She also shares a few memories of performing as an Ikette with the Ike & Tina Turner Revue in the 1960s, including how she bonded with Tina Turner immediately because of astrology, and the story of the near tragic bus accident that nearly ended Shelly's career. TVC 625.3: Ed welcomes singer and dancer Shelly Clark, one of the founding members of Honey Cone, the legendary R&B and soul girl group from the late 1960s and early 1970s that was also the premier female group for Hot Wax Records, the label operated by the famed writing team Holland-Dozier-Holland. Honey Cone was also the very first act to appear on the debut episode of Soul Train in 1971, performing two of their hits, "Want Ads" and "Stick Up." Shelly talks to Ed about the significance of appearing on Soul Train. She also explains how she was working as a regular dancer on The Jim Nabors Hour (CBS, 1969-1971) at the time "Want Ads" became a big hit, and how she had to hire her own replacement on the Nabors show so that she could tour nationally with Honey Cone. This splendid episode won a WEBBY Award featuring the talented and gracious Shelly Clark White, founding member of the Gold Record winning musical group, Honey Cone and wife of Verdine White of Earth, Wind and Fire. She has been a Broadway performer at the age of 5, a singer on the Cab Calloway Revue at age 10, an Ikette with Tina Turner; a back up singer to many performers from Little Richard and Andy Williams to Eddie Kendricks to her own gold winning group, Honey Cone. Simply an informative yet funny episode! Not to be missed.Produced, directed and hosted by Stephen E Davis
In this episode, I shared the history of the girl-empowerment trio “Honey Cone”. They created one of my fave old school songs, “Want Ads” and I wanted to cover them. Unfortunately, this is the VERY FIRST EPISODE where I was unable to create and “AaronaRemake” to it because Garage Band is malfunctioning on my laptop. I will find another audio software to use and re-cut this episode by I wanted to release it to bring the podcast back from hiatus and to put the educational content on YouTube.

From performing on Broadway in the 1955 production of the House of Flowers at 8 years old to being an Ikette with Tina Turner to being a founder of the The Honey Cone, Shelley Wright has done it all. Her story in her own words!
Label: Colpix 712Year: 1963Condition: M-Price: $30.00This fast-paced Girl Group rocker features Carolyn Willis, a singer with both Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeans and the Honey Cone. Both songs were written by David Gates, and whoever produced the tracks was clearly a fan of Phil Spector's patented (well, not really) Wall of Sound — these are terrific Phil Spector soundalikes (have a listen to the mp3 snippet in our "jukebox" to hear what I mean!). This was a one-off single with no followups or albums. Note: This beautiful copy comes in a vintage Colpix Records factory sleeve. It has Mint labels. Although the vinyl (styrene) has some light surface scuffing, the grooves themselves have been well cared for, storing pristine Mint audio! (This scan is a representative image from our archives.)
Shelly was born Mashelle Clark in Brooklyn, New York. An original member and cofounder of The Honey Cone, Shelly has had a remarkable career. Beginning as a child star at the age of seven she headlined at the renowned Apollo Theatre and the Palace Theatre before making her Broadway debut with Pearl Bailey and Diahann Carroll in the celebrated hit musical "The House of Flowers."Clark went on to dazzle audiences touring with Cab Calloway in his renowned Cotton Club Revue followed by her work with artists including Dusty Springfield, Tom Jones, Little Richard, DJ Rogers and Richard Harris. She also toured nationally with The Ike & Tina Turner Revue as one of the historic Ikettes. With The Honey Cone, Shelly was part of creating an enduring legacy of Billboard No. 1 and Top 10 hits that garnered numerous gold records and esteemed industry awards.Shelly has been married to Verdine White, the iconic bass player and co-founder of Earth, Wind & Fire for 40 years.Verdine White is best know as the visionary entertainer, producer, fashion trend setter and electrifying bass player of Earth Wind & Fire. Born and raised in Chicago, he easily might have followed his father’s footsteps into the field of medicine. It turned out however that music chose Verdine instead. He saw a Double bass in his high school orchestra class and there began his formal training. In Verdine’s words… ”The instrument was standing alone in the corner of the orchestra class....tall, mysterious and majestic, so different from all the others, it called me and the love affair began."Verdine honed his skills in local jazz clubs throughout Chicago and neighboring cities which allowed him to perfect his unique electric bass style and technique. Already an accomplished bassist, Verdine joined his brother Maurice White in Los Angeles to form one of the most successful POP and R&B bands of all time... Honey Cone [00:23] a side: "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show (Part I)" b side: "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show (Part II)" Hot Wax HS 7110 1971 Of course the show is going on when I've got more monkey tunes to spin. Fun fact: lead singer Edna Wright is the sister of Darlene Love. Reached #5 on the R&B charts and #15 on the Hot 100. Another fun fact: Hot Wax was started by the great Holland, Dozier and Holland when they left Motown in 1968. Murray Head [07:20] a side: "One Night in Bangkok" b side: "Merano" MCA