuring art by Brom, Fred Fields, Jeff Easley, Tony Diterlizzi, and more. Watch Isabelle in the scary short The Perfect Daughter Wandering DMs Paul Siegel and Dan “Delta” Collins host thoughtful discussions on D&D and other TTRPGs every week. Undervejs i episoden overvejer vi at spille Planescape med blandt andet følgende regelsystemerCypher System, FATE, Blades in the Dark, In a Wicked Age.
