Jesus did not die for the innocent victim. Here John says, "And it was night." You will never understand or appreciate the cross unless you grasp the full depth of the darkness of your night.
Today we celebrate the botanist and writer who published the first book about salad. Important Events 1662 Today the English Gardner and writer John Evelyn recorded in his diary that he met with the dowager Queen Henrietta Maria. John kept a detailed diary for 66 years, and he had a devoted passion for gardening. As a result, his diary has been a treasure for garden historians over the years. And, here's a little known fact about John Evelyn: he was the first garden author to publish a book about salads (or sallets as they were spelled at the time). Check out the benefits of eating salad as described by John: "By reason of its soporiferous quality, lettuce ... still continues [to be] the principal foundation of … Sallets, which ... cool and refresh, [and have] beneficial influences on morals, temperance, and chastity." (FYI: Soporiferous means Inducing or tending to induce sleep. Here John is referring to the fact that some lettuce secretes lactucarium - a milky fluid found in the base of the lettuce stems. It is known as lettuce opium because of its sedative and pain-relieving properties. It has also been reported to promote a mild sensation of euphoria.) It was John Evelyn who wrote: "The gardener’s work is never at an end, it begins with the year and continues to the next. He prepares the ground, and then he plants, and then he gathers the fruits." "Gardening is a labor full of tranquility and satisfaction; natural and instructive, and as such contributes to the most serious contemplation, experience, health, and longevity." And, keep in mind John's appreciation for the amount of work a garden requires as I tell you this little story about him. In 1698, John Evelyn had owned his estate for 40 years. Everyone who knew it said it was magnificent - both inside and out. It was decorated to the nines. Of all that he owned, John's garden was his pride and joy. That year, the Russian Czar, Peter the Great, brought an entourage of 200 people to England to visit William III. In a gesture of hospitality, William volunteered John Evelyn's home to host the Czar and his people during their visit. John and his wife graciously moved out to give the Czar his privacy. Well, it wasn't long before John's servants began sending him urgent messages begging him to return. When John came home, he walked into a nightmare. The whole estate had been trashed. Priceless paintings had served as dartboards. His floors were ruined, windows were smashed; even the garden was destroyed. The servants told how the 6'8 Czar had played a game with his friends, where they put him in one of John's wheelbarrows and then raced him through the garden beds, crashing into walls, trees, and hedges. It was a complete disregard for the sanctity of John's garden. For twenty years, John had nursed along a hedge of holly that had turned into a glorious living wall. It was ruined. The party even managed to knock down part of the stone wall that surrounded the garden. It must have been a scene akin to the movie Animal House. John immediately sent word to the king about what had happened, and arrangements were made straight away to move the Czar to other lodgings. King William settled with John to have his property restored - his home needed to be gutted and rebuilt from the floors up. John Evelyn was 78 years old when this happened to him. I'm sure there was no amount of restitution that could restore the years of love he had spent in his garden. He lived for another eight years before dying in 1706. 1815 Today is the anniversary of the tragic death of the horticulturist and writer Andrew Jackson Downing. Andrew was the author of The Fruits and Fruit Trees of America, which came out in 1845. He also served as the editor of a magazine called The Horticulturist. Regarded as one of the founders of American Landscape Architecture, Andrew used his work in The Horticulturist magazine as a platform for advancing his pet causes. It was Andrew who first came up with the idea for a New York park. In fact, Andrew's dream became the park we know today: Central Park. Andrew also advocated for individual states to create schools devoted to agriculture - and that hope became a reality as well. In 1846, the National Mall in Washington, DC, was run down and neglected. It fell to Andrew to devise plans to revive the space. When the Frenchman Pierre Charles L'Enfant designed the mall in 1791, he envisioned a grand avenue. In sharp contrast, Andrew's vision simple. Not a fan of formal European gardens, Andrew wanted to create what he called a public museum of living trees and shrubs. Instead of a grand avenue, Andrew designed four separate parks that were connected by curving walkways and featured many different trees. Sadly, Andrew's plans were never fully funded or carried out. In the summer of 1852, Andrew boarded a steamship called The Henry Clay. At some point, the steamship got into a race with another boat called The Armenia. When The Henry Clay began to overheat, a fire broke out in the engine room. Coincidentally, a former girlfriend of Andrew's also happened to be on board The Henry Clay that fateful day. As passengers escaped the flames to jump into the water, some began to drown. When Andrew jumped in the water to save his old flame, her panic caused them both to drown. Now, before Andrew attempted to save his old paramour, he was one of the men who quickly threw some deck chairs off the boat. The thinking was that the chairs could be used as flotation devices. As fate would have it, Andrew's wife Carolyn survived the disaster by holding on to a deck chair. When the ordeal was all over, many friends tried to comfort Carolyn by insinuating that she was likely saved by one of the chairs Andrew had thrown into the water. But this sentiment was small consolation to her, given that she lost her husband as he was busy trying to save an old love. Andrew Jackson Downing was just 36 years old when he died on this day two hundred and five years ago. 1996 Today is the anniversary of the death of Roger