In this illuminating episode of the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast, host Andrea Samadi sits down with Dr. Shad Helmstetter, a best-selling author renowned for his work in personal growth and self-talk. Dr. Helmstetter shares his profound insights into the science of self-talk and neuroplasticity, revealing how the language we use with ourselves can radically transform our lives. Watch our interview of YouTube here https://youtu.be/zaVGEjVj__Y Listeners will discover how Dr. Helmstetter's research connects age-old principles of success with cutting-edge neuroscience. The episode delves into practical strategies for reprogramming the brain through positive self-talk, the significance of learning the language of success, and the steps anyone can take to improve their mindset. Whether you're an educator, a parent, or simply someone seeking personal improvement, this episode offers valuable lessons on how to harness your inner dialogue for greater achievement, fulfillment, and happiness. Welcome back to SEASON 13 of The Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast, where we connect the science-based evidence behind social and emotional learning and emotional intelligence training for improved well-being, achievement, productivity and results—using what I saw as the missing link (since we weren't taught this when we were growing up in school), the application of practical neuroscience. I'm Andrea Samadi, an author, and an educator with a passion for learning and launched this podcast 6 years ago with the goal of bringing ALL the leading experts together (in one place) to help us to APPLY this research in our daily lives. On today's EPISODE #359 we will cover: ✔ Dr. Shad Helmstetter's background that led him to create an APP that teaches how to reprogram the brain with positive self-talk ✔ Where our self-talk originated from, and how we can change it, rewire our brain, and put our lives on a trajectory for success. ✔ What is the language of success vs the language of those who are deemed to fall short of their goals? ✔ How can we teach this language to ourselves, our children, students or large groups, to permanently rewire their brain for success? For today's EP #359, we meet with the best-selling author of more than twenty books in the field of personal growth, Shad Helmstetter, Ph.D. What caught my attention with our next guest was NOT this huge list of books he has written, or that he had appeared on over 1200 radio and television programs, including repeat appearances on Oprah Winfrey, ABC, NBC, CBS, and CNN News, or even that his self-talk audio programs are listened to thousands of individuals and families worldwide. There was something else that set our next guest apart from the others. What caught my attention was when I saw a passage in his book, The Power of Neuroplasticity, that described the EXACT mission or quest that I have been on, since looking back at the days I worked for motivational speaker Bob Proctor[i], and always wondered like our next guest “why do some people fail while others succeed?” I even wrote this question on the back of my first book, The Secret for Teens Revealed, and have been on a mission to connect science to these age-old principles that I have witnessed change many people's lives. We have covered Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich[ii] book on this podcast, as well as Wallace D. Wattles' The Science of Getting Rich[iii], and after looking at this question, I always came to the SAME conclusion. It HAS GOT to come down to the fact that successful people “think and act” in a certain way. So when I came across Shad Helmstetter, I wanted to learn what he has discovered that connects the age old books that we have covered on this podcast, to science. I wondered what he has discovered about “why are some people, day to day, happier, more productive, more fulfilled than others? What makes the difference? It is kismet, a kind of fate” he asks in his classic book, What to Say When You Talk to Yourself. Or has he discovered something important about the way we talk to ourselves that could possibly change the course of our lives? Let's meet Shad Helmstetter, a pioneering dean in the field of self-talk, and see what we can learn from his decades of research, that could possibly take us to NEW heights in 2025 and beyond. Welcome Dr. Helmstetter, it's an honor to meet someone who has accomplished so much in a field that I've been immersed in since the late 1990s. Thank you for being here today. INTRO Q: I've got to start how did you first get interested in self-talk and programming? Can you give us some background of where your career began? 1. We have covered self-talk before on this podcast, and ways to control those automatic negative thoughts, but can you explain what is self-talk and why is it so important? Are there certain words we shouldn't say, or think? Is there a difference in the brains of successful people compared to the brains of people who struggle or fail? I ask this question, as working in the seminar industry in the late 1990s, I saw all types of people, from all walks of life. I definitely noticed some people did things (took action) or showed me that they “thought” in a “certain way” that projected them on a pathway of success. What is the difference that you see? 1B: What are some words that can put us on a trajectory for success? What are some of the areas of life that are directly affected by our self-talk and how the brain is wired? I can guess our careers, but what else would you say? How does social media shape our self-talk, and can we override that influence through conscious effort? 