In a world where magic and adventure come to life, Harry Potter fans have cast a spell of their own, creating a wave of business opportunities and immense growth. Phil Pinder and Ben Fry found a way to capture this enthusiasm for all things wizardry and created their first business, The Potions Cauldron—a place where fans can immerse themselves in the universe and enjoy an enchanting brew or 2! In June 2023, with a vision to scale, they took their business to Dragon's Den and after being offered quite possibly the largest sum to date of £200,000, they simply refused to part with a third of their company and had no choice but to turn down Peter Jones himself.  But since then, they've been busier than ever, opening wizarding golf franchises and shops across the UK. Their mystical drinks are now stocked in Hamleys, HMV, and Center Parcs, and they've landed a deal that will help them to produce a million bottles per year.  So, the real question is, how did they do it? And how did they fund their expansion and confidently find their footing without the backing and mentorship of a Dragon?  In this episode of Sound Advice, Phil tells us how they took this idea and turned it into a magical destination business.

Ice Coffee: the history of human activity in Antarctica

In 1983 Australian glaciologist Trevor Hamley joined a Soviet traverse from the Russian coastal station, Mirny, to Dome Charlie, high atop the Antarctic plateau. Bouncing about in the back of a T-55 tank converted into a living quarters/galley/dining space/lab, recording locations on audio cassette tape, wielding a hammer, and ignoring the ideological and political drivers of the cold war in the name of survival, camaraderie, and science, Trevor experienced Antarctica in a unique context at a unique point in history. His book, "Vodka in a Vegemite Jar" recounts his experiences during the preparation for and during the traverse in compelling prose that keeps one eye on the immediacy of the narrative and another on the forty year perspective 2023 affords on his time in the back of a Kharkovchanka. Introduced to Trevor by Jeff Wilson, who recounts his own Antarctic tale in episode 151, I spent an afternoon with the Hamleys after reading a galley proof copy of the manuscript. I listened intently as Trevor mapped the overall arc of the story he recounted in his text as well as the story of bringing that text together. Fortunately I remembered to press record on the Zoom H4N, so you get to listen intently, too. I am proud to bring "Vodka in a Vegemite Jar" to the attention of "Ice Coffee" listeners and I encourage them to head to https://www.trevorhamley.com/ to see what's on offer for $30 plus postage. My copy arrived in the mail today and I'm over the moon to see the finished product in its colour illustrated glory. That's going straight to the pool room.

Written as a 'love letter to Shakespeare' to celebrate her 70 years of Shakesepare and all the parts that she has played. From the extraordinary tales embedded within its pages to the intriguing process of its creation, this episode promises to engage, inspire, and fascinate. The conversation takes a deep dive into Brendan & Judi Dench's creative process, the necessity of taking mental breaks, the phenomenon of muscle memory in Shakespearean actors, and the profound power of metaphors. Not only do we delve into the mechanics of theatre but we also explore its transformative influence. Brendan highlights the commendable work of "Scene and Heard", a London-based theatre company that champions children's creativity. We discuss the role of theatre in education, how it nurtures empathy, and the impact it has in shaping a decent civilization. The conversation also covers the importance of acknowledging the unsung heroes of a theatrical production and the value of collective efforts in a successful production. But the show's not over yet! Stick around as we navigate through Brendan's unconventional stint as a ‘Fishy Santa' (!) at Hamleys, revealing the unexpected opportunities life throws at us. We also dissect the fine details that go into directing plays and the parallels drawn with parenting, cultivating an environment wherein creativity thrives. Lastly, for those grappling with the pressure of early careers, we also touch upon overcoming limitations, embracing failure, and transforming it into a stepping stone towards success. So sit back, tune in, and prepare to be transported into an enchanting world of theatre, creativity and the timeless works of Shakespeare in the extraordinarily good company of Brendan O'Hea.Tune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. What should the world's most populous country, with more than a fifth of its people aged below 10 have? A huge toy market. But despite a large customer base and deals like Reliance's purchase of toy giant Hamley's, we are still a hundredth of the global toy market. Two reasons: unorganised players account for most of the market and the organised players have always sold mostly imported toys. The government is trying to change this by stifling imports, especially from world no. 2 China, and incentivising local toy makers. Schools are encouraging toys in their curriculum, parents are looking for more educational toys and startups are rushing to fill that demand. Host Shabori Das explores the current landscape and future prospects with Ashwini Kumar of Smartivity Labs, Disha Katharani of Imagimake, and Jeswant R of Funskool India in this episode of The Morning Brief podcast.

