It's April 28th, 1975 and the best basketball player in the NBA plays in Buffalo. Bob McAdoo wins the MVP for the Buffalo Braves who are in the playoffs and taking on Wes Unseld, Elvin Hayes and the Washington Bullets in a fierce series that would eventually go 7 games. One of the unsung heroes for the Braves is on the cover of Sports Illustrated from 50 years ago as he soars to the basket during game four of the Eastern Conference playoffs. The 6'6 forward had a standout college career for the Oklahoma Sooners where he was the schools 2nd all-time leading scorer and all-time leading rebounder at the time of his graduation. Playing for John McLeod at Oklahoma, Heard averaged 21.7 points and 12.5 rebounds per game in his senior year. Taken by the Supersonics in the 3rd round, Heard didn't do much in his first two years in Seattle before being traded to Chicago and then in 1973 to Buffalo… and it was there where his NBA career took off. Playing alongside McAdoo and Randy Smith, Heard did the hard work averaging a double-double in his two years and helping take the team to their first two playoff appearances… But after a successful 1974-75 season, Heard was shocked when he was dealt yet again… this time to Phoenix where he once again would play for head coach, John McLeod. The Suns were languishing in the West before Heard's arrival, but soon they took off… Playing in a league high 86 games, Heard once again averaged a double-double as the Suns made the playoffs and beat Seattle in 6 games and the defending champion Warriors in 7 with Heard once again averaging 14 points and 11 rebounds to advance to the '76 NBA Finals. Awaiting the Suns were the Celtics and with the series knotted at two games each, game 5 was played on the parquet floor in Boston… and what a game five it was. Some call it the greatest NBA playoff game ever played. In one of the craziest finishes of all-time, the Celtics took a 2-point lead with 1 second left to play in the 2nd overtime. That's when Gar Heard made the basketball version of The Shot Heard Round the World. A 20-footer over the outstretched hands of Don Nelson that hit nothing but the bottom of the net. On to the 3rd overtime it went where the luck of the Celtics Green finally prevailed and won the series in 6 games. But for one moment… one second to be more precise… Gar Heard made a shot of a lifetime. On the Past Our Prime podcast, Heard tells us all about the shot, and the technical foul Paul Westphal and the Suns took on purpose to help give them a shot… a shot Heard says was meant for him to take! Heard tells us how shocked he was to be dealt from cold and snowy Buffalo to the desert in Arizona in the middle of the 75-76 season and how Coach McLeod mentored him both in college and the pro's. Heard's career was more than just one miraculous shot and he tells us about the block he had on a young Keith Wilkes baseline jumper that helped knock off the Warriors and send the Suns to the Finals. A week after the Giants Bobby Thompson hit the Shot Heard Round the World in New York it's Gar Heard's turn to do it… this time in Boston. Just a few miles away from where the original Shot Heard Round the World took place two hundred years earlier in April of 1775. One of the greatest shots in NBA history and Heard tells us all about it on the Past Our Prime podcast. Listen and subscribe to the show for your weekly dose of sports history. I continue my series of giving thanks. I begin by talking about recent comments made by former Reds and Fox announcer Thom Brennaman. Thom lost his career when he used a homophobic slur over a "hot" mic back in 2020. Recently, Brennaman said he wouldn't change a thing about his life the past three years. It got me thinking, would I change anything about my life the past three years? That is very difficult to answer, but I am grateful I have this platform. I talk about Sean Salisbury and the life changing event he went through when he took in a homeless person. I discuss a call to my radio show from "Dan" who lost everything in the Camp Fire. I reflect back on my conversations with Paul Westphal who we lost nearly two years ago. I reminisce about my situation back in 2020 and the impact that people had on me. This holiday season reach out and make someone's life better! It doesn't take much! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Guest Sam Collins returns to the Bench, teaming with Eric Ede, in a close game against Benchwarers Josh and Markkus. The teams have fun answering David's questions, surfacing Rick Mind-flayer, Giants legend Harry Carey, Mrs. Coliseum, and even Paul Westphal, before realizing he is no longer with us. One player wants to say something inappropriate, but gives up instead. We also see Eric evolve before our eyes, trying to read questions (or at least part of them). In the end, it doesn't matter, David still gets canceled, and Mason takes abuse even though he wasn't playing. #demogorgon #mindflayer #harrycarey #mrscoliseum #paulwestphal #inappropriate #ericsevolution #readthequestion #canceled #poormason https://www.patreon.com/benchwarmerstp https://www.facebook.com/benchwarmerstp https://www.twitter.com/benchwarmerstp https://www.instagram.com/benchwarmerstp/ https://www.teepublic.com/stores/benchwarmers-trivia-podcast

