Will smart homes and AI appliances tempt consumers at Berlin tech show?

Smart homes and AI-powered kitchen appliances were the hot topics at this year's IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin. But do consumers want to spend their hard-earned money on the latest tech gadgets? The tech event didn't officially open until September 6, but big brands had already given a sneak peek of what visitors would be able to see. German manufacturers were well represented. Miele showed off an app-connected vacuum cleaner that will alert you when it needs emptying. And Siemens went big on AI too—from artificially intelligent washing machines that detect water hardness and dispense detergent and fabric softener accordingly, to an oven that knows what food has been placed inside and can suggest the best way to cook it. “The push for AI in products is both driven by us as a brand, but also by consumer demand. Because just look at what happens around us. AI is everywhere. So people, of course, start asking, ‘How can it help me in my private life at home?' Because at work we are quite used to it already, at least to a certain extent. But at home, it's like you want to understand how AI can help you. And we as a brand are pushing, of course, technology forward. So, we use AI to enhance, let's say, at the consumer experience in a way that really is helpful,” says Katja Wendel, Head of Marketing, Siemens Home Appliances, Central Europe. At Bosch, the buzzword is connectivity. Home appliances that connect to your phone and keep you updated on what they are doing with your clothes, your food, or your washing up. The big idea is to help consumers use their products better. “The megatrend of networking and connectivity will continue, in conjunction with efficiency and sustainability,” says Andreas Diepold, Managing Director, Home Appliances, Bosch. This was IFA's 100th year, and over the century it cemented its position as one of the most important consumer electronic shows in the world. More than 1,800 exhibitors were at IFA this year, and the show was expected to welcome at least 182,000 visitors. IFA ran from 6-10 September in Berlin. House Bill Blocks Bidens Ban on Home Appliances

The House of Representatives, which is currently dominated by the Republican Party, has ushered in a bipartisan bill. The intend of this legislation is to curb the Biden administration's inclination towards using the federal machine to either completely ban, or extensively restrict, an enlarging array of domestic appliances. This stance of the administration is facilitated under the rationale of fighting against climate change. The bill expresses opposition to the potential removal of Americans' appliances by government officials. The cause for this removal is stated to adhere to an extreme environmental campaign. The covert way these appliances have been banned or limited under the Biden Administration incites further concern. This newly-introduced legislation is underpinned by three primary requisites. Initially, it stipulates that any emerging energy efficiency standards should be worth the cost of implementation. If the price outweighs the return, then the standard should not be considered, as per this directive. Next, the legislation insistently posits that new standards must lead to real and measurable savings of energy or water. The standards should be practical and demonstrate tangible benefits; they shouldn't just be theoretical ideals.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Australians are installing an estimated 940,000 new gas appliances and 800,000 new resistive electric appliances -panel heaters, oil heaters and older style electric hot water systems - every year, which are locking in significant long-term costs for heating and cooking. The Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis(IEEFA) found these inefficient appliances will force Australians to rack up $3.4billion in unnecessary energy costs because, whilst they may be cheaper to buy, they are more expensive to run. The problem is Australia has no minimum energy standards for space heaters, water heaters or cooktops which would enable consumers to make informed decisions about these important home appliances. Jay Gordon, IEEFA's Energy Finance Analyst, says the government could fix the problem with a single intervention. Shogo Matsunaga's practice covers legal advice and representation before courts in patent infringement disputes in the ICT and semiconductor technology sectors, trademark infringement disputes including anti-counterfeiting measures. Shogo is one of the most influential SEP experts in Japan, one of the organizers of the so-called “SEP study group in Japan,” and a Partner at Sonderhoff & Einsel, where he has worked on many SEP cases in the past. At Sonderhoff & Einsel, a law firm with German roots that has quite some history and is over 100 years in practice, Shogo represents Japanese clients in their worldwide SEP licensing negotiations and SEP litigation disputes. Japan has experienced only a handful of SEP cases thus far, including the Apple v. Samsung case, which saw a verdict delivered on May 16, 2014. Shogo discusses and expands upon the court ruling in the podcast because he feels that the outcome of the cases is often misinterpreted. He explains that Japanese courts are too often perceived as standards implementer friendly, which he explains is different. Shogo reveals that he was several times very close to being part of another SEP case in Japan, but when after all, the parties settled. But Shogo believes we will soon see the next SEP case litigated in Japan, maybe later this year. This also makes sense because Shogo explains that Japanese courts are efficient and that the Japanese smartphone market is huge, with strong sales numbers for high-end smartphone generations and brands.Japanese government agencies like the JPO or the METI have published guidelines for SEP licensing negotiations and fair value calculations. These guidelines, Shogo explains, are, however, not binding for courts and, in practice, only used sometimes. Like the JPO “Manual of Hantei”, a service by the JPO to claim chart Japanese patents – a service that was hardly ever used because claim chart results would be published.Shogo elaborates and compares the German court systems with the Japanese court systems, which have similarities because the Japanese patent system used the German system as the foundation. Even today, German courts have developed to handle multiple SEP cases per year, which differs from Japanese courts. Shogo explains the reason for that is that, as of today, the definition of a willing licensee in Japan could be clearer. SEP enforcing parties fear losing the case or only getting low royalties when litigating in Japanese courts. Again, Shogo does not see it that way and encourages SEP holders to try the courts again.Shogo describes how the Japanese industries have been behind in terms of SEP licensing. Also, in Japan, many suppliers indemnify OEMs when shipping connectivity solutions. Indemnification is decreasing, but Shogo feels the industry needs to change faster. Shogo, however, has a good feeling about the rising IoT industry in Japan and is eager to learn about SEP licensing and engage in understanding it early on. Shogo regularly meets with the Japanese IP industry experts in a group organized by METI called “SEP study group”. This group comprises over 150 member experts from various industries like Telecom, Automotive, Manufacturing, Home Appliances and many more. The Japanese community is well organized. However, Shogo explains when it's about SEPs, the different points of view, e.g., between automotive OEMs and the SEP owners, are often not openly discussed. Shogo would love to see more contrivers discussions. After all, Japan remains an exciting market and may soon become another important SEP litigation venue.

