The pressure to find purpose can be overwhelming, evoking a spectrum of emotions that range from stress and anxiety to downright fear. In today's episode, Kristen welcomes author, entrepreneur, activist, and all-around powerhouse Liz Bohannon. Liz challenges the conventional narrative around dreaming big, emphasizing the need to reframe messages and integrate work that aligns with our purpose. Liz doesn't just talk about finding your purpose; she empowers you to build it.   Kristen and Liz's incredible conversation introduces the concept of "plucking up" – the courage to face failures and learn from them as you construct a purposeful life. She encourages us to find what we love and dismisses the notion that passion or purpose will magically find us.    Let's look at a few highlights: Kristen and Liz Liz explore the role of curiosity in unlocking a growth mindset, activating the mind, and fostering creativity. Liz challenges the notion that purpose has to be grand, encouraging individuals to find joy in the ordinary and love their average selves. Failure is an inevitable part of being human. While it may never feel good, reframing our perspective can prevent it from being the end of the world. The story behind how Sseko morphed from a wholesale company to a direct sales/network marketing company Liz shares the power of a driven community, highlighting the importance of collective ambition. This conversation isn't just about individual goals but celebrates the need for community.    It's a conversation filled with insights, challenges, and opportunities for personal growth that will undoubtedly fill your cup and inspire you to embrace your purpose and own your average. It's not just about goals; it's about collective ambition, community, and the pursuit of purpose—whether big or small.   Listen to Liz's Podcast Plucking Up To learn more (and shop!) about Sseko Designs head over to their website   Did you hear? Calling all entrepreneurs! This episode has your name written all over it. Paula's friend and Carry Media advisor, Liz Forkin Bohannon, is here for a straight-talk, wide-ranging and laugh-out-loud conversation about the twists and turns along the road to entrepreneurship. In addition to being a sought-after speaker and mom of three, Liz is the cofounder and CEO of Sseko Designs, a socially-conscious fashion brand that provides educational and economic opportunities for women across the globe. But get this - Liz started this brand with zero experience in fashion or entrepreneurism. In fact, in just the season before birthing her business she was a journalist reporting on poverty and conflict in Uganda. Hear how the core tenets of she learned in journalism – staying curious, asking great questions and following the lead – led Liz to the winding and unexpected path of building a business. Liz traces her journey from journalist to farmer to social entrepreneur and shares with Paula how “learning fast, failing fast and pivoting” helped her make her way through the dark, early days when there was little success, support or celebration for the company she was building. Liz also tells Paula why she's a firm believer that we aren't meant to take ourselves too seriously (Sseko means “laughter” in Lugandan)... a totally refreshing reminder, no matter what stage of business building you're in. If you're an entrepreneur or even just dream of being one, you know firsthand that fear is often the most loyal companion. Liz opens up to Paula about her ongoing battle with anxiety as a creative thinker who is “always building in the future.” Find out how she leans into her fear by giving herself permission to fail and why she's so passionate about “owning your average.” Shop Sseko Designs Host a Sseko Designs trunk show Check out Liz's book: “Beginner's Pluck: Build Your Life of Purpose and Impact” Follow Liz on Instagram Learn more about Paula's new company CARRY Media™ and sign up for CARRY™ ALL, an essential weekly newsletter for the working mom that drops every Sunday! In this inspiring, long-form conversation, Sseko Designs founder and social entrepreneur Liz Forkin Bohannon tells the story of how her fair-trade, by-women-for-women lifestyle brand literally began on the back of a motorcycle in Uganda. She also discusses her book Beginner’s Pluck: Build Your Life of Purpose and Impact Now, why she believes leaders need to “channel their inner beginner,” and how gender inequality is just as damaging to men as it is to women. And she dives into the philosophies that have built Sseko into what it is today: That every human deserves to be treated with respect and dignity, and that how we spend our money matters. “As consumers, every dollar we spend is a vote for how we're saying, this is how we want the world to work,” she says. A former journalist, Liz is passionate about conscious consumerism, social justice, creative leadership, gender equity, risk-taking, and empowering women. She believes deeply that business is a powerful platform for social change and that girls are our future.