Tory Peterson of Peterson's Field Guide to Birds fame - he was born in 1908. A son of Jamestown, New York, Roger, helped new generations of people fall in love with ornithology. Roger not only wrote the guides, but he also illustrated them. He was the noted American naturalist who brought the natural world to the masses in the 20th century. Roger admired the gumption of the common starling. He felt blue jays had "a lot of class," and he said the house sparrow was "an interesting darn bird." Roger once famously described a purple finch as a "Sparrow dipped in raspberry juice (male)." When it came to the Audobon Oriole, Roger quipped that its song was like "a boy learning to whistle." What was Roger Tory Peterson's favorite bird? The King Penguin. Here are some famous Peterson quotes: "Few men have souls so dead that they will not bother to look up when they hear the barking of wild Geese." "Birds have wings; they're free; they can fly where they want when they want. They have the kind of mobility many people envy." "Birds are indicators of the environment. If they are in trouble, we know we'll soon be in trouble." And finally, the book, The World of Roger Tory Petersonis worth a read if you can get hold of a copy. Unearthed Words Today's words feature Women and the Garden. In January, for example, the housewife should be busy planting peas and beans and setting young rose roots. During March and April she will work 'from morning to night, sowing and setting her garden or plot,' to produce the crops of parsnip, beans, and melons which will 'winnest the heart of a laboring man for her later in the year. Her strawberry plants will be obtained from the best roots which she has gathered from the woods, and these are to be set in a plot in the garden. Berries from these plants will be harvested later the same year, perhaps a useful back-up if the parsnips have failed to win the man of her dreams. July will see the good wife 'cut off ...ripe bean with a knife as well as harvesting the hemp and flax, which it will be her responsibility to spin later in the year. — Thomas Tusser, English poet and farmer, Five Hundred Pointes of Good Husbandry, 1573 You are a tulip seen today, But (dearest) of so short a stay That where you grew, scarce man can say. You are a lovely July-flower, Yet one rude wind, or milling shower. Will force you hence, and in an hour. You are a sparkling rose in the bud. Yet lost ere that chaste flesh and blood Can show where you grew or stood. You are a full-spread fair-set vine. And can with tendrils love entwine. Yet dried, ere you distill your wine. You are like balm enclosed well In amber, or some crystal shell, Yet lost ere you transfuse your smell. You are a dainty violet. Yet withered ere you can be set Within the virgin's coronet. You are the queen all flowers among. But die you must, fair maid, ere long. As he, the maker of this song. — Robert Herrick, English poet and cleric, A Meditation for His Mistress Grow That Garden Library The Pollinator Victory Garden by Kim Eierman This book came out in January of 2020, and the subtitle is Win the War on Pollinator Decline with Ecological Gardening; Attract and Support Bees, Beetles, Butterflies, Bats, and Other Pollinators. Today's Botanic Spark 2011 In the popular gardener book The Roots of My Obsession, the former executive director of the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay, Bill Cullina wrote: “Yesterday it happened. With everything finally planted, the weeds temporarily at bay, and the garden refreshed by rains after a long dry stretch, I reached that brief apogee in the arc of the season where I could sit on the bench and just appreciate. It is that magic time of year between the rising cacophony of spring and the slow murmuring descent of autumn when there is stillness in my soul. Right now, nothing needs doing. It has been the most frenzied spring yet at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, where I work — a season stretching well into summer. We planted just over twenty-nine thousand plants and created four acres of new gardens. I have laid out so many plants this year that I started seeing them in my sleep — one pot after another plunked atop the freshly turned earth in endless triangles stretching off to infinity.” In 2019, Bill Cullina was named the F. Otto Haas Executive Director of the University of Pennsylvania's Morris Arboretum. He started his new job a year ago on July 8, succeeding Paul W. Meyer, who served the Arboretum for 43 years, 28 years as executive director.
Article 14- The Creation and Fall of Mankind--We believe that God created man from the dust of the earth and made and formed him in his image and likeness - good, just, and holy- able by his own will to conform in all things to the will of God.--But when he was in honor he did not understand it and did not recognize his excellence. But he subjected himself willingly to sin and consequently to death and the curse, lending his ear to the word of the devil. For he transgressed the commandment of life, which he had received, and by his sin he separated himself from God, who was his true life, having corrupted his entire nature.--So he made himself guilty and subject to physical and spiritual death, having become wicked, perverse, and corrupt in all his ways. He lost all his excellent gifts which he had received from God, and he retained none of them except for small traces which are enough to make him inexcusable. Moreover, all the light in us is turned to darkness, as the Scripture teaches us- -The light shone in the darkness, and the darkness did not receive it.- Here John calls men -darkness.---Therefore we reject everything taught to the contrary concerning man's free will, since man is nothing but the slave of sin and cannot do a thing unless it is -given him from heaven.- For who can boast of being able to do anything good by himself, since Christ says, -No one can come to me unless my Father who sent me draws him-- Who can glory in his own will when he understands that -the mind of the flesh is enmity against God-- Who can speak of his own knowledge in view of the fact that -the natural man does not understand the things of the Spirit of God-- ...

