Some of the best health strategies are the most simple and basic; unfortunately, it's the simplicity that makes them easy to quickly overlook and undervalue. As much as I love reading the newest books and most up-to-date research to stay on the leading edge of wellness and longevity, I also believe that some of the most treasured information can be obtained from hidden gems from times of yore. Even some of the most prolific research on how light impacts our health originates from the 40s, 50s and 60s, thanks to John Ott (remember those solosodes, long-time listeners?!). Not to mention, some of the most reliable health and medical strategies were produced from our ancestors thousands of years ago via Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic Medicine, to name a couple. The best techniques and approaches inevitably stand the test of time.Enter Charles Atlas, "The World's Most Perfectly Developed Man," who was a veritable biohacker way back in the early 1900s — multiple generations before the term came into use. And don't worry, this episode isn't about bodybuilding or necessarily about perfecting our physique. Rather, Charles Atlas created a program in the 1920s - 1940s that consists of a dozen separate lessons where each lesson goes over various health and wellness strategies; ranging from the mental, to the physical, to diet, to the importance of "building magnetism" and much more. In today's episode, I want to go over those approaches that I felt would be interesting and relevant to you all.Charles Atlas (born Angelo Siciliano; October 30, 1892 – December 24, 1972) was an Italian-American bodybuilder, entrepreneur, and fitness pioneer. He is best known for his mail-order fitness program and for being dubbed “The World's Most Perfectly Developed Man.” Atlas claimed he was inspired to change his body after seeing statues of Greek and Roman gods at the Brooklyn Museum. His fitness philosophy emphasized health, strength, and self-confidence. Atlas is considered a pioneer in promoting fitness to the general public and is often credited with sparking the modern fitness culture. He was an advocate for a healthy diet and a clean lifestyle. In this episode of The Nutritional Therapy and Wellness Podcast, host Jamie Belz, FNTP, MHC, brings back historical audio clips from a lecture originally given by the founder of The Nutritional Therapy Association, Gray Graham. Gray discusses the optimal function of digestion in a way you've never heard it explained. Listen to this, then hit the “subscribe” button to catch the next episode where Gray explains digestive dysfunction. Many embark upon their wellness journey by cleaning up their diet. While this is a necessary step, the healthiest diet according to everyone's bioindividual needs doesn't do much good for them if they're not properly breaking down the food into molecules that can be absorbed and utilized within the body. The health of the organism is dependent upon the health of the organ systems, which are dependent upon the health of the organs, which is dependent upon the health of the tissues, which is dependent upon the health of the cells, which is dependent upon digestion. Thus, all wellness begins with digestion. 06:41 – Overview of digestion 08:59 – Digestive inputs/volume 15:42 – Six digestive functions 17:09 – Digestion is a north-to-south process – where does it begin? 20:48 – Digestion is fundamental to Nutritional Therapy 21:45 – How's it all supposed to work? – Deep dive into optimal function ________________________ Visit www.nutritionaltherapy.com/podcast or click here to record an intro or ask a question you'd like answered on the show!

