In 1957, Bill Russell and Tommy Heinsohn were rookies together on the Boston Celtics. They were both excellent players, but it was obvious to everyone that Russell was the best rookie in the league. However, Heinsohn won the Rookie of the Year award, along with a check for $300. So, how did this happen? We answer that question in today's episode.CREDITSRick Loayza: Head researcher, writer, and voiceJacob Loayza: Editor, producer, and publisher MUSIC"Happy Days" by Chuck Sims"Horizons" by Roa SPORTS HISTORY NETWORKsportshistorynetwork.comsportshistorynetwork.com/podcasts/basketball-history-101/ FACEBOOKm.facebook.com/Basketball-History-101-103801581493027/ BUSINESS CONTACTbballhistory101@gmail.com

0:00 .... Hello and welcome 0:30 ... Bruce introduces tonight's special guest ... long time NBA journalist Steve Bulpett, the original Greek Freak of the NBA family who taught Bruce the correct pronunciation of his favorite Greek delicacy "Spanakopita." 1:38 ... Opening Thoughts: Bruce moans about his miserable NCAA Tournament experience so far. 3:19 ... World B recognizes the Bulls' improvement since the All Star Break ... 5:14 ... Steve takes issue with Bruce for his attitude about the last four teams (#65-68) in the NCAA Tournament and how Dayton, Ohio is an integral part of the story. 8:48 ... Ross is not happy about Memphis' excuse for Ja Morant not returning on Monday vs Dallas. 9:59 ... Steve discusses what the Boston Celtics need to do to resume their success from earlier in the season. 15:44 ... World B takes the Celtics to task for their recent mediocre play and poor offensive inefficiency. 17:28 ... The Golden State Warriors have been a big disappointment this season and Stebve wonders if their troubles began after an incident during a preseason practice. 21:58 ... World B feels that the Warriors lack of attention to defense during road games has been their biggest issue. 24:20 ... Ross agrees with Steve and World B that the absence of Gary Payton II is a huge reason for the team's poor defense.  Ross adds that the loss of reserve guard Damion Lee has really hurt their bench. 24:56... The crew discusses the big storyline for the stretch run and it concerns Kevin Durant and the Suns.  Steve is concerned about the depth of the team. 26:56 ... Is Deandre Ayton worth the max contract he signed before the season? 31:31... Steve worries about the cohesiveness of the Suns if Durant isn't ready until the start of the playoffs. 33:53 ... Ross plays Word Association with Steve and asks him about Knicks Coach Tom Thibodeau and Celtics legend Tommy Heinsohn. 34:34 ... Steve launches into some great Heinsohn stories including several of a personal nature .... wonderful stuff for any Celtics fan to hear! 40:18 ... Ross opens a random package of basketball cards and requires Bruce, World B, and Steve to comment "off the cuff" on the players he pulls from the pack.  Steve got totally hosed with two of the cards he was asked about but still delivered!  Some of the players Ross pulled were Walker Kessler, Tyrese Maxey, Donovan Mitchell, Chris Paul, Kristaps Porzingis, DeAaron Fox, CJ McCollum, and several other good names. 53:02 ... Steve has a cool story about McCollum and why he missed some free throws in Boston earlier this season. 57:45 ... Final Thoughts: World B with some perspective on the bad blood between Dillon "The Villain" Brooks of Memphis and the Splash Brothers in Golden State ... 59:42 ... Bruce explains why his favorite player to watch during the NCAA Tournament has actually been Steven Adams of the Grizzlies in his commercial for ATT Wireless. 1:01:12 ... Steve has a great story about Cinderella team Fairleigh Dickinson and how the team was "adopted" by the University of Dayton pep band.  The FDU players never heard their fight song until it was played by another school's band. 1:02:20 ... Steve slips in a really funny John Stockton/Karl Malone  story from years ago. 1:03:33 ... Ross gives us a preview of Tuesday's matchup between the Celtics and the Sacramento Kings and slips in some betting advice ... "Take the Under!" 1:04:43 ... This week's episode of the Celtics Pride Podcast with Adam Motenko, Josh Motenko @coachmotenko and Mike Minkoff @mikeminkoffnba, the crew brings in special Guest Rich Jensen, who received rave internal reviews for his CelticsBlog article “Greatness, Glory and The Truth” about Paul Pierce's legacy in the wake of his recent NBA Hall Of Fame Induction. One commenter stated “this is one of the best articles I've ever read on celticsblog.” Go check it out and tune into this podcast, to hear where we think Paul Pierce ranks among his contemporaries of his era like Kobe, Lebron, Wade, Iverson, Vince Carter, Tracy McGrady, Reggie Miller and Grant Hill.   Rich Jensen wrote about the difference between generations of Celtics fans. “My dad had grown up with Russell and Cousy, Heinsohn and Havlicek. I grew up with Dee Brown and Reggie Lewis, Rick Fox and Brian Shaw.” Tune in to see where Rich (and his dad) would put Pierce in the rankings of Celtics lore. Like Rich's dad's Celtics, this podcast is somewhat slow-paced, but is overflowing with mystique.   “When he was a kid, my dad had a TV that probably weighed as much as a car, and the only thing that was on basketball wise was the Celtics. He grew up in a town of 200 people in South Dakota, similar to what it was like in the movie hoosiers. My dad was a fan of John Havelicek when he was at Ohio State before the Celtics even drafted him.”   Rich continues the conversation by remembering Reggie Lewis, so the Celtics PRIDE team asks Rich where he would rank Lewis - and Jayson Tatum - in comparison to Pierce. This podcast is dedicated to anyone who remembers the 1980s, and loves Celtics basketball.   Remember to rate, review, and subscribe to the Celticsblog podcast feed (“Celtics PRIDE”) and follow us on Twitter @celticspridepod, a @celticsblog podcast.  Hosts: Adam Motenko, Josh Motenko @coachmotenko and Mike Minkoff, @mikeminkoffnba  Email: at celticspridepodcast@gmail.com You can find regular episodes of the CelitcsPod and Celtics PRIDE podcasts on Apple, Spotify, Stitcher, or wherever else you listen to your podcasts.  Learn more about your ad choices. 17: Danny Heinsohn - How surviving brain cancer has created college opportunities for thousands.