Title: Faithfulness Demonstrated Text: III John 1-8 FCF: We often struggle specifically applying what it means to love one another. Prop: Because we are united in truth and practice with all who are genuine believers, we must continue to walk in truth together. Scripture Intro: [Slide 1] Turn in your bible to III John. Regarding the background of III John, we really have covered it quite extensively already. John is a leader in the greater church of Asia Minor. He is currently trying to defeat a secessionist group who has left orthodox truth and is now teaching a gospel that is not what the apostles received or transmitted. These three epistles are the ripple effects of this group and their evil works. I John is written to the church in which it happened. Ground zero if you will. They needed to be assured that they were in fact the ones who remained true and were not as the secessionists claimed – missing something. II John was to warn another church that such teaching was being exported throughout their area. John charges the assembly he writes to, to be on guard and defend the faith by not welcoming traveling preachers who do not confess Christ as they had received from the apostles. And here finally we come to III John, where John gives the “other-side-of-the-coin” message encouraging hospitality for those traveling preachers who do preach the gospel of Christ. We see the difficulty it is to be a church leader, even in this early age of the church, as John has several fires to put out, all stemming from one aberration of the gospel. Do you see how much damage false teaching can do? III John is probably a letter hand delivered by a group of traveling preachers, one of which is named in this book. It is a letter written to a man named Gaius, who will receive personal instruction from John the Elder himself. Although no theologically groundbreaking concepts are revealed in this book – it does give us a look at church practice specifically in regard to those who preach and teach the gospel of Christ. Many themes from I and II John are repeated here as I am sure you will see. Although having more verses than II John, I do anticipate this book, along with our study on the Epistles of John, concluding next week. After that, a special speaker will be here with you for 1 week and then we will begin a new book study – of which I have not fully settled on yet. Keep praying that God would be clear. I am in III John and I’ll start reading in verse 1 from the NET. You can follow along on page 1378 in the pew bible or whatever version you have. If you don’t have a bible of your own you can take home a pew bible with you today. Since the letter is so short, why don’t we read it all today. Transition: Although the letter clearly gets a little sharper at the end, today we will deal mostly with some very upbeat and encouraging comments from the apostle John. These comments are given color and purpose by what follows – but we’ll have to save all that for next week. So let’s dive in. I.) It is a joy to all when God’s people are united in ongoing faith and practice, so we must continue to walk in truth together. (1-4) a. [Slide 2] 1 - From the elder, to Gaius my dear brother, whom I love in truth. i. III John stands as one of only two books in the bible addressed specifically to one person. ii. Bonus points to who can name the other – Philemon. iii. As we addressed before, John’s title of elder here can and probably does mean both his role as an elder in the church of this area in Asia Minor, and also to his advanced age compared to the rest of the believers there. iv. We are left to wonder at the identity of Gaius. In 4 other places in the New testament there is a Gaius mentioned. Each of them are associates of Paul. v. Based on what Paul writes of Gaius it is unlikely that this Gaius is the same one Paul mentions. vi. Gaius being a relatively common name in the Roman empire, we should assume that III John records the only details about this man we have. vii. But what is recorded is profound. viii. First, John calls him a dear brother. An assurance of identity and common bond. ix. Second, John uses the same expression he did in II John in communicating to the church there. That he loves him in truth. Probably a phrase used in the community of churches there to indicate true Christian love and fellowship. x. Not just that he loved him truly – but that he loved Him in the reality of the truth of the triune God and His work in their hearts. b. [Slide 3] 2 – Dear friend, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, just as it is well with your soul. i. The last piece of information about Gaius John offers is that John calls him friend. Not just a brother in Christ, but even a friend. Well liked and well loved. ii. We see John moves to a greeting in which he intercedes for Gaius to be healthy in his body just like he is healthy in his soul. iii. I think when we use and sing this phrase “It is well with my soul” we tend to see it as our stating = I’m ok with it. iv. But I believe the original author of the song, as well as John here, intends the meaning to be = it makes my soul healthy. Or – it makes me more like Christ. It conforms me to Christ. v. Let’s read the lyrics in that context 1. When peace like a river attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll, whatever my lot thou hast taught me to say - it conforms, it conforms me to Christ. 