Records PB-13988 1984 The sound of 80s musicals is alive and well in this production from ABBA's Bjorn and Benny teaming up with Tim Rice, featuring Murray Head doing to the spoken word bits. Oh right, it's a musical about Chess... called Chess. The great Frank Rich described the Broadway production thusly: "a suite of temper tantrums, [where] the characters ... yell at one another to rock music". INXS [19:35] a side: "The One Thing" b side: "Phantim of the Opera" ATCO Records 7-99905 1982 The lead single from their 1982 album Shabooh Shoobah, released in the US in 1983. The b-side is a tongue in cheek reference to yes, the Phantom of the Opera and INXS lead guitarist Tim Farriss. The Damned [26:15] a side: "One Way Love" b side: "Don't Cry Wolf" Stiff Records BUY 24 1977 A 1981 Re-release of their second single originally release in 1977, this time with the sides flipped around. Interestingly enough, this was produced by Nick Mason after the band originally tried to get the ever reclusive Syd Barrett to produce. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy [34:39] a side: "One with the Birds" b side: "Southside of the World" Palace Records PR20 1998 The first official release of the newly minted Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, after a brief spell recording and performing as Will Oldham, after a slightly longer spell recording and performing of all the Palace iterations. Brenton Wood [42:53] a side: "The Oogum Boogum Song" b side: "I Like the Way You Love Me" Double Shot Records 111 1967 Hot stuff and cool stuff from Brenton Wood. This single reached #19 on the R&B charts and #34 on the Hot 100 in 1967. Seems like it should have gone much higher than that if you ask me. The Marmalade [48:25] a side: "Otherwise It's Been a Perfect Day" b side: "I See the Rain" Epic Records 5-10236 1967 Sorta Kinksian, sort Bacharachian a-side from these Glaswegians. But that flipside! Some excellent psyche pop. Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart [55:07] a side: "Out & About" b side: "My Little Chickadee" A&M Records 858 Or as they say in Canada, Oot and Aboot. Super singer/songwriters release a bit of their own magic that reached #39 on the Hot 100 in 1967. And the nostalgic b-side sort of sets us up for when we reach Sonny & Cher's 1967 single "Podunk" in a few episodes from now. Fun fact: Jeanie was their drummer, and Phil Spector approves. Smith with Devo, Richard Hell & The Voidoids, Morrissey, Michael Nesmith & The First National Band, Arctic Monkeys, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Honey Cone, Neon Philharmonic, Spanky & Our Gang, Dan Hartman, Neil Sedaka, Cliff Richard, and Elton John in-between.Each week Dennis The Menace goes up to his musical attic (his brain) to create sets of rock and roll music you’ve never heard together before and probably never will again. The songs are put together by a “loose theme” and might share some intricate musical heritage, make for the ultimate segué, or just sound good together.
You listen to the group Honey Cone, described today as early feminists, and they are talking about a universal truth and in memorable pop terms. No hatred of men here, just the emotional recognition that if you don’t love her, she can’t really love you. Love between a man and a woman is a two-way street. (Unlike God’s love for us, which at the center is a one-way street.) If you don’t understand this and are a man, you are in for trouble “Further on Up the Road” (Clapton and the Band, 1978). I learned this from more than one source, which I talk about in the cast; but the main source was Honey Cone. Or rather, they told me it before I could hear it. And now I am telling you. Oh, and I also learned this (crucial) life lesson from “Atom Age Vampire”. “Atom Age Vampire” is one of those brilliant artistic and sadistic Italian horror movies from the early 1960s that if you saw it once, you never forgot it. (If you see it now, you’ll never forget it!) Those movies are stocked with wisdom, communicated mostly in “Grand Guignol” situations of, shall we say, existential urgency. But the wisdom is there. “Atom Age Vampire” teaches us about the nature of real love, trustable love, and faithful love. Versus… well, you’ll see. In short, we love because we are first loved, and then we love back. LUV U!
President Trump took his first trip abroad as leader of the USA, and of course it was messy. And the co-hosts finally figured out what made them gay so long ago - all those chicken nuggets, according to a study self-published in Albania. He went on to become the lead guitarist for Stevie Wonder when Wonder served as the opening act on the Rolling Stones 1972 tour. oh my lord! I am starting out with thanking everyone for their support last episode. We are building back up from the hiatus so quickly, it makes me all warm and fuzzy inside, like a caterpillar in a deep fryer! Thank you!Second, we all knew a regular episode wasn't happening for Christmas, right? You all really should have told me. So what we get here is a (mostly) family appropriate set of music and clips. Dawn Davenport ruined family time for everyone, but what do you expect from someone who was eating a meatball sandwich right out in class?Listen to Honey Cone, Blue Magic (brought to you by Coke, McDonald's, and the good people at Chevrolet), Mame, Akim and Teddy Vann, Snow Miser and Heat Miser, and the lovely Lois Bromfield. Let's see if it is a normal episode for the New Year, or more clips and music. You probably know better than i do.Again, thank you all, and as always, leave comments and questions!
