This year at the church we have been moving our Faith Forward by exploring discipleship in the gospel of Matthew. Near the end of the book of Matthew, Jesus calls his disciples to give special consideration for those on the margins of society, what he calls "the least of these". In taking care of orphans, widows, prisoners, and the like, we have the privilege of serving Jesus, himself. This summer at PLCPC, while Pastor Karla is on Sabbatical, we have the unique opportunity to hear from some of our Christian sisters and brothers who are doing this type of frontline discipleship ministry. The speakers range from those doing ministry to the unhoused, to those releasing people in bondage from human trafficking, to those helping refugees on our own border. Hopefully, you will be inspired and encouraged to take your own step in deeper discipleship by hearing their stories. Wherever God calls, might we all have the courage to answer. We are privileged to hear from author and speaker, Kevin Nye. Kevin is a writer and advocate working toward ending homelessness by engaging best practices. Kevin's first book released in August of 2022 and is titled, "Grace Can Lead Us Home: A Christian Call to End Homelessness". Kevin currently lives with his wife and son in Minneapolis, MN, where he works as Housing Director at an organization addressing youth homelessness. This week, Kevin discusses the "Parable of the Soewer" and how the Sower throws good seeds to all kinds of soil, regardless of what may come of them. What can we learn from this act of grace in our interaction with the unhoused? Passage: Luke 8:4-8 We have three worship opportunities for you to experience. We have our Sanctuary Service ("blended") at 9am. Our Online Service begins at 9:30am at pointlomachurch.org. And our Chapel Service ("modern") starts at 10:30am. Please consider joining us for one of these services. Scott Campagna, Senior Director of Housing at IMEG, is featured in this episode—one in a series of conversations with the firm's market leaders. Scott talks about the subsectors of IMEG's housing work—neighborhoods, multifamily, student housing, and senior living—and the challenges and opportunities facing the market overall. “It's an interesting time,” he says. “There's a huge housing demand in all sectors but in the current environment, with the lending being pulled back, projects in all sectors generally are moving a bit slower.” Scott also discusses office-to-residential conversions, a trending topic in the market. He cautions that such pursuits always be preceded by an infrastructure assessment. “Certainly not every building is the same nor is it best suited necessarily for a housing conversion. You need to look at the systems infrastructure to ensure it will support the housing project. You don't want to be hit with any surprises after the fact or during construction.” On all projects in the market, Scott says the mentality at IMEG is to “Turn housing into homes. We understand we are drawing more than just lines on paper—we are providing a home where people can thrive and flourish within our communities.”

Kevin Nye is the author of Grace Can Lead Us Home: A Christian Call to End Homelessness, and Housing Director of a non-profit youth center. In this episode, Kevin helps us understand some of the misconceptions about homelessness—what's really going on—and what we can do about it. Specifically, he helps us understand why the first thing we should do is provide housing for those who need it, not because they've earned it, but as an act of grace.THIS EPISODE'S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:Kevin Nye is the author of Grace Can Lead Us Home: A Christian Call to End Homelessness, and Housing Director a non-profit youth center.Having attended Fuller Seminary, Kevin Nye initially intended to be a pastor.Kevin Nye helps us understand some of the common misconceptions about homelessness. One common misconception about homelessness is that people who experience homelessness somehow deserve it.Kevin Nye invites us to respond to the challenge of homelessness with grace. That is, we should not focus on what people deserve or earn in order to receive help when struggling with homelessness.Markus shares about an encounter he had with a homeless person that day and Kevin offers his response.Every challenging or uncomfortable encounter we have with a person experiencing homelessness is likely the result of some kind of systemic failure that has led or kept that person where they are.A person who experiences homelessness has fallen through every social safety net.Challenges like addiction and mental illness are much easier to address and manage when a person has housing. The housing first strategy costs less than the current system which tends to keep people where they are.RELEVANT RESOURCES AND LINKS:Kevin NyeWebsite – www.kevinmnye.comTwitter - @kevinmnye1Instagram - @kevinmnyeFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/knye1Books mentioned:Grace Can Lead Us Home: A Christian Call to End Homelessness, by Kevin Nye