2. Wow. That song, as powerful as it is, just got WAY more powerful. Right? vi. John again comments on the spiritual health of Gaius. Not only that he is a brother, a friend, loved in truth by John, but also spiritually healthy. Perhaps even healthier than he is physically. vii. This could mean that Gaius was sick or not well – or perhaps John is simply saying this to emphasize his spiritual health. Hard to say. All we do know is that, so far, John has nothing but glowing words for Gaius. c. [Slide 4] 3 – For I rejoiced greatly when the brothers came and testified to your truth, just as you are living according to the truth. i. Now we don’t quite know the context of this because John doesn’t go into great detail. ii. We can surmise that certain brothers came from Gaius to John and reported that he was a true believer. What exactly that testimony was, has yet to be revealed. But from John’s other letters we can take an educated guess. iii. Gaius not only is united in the doctrinal confession of the apostles, but he also is producing evidence of that faith in his life. iv. And to these brothers specifically, Gaius proved himself to be walking in the truth. v. In this testimony by these brothers – John rejoices greatly. vi. In fact, John broadens this statement of joy - d. [Slide 5] 4 – I have no greater joy than this: to hear that my children are living according to the truth. i. As a pastor I can tell you this is absolutely true. ii. There is no greater joy than to hear people who you labored for and taught to have gone on and are found to be walking in truth. iii. So this is generally true for John across the board – but specifically also true in Gaius’ case. iv. Last week we saw how joy is completed in coming face to face. But what was only subtlety mentioned last week takes full scope here. v. That joy is only truly completed when those who gather face to face are unified in their confession and their practice. It is only true joy when true followers of Christ, walk in truth together. vi. It cannot be simply seeing each other – but being one in Christ that provides true and complete joy. e. [Slide 6] Passage Truth: John to his friend and brother Gaius wishes to express great joy over the report he had received about Gaius continuing to walk in the truth. Indeed, nothing could make him more joyful than to hear such things. f. Passage Application: The, perhaps unspoken but implied application is, that Gaius continue to walk in truth. John has a specific way that he can do just that – but for now it is good for us to leave it general. Simply, continue on walking in the truth! g. [Slide 7] Broader Biblical Truth: Zooming out from III John, we see similar patterns of New Testament writers communicating to churches who have done well. Paul to the Philippians and Thessalonians, John to the church in I John, and even John to some of the churches he writes to in Revelation. All express wonderful and heartful joy over their continued walking in truth. Joy is generated in the hearts of true believers when they see other believers continuing to walk in truth. h. Broader Biblical Application: Indeed, this is not only a great joy for the teacher and other believers, but it is the guaranteed outcome of all those who are genuine Christians. We will persevere in our faith and in walking in the truth, because the truth is in us. It is a word of status. Therefore, it is an ongoing battle cry for those who have the truth to continue to walk in it. To persevere. To keep going. Transition: [Slide 8 (blank)] but John has a particular occasion for writing this letter. One more specific than simply – keep walking in truth. An occasion that we will only see half of today and the rest next week. Why specifically is John writing to Gaius? How specifically does John wish Gaius to continue to walk in truth? These answers are found in verses 5-8. II.) Those who are united in faith and practice ought to be supported in gospel work, so we must continue to walk in truth together. (5-8) a. [Slide 9] 5 – Dear friend, you demonstrate faithfulness by whatever you do for the brothers (even though they are strangers). i. Here John clues us in on what the report of the brothers may have been. ii. It seems that Gaius was especially hospitable to traveling preachers and missionaries sent from John’s church. iii. Though they were unknown to Gaius previously – he trusted the testimony of John that they were brothers and cared for them while they were there. iv. John tells Gaius that this is how he has proved that he was faithful. He demonstrated his faithfulness in this way. v. Indeed this is lock step with what John has taught already in I and II John. Walking in truth is more than simply confessing the right things, but then living them. And Gaius was living them. b. [Slide 10] 6 – They have testified to your love before the church. i. The most overt reference here is the love for these brothers that Gaius had. ii. No doubt putting them up and giving them food and shelter, and even provision for their journey. iii. All of which they testified to as they went back to John’s church. iv. But now John is done complimenting Gaius and will turn to exhorting him. Not because he has failed, but because he has succeeded and needs to keep doing so. c. [Slide 11] You will do well to send them on their way in a manner worthy of God. i. So has John sent these same men back to him? ii. Has John sent more or others? iii. This is possible. In fact, as we mentioned previously, this letter may have been sent with the traveling preachers and missionaries to validate that they came from John and give credence to welcoming them. iv. So John’s words here would be an encouragement to continue to care for them, and to make sure that when they left him, they left in a way that God would approve of. v. Again, this sounds strong, but John has made sure to tout Gaius’ keeping of this without a command. John simply issues a “keep it up” to Gaius. vi. Next week we will see why perhaps John desires to reinforce this idea, but for now, it is enough to know that this is important for John. They need to be cared for. But why? d. [Slide 12] 7 – For they have gone forth on behalf of “the name” accepting nothing from the pagans. i. John cites 3 reasons Gaius must continue to be hospitable to the preachers John sends. Two of these are in verse 7 and one in verse 8. ii. These two in verse 7 have to do exclusively with the kind of men John was sending to Gaius. They are shown to be worthy of hospitality both because of the reason they left John’s church and the manner in which they continue to travel and preach. iii. The Reason these men had gone out from John’s