So she quit her job, bought a one way ticket to Uganda and ten years later, she runs a collaboration of women on both sides of the pond that have built a beautiful community of belonging and empowerment that she could never have dreamed up, even if she had tried.Liz brings her wit and passion to this conversation with The Two Jess(es) as she talks candidly about the pressure and angst that comes with believing the 'Passion Propaganda' instead of accepting the reality that passions and visions are really built with hard work and commitment to seeing things through. Her message of extolling creativity over criticism and 'owning your average' are a breath of fresh air in the rat race of self-help and the never ending struggle of self-improvement.This is an inspiring conversation that left both Jess(es) energized in the best possible way- and they know it will do the same for you.Meet Liz!Liz Bohannon is the founder of Sseko Designs, a socially conscious fashion brand, and the author of Beginner's Pluck. Speaking part-time to grow your full-time business can be a surefire way to expand your reach, maximize your impact and your bottom line. Our guest is a living example of this and she joins us to share her journey. Liz Bohannon is a very successful keynote speaker but speaking itself is secondary to her full-time gig. Primarily, she is the founder and CEO of a lifestyle jewelry company called Sseko Designs. On today’s The Speaker Lab, she tells us how speaking moves the needle of her lifestyle business and whether she is representing herself when she speaks or her business. We finish with what value there is in experiences themselves, including one of the riskiest and craziest stories you may ever hear! Listen in to hear that story along with her passion, energy and insights on episode 303 with Liz Bohannon. THE FINER DETAILS OF THIS SHOW: How do you harness the power of your own stories? How to translate your personal experiences into topics for your audience. Why sharing your message is an act of service to others. When does she speak on behalf of herself and when does she speak on behalf of Sseko? What questions should you ask to pinpoint the best speaking events for your business? Should you build your business and your service for one person? What do we need instead of more content? Why you should give yourself time to let the "wow" set in, before the "how". And so much more! For our first episode, we’ve brought in Ben Bohannon this week. Ben runs one of the finest fashion brands in Portland – Sseko Designs – uses fashion to create opportunities for women across the globe. An excellent and first reason for me to start our show with Ben is his purpose in starting this company. He profoundly believes the purpose will drive value in the future economy. Through their employment scholarship program, he and his wife, Liz Bohannon, the co-founder of Sseko, have enabled 100’s women to continue to their University.Bloomberg Businessweek has named Sseko one of the top social enterprises in America, and its products have been featured in Vogue, Fitness, Fast Company, Huffington Post, and more. One thing that Ben stresses out is “Testing, Testing, Testing.” You always need to test it out; otherwise, there is no point in dreaming. Just take that extra leap and see what works best for you.Show Notes and Links:[3:15] How Sseko was started?[7:12] Handling the manufacturing facilities[14:27] How Product Customization can change the way you interact with your customers?[16:18] How to address the shipping challenges when you have the facility in Oversees (Uganda)?[22:22] How launching a direct to sales platform on Magento helped their business scale.[26:00] How important is funding and do you really need one? My guest this week is Liz Bohannon, the CEO and founder of Sseko Designs, a fair trade, socially conscious fashion brand that is providing dignified jobs in developing nations around the world. Sseko Designs also gives university scholarships to the brightest, young female leaders in East Africa. This is actually Liz’s second time on the show! You can hear our first conversation all the way back at episode #28 in March of 2017! Over the years, Liz and I have become dear friends and it was so great having her back on the show! Join me to hear about Sseko Designs, Liz’s first book Beginners Pluck, and how Liz has lived a life of purpose, passion, and impact.    4:53 – The Liz 201 (A Business Model Change) Liz has been running her ethical fashion brand, Sseko Designs for ten years. Three years ago, the organization experienced a fundamental shift as a company when they decided to shut down their wholesale channel. They knew they were creating change for women all over the world with fair wages, education, and strong communities, but recognized that they were not fostering the same community on the retail side of their business yet. When Sseko started 10 years ago, the term “social enterprise” didn’t exist. Sseko started to wonder if they could take the “business of good” and put it into the hands of regular, everyday consumers. They launched Sseko Fellows, a social selling model to put products in the hands of women to sell Sseko products. It was a very small-scale beginning, but taught Sseko how to build a better model for women to earn a legitimate income. Liz knew that there were more women who also wanted to dream big to help women who also want to build their own businesses. Sseko Fellows evolved into a social enterprise with teams that create full-time, fair-waged jobs for a year for artisans across the globe as well as university scholarships for the brightest female scholars in East Africa. When people are provided dignified, fair-wage opportunity, they are far less likely to be trafficked into an illegal labor market. Often those who fall victim to these crimes are answering fake job ads, desperate to get out of poverty and unaware that it’s a trap until it’s too late. When basic needs are met through safe jobs, the cycle of evil and abuse can be stopped. 15:49 – A Woman Connected to Her Purpose While there are so many volunteer and non-profit causes that help make the world better, Liz and her team also recognized that women have more time and energy to contribute without burning out when they are equipped with a competitive salary and business resources. If the way a woman contributes to her passion and purpose also generates an income, you free her to focus on social change work while making sure her childcare needs, bills, mortgage payments, car payments, groceries, etc. are not going to be a burden.  