Breathing keeps us alive. We do it on autopilot. But beyond that, what I've really noticed in both myself and many of my clients is that so many of us walk around like we're holding our breath. It's been quite the start to 2022 for a local chef! Colin Hazama joins us on 'Muthaship' this week! He made us all proud in his recent debut on a cooking competition on Discovery Plus! Hazama moved up the ladder starting as a dish washer and prep cook to becoming the youngest executive chef at the Royal Hawaiian. Hazama now has his own business called C4 Table which combines fresh, locally grown produce with a mix of comfort and upscale cuisine we know and love. In 2019, she took up a post as the chief conductor of Danish Radio Big Band, following in the footsteps of Thad Jones, Bob Brookmeyer and Jim McNeely. Besides DR Big Band, Miho has worked as a conductor with Metropole Orkest and the WDR Big Band, and she is also the Associate Artistic Director of the New York Jazzharmonic. She just recorded a new album with the Danish Radio Big Band called "Imaginary Visions", which comes out on Edition Records on 24 September 2021. Miho was quarantining in Japan ahead of concert dates when we caught up after not having seen one another for nearly ten years. And the reason I say that and I come from a place of knowing is twofold. The first thing is she's probably one of my favorite clients because of the fact that she executes. And what I mean by that is like, it's not just note taking and thinking about concepts, it's literally executing. And any coach will tell you, any mentor will tell you, when you have a student, a client that puts things into action, it just builds the momentum, which is so much fun. The other side of it is one of the biggest passions I've really come to hone in on is to work with women who are transitioning careers, kind of that encore career stage, where I, for example, was incorporated for 18 years, and I made the big leap into entrepreneurship in January of 2013. And I do have quite a few clients that are pretty much in that same boat, where they are looking for that next career, right, something that is more aligned with their purpose, more aligned with who they really want to be serving and connecting with, and it's just so much fun. She has such a deep-rooted expertise around what she can do. And this really, this whole episode is just to bring to light, this whole concept of an encore career, the concept of fine-tuning your message so that you're connecting at a greater level. UPDATED 1/20/2018 - Composer Miho Hazama graduated from Kunitachi College of Music in her native Japan with a bachelorâ??s degree in classical composition and went on to get her Masters in jazz composition from the Manhattan School of Music. Miho has won numerous awards and scholarships and has written jingles for television, although her passion is writing concert works. Now based in NYC, Miho continues to record and perform her compositions, which draw on not only her jazz and classical studies but on her wide range of musical influences.

About our Interview with Composer, arranger, orchestrator and pianist, Miho Hazama joined us in the studio to talk about her path to finding her mix between classical and jazz music. Currently, she is a New York City based jazz composer traveling the world performing her music. Starting as a pianist, her early studies in electronic organ later helped her with orchestration. From the age of 7 she started to study composition and later her interest in jazz started from listening to all types of music and in college hearing a big-band in rehearsal. She shared how she learned to improvise and find a balance between classical and jazz. Her life as a performer-conductor, arranger and composer is a balance that keeps her active and always busy. Recently released, she describes her second album with her jazz chamber orchestra, which includes new instrumentation for jazz music.