assembly was on behalf of the name. iv. Unlike the secessionists in I John and the traveling false teachers in II John, these men had not left John’s church because they had a different gospel to preach. Quite the opposite. v. John says they have gone out on behalf of the name. vi. The name, although somewhat unclear, is without question the name of Christ. And thus, the gospel of Christ as received and transmitted by the apostles from Christ to them. vii. This reason they had come to Gaius was probably enough for him to conclude that he should help them. But John is sure to include the manner in which they traveled and preached. viii. The manner they traveled and preached, was in a selectively funded way. They were not supported or supplied by pagans. ix. Other translations leave this as Gentiles, but in the New Covenant context Gentiles is often a short way to refer to the godless or false deity worshippers of the time. x. What is clear from II John is that many false teachers were traveling around peddling their particular gospel for their particular deity. We actually have some records of these teachers, Rabbis and seers going around and fleecing the people for money. They would orate and expect to be compensated for their time and effort, oftentimes bringing back large amounts of wealth. xi. In short – if you wanted to get wealthy, you could easily make a lucrative career as a traveling preacher. And it didn’t really matter what you preached so long as it interested people enough to pay for you to be there. xii. Recorded for us in scripture is the example of preachers of the gospel of Christ behaving very differently. xiii. While we do see them accept water and provision from the unsaved, we do NOT see any expectation nor dependence on support from the unsaved. Rather, the gospel of God’s free grace is offered without charge and without expectation to those who would hear it. xiv. This was not a cash grab, nor was it an expected or anticipated source of funding. Rather they relied solely on the provision of God through His people. xv. Since they go forth for the cause of Christ and seek no support from those who need the gospel, John concludes… e. [Slide 13] 8 – Therefore we ought to support such people, so that we become coworkers in cooperation with the truth. i. Such people are worthy to be supported. Not just in prayer but in hospitality and love. ii. We ought to give what we can to support their cause, because their cause is our cause. iii. And this is the final reason that John advocates for Gaius to continue to extend gracious hospitality to these men. The first two had to do solely with what kind of men they were. This final reason has to do with who Gaius is. iv. You might remember from II John that he made the case that any who welcome apostates or false teachers into their home and gave them greetings would be participating in their evil deeds. Part of this is because welcoming them affirms their person and their message. v. John essentially says the same thing of these men only with the opposite effect since they proclaimed the truth. vi. When we support them we become co workers with them for the sake of the truth. vii. When we welcome and affirm their message and support their cause, we participate in their works of the gospel. f. [Slide 14] Passage Truth: So John again reiterates how Gaius has been hospitable to traveling preachers who are genuinely preaching the truth of Christ. He even shares with Gaius a few reasons that hospitality should be shown to traveling preachers, both from their character and for the mutual benefit of sharing in the gospel work. g. Passage Application: Therefore, John asks Gaius to continue to do just that. To continue to be hospitable to these traveling preachers, some of whom are probably standing upon the threshold of his door as he read this letter for the first time. h. [Slide 15] Broader Biblical Truth: Zooming out we see all through scripture that our past success at following the Lord’s commands does not give us reason to slack or give us extra credit to fail. Instead, past success only reemphasizes the need for us to continue on and keep obeying. In Christ we are not only able to, but commanded to. i. Broader Biblical Application: And I think while we could draw a more general application here to walk in truth – we’d be foolish to neglect the specific way John mentions in which we can walk in truth together. Those who diligently work for the sake of the gospel of Christ, having no desire or intention of being supported by non-believers, ought to be supported by God’s people. This joins God’s people to the gospel work of the traveling preacher, and gives support to those who would not otherwise have it. Transition: [Slide 16(end)] So how then ought we to live? Conclusion: The primary message of II John amid the encouraging words of the introduction and the conclusion, was to defend the faith. Almost as if they were written in tandem to two churches on opposite poles, III John is written to the other end of that spectrum. It’s primary message, one we have only seen some of so far, is not necessarily to defend the faith. But rather to love the faithful. In II John, John encourages the readers to defend the gospel from those who would wish to distort it. In III John, John encourages the readers to support the gospel by loving those who are faithful witnesses of it. Indeed some could argue that the message of III John to support the faithful is a subpoint of defending the faith – which I will concede

In this lesson we explore the challenge: Do not love the world or the things in the world. Here John is simply restating what Jesus had taught repeatedly: the dangers of loving money and pleasure, the very things most people are living for. We also look at related teachings throughout the Scriptures and consider how we should put this into practice. The lesson closes with an unforgettable story from Clement of Alexandria, illustrating what it will take for us to overcome in this struggle for our hearts and souls.