Something really magical happens when we know that there are others who want to show up and cheer for us. That is the atmosphere Sseko strives to create. When people, particularly women, start new endeavors, the world often sits and waits for them to fail. Sseko women are encouraged to dream big with support from a like-minded sisterhood that helps set them up for success!  In the last few years, the Sseko community both in the United States Fellows Program and the Scholarship and Business programs in Africa have fostered a global family of women supporting women and championing each other through community, not competition. If you don’t find community and make an impact, Sseko will fully refund your starter kit investment, which is only $150 for $400 worth of product. Working with Sseko not only brings financial freedom, enjoyable work, and finding a purpose, but the most common response from Sseko women about what they get out of the program is that they’ve found genuine female friendships to help in hard times and celebrate in the good. 29:48 – Become a Sseko Fellow If you are interested in learning more, you too can join me as a Sseko Fellow! All you have to do is go to https://ssekodesigns.com/mollystillman and click the “Join Now” link at the top menu bar! 32:05 – Fun Bonus: You should probably all check out Liz’s cooking show with her two-year-old son, Theo on Instagram (@lizbohannon) 33:05 - Beginner's Pluck: Build Your Life of Purpose and Impact Now Liz just wrote her first book called Beginner’s Pluck. I read it in a day and a half. It’s not your typical book on business, it’s much better. This is the book you’ll want to help you truly grow right where you are rather than just hearing feel good mantras. Finding your passion isn’t a magical, one-time moment. Your life matters and you can make a difference, but it doesn’t just happen naturally for anyone. Liz shares new ways of thinking about things that leaves people relieved and removes the pressure around achievement and shifts it to waking up to one’s own voice. It’s a model of tapping into people’s lives and meaning rather than their fears and emotions for short-term bursts of engagement. We can combine our faith with action and work. When you put in the work, God will bless that work. It applies to goal setting and risk taking as well. Complacency and fear-driven desires for safety to keep from looking ridiculous or taking risks that are too big removes the opportunity for God to show up and do things we couldn’t dream up on our own. If we’re always playing it safe and our primary concern is survival, we limit our potential. If you spend all your time dodging failure, you’ll never chase after the “what if” dreams. Don’t forget that failure is a necessary and unavoidable process. That experience leads you to the moment when your dream finally “clicks.” If you’re stuck in overwhelm, this book is for you. Your dream is within your grasp right where you are, whether in the good or the messy. Liz has hopes that leaders will subscribe to this way of thinking to help their teams, employees, clients, etc. There is even a prison using Beginner’s Pluck to turn lives around! You’ve got to start. Even if it’s an ugly start. You don’t get to evolve until you put yourself out there for the first time. An immature and over-inflated sense of ego happens we think we’ll automatically be successful right out of the gate. 55:55 - Getting To Know Our Guest Find out what stunt Liz pulled off after her talk at the Global Leader’s Summit. At 1:07:52 to learn walk Liz would choose as her “walk up song,” what she thinks we’ll be nostalgic for in forty years, her favorite lipstick color right now (because it’s so much fun) and of course, what it means to Liz to run a business with purpose. Memorable Quotes: 15:51 - “A woman on a mission who is connected to her purpose, who is connected to her passion, can literally change the world.” 28:22 “We are going to be a community of women who are collectively ambitious. You do not have to worry about too much or dreaming too big. You get to be surrounded by people who say: ‘This is how I can support you.’ “ 38:03 - “Once you have peace and an understanding of what it actually looks like to build a life of purpose, passion, and impact, that actually propels you forward.” 55:14 – “Me messing up doesn’t mean I’m broken; it doesn’t mean I’m not the right person for the job. It means that I’m trying to do something that is difficult.” “You only have the opportunity to fail when you choose to do something that is a little bit out of your reach.” “We started to wonder if Sseko could be a company that pioneers this idea of democratizing social entrepreneurship and business for good.” Connect with Sseko Designs: https://www.instagram.com/ssekodesigns/ https://ssekodesigns.com/mollystillman https://www.facebook.com/ssekodesigns http://www.instagram.com/lizbohannon About Liz: Liz Forkin Bohannon is the founder of Sseko Designs and the author the book Beginner’s Pluck: Build your life of purpose, passion and impact now. In her early twenties, Liz Forkin Bohannon identified an “integrity gap” between what she claimed she cared about—issues facing women living in extreme poverty—and how she conducted her daily life. So, she quit her job and bought a one-way ticket to Uganda. Fast forward to 2019, Liz is the CEO of Sseko Designs, a fair-trade, fair-wage fashion brand employing and empowering women in Uganda and the U.S.! In this segment of our Women Making it Happen in Their Careers series, you’ll hear how Liz’s “beginners pluck” helped her “actively co-create the world she wanted to live in” and how YOU can support Sseko’s mission! Spoiler alert: supporting Sseko’s missions involves shopping for gorgeous bags, jewelry, and shoes—what a fantastic way to help empower women! P.S. In our conversation, Liz and I realized we’re reading the same book at the moment so we meandered into a few psychological and sociological topics just for fun e.g. how comparing ourselves to others objectifies them, why risk taking is essential for building self-esteem, and how an inadvertent indoctrination of cognitive distortions is related to the rise in depression and anxiety in the U.S.