We are taking it back to one of our favorite eras of hoops for this one. The Super-Sub is in the house! Ricky Sobers joins us on the podcast for an episode that true basketball fans will absolutely love and appreciate. Ricky Sobers grew up in The Bronx, NY during a very special era of basketball. He was one of the greatest players from the city to ever play on the blacktop during his time and never even played a minute of High School basketball. His love for the game and guidance from Tiny Archibald helped him continue his basketball dreams to the College of Southern Idaho and UNLV where he was coach Jerry Tarkanian's first big recruit and was the WCAC Player of the Year in 1974-75. Sobers became the 16th overall pick in the 1975 NBA Draft. He played 11 seasons in the NBA and played in the famous "Greatest Game Ever Played”.This was truly an honor. Sobers shared amazing stories about the blacktop game in NYC, Tiny Archibald, Joe Hammond, Jerry Tarkanian, UNLV, Rick Barry, Paul Westphal, Gar Heard, The Greatest Game Ever Played, raising his number 40 to the rafters and MUCH more. BIG Thanks to Ricky Sobers! We are forever grateful for the opportunity and we know you'll all love and appreciate his journey just as much as we did.Thank you Ricky Sobers!Be ready for his book titled “The Ghost of the South Bronx” Or if you would like to learn more about Crypto or his Travel Club then you can email him at his email listed at the end of the episode. You can find this episode on Apple, Spotify or any source for podcasts.Follow us on social media for news, updates and highlight reels!Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/notin.myhouse.79Instagram- @Not_in_my_house_podcastTwitter - @NOTINMYHOUSEpc

Keith is one of my favorites! Got to know him very well when he coached the Sacramento Kings. Keith made one of the great shots in NCAA history giving Indiana the National Championship over Syracuse. We talk about playing for Bobby Knight and what it was like being around Don Nelson when he was worked for the Golden State Warriors. Keith took over for Paul Westphal when he became the Kings Head Coach. I asked him about coaching DeMarcus Cousins and later about his arduous battle with skin cancer. His stories about being in the cancer ward are incredible! Keith is now an assistant coach on Eric Musselman's staff with the Arkansas Razorbacks and he shared what it's like being around such an energetic coach. I hope you enjoy listening to one of the classiest guys in the business!

The 1976 NBA Finals featured a mediocre team in the Phoenix Suns and the historic Boston Celtics. Boston, including the previous season and the first two games of these NBA Finals had won 8-straight against Phoenix. The Suns, who had gone 42-40 during the 1975-76 regular season, got on a roll. First, they downed the Seattle Supersonics 4 games to 2 and then they took out the defending NBA Champion Golden State Warriors in seven games to advance to their first Finals. Boston, meanwhile, had gone 54-28 during the regular season, defeated the Buffalo Braves in six games and the Cleveland Cavaliers in six games in the Eastern Conference Finals to setup this unlikely Finals showdown. Boston, coached by Tom Heinsohn and led by greats John Havlicek and Don Nelson, also had a terrific bench and budding star in Jojo White. The Suns were led by Paul Westphal (who was a part-time player for the Celtics the previous season), rookie Alvan Adams and the little-known Ricky Sobers. On this episode of Sports’ Forgotten Heroes, author Roger Gordon returns to the podcast. Gordon, who recently released a book about Game 5 of the 1976 Finals titled, “6.4.76 Phoenix Suns vs. Boston Celtics,” a game widely regarded as the greatest game of all-time, discusses the game and the unique controversies ( and they were unique, questionable, and looking back on it, crazy to think they could happen today) that helped make the game as legendary as it is. Additionally, we talk about six stars - and their careers - who played such pivotal roles in the game: Westphal, Adams, Sobers, White, Paul Silas and Dave Cowens. With Suns coach Earl Watson being