1C: How do you see neuroscience being integrated in our lives, and classrooms of the future? What is the best way to listen to self-talk, and how often should you listen to it? 2: We can go deep here, but beyond our life experiences, where would you say exactly our programming comes from? 2B: How do we stop doing something we might not even be aware of? 2C: The importance of who we surround ourselves with, and ways to impact larger groups of people with positive thinking. 3. When did you first realize the importance of studying the brain with your work? What is your vision for where your work will go? Dr. Helmstetter, I want to thank you for taking the time to meet with me, and share your fascinating work that has been helping people globally for decades. Co mówić, kiedy mówisz do siebie?Do nagrania dzisiejszego odcinka zainspirowała mnie książka Shada Helmstettera "What to Say When You Talk to Yourself".Ale zostawię żarty i przejdę do sedna. Mówiąc do siebie, programujesz swój mózg. To raczej uważne i celowe kreowanie wewnętrznej narracji.Warto zobaczyć:https://youtu.be/iNyUmbmQQZgWięcej na:https://rozwojosobistydlakazdego.pl/rodk240Wesprzyj podcast na:https://patronite.pl/RODK
In this episode, we delve into the concept of how Victory Favors the Fearless, as discussed in Darrin Donnelly's book by the same name. According to Donnelly, fear is a strong, unpleasant emotion that expects something bad to happen, and it is something that we all experience at some point in our lives. However, he also notes that there is another emotion that is just as powerful, but with a much more positive outlook, and that is faith. Faith, as Donnelly defines it, is the strong, pleasant emotion that expects something good to happen. Throughout the episode, we explore the idea of how our mindset and self-talk can greatly impact our ability to overcome our fears and achieve victory. We reference the work of Dr. Shad Helmstetter in his book What to Say When You Talk to Your Self, who emphasizes the importance of positive self-talk and the role it plays in overriding our past negative programming. Helmstetter suggests that by actively engaging in positive self-talk, we can erase our negative thought patterns and replace them with new, more positive directions. As we discuss these concepts, we also highlight some real-world examples of individuals who have overcome their fears and achieved victory in their respective fields. We explore how they were able to overcome their fears, what strategies they employed, and how they ultimately achieved success. Overall, this episode serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of having faith and positive self-talk when faced with our fears. By focusing on the positive, we can overcome our fears and achieve victory in any area of our lives. So, tune in and join Coach Ashlie Walton and Detective Walton on this journey of exploring how victory truly does favor the fearless. ⩥ PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL ⩤ https://bi3xbvVont.ly/ CLICK HERE for our best-selling products: https://amzn.to/3xaG3xw and https://rdbl.co/3DIQVUC CLICK HERE to join our free Police, Fire, Military and Families Facebook Group: https://bit.ly/38w2e7r Check out our website and learn more about how you can work with LEO Warriors by going to: https://www.leowarriors.com/ Like what you hear? On episode 73 of Outside The Studio: Do you want to live an inspired life of sparkling adventure and achieve goals you never thought possible? Get started this morning! With her new book, Kristen Helmstetter and Tessa examine how starting your day right with positive affirmations can lead to manifestation with action and inspiration to get your creative endeavors in motion. Kristen Helmstetter has written more than ten books on self-talk. Her popular podcast, Coffee Self-Talk with Kristen Helmstetter, shares her formula for living an intentional life with a happy, magical mindset. Timestamps (01:45) How did Kristen's book come about? (08:50) How do we stick to a new routine? (13:10) Becoming aware of our self talk (18:35) How long does it take to establish a habit? (22:00) Thoughts on manifestation (25:03) Kirsten's journey to becoming a creative writer (30:00) Daily writing routine (34:10) Kristen's podcast origins (41:00) Kristen's bodybuilding and vegan background (45:50) What does healthy eating look like for Kristen? (51:15) Looking back on Kristen's struggles with diets Key Takeaways 1. If you wake up feeling mentally terrible at home, you're going to do the same thing away from home, even in a beautiful country like Italy, like Kristen did. She found that starting your morning with social media and emails got her fired up with negative thoughts and habits and wanted to change her mindset. Over her routine cup of coffee, she found that taking the simple five minutes to recite morning affirmations changed her behavior, rather than spending time on the news. 2. Old habits die hard. That's why adding a small addition to a morning ritual or behavior you connect to (drinking tea, cooking breakfast, showering, etc.) will be helpful in creating a new pattern that will stick. Or simply, when you mindlessly reach for the phone, reach for the affirmations instead. 