Well, the website of JioMart with the tagline "India ki nayi dukaan" is a a new grocery shopping experience from Reliance Industries Limited, the country's most valued firm.  This in turn is expected to take on online grocery specialists- Bigbasket and Grofers, as well as global e-commerce giants Amazon and Walmart. The JioMart app can be soon soon downloaded on apple and android platforms. Currently web services of JioMart are available in the outskirts of Mumbai, in suburbs such as Navi Mumbai, Thane and Kalyan. And this will be scaled up nationally soon.  The app will not only connect consumers, but also enable kiranas to order at wholesale rates from Reliance’s cash-and-carry stores, Reliance Market, to refill their stocks. At present, the web portal is offering pre- registration discounts of Rs 3000, claims to have 50,000 plus grocery products with free home delivery and no minimum order value, no-questions-asked return policy and an express delivery promise. Reliance Retail, on Monday began sending invites to Jio telecom users for registering on the new commerce named JioMart. At RIL’s 42nd Annual General Meeting Ambani had said that Reliance Retail aims to connect as many as 30 million neighbourhood stores through the venture. He said that the main aim of new commerce is to completely transform the unorganised retail market, which accounts for 90% of India's retail industry. Reliance Retail, with 10,901 stores across the country, runs India’s largest chain of neighbourhood supermarket stores and consumer electronics stores besides being the top wholesale supplier to nation’s army of small shopkeepers. The new venture JioMart on which Reliance was working for two years, will connect local grocers through technology, an offline-to-online initiative and they will be equipped with points of sale terminals. Hamleys, the oldest and largest toy shop in the world and one of the world's best-known retailers of toys was acquired by Reliance Retail in 2019. Reliance Retail valuation is double that of Avenue Supermarts Ltd., which runs India’s biggest supermarket chain.

Series three continues with one of the world's leading brand experts, design agency founder and TEDx speaker Steve Edge, whose clients range from Cartier to the UK's leading Build to Rent operators. Steve joins Anna Clare Harper to discuss innovative branding for people and places. He shares his tips for finding your unique brand strategy and explains how the power of branding can add value to your business in the current property market. With a fascination for the arts from a young age, Steve started his career in a top London graphic studio and was soon picked to work on Star Wars and Raiders of The Lost Ark films. Steve established his own design agency over thirty-five years ago, yet his branding expertise still remains in high demand by leading names such as Cartier, Dior, Skanska, Fortnum and Mason, Hamleys, Purdey Gun and Rifle Makers, and Essential Living. Steve believes that storytelling is key to successful branding. He works closely with clients to understand what makes them unique and incorporates this into the big idea behind the design. In this episode of The Return, Steve tells us why it's important to make your brand message inspirational instead of ‘informational' in order to stand out in a crowded marketplace. He believes it's a scientific process when building a bold branding story that pushes the limits in an industry that's historically been slow to adapt to trends such as property. Whether you are selling or investing, if you're interested in finding out how to stand out from the crowd in this competitive digital world, this episode is for you. For many people their dream job or ticket out of their day job, is sitting on the boards of companies in Chairman or Non Exec Director roles. My guest for this episode is living that dream. It was an absolute pleasure to sit down with Simon Burke a few weeks ago. Simon has held senior leadership positions from early in his career and is a sought after board member for organizations across the UK and Ireland currently serving on the board of BBC, Bakkavor, Blue Diamond Group, The Co-operative Group and others. From being hired by a young, Richard Branson to run his Virgin Entertainment division and then turning around the fortunes of Hamleys toy stores, Simon’s experience at the top tier of industry spans four decades. We discuss a range of topics including how retail buried it’s head in the sand in the early days of e-commerce and how it’s playing catch up today, the history of experiential retail, the shift in the BBC's business model to compete with online content streaming services and how Simon successfully cultivated a portfolio of professional board positions for himself. Thank you Simon for inviting me to the BBC to record and for being so generous with your time. There’s plenty more I wold have liked to cover - perhaps a ‘part two’ is in order?

We received an excellent email from Jason Herron, who has found a way to make Discovery Vitality work hard for him. I have a little love affair for Discovery miles and thought now that you are using Vitality, it could be useful to you and the listeners. There is a bit of admin in getting the best Miles collection rate. You will need the following:        Discovery Credit Card         Discovery Vitality         Achieve gold status in vitality and eventually Diamond after 3 years of gold. I know having a credit card goes against the teaching of your podcast, but have a minimal limit and pay it back in full every month. When spending on the card you earn 1 mile for every R15 spent.  The key is to get to gold and spend at partner stores. You get 5x miles ie. 5 miles for every R15 spent. Then eventually Diamond  status you get 10x miles so for every R15 you spend you get 10 miles. The partner stores are very common stores that we all spend at anyway.         Dis-chem/Clicks         PicknPay/PicknPay liquor (wine for Simon)         Shell/BP         Computicket, Takealot, Ticketpro        Nando's         Exclusive Books         iStore/Incredible Connection         Hirsch's/Coricraft         BabiesRus, ToysRus, Hamleys, Reggies         Golfers Club/Pro Shop         Vida e Cafe (I know you love coffee*) The best thing about Discovery miles is they can easily be spent at most of these partners. For me, the key is to use them exclusively on travel. When you book on Kulula with Discovery and are on Diamond status, you get 35% off the flight plus an additional 10% if you pay with your Discovery card. You can also use miles to offset the  balance of the flight. There have been many a time when I've had to pay a few cents on the credit card (free flight) as you can use miles in multiples of 10 only. 10 discovery miles is worth R1.00 with Kulula. If you'd like to go international, Discovery miles can easily be converted to British Airways Avios or SAA Voyager miles on the Discovery site. Avios 1 to 1. Voyager 1.2 discovery miles per voyager mile. Also nice for upgrades. Kris *I really, really do.