fired after an 0-3 start, we look at the fastest firings and shortest coaching stints in NBA history on the latest episode of the Over and Back Classic NBA Podcast. We discuss Dolph Schayes being canned after one game with the 1972 Buffalo Braves, Gene Shue losing his job one year after taking the Philadelphia 76ers to the 1977 NBA Finals, Carl Bennett going from the Fort Wayne Fastpitch Softball League to coach of the Pistons, Paul Westphal feuding with DeMarcus Cousins, Jack Ramsay's final stop in Indiana, the revolving door of coaches for the St. Louis Hawks, Jerry Tarkanian's 20-game stint with the 1993 San Antonio Spurs, Lenny Wilkens taking over the 1978 Sonics from Bob Hopkins, Albert Soar finding success in three major league sports, and Bill Musselman's nightmare year in the ABA. We also dig into brief pro coaching stints for Kevin McHale, Andy Phillip, Earl Lloyd, Mike Brown, Chick Reise, John McLendon, Don Delaney, Bruce Hale, Ed Sadowski, Paul Westhead, Byron Scott, Mike Farmer, Sidney Lowe, Cotton Fitzsimmons and Roger Potter. And, as a bonus, we look at the murky origins of the Quad City DJs and our plans for an Earl Watson retrospective. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sportswriting legend Bob Ryan of the Boston Globe joins us to discuss the 1973-76 Boston Celtics in the sixth episode of the Over and Back Classic NBA podcast’s summer series — Basketball Mysteries of the 1970s. Jason Mann joins him to talk about the high and low points of a team that won two titles in three seasons and 68 games in 1973. Also discussed: how Red Auerbach was able to rebuild the Celtics after the Bill Russell era, the all-around brilliance of John Havlicek, drafting Jo Jo White and Dave Cowens, acquiring the rugged Paul Silas as a final piece, their playoff rivalry with the Knicks and their famous 7-game battle in 1973 (and Boston’s perspective on some questionable refereeing in that series), a controversial series win over Bob McAdoo’s Buffalo Braves, knocking off Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and the Bucks for a championship in 1974, running into Elvin Hayes and the Washington Bullets in 1975, what made Cowens so special as a player and his pride in being the center despite lack of size, Don Nelson’s integral role as an aging veteran, White’s sometimes contentious relationship with teammates, the Paul Westphal for Charlie Scott trade, how Don Cheney helped shore up the team’s defense, the team’s fast-breaking style, and of course their Finals victory over the Phoenix Suns in 1976, including the famous triple-overtime Game 5 with all kinds of twists and turns. Adam and Adam discuss the evolution of the Phoenix Suns. From the franchise's 1968-69 inception, through to the 1993 NBA Finals. We cover a wide range of topics. You'll soon learn why Adam is a true Phoenix Suns ‘Super Fan’. When he was a young boy, the Suns were Phoenix's only professional sports team. We chat about the 1976 season and the Suns' improbable first trip to the NBA Finals. That 1976 team was lovingly referred to as the 'Sunderella Suns'. Earlier this year, Tom Leander released a fantastic documentary - of the same name - devoted to the 40th anniversary of that iconic squad [Part I | Part II]. Our main topic of discussion, focuses on how the Suns franchise was rebuilt from the ground-up, throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s, culminating with their 1993 NBA Finals appearance. We cover some of the off-court issues that plagued the team during the 1980s, then discuss the tragic death of promising Suns center, Nick Vanos. Plus, Adam has a great story about the 1988 NBA Draft and the aftermath of the Suns selecting Dan Majerle. It wouldn't be a conversation about the Phoenix Suns, if we didn't chat about Tom Chambers' insane jam over Mark Jackson. In November, 1990, Adam sat next to photographers, near the basket support at Memorial Coliseum, to watch the visiting Chicago Bulls - who went on to win the 1991 NBA Finals - take on the Phoenix Suns. He talks about his unique view and memories of that game. The Suns continued to strengthen their roster and all the pieces fell into place, when they traded for Charles Barkley, not long after the 1992 NBA Finals. We talk about the 1993 post-season. Phoenix narrowly escaped a first-round humiliation to the eighth-seeded Los Angeles Lakers. Paul Westphal boldly predicted the Suns would win in five games, which they did. We then discuss the 1993 NBA Finals and how the Suns worked their way back into the series, after losing their first two (home) games at America West Arena. As per usual, the conversation is scattered with humor and plenty of insight. A must-listen, for die-hard NBA