Today's episode is with Caitlin Nagy and we talk all about Young Onset Parkinson's Disease -  including her diagnosis, her journey and the wisdom she's gained along the way.   A lot of people perceive Parkinson's Disease [PD] to be an old person's disease. However, the number of people diagnosed with PD in their 20's, 30's and 40's is dramatically increasing. In fact it is one of the fastest growing neurological disorder in people under 45.   In this episode Caitlin shares the circumstances surrounding her diagnosis at 32 years old and how her pregnancy significantly influenced the progression of the symptoms (which is not uncommon). For the first 6 years Caitlin avoided social events, get togethers or meeting up with old friends because she was totally ashamed of her body and her lack of control over it. And really just didn't want to try and explain what it was when I really hadn't accepted what it was myself.   Caitlin shares her journey from resistance to acceptance and what that has meant for her self esteem and self identity [this might be my favorite part of the whole discussion].    In this episode Caitlin also talks about the reality of how medications for PD have been exclusively tested on only men and yet, for women there is a significant influence that comes from our unique hormonal journey and cyclical physiology.    Caitlin shares what medical and holistic approaches have been helpful for her including synchronizing her nutrition and lifestyle to the infradian rhythms of her body, psilocybin microdosing and a whole host of other approaches.    More about Caitlin / Creative By Caitlin + Highlands Estate: Caitlin is a self described generator, visual storyteller, creative problem solver and late night Pinterest junkie who owns and operates Creative By Caitlin. She specializes in brand development, website design and creative consulting. Caitlin has a background in Fine Art, majoring in Sculpture/Installation, Advertising & Graphic Design. She started her Marketing career in Sponsorship Advertising and had the opportunity to work in a multitude of different Industries on both the client and agency side, ranging from the Financial Sector, Non-for-profit, Sporting Goods, Home Appliances and Power Tools. She has lead and developed creative teams for some of the biggest household brands in North America and currently consult on process and team development for in-house creative teams and boutique agencies. In 2020 Caitlin and her family purchased a 1960's chalet on 97 acres in the Blue Mountains of Ontario. What they thought was going to be an Airbnb and family ski getaway quickly morphed into an even bigger idea of turning it to a luxury destination resort and wedding venue. They now own and operate Highlands Estate. Today's guest is Sam D'Amico, Founder and CEO at Impulse. Impulse is helping to electrify homes with sleek-looking all-electric appliances, starting with an induction cooktop.Regardless of whether or not you pay close attention to the climate space, you've probably seen some commentary in the last few weeks about gas stoves. The gas stovetop has become one of the latest culture war topics in American political discourse. Recent remarks from an official with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission about health risks associated with gas stoves in the home have prompted a wave of conservative voices to speak out in support of gas stoves, with one prominent House Republican tweeting a picture of a lit gas stovetop and the caption QUOTE "you'll have to pry it from my COLD DEAD HANDS!"Sam and Cody have a great conversation about the news from the last few weeks, the emissions profile of gas stoves, recent data on health risks associated with gas stoves in the home, the history of how gas stoves came into homes in the first place, some of the city and state level regulation that has recently been enacted around gas hookups in new construction, and then all about induction stoves and what Impulse is building. Since this topic is likely to cross over and come up in conversation with folks you might not expect, we hope you find it informative and helpful. In this episode, we cover: [3:38] The culture war around gas stoves [5:25] Growth of gas usage in homes [9:57] Emissions and human health concerns of using gas stoves[17:57] Regulations around gas hookups[22:27] Utility incentives and influencer campaigns for gas appliances [27:11] Legacy electric stove tops [31:14] An overview of induction stoves [5:45] Installation process for induction stoves [40:04] Impulse's suite of appliances[45:30] Sam's background and how he transitioned to working on appliances[47:55] Future plans for Impulse [50:49] Challenges and changes needed to help people understand induction stoves Get connected: Cody Simms Twitter / LinkedInSam D'Amico / ImpulseMCJ Podcast / Collective*You can also reach us via email at info@mcjcollective.com, where we encourage you to share your feedback on episodes and suggestions for future topics or guests.Episode recorded on January 19, 2023