#28 – Jessica Bondy has always been a natural leader and from a young age she developed a passion for helping others. Towards the end of high school, as she tried to figure out what career path to go down, she flipped open a book about careers and landed on recreation therapist. Everything about the job seemed right so she set off to the University of Waterloo to begin her education. While excelling academically in her undergraduate degrees (she did two of them simultaneously), Jessica became heavily involved in student life, specifically in the area of housing. While she had plans to pursue a full-time Master's degree once she graduated, a full-time job popped up in Campus Housing and Jessica jumped at the opportunity, thus beginning her career in Student Affairs. Years later while on maternity leave from another role at the university, Jessica began to feel like she needed to make a change. After testing out many options, she realized that if she wanted to ensure happiness in her future career she needed to get back to her roots and help those in need. When a person thinks about the YMCA of Berks County/Reading, he/she may think about the family programs such as swimming, child care, basketball, fitness center and summer camp. But did you know that YMCA also provides transitional housing to individuals seeking assistance with life skills, self-improvement and support. Jami Geist, YMCA’s Housing Director says that Y has been a temporary home for hundreds of men and women who are working through a myriad of life situations including homelessness, recovery from use of alcohol and drugs, legal issues and child custody challenges. An employee of the YMCA for 17 years, Jami states she enjoys her job. “I started at the YMCA as a Case Manager.” Jami says she finds it a joy to see individuals who were once living at the YMCA, are now responsible and productive citizens. They are able to work on their goals while residing in the YMCA. These goals are specific to the individual’s needs and the length of stay in the YMCA Housing program varies based on the individuals’ goals. Jami indicated that ex-residents often see her on the streets and stop to say hello and thank you for the help they received as a resident at the Y. The YMCA is a great place for individuals and families.

James Durant, also known as Jim, serves as the Housing Director at The Main Place. It is his role to help consumers find, maintain, and live in a safe residence. Jim is a humble and kind person who wants nothing more than to care for others and help them lead a happy life. Glenn Hopkins has been a part of the South End family for about 14 years as the Executive Director of The Main Place, located in the South End. Glenn believes in people coming together to build better lives for themselves, as he and the rest of his staff continue to treat their mental illnesses every day. Glenn does sees The Main Place as a place for connection to others and family. He is passionate about helping others and working to create a more civil society (Bartoshuk, Blake, Cook, Gunn, Schratz and Stark, 2013). --- The South End of Newark, Ohio is an area that is literally and figuratively made up of side streets. The South End is comprised of three district areas that border the south side of the main square of town. It is home to a variety of people, churches, and community organizations that have deep emotional ties in the area. Several families have lived in the South End for generations. Newark itself is a town not unlike many towns that are struggling financially across the United States. It has a rich history, was once bustling with commerce and community involvement, and has been significantly impacted by outsourcing, downsizing and suburban sprawl. The South End has been directly impacted by the closing of schools, stores and industries such as the railroad and the Heisey Glass Company. Where once it was a thriving community and as one participant noted, “complete,” the South End now experiences: high unemployment, low levels of academic achievement beyond high school with dropout rates of around 27%, a population of around 44% renters, and an average income of 35,000.00 for a family of four (Gunn 2103). These podcasts were produced by students enrolled in Professor Anne Crowley's “Technology & Learning” course in collaboration with students in Dr. Amanda M. Gunn’s “Communication and Culture” senior seminar. Many thanks to the South Newark community members who shared their recollections, hopes and dreams: Skip Shoemaker, Norma Francis, Desiree Blake, Mattie Blake, Mattie Blake, Bryan Anderson, Barbara Ford, Earl Harris, Shirley & Wayne Campbell, Betty Meyer, Paula Hatfield, Judy Sayre, Dee Hall, Anne Reese, Judy Davis, Mary & Ginny Grady, Rodney Cook, Amanda Vozzella, Renee Chalfont, Glenn Hopkins, James Durant, Thelma McFarlane, Anna Lou Jones, Sharon Oliver, Deb Crane and the Hupp family.