fans, regardless of the team you support. The most prominent players mentioned in this episode, include: Curtis Perry, Kevin Johnson, Alvan Adams, Michael Jordan, Larry Nance, Tim Perry, Cedric Ceballos, Mike D'Antoni & Steve Nash. Statistics mentioned, are often courtesy of Basketball-Reference. NBA All-Star, 11-year veteran & Slam Dunk Champion, Cedric Ceballos. Prior to delving into Cedric's on-court prowess, we talk about his love for music and the famous album, 'Basketball's Best Kept Secret', featuring Dana Barros and many others. Little-known fact: Cedric was a ball-boy at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Ceballos went on to star at Ventura College, before playing his junior and senior seasons at Cal State Fullerton - where he was scouted by Jerry West - averaging better than 22 points & 10 rebounds per game. Cedric discusses the 1990 NBA Draft, and his flurry of emotions, waiting to hear his name called. He was selected 48th overall, by the Phoenix Suns. Ced talks about his transition from college, and learning the game from veterans like Tom Chambers, Eddie Johnson & Dan Majerle. Our conversation also uncovers fascinating details behind Dee Brown's victory - punctuated by his memorable, pumping-up of the Reebok shoes, and 'Blind Dunk' - in the 1991 Slam Dunk Competition. Cedric won the 1992 contest, finishing with his famous 'Hocus Pocus' jam, dedicated to Magic Johnson. Few people know, that Cedric & Dee competed in a college dunk contest, at the Orlando All-Star Classic. 25 years later, prepare to hear the inside story that will change most of what you know about the history of the NBA's 1991 Dunk Contest. We break down the 1993 season. Paul Westphal was named as coach, the Suns traded for Charles Barkley and Cedric led the league in field-goal percentage (57.6). Phoenix steamrolled the league, en route to 62 wins and the number-one seed in the Playoffs. The Suns survived their first-round series against the upstart Lakers, with an overtime victory in the fifth and deciding game. Injury hit Cedric at the worst possible time. He broke his foot during the 1993 Western Conference Finals; missing the NBA Finals against Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and the Chicago Bulls. He talks about the emotions of supporting his team from the sidelines. We cover Cedric's trade (September, 1994) from Phoenix to the L.A. Lakers, where he enjoyed NBA-career highs in scoring, rebounds and assists. Ceballos was named an All-Star, however, an incident with Dikembe Mutombo, days prior to the 1995 All-Star Game, led to Cedric missing the game due to injury. In a cruel twist of fate, Mutombo would receive his second All-Star nod. Magic Johnson returned to the NBA during the 1996 season. Cedric talks about co-captaining the Lakers with Nick Van Exel, the impact of Magic's return and how it felt to miss the opportunity to challenge for a title, playing alongside one of the all-time greats. Cedric appeared in the iconic movie, Space Jam. We talk about his memories of the experience and the effect it continues to have on his life. He also opens up about playing basketball inside The Jordan Dome - the purpose-built workout facility, constructed for Jordan's use, during downtime around the filming of the movie. During the 1997 season, Ceballos was traded back to Phoenix - the Suns were in turmoil, but Cedric and his (new) teammates turned the season around, steering the franchise into the Playoffs. In the 1998 season, Cedric was traded to Dallas. He talks about the challenges of playing for a franchise that was fighting for relevancy. He speaks fondly of former-teammate, (Australia's) Chris Anstey and a great victory the Mavs had over the rampaging Bulls, in March of 1998. After his time with the Mavericks, he closed out his NBA career with stops in Detroit and Miami. He then played in various leagues around the USA, became a member of the Harlem Globetrotters and also headed overseas to play professionally. You can follow Cedric online. Check him out on Twitter. Learn more about his other interests, including ShootersRev and The Stream World. Thanks to Paul Corliss and the NBRPA team, for scheduling Cedric's podcast appearance. Hello, and welcome to this interview-only episode of Antic, the Atari 8-bit computer podcast. My name is Randy Kindig and I’ll be conducting the interview for this show. The interview is with Paul Westphal, a much more recent Atari vendor than Brad Koda, Bruce Carso, or Lance Rinquist that I’ve recently interviewed. Paul not only offers some hardware and software but also offers service, which is hard to come by these days. Paul is located in Portland, Oregon and the interview was conducted on November 8, 2014.