At the age 23 Danny Heinsohn had what most would consider a pretty typical American life.  He was about to graduate college, had plans to take a trip abroad, and was looking forward to starting a career upon his return. That is, until he was diagnosed with brain cancer.   In a flash, all of his goals, hopes, and dreams were put on hold.  He now had to face the ultimate roadblock.  After a successful surgery that resulted in the removal of a tumor the size of a tennis ball, Danny no longer found himself an athletic 23 year. Instead, he was on the road to recovery where he had to relearn simple tasks such as talking, walking, and tying his shoes.     Fast forward 20 years later, Danny has finished an iron man, taken that trip abroad, become a nationally recognized sales coach, an author, and even started a non-profit that gives cancer survivors college scholarships.     What happens when your entire life is flipped upside down in an instant?  How do you turn a seemingly hopeless situation into a successful journey?     Lets find out.     In this episode Danny discusses: Surviving cancer is lonely, but you don't have to do it alone. Power of choice - do you live through love or do you live through fear?  Gratitude created a reason to fight. Danny didn't want to let anyone down. You have to have a vision and know that you can make it happen, even when no one else can see it.  How to leverage pain to initiate positive change.   Danny's Keynote - www.dannyheinsohnSWC.com Complimentary Sales Coaching Workshop: www.dannyheinsohnSWC.com LINKEDIN: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dannyheinsohn/  TWITTER: https://twitter.com/dannyheinsohn  INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/dannyheinsohn/

Hi, my name is Danny Heinsohn and my biggest setback became my greatest opportunity.   Upon college graduation with a bachelor of science in electrical engineering, I was diagnosed with brain cancer. After 15 months of craniotomies, seizure complications, and chemotherapy, I spiraled into depression and lost my sense of identity. I had to relearn how to walk, talk, and tie my shoes.   By the time I got back into "real life," I was broke with a mound of student debt, socially marooned and the economy entered a 2.5-year recession.   I grew up playing sports and consuming sports on traditional media but the parallels between cancer and chemotherapy with endurance sports became my new calling card and I completed my first Ironman.   My B2B sales program yields 10x growth in 3 to 6 months, while my sponsorship sales workshop helps create explosive revenue and impact for events and non-profits.   My Hometown Heroes was created to celebrate the community who supported me with compassion along my journey through brain cancer. Since 2011, My Hometown Heroes has awarded 115 scholarships to college-bound cancer survivors from across the country between 15 and 39 years old.   Over the past 2 years (2018 and 2019) My Hometown Heroes has experienced our highest growth resulting in $60,000 in scholarships awarded. Our mission is to help bridge the gap between cancer and college, one scholarship at a time.   SPEAKER WEBSITE: www.dannyheinsohn.com MY HOMETOWN HEROES SCHOLARSHIPS: www.myhometownheroes.org LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dannyheinsohn/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dannyheinsohn/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Anycjk3bZfI Twitter: https://twitter.com/dannyheinsohn --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-naked-podcaster/message Support this podcast

High & Tight 249.  I'm not lying.  If you've heard any of our shows, then you know it's probably true. In 249, Benny and RZ talk about Blade Runner, as well as the hype surrounding it. While doing so, RZ talks about how hard he butters his popcorn at the theater.  That part is "NC-17" if you know what I mean. Ben and RZ also give folks a little update about the re-release of Predator.  Guess what? It's about to be in the theater again. SWEET. Next, the boys break down the MLB playoff preview. It's October folks, so you know... It's kinda go time right now. Then Benny talks about the show Billions. Evidently it's sweet, and then Tommy Heinsohn talks about how big Aron Baynes's wang is. Evidently it's a killer piece. The boys close out with a little love for the recently departed Tom Petty. RIP.

A key member of the Boston Celtics dynasty during the 1950s and 60s, Heinsohn would win the 1957 Rookie of the year, become a six time All-Star, and was a part of eight championship teams. He’d win two more titles as head coach, and is one of a select few to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and coach. Now, for more than 30 years, he’s been one of the team’s television broadcasters. Tommy Heinsohn is a true Celtic-for-life. Photo courtesy of Getty Images