3. Self talk is your inner dialogue and we may not be fully aware of how negative we're thinking. Setting a reminder, like sticky notes, to observe your thinking patterns will help you understand how positive or negative they are. Positive mindsets are imperative as they change your mood and bring a sense of happiness. Smiling and contentment attract opportunities. 4. After finding veganism and other strict diets didn't work for her family, Kristen finds that a balanced diet works best, but happily admits that she occasionally has “bad food” once in a while when she wants to. Loving herself and accepting her body is key to not obsessing over something she craves. She is aware her body is not the way it was in her twenties, not even her thirties; regardless, she loves and accepts herself wholly. You are worthy. Links No Plot? In this episode of Outer Travel, Inner Journey, Ulli and I will share our journey towards improving the passion in our relationship by being open and authentic to our sexual and erotic desires. Although happily married, we acknowledge that a good sexual relationship should excite and feel like an adventure. Most marriages, like ours, is an exclusive and monogamous one. However, we are at the point where we are looking for ways to improve our relationship and are exploring the middle ground between monogamy and polyamory. An open relationship is a taboo topic for most relationships, and we are not there yet, but we are willing to talk about it, significantly if it will add spark and passion between us. Math and physics—or ‘hard science’—can be intimidating to some (or many). Because most of the time, it is approached as abstract concepts and principles detached from reality. This area is often a space your kid may not feel too confident. But to Ulli Helmstetter, teacher of mathematics and physics, these are like lenses to see through this perfectly uncertain world. It’s the knowledge that ties us closest to understanding nature because they are nature itself. Having to tackle seemingly rigid concepts, it was easy to fall oblivious to your environment and self. No other subject could even frustrate you as mathematics. But Ulli understood these from a perspective that brings him back to the very purpose of knowledge: to be able to live in this world and live in it fully. Math and physics, in their essence, teach about the fundamental principles of nature; problem-solving and adaptation; of the truth, spirituality, and profoundness of life. And as a teacher, he took it as his mission to share this lens with his students and encourage them to re-discover the infinite magic of the world that we live in as he did when he first fell in love with science. The whole world is like a hologram. Every piece resembles the qualities of the whole. Like the tail of the elephant—you touch it and you know it's an elephant. No matter where you look if you look clearly and healthily at things, you're always connected with the truth. It doesn't matter which method you use to get or stay connected. Just like how science is—that it is not a set of information that we have and can hold in our hands. Understanding it is an infinite process as it is ever-expanding. But the basic principles are what we can hold and learn. After all, these principles, math, and physics, are just anchors to the higher intelligence that have let us thrive amid the horrors and wonders of this world! life Understanding the World of Meditation through Math and Physics The first intro to physics and spirituality was a book by Vienna Heisenbeck The Path and the Home; changed the course of my life Was in physics but the mechanic aspect but this book opened a new perspective. All the old concepts that we have of nature were completely upside down. I like to be puzzled and shocked. And this book did that to me. Mainly about the uncertainty principle. Things are uncertain. They are not clearly defined that a particle is not at one place but at different places at the same time. The world became magical again. A lot of us are dealing with the fear of possibility. It's a mission to bring this to my students. To bring an understanding of the changes in paradigm - what an open, mystical world we are in. Science is not a set of information that we have and that we know most or almost everything in the world. We hardly know anything. It's an infinite process. It's fascinating to have the feeling that we can take part in this process. People like my teaching because I'm open to what is happening - the ability to bring the magic of math physics to them. It is not a fixed system that is boring and invented by mankind. This is nature itself. No matter where you look if you look clearly and healthily at things, you're always connected with the truth. There's no escape. It's just a matter of being connected. It doesn't matter which method you use to get or stay connected. One reason we're here is to enjoy this world - to live in it and to live it fully. Is insane feeling bad or not acting according to the rule? There's an instinct, impulse, or built-in ability to adapt. To be in this world means to be in situations that can be horrible. But we are also naturally adaptable. We have a much higher intelligence that lets us comprehend and adapt to those situations. I trust with this higher intelligence. In the end, it's trust. It's not philosophy. It's trusting that intelligence. You can only give them what you have yourself. How do you change habits to make you a more whole, profound, and happier being? If you run full speed Switching gears No other subject that could frustrate you as mathematics. In Math, you reach a point As soon as you take something as the chance to take the next level, You learn how to approach problems. Math is like a lens for looking at your life. Dr. Shad Helmstetter is going to help you overcome the negativity in your life in this episode. He outlines how we are born into this world with unlimited potential. Two babies side by side in a hospital with amazing little bodies and incredible potential ahead of them. Why do some turn out living amazing lives and others do not? The answer may be with the word NO. As children we heard the word tens of thousands of times. That word was getting wired into our brain like a programmer programming a computer, our brains have been programmed. In Dr. Helmstetter's experience he heard how Olympians from East Germany were listening to messages of positive speech to help them with their goals and to overcome any negative thinking. He tried it when he decided he wanted to lose weight. Over a period of 10 weeks of listening to his own recording of self talk for 10 minutes a day while shaving, he lost 38 pounds and has not ever put it back on. Interestingly his wife listened to the same recording and she too lost significant weight. The brain does not care where you came from. It cares about your future. If you say you are terrible with names, you will be terrible with names. However change the self talk that you are great with names and watch how that little step will help.Dr. Helmstetter's books and recordings and Free Trial can be found https://shadhelmstetter.com/https://selftalkplus.com/ Be sure to connect with us in our Lead Sell Grow – The Human Experience Tribe Facebook group:https://www.facebook.com/groups/leadsellgrowDownload the FREE ebook that will help you connect with, and understand your buyers faster! In this podcast, meet Shira and Ulli-- my dear family that has come to live together in a patchwork format. And we will talk about and share how our experiences of moving (together and apart) helped us build a more open outlook in our lives. With so much clarity for a very young mind, Shira leads us to share how we are dancing between control and direction and letting ‘life happen through us’. Traveling and living in different places has been part of Shira as she grows up. She shares here how she was able to manage through that even at a young age and the things that she does to make herself feel ‘at home’. As tiring as traveling can get, Shira and Ulli share strategies to rest and settle. They also fondly recall the perks of being in a new place such as trying out new food and eventually loving what thrives in the place they are in, especially mangoes for Shira! Shira also narrates how music helps her let out every kind of emotion she is feeling. To her, music was one of her outlets and companion to get along. Music has been her friend amid the momentary loneliness of traveling to different places every so often. And part of everybody’s journey is fear. But for a very young Shira, strange as it may initially seem, her greatest fear is the internet! Here, she also talks about the internet’s dark side, the unknowns in the deep web, like the monster under the ocean while Ulli reveals his trivial stage fright. From this, the two enthusiastically delved into a deeper conversation on fear and their shared experiences which taught them more about themselves. There’s a lot to reflect upon and learn as the young Shira and Ulli give out their thoughts on fear, death, and, more importantly, on life. Ulli tells how he is amazed that Shira, even at a young age, has that clarity. She’s an alchemist! I always try to get rest with other people, to get into talk with the people around, slowly increasing my radius.” - Ulli “Shira is an earth person, she likes to ground, lie down, and feel herself. Ulli, on the other hand, likes to connect to the space around him.” -Alexandra Kreis “When I feel lonely, music is my escape. When I’m happy, sad, even angry, music is my friend. It expresses how I feel and helps me get along.” - Shira “In Ayurveda, music expresses the rasa or the juice that flows through us. It’s like the ebbing of the tide; you feel like you’re in a big ocean when you’re listening to music.” -Alexandra Kreis “I’m not afraid of dying. I don’t think of dying as me vanishing but more of the people I will leave behind. This I think is what the fear of dying really means.” - Ulli “Even at a young age, we can die any minute. But we should not think about that right now. And also not if you’re older. Don’t force yourself to think about thinks and give yourself an answer.” - Shira “Have trust. If we don’t, we often try to control things, our lives. Life happens to you.” - Ulli