Dr. Ed Group joined us from Global Healing Center to talk about colon health, healing the body through detoxification and much more! Dr. Group is the author of such books as Health Begins in the Colon, The Green Body Cleanse: How to Live Green & Live Well! as well as his ever popular book entitled Complete Colon Cleanse: The At-Home Detox Program to Restore Good Health, Boost Vitality, and Ensure Longevity. We were honored to have him back on the show today. We did a show with Dr. Group about four years ago which you can listen to by clicking here. We have to have Dr. Group on more often, not only does he have amazing products but he's a wealth of information. In today's show with Dr. Ed Group we talked about colon health and how gut health really is the first place to clean up if you want to make big progress in your health. The gut controls everything. The old saying is true..."All disease begins in the gut" LISTENER QUESTIONS ------------------------ (LIPOMAS) Hi Justin, Can you please ask Dr. Group his opinion on the cause and then the treatment (if any) for multiple lipomas in men? I had my first lipoma when I was in my early teens and then developed more in my late 20s and now I have even more in my late 30s. I would love to know his thoughts. Most doctors just say these are hereditary and happen for an unknown reason. Some research has implicated a genetic defect in cell multiplication. But why does this defect happen later in life and what could be the trigger? Some other doctors think they have to do with toxins. That the body is sequestering toxins in the fat cells and the cells are multiplying to hold ever more toxins. I believe that many more people develop Lipomas than is acknowledged. They just have smaller and fewer ones and so don't have an issue with them. Thanks for asking! Lawrence Baltimore, MD ------------------------ (HEART PALPITATIONS) I am 65 years old with Diabetes, which I take insulin for. That is the only medication I take, but I do take multiple supplements in Dr. Group's Iodine. I was diagnosed several years ago with Ventricular Tachycardia and my heart kicks in to over 200 beats per minute heart rate and all different times of the day about every 6 weeks. The only options given were drugs, which I will not do or an ablation, which seems counter intuitive as I have researched, and found it only works a certain percentage of the time. That said, these episodes last anywhere from 1-10 hours and the only way I get them to stop is through vomiting and sometimes it has to be multiple times before my heart settles back in to normal rhythms. I believe I am missing something in my diet, have tried numerous things, but so far, no success. These episodes are getting increasingly hard to endure and I am concerned that this is putting enormous stress on my heart and blood vessels. I realize this is probably more of a complex situation than can be handled in a forum such as this, but I would be grateful for any help or direction you can give me. Sincerely, Tom P -------------------------- (NO THYROID) I do have a question for Dr. Group (who I love by the way!) I would like to know how iodine works and plays a part with someone who no longs has a thyroid. I also would like to know a good dose since I don't have a thyroid. Thank you so much! I have wanted to ask him that for over a year!! #happyhealing Lisa W. -------------------------- (COLON HEALTH) Dr. Ed Group: Is the oxy powder good for a peristalsis problem? Half the time I eliminate only after two days which I know isn't normal. I consume several cups of organic vegies/juices/day and stay off sugar and most grains. Thanks. In this episode of Well Honestly, the ladies dig deep into the work of Dr Tony Hampton and uncover one of the major reasons many brown women globally aren't receiving the quality medical care that they need. What is the difference between a traditional doctor vs a functional doctor? According to the institute of functional medicine “the Functional Medicine model is an individualized, patient-centered, science-based approach that empowers patients and practitioners to work together to address the underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness. It requires a detailed understanding of each patient's genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors and leverages that data to direct personalized treatment plans that lead to improved patient outcomes.”During a traditional doctors appointment you'd meet with a physician and a few supportive medical team members to categorize your current level of health. The goal is to determine any concerning health issues and document the severity. We've all been there. You go in to see your doctor to learn about what is going on with your body and you take a few tests and leave with a new medication. The medication is usually prescribed to treat the symptoms and not the cause for the disruption of your health. That is where Functional Medicine comes in. Within this realm of treatment, the patient's health is the main priority and not the symptoms. The goal is to find the root of the problem and work as a team to restore the patient to optimal health and wellness. This is especially important during the pandemic. When breaking down why Black and brown people were impacted the most during the pandemic Dr. Hampton focused on communities of color dealing with stress, unbalanced cultural food choices, lack of sleep and even trauma. His well documented data set that allows him to outline health via the NEST model is shocking. (Featured below as ;) N is for Nutrition, which consists of whole, unprocessed foods with no sugar that are low-carb. “I tell them they can have ribs, but not with barbecue sauce.” E is for Exercise, even just walking or easy resistance exercises like pushups and squats at home. “It can be very hard to jog in some communities that are not safe.” S is for less Stress and more Sleep. “Sleep is so important to health but it can be hard to get it if you work the night shift or are under a lot of stress.” T is for “what you are Thinking” and for how you deal with Trauma in your life. “Instead of focusing on everything that is bad, look for the good, like the fact that it is a beautiful day and the sun is shining.” With the common notion that vitamin D is a game changing factor for minorities looking for preventative measures to dealing with Covid 19, Dr. Hampton pinpoints the safest levels of vitamin D consumption for most. This was pivotal information as he also mentioned that where you live can determine how long you live. It's best to know what elements your body produces naturally so that you can find ways to support your health and fill in the gaps to ensure you are functioning at your highest capacity. The aim is to be as physically , mentally and emotionally strong as possible.
