Today's episode is one of several featuring some of the artists from the 2023 Kensington & Chelsea Art Week/Trail, for info go to: https://www.kcaw.co.uk or @KCAWlondonIn this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Birungi Kawooya & Bokani (@Birungiart& @bokani)Birungi Kawooya: My art passionately embodies the beauty of the African diaspora with a focus on dance, nature and wellbeing. I take inspiration from Ugandan classical Kiganda dance styles, flash dancing by The Nicholas Brothers and hiplet from Homer Bryant, interpreting these influences in my vibrant collages using layers of Ugandan batik fabrics and cutout card. I enjoy the challenge of capturing these complex and sophisticated dance moves in my 2-dimensional art and am passionate about helping you to express your artistic own vision by creating your own artwork in my Mindful African Art workshops.Bokani: Bokani's work is characterised by spontaneous, vibrant colour, fuelled by an exploration of themes and motifs engaging the viewer intellectually, emotionally and spiritually. Painting has empowered her to move past the childhood loss of both parents to resolve questions of global female identity, black African heritage and belonging.Black Womxn at Rest: In an arresting and repetitive billboard style, this design spells out and depicts Black womxn resting pairing Birungi's Black women figurative style with Bokani's swirling paintings. The choice of bodies at rest will represent the diversity of Black womxn and normalizing everyday Black womanhood at rest. For more information on the Kensington Chelsea Art Week & Trail go tohttps://www.kcaw.co.ukFor more information on the Kensington Chelsea Art Week & Trail go tohttps://www.kcaw.co.ukTo Support this podcast from as little as £3 per month: www.patreon/ministryofartsFor full line up of confirmed artists go to https://www.ministryofarts.orgEmail: ministryofartsorg@gmail.comSocial Media: @ministryofartsorg Hosted on Acast. What does it really mean to have an inclusive business? These days, it seems like the words diversity, inclusivity, and equity run together. But what do these words really mean for the people they affect most, and how can we create a work environment where they can truly thrive? In today's episode, we're talking with Ericka Hines of Every Level Leadership and Black Womxn Thriving. Ericka has devoted her professional life to training foundations and businesses across the country on creating inclusive culture within their businesses. She teaches that everyone - from entry-level employees to CEOs - has the power to make an impact, even if that impact is only in their own mindset. More recently, Ericka has been working on Black Womxn Thriving, a research project designed to help understand how Black womxn exist in workplaces that often undervalue them. In doing this research, Ericka and the team aim to discover how businesses can best create workplaces where Black womxn can thrive, both professionally and personally. Join me in today's episode as we discuss the emotional labor of social justice work, how to steer clear of performative activism, making the commitment to social change in your business, and why making mistakes is a necessary part of the growth process. Listen to episode 365 now! In episode 365 of the Embodied Podcast we discuss: [6:08] Navigating conflicting emotions in life and in social justice work [9:47] How to tell if your activism is performative and how to instead act with intention [17:55] Reading between the lines to truly understand what people mean [25:29] Committing to social change in your business and your work [30:30] Diversity, equity, and inclusivity - what they really are and what matters most [38:17] Practicing Every Level Leadership in your business [46:22] Messing up, how to move past it, and how it can help you grow [50:52] Making meaningful apologies and responding vs. reacting [56:19] Ericka's research through Black Women Thriving For full show notes and resources, head tohttps://untameyourself.com/podcasts/365 About the EMBODIED Podcast with Elizabeth DiAlto Since 2013 I've been developing a body of work that helps women embody self love, healing and wholeness. We do this by focusing on the four levels of consciousness - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. In practical terms this looks like exploring tools and practices to help you tune into the deep wisdom of the body and the knowing of the heart, which I believe are gateways to our souls. Then we cultivate a new relationship with our minds that allows the mind to serve this wisdom and knowing and soul connection, rather than override it, which is what many of us were taught. If you've been doing self help or spiritual development work for a while, these are the types of foundational things that often people overlook in pursuit of fancier concepts that often aren't practical or sustainable. Here, we will focus on building these strong foundations so you can honestly and thoroughly embody self love. If you're feeling it, subscribe to the show, and leave us a review wherever you listen from. You can also keep up with show updates and community discussion on Instagram here.