Guest Introduction: Dr. Shad Helmstetter is widely considered one of the pioneering leaders in the field of self-talk. He is the best-selling author of more than twenty books in the field of personal growth, including the classic “What to Say When You Talk to Your Self,” as well as “The Power of Neuroplasticity” and the “365 Days of Positive Self-Talk” series. Shad is also the founder of The Self-Talk Institute and The Life Coach Institute. Interview Summary: In this interview, Shad begins by talking about how he got into motivational psychology and self-talk. He explains why thoughts are the number one tool for rewiring the brain. He then discusses how to identify negative self-talk, and gives several examples. Shad offers strategies to identify our self talk, including being more mindful and uncovering the roots of our fears, as well as observing how others respond and react to us. He also explains how developing the habit of self-observation leads to self-awareness, which is the first step to confidence. Next, Shad discusses how we were all born to be successful, and how over time our minds get programmed by ourselves and others. He recommends starting a daily mindfulness habit, and writing down our negative thoughts, beliefs, and feelings to become aware of them. Shad then explains how neuroplasticity works and what the left and right prefrontal cortex control. He reveals why positive thinkers grow more neurons in the left prefrontal cortex, while negative thinkers grow more neurons in the right prefontal cortex. Shad explains how the amygdala triggers the fight-flight response, and how positive self-talk helps tame this response. He then gives examples of positive self-talk, and talks about how to change our self-talk to rewire our brains. Shad reveals how long this process takes to have an impact. He gives examples of the self-talk topics he has created, and explains how to recognize what area we need to focus on. Chris also shares a story about a former client who was able to connect with people much more easily after changing his internal dialogue. Finally, Shad offers practical tips on developing a daily self-talk practice. He talks about how self-talk helps improve various aspects of our lives, such as self-esteem, health, relationships, and more. He also describes how everything is interconnected, and improving one area of our lives leads to positive changes in other areas. Shad then gives examples of what self-talk topics to focus on together, and cautions against doing too much at once. He leaves us with some insights for living happier, healthier, and more meaningful and connected lives. “We’re finding the best in ourselves and making it true.” –Shad Helmstetter Much of what we believe is programmed into us when we’re young – and then it shows up in the things we say to ourselves. Statements like “I’m always late,” or “I just can’t lose weight,” or “It’s my first year in the business; I can’t achieve success,” stem from these beliefs, which aren’t often the truth. In this episode, Brian Buffini shares one of his favorite interviews from the past – with Shad Helmstetter, Ph.D., author of What to Say When You Talk to Yourself. Dr. Helmstetter reveals his research findings and offers tips to help us turn negative self-talk into positive affirmations. You’ll learn about the five levels of self-talk, why the small decisions we make each day are determined by our automatic programming, and how not to absorb other people’s negative programming. By the end of this episode, you’ll have the tools you need to reprogram your self-talk. Inspirational quotes from today’s interview: “What we type into our keyboard will have an effect on our lives.” –Shad Helmstetter “The difference between one who succeeds in life and one who doesn’t is the person who succeeds somehow gets control of his or her programming and the other person doesn’t.” –Shad Helmstetter “Most of the choices we make today will be made by the programs that are on automatic playback.” –Shad Helmstetter “The small choices are the most important ones you’ll ever make.” –Shad Helmstetter “Anyone who gets the right new messages will build new highways.” –Shad Helmstetter “People change their opinions by changing their program.” –Shad Helmstetter “Keep in mind that everything everyone says is an opinion based on their programs.” –Shad Helmstetter “We’re finding the best in ourselves and making it true.” –Shad Helmstetter “In order to know where the self-talk ought to take me, I need to have goals.” –Shad Helmstetter “Do something now.” –Shad Helmstetter Mentioned in this episode: What to Say When You Talk to Yourself by Shad Helmstetter Connect with Brian Buffini http://www.brianbuffini.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brianbuffini Twitter: https://twitter.com/brianbuffini Love what you heard?