Bible Passage: Revelation 13:1-10Sermon: Sunday PMSunday 22nd September 2019Speaker: John TorrensTitle: Beware the BeastSeries: Revelation————————————Tonight we will see who/what is this beast? And why John tells us about this beast.Main Point:Although Satan uses the powers and authorities to bring about his destructive purposes in the world, God’s people are safe.In this chapter there is a threefold description of the beast. “An unholy trinity”. Satan pretends to be God and rather than bringing blessings he brings destruction to God’s people. If you count yourself a member of God’s people this evening. We need to know his strategy and line of attack. Tonight we are going to see one of his strategies. There are two points tonight:1. The Beast.2. The Book. The Beast. Vv1-8aTheme: Satan uses the powers of the world to bring about his destructive purposes. We see this beast is summoned out of the sea by this Dragon. We must ask if the dragon is Satan who or what is the beast? The answer is in the text.1. We see it comes out of the sea. The sea is a symbol of evil. The beasts inception is evil. It’s been conjured up for Satan’s purposes.V1 “10 horns and 7 heads”. This language can be found in Daniel. It represents leaders of several nations. The Beast resembles a leaped, bear and a lion. A reference to Daniel 7. The beasts represent 4 nations. Here John is drawing on that language. John sees one beast because this beast represents all political powers and authorities that have been used by Satan. This beast isn’t one person, one time in History but it is a whole host of powers and authorities that have been called upon to bring destruction to God’s nation.V1 - we are also told the seven heads have a blasphemous name.V3 - one of the heads was fatally wounded but had been healed. This is supposed to make us think of Jesus. But what we have here is not Jesus, but a sham!V4 - The result of this is men worship the dragon. This is just dripping with irony. Jesus was physically raised on the third day. And rather than bring glory the whole world mocks the Father.V4 - Who is like the beast? Last week we saw Satan isn’t even on an equal footing with Jesus. This description is Satan’s strategy. He has deceived the word into thinking that Glory and Honour is found in Power. So the world rather than worshipping its creator and saviour, the world worships Power and the powerful.V5-8 The persecution is described to us.This is a clear picture of our world. The powerful people and nations slander the very God they owe their power too. This is the ironic strategy of Satan’s strategy.Satan is using power in this world to steal glory from God.John isn’t saying the regimes and governments are all evil! It’s not that we should opt out of voting. But it’s to make us wise and help us see that nations and regimes can be used to bring destruction to God’s people.Rather than despair, we are called to pray for all these people who drive power and can change culture. We are called to pray for these people! We are to pray that they not abuse their power and that they will be saved. This is how we respond to the beast. We call upon the most powerful one, God in prayer.2. The Book vv8b-10Theme: God’s people can patiently endure and remain faithful because we live under Christ’s authority.V10 - “this calls for patient endurance and faithfulness of the saints.”WHY?Why do we need to patiently endure?V10 - “if anyone is to go into captivity, into captivity he will go....” Here John is quoting two verses from Jeremiah. He does this to warn his people that the beast will bring persecution like the time of Jeremiah. As long as the church remains the beast will come after us. We need to know this so that we might endure! We are called to remain faithful. It’s hard for us to remain faithful because deep down we want to join the world and worship the powerful and famous.Bruce Springsteen - ‘(You) waste your summer praying in vain for a saviour to rise from these streets.’This line encapsulates many of our hearts. We would love for someone to take hold of our land and fix our country and sort out the mess our country is in. This is our desire we long for a quick fix, no problems but this passage shows us we will be under attack until Jesus returns. The psalmist says do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men who cannot be saved. Our problem is we have this desire to worship the beast. To trust the powerful. But John in Rev is saying don’t trust in mortal men.HOW?How do we patiently endure?V8 - The Book.We need to know our Salvation is tidied up in something that was written even before the world began. The Lambs book of life was written before the world was even made! Jesus has already put your name down. God doesn’t add to the book when he feels like, it has already been written! v8John says don’t look at the beast, look at the book that was written before the foundation of the world and see the real power that it contains! Your name was written down by the most powerful! We are to look to the lamb that was slain time and time again. John says before the world was even created, God knew you, he knew the days of your life and he put your name in the lambs book of life. That is how we react, we must focus on the book and focus on the power that God will grant us eternal Salvation!Satan’s battle plan is the destruction of God’s people and to steal glory from God. Don’t be distressed rather than focusing on the beast, focus on the book and know that the lamb has written your name into the book of life forever. Remain faithful and patiently endured and know that we are saved by the true lamb. If you belong to God, know you are safe!