Find out why Liz has banned the word “luck” in her company, and why she believes we should “own our average” instead trying so hard to be extraordinary. Liz encourages us to “dream small” and take little steps. Liz is a wise, fun and passionate woman and leader I believe in.

What a fun episode! I'm introducing you to my new friend, Liz Bohannon, she's the Founder and CEO of Sseko Designs. Liz is changing the world through socially conscious fashion (and flying through the air in Spanx in front of thousands.)    Tune in to hear why she'll never run a chicken farm again, how she uses sandals to send women to college, and her major life decision that made her entire family think she was crazy.   In this episode we discuss: 1. Why most of us are just average joes--and that's a great thing! 2. The magic a novice brings to the table. 3. How dreaming small is more likely to change the world.   Favorite quotes: 1. Ultimately we build beautiful lives, businesses, and families when we consistently show up and the idea of that not waiting for luck but instead saying I'm gonna be a person of pluck is really intriguing. 2. I think that's the power of community when you hopefully hear my story and hundreds of other people's stories that say,  “I wasn't equipped, I didn't have the connections, I faced a lot of difficulties, but I still did it. I think that enables people to show up for their own lives.” 3. I want to celebrate the average and owning your average is not a call to complacency.    In this episode I answer these questions: 1. How do you not let information overwhelm you? (42:45) 2. How do I finally break out of a pattern of sin? (45:05) 3. Do you use or recommend a personality test when you hire people? (49:26)   Links to great things we discussed: 1. Liz Bohannon , Sseko 2. Beginner's Pluck 3. Queen 4. The Greatest Showman 5. To Stop A Warlord 6. True&Co 7. Call The Midwife 8. Freedom 9. Is it possible to have a healthy family while building a successful business? That’s the question at the heart of this week’s episode with Ben and Liz Bohannon of Sseko Designs. If you're ever looking for an excuse to sit and talk with the people you most admire, start a podcast. This week I am talking to the amazing impact entrepreneur, Liz Bohannon. She lives in Portland, Oregon but her reach extends across continents. She is the Co-Founder and CEO of Sseko Designs, an ethical fashion brand. The amazing thing is that they work directly with women in East Africa and help a lot of them earn money to go to college.   Sisterhood of the Traveling Kaftan Liz and I met at the Wild Hearts Conference. When we were in the green room backstage, I literally asked her if I could try on the dress she was wearing. Yes, that was the start of our friendship. I never thought a kaftan would look good on me, but it did! And this dress fits all sizes from 0 to 16. How incredible is that? “I didn't think I was going to kaftan evangelize, at least not this early in the podcast.”   Enneagram Insights Is anyone else obsessed with personality tests?? We come to the conclusion that if you're a bit uncomfortable with your enneagram score, it means you probably got the right score.  Wanna know what numbers Liz and I are? You gotta listen to the episode! Enneagrams help Liz to recognize everyone's unique contributions to this complex world we live in. “I am delighted by difference.”   Growing Community   “Come be a part of what we're doing, but don't do it out of pity or charity. Do it out of a sense of camaraderie and excitement about the future that we're building together.”Sseko Designs has a Fellow program where people in the United States can be involved with the brand by hosting events and representing Sseko in their own community. Liz found that there was a need for opportunity for women in the United States as well as East Africa. Recently Sseko Designs brought 10 United States Fellows to Uganda. The women of Sseko and the fellows got a chance to share their stories with one another. How powerful is that? “You're not going on a mission trip, you are going to meet your colleagues that are alongside of you and that are co-creating a brighter future with you.” Liz is constantly asking herself, “Are we doing this in a way that is consistent, true to the core of our mission, and our why?”   For those of you who are inspired by what you've learned here today, you can make a difference. Liz loves to see inspired women inspire other women. It starts a chain of fulfillment and passion for life. “If she can do it, why can't I?” I hope you're feeling as absolutely inspired as I am. Liz is such a genuine soul and I had so much fun talking with her. If you enjoyed this episode, I want to invite you to subscribe, rate, and review the podcast. It would mean so much! This episode is brought to you by the free PDF guide called “While You Wait.” It is full of resources that I personally found to be very helpful while I was finding my ‘why' behind waiting until marriage to have sex. Liz is the founder and CEO of Sseko Designs, an ethical fashion brand that works to educate and empower women around the world. She joins Charlie on the show today to talk about how and why her brand started with employing high-potential women from Uganda, and what it does today for every woman in the Sseko network. Key