In this episode of The SpokenWeb Podcast, jamilah malika and Jessica Karuhanga sit down with producer Katherine McLeod to talk about the sounds and sound-based practices that have informed their projects as recipients of the 2020-2021 SpokenWeb Artist-Curator in Residence Award. For her residency, jamilah is building an online archive highlighting Black women sound artists across Canada to provide inspiration and representation for future sound art from Black femmes across Turtle Island. Jessica is creating “a sanctified Black space in the form of a website that celebrates aural, visual and somatic witnessing” through shared audio recordings of personal stories.jamilah and Jessica share two pieces of audio from past works that set the groundwork conceptually and methodologically for their current projects. As the producer of the series ShortCuts on The SpokenWeb Podcast feed, Katherine brings her approach of using an audio clip as the starting point for conversation. When talking with jamilah, they start by listening to the audio composition “Listen to Black Womxn” and, when talking with Jessica, they start by listening to the audio composition, “ALL OF ME.” In between these conversations, Katherine talks with SpokenWeb RA, poet, and spoken word artist Faith Paré about her work with jamilah and Jessica in listening to and searching through the SpokenWeb audio collections with their projects in mind. Questions of the archive and the archival impulse run throughout these conversations about the sound of sound art, archival recordings of voices speaking specifically as Black women and Black non-binary folks, the vocalic body in and as archive, and the agency of the listener. All of these questions start with talking, or, as jamilah says early on, “talking about talking.”SpokenWeb is a monthly podcast produced by the SpokenWeb team as part of distributing the audio collected from (and created using) Canadian Literary archival recordings found at universities across Canada. Lynette Goddard is Professor of Black Theatre and Performance at Royal Holloway, University of London. Their research and teaching is focused in the area of the politics of contemporary Black British theatre and performance, including work on new writing by Black playwrights and contemporary Black productions of canonical plays. In this episode of the podcast Lynette reflects on the experience of undertaking a PhD whilst also working and how the pattern of writing that was developed during that period has proved productive throughout the progression of their career. We then talk about the Phenomenal Women project which Lynette was part of. This was commissioned by Dr Nicola Rollock and grew out of her research work into the experience of black female academics. You can find out more here: https://nicolarollock.com/black-female-profs. The exhibition is documented here: https://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/whats-on/art-exhibitions/phenomenal-women We talk about finding mentors within the academy and Lynette references authors that have been inspirational. These include: bell hooks Audre Lourde Patricia Hill Collins Andrea Davis Lynette encourages PhD students not to be afraid to look outside their discipline - and even outside the academy - to find a community that will support their work. Lynette also emphasizes the importance of finding your “why” and using your sense of the legacy you will leave as a motivational force within the PhD process. A ‘top tip' book from Lynette is to work ‘bird by bird' as outlined in the book Bird by Bird by Anne Lamont. The advice is to set time aside to write and trust that the creativity will be there and your work will develop. Lynette also advises not to judge your work but just to commit to the writing.

How to navigate your blackness your healing, your agency and your value…Profound, informative and deeply spirited chat with a fellow Ghanaian sister, Jocelyn Yeboah-Newton. Jocelyn is a Gender consultant, founder of art/healing organisation Our Naked Truths, and The Communion Podcast. She is a protector of intersectional black femininity, and an explorer of the mental health issues that come with that intersection. Jocelyn is also training to become a therapist herself. We unwrapped many issues, including:what collective healing looks like, life modelling and black femme bodies as the muse, the meaning of sisterhood, sexual trauma and mental health struggles that black womxn face, and what's good on Netflix right now.Definitely give this one a listen.“Having to navigate your gender and your race in a world that doesn't see you as equal is really difficult and so a lot of us do that journey in isolation and shame, not feeling that we can share our story, and so I'd love Our Naked Truths to be able to start delivering that work with young women to show them that they have value and they're not alone and that the things that they're experiencing are not in isolation and have been experienced by many that have come before them. These are the things that we've learnt, and this is for you.” - Jocelyn Yeboah-NewtonFollow Our Naked Truths on IG and check out upcoming eventsSupport the Black Womxn's Therapy FundListen to The Communion Podcast