John's beginning words of chapter three are some of the most marvellous in the entire Bible. This is a truth, a fact in which we must establish ourselves firmly - who we are in Christ. Everyone lives in such a way in how they think of themselves. If you think you are worthless you will live that way. Here John tell you who you are and thus how you should live your life.

June 16, 2019 | This week our focus is on text from John’s Gospel. Here John speaks about how Jesus’ message is continued through the work of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Jesus reflecting his message and values. The Holy Spirit’s gifts are not found primarily in speaking in tongues and Pentecostal drama like we heard last week but in living in the way of Jesus. The question is how do we do that? How do we live in the way that Jesus lived? The answer to that comes in our welcoming, embracing, healing and nurturing presence to one another, the community and world around us. By living this way Jesus’ Spirit joins us with all creation, building bridges with diversity, inspiring us to creativity and mediating divine healing. I am certain that it requires a bit of patient listening on our part — but the inner voice of God’s Spirit is always there for us.

Here John addresses directly those he feels spiritually responsible for. He challenges them by declaring the purpose of fellowship with God and comforts them if they fail. Nowadays, you hear a lot about repentance. America needs to repent. France needs to repent. The world needs to repent. Why? Judgment is on the way. The last time I checked, Gospel means too-good-to-be-true-news. There’s nothing too-good-to-be-true about impending judgment. Man, that’s doom and gloom. I think many — if not most — Christians have been taught incorrectly regarding repentance. Today, I’d like to take a stab at clearing this up. Let’s take a look at our core text: (Mark 1:14-15 ESV) 14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel. First of all, Jesus began His ministry by proclaiming the Gospel. Just to get you caught-up, the Gospel is the too-good-to-be-true-news of God’s Kingdom, which is powered by His unconditional Love and Grace. So, here we find Jesus calling for repentance. What is He asking for? Now if you ask the M1-A1 saint steeped in religious Christianity, they’re likely to tell you it means “confess your sins.” The Greek word for repentance is: g3340. metanoe?; from 3326 and 3539; to think differently or afterwards, i. e. reconsider (morally, feel compunction):— repent. AV (34)- repent 34; to change one's mind, i. e. to repent to change one's mind for better, heartily to amend with abhorrence of one's past sins Did you catch that? “To think differently…” “To change one’s mind…” This is true repentance. Confession of sin happens once in the life of a believer — at the new birth. In order to be saved you must recognize you are dying. The recognition is the confession you are a sinner in need of a savior. Watch this: you only confess that you are a sinner. God knows your heart even before you are born again and you, frankly, don’t have the time to confess them all. Once you’re born-again, you confess ONLY what God says about you! That you are righteous (2 Corinthians 5:21). That you are holy (John 17:17-19, Hebrews 10:10). That you are delivered (2 Corinthians 1:10). That you are healed (1 Peter 2:24). That you are prospered (2 Corinthians 9:8, 3 John 1:2). While we’re here, true humility is agreeing with what God has said about us! It is not self-abasement or self-deprecation! Of course, detractors of this message will quickly run to James 5:16 and say we have to confess our sins. Nope, we have to confess our faults, which is an entirely different matter. Here’s the difference: if I tell you I have an anger management issue, that’s a fault I confess to you so you can pray this doesn’t overcome me. If I tell you that my anger management issue caused me to punch someone in the face, now I’ve confessed an actual sin to me and you have something to lord over me. Step two for the detractors is 1 John 1:9-10, which says: (1 John 1:9-10 ESV) 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. Here John is speaking of the need to confess sin to be born again. John was speaking to a group of folks who believed there was no need to admit one is a sinner before being saved. All have sinned, that’s a true statement. Indeed, all sin! But not all are sinners! A sinner is someone who habitually, deliberately, sets out to sin. They do it because it’s their nature. Painters paint, bakers bake, and mechanics repair. When a saint sins, he or she is convicted by the Holy Spirit of their righteousness, not their sin. It is the consciousness of righteousness that leads to repentance. And that repentance leads to a change of mind which leads to a change in action. We will only do as well as we’re taught. If we’re taught that we have to confess every sin, we become sin-conscious and, thus, sin more. If we allow the Holy Spirit to teach us all things (John 14:26) he will tell us ...

Mssingno - Xe2 Both myself & Cian Ó Cíobháin have featured tracks from Mssingo in previous podcast which is good enough to give him Shock preferred artist status. With electronic music you're always looking for something that gives that little tingle - a feeling you get when you hear something that sounds like it's from somewhere else. 13. Fabio Frizzi - Main Theme Absolutely floored by this first time I heard it. Just an extraordinary piece of synthesizer music from the 1979 soundtrack for Italian horror movie Zombi 2. 14. Burial - Raver Perfect music for avoiding eye contact on the night bus. 15. Lee Hazlewood - My Baby Cried All Night Long Taking us right out of that moment is moustached troubadour & regular at the Shock salon; Lee Hazlewood. And the moral of this story is that you shouldn't be caught messin' Where you shouldn't been messin'. 16. World Domination Enterprises – Asbestos Lead Asbestos Music that sounds more like it's made on a building site than a recording studio. 17. The Durutti Column - Otis Vini Reilly uses an Otis Redding vocal loop to great effect for this track. 18. Dennis Wilson - Time The deterioration of Dennis Wilson's, once part of the angelic harmonies of the Beach Boys is a shocking thing to hear yet also adds a vulnerability to his music. 19. Tonstartssbandht - Hymn Eola Tonstartssbandht (pronounced tahn-starts-bandit) are two brothers Edwin & Andy White who've recorded dozens of albums merging dramatic choral style vocals & space rock-esque textures. 20. John Cooper Clarke - Beasley Boulevard (Live at Shock 16.5.08) I don't think this track can be heard elsewhere so a bit of an exclusive for our listeners I guess. It's a sequel to Cooper Clarke's most well known track Beasley Street. Here John deals with Beasley Street as it might be now, fully in the grip of gentrification. 21. Moondog - Pastoral Pastoral is a childlike melody from the Viking of sixth avenue which brings the podcast to a close. So this is goodbye, so this is farewell, the fight's final bell. for now… APPLE PODCASTS: apple.co/2RtcbVZ SPOTIFY: spoti.fi/2GxY7aN WEB: www.shockworldservice.com MAILOUT: bit.ly/2TO6XVq
THE MINISTRY OF JOHN THE BAPTIST - Part 4Matt. 3:13-17 “Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he suffered him. And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”We are told by Mark specifically where Jesus came from to be baptized of John. Mark 1:9 says, “And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan.” This was probably two or three days journey for Jesus. Why did Jesus come and ask John to baptize Him? It certainly was not because He needed to repent or have sins washed away. He did come to John and ask him for baptism.John's first response is brought out in the words. “But John forbad, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?” The word “forbad” translates “diakoluo” and means “ to hinder, to prevent.” It is a imperfect active indicative verb. This is a continuous action verb and means that John kept on resisting the idea of baptizing Jesus. It does not imply an argument. John baptized repentant sinners. It was evident to John that Jesus needed no repentance. What a testimony to the purity and holiness of Christ! John refuse to baptize the Pharisees and Sadducees on the grounds of hypocrisy. Here John is resisting on the grounds of our Lord's holiness and office.Jesus is manifest to Israel at His baptism. From this point on, He will begin His public ministry. It is my belief that John's baptism was a picture of the death, burial and resurrection and not different from Christian baptism. John was the last of the Old Testament prophets. He did not understand what would happen in the setting aside of the nation of Israel and the birth of the Church. This was a hidden mystery to Old Testament saints. John probably did not understand the truth of the “Suffering Messiah” and therefore, would not have seen the picture in baptism of the death, burial and resurrection. This is MY OPINION. And if you have different beliefs about this, it is YOUR OPINION. It is not wrong to have an opinion. It is wrong to teach our opinions as INFALLIBLE. God does not explain some things and leaves us to trust Him with those things He doesn't explain.John said, “I have need to be baptized of thee.” The verb “I have” is a present tense. John says, “I continually have, I am in a state of constant need.” John was a holy man. But when Jesus came on the scene, all of a sudden John saw himself. Jesus has a way about doing that to us. Isaiah was in good shape until he saw the “Lord high and lifted up.” Then Isaiah said, “Woe is me! for I am undone . . .” The presence of God will make the holiest man fall on his face and see the need of grace. This is the reason John said, “I have need to be baptized of thee.” Those who walk the closest to the Lord, see themselves as sinners in need of grace. You can go to the bank with this: any arrogant cocky Christian is not even in the vicinity of the Lord. He will have to impress you with his knowledge or something else; it will not be with his walk with the Lord. Now I'm not setting myself up as a judge. What I'm saying is Bible: Isaiah 57:15 says, “For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.”Jesus responds to John's reluctance with the words, “Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness . . .

Continuing with our study of First Corinthians, Reverend Brown takes a look at First Corinthians 12:1-13. Here John in his letters asks of the members of the church in Corinth, are you using your gifts for yourself and your needs or are you using them for the "Common Good" in your church. When our gifts seem to go unnoticed do, we find ways to grow them within our church or do we become frustrated and just move along to another church? If we treat our spiritual life as a shopping trip are we just mixing and matching what ever we might find for our good, rather then listening to the call for the common good.Todays sermon asks of us can we strive for developing and expanding the body of Christ and the common good of the church, rather then looking for personal satisfaction and reward. Thanks to everyone listening to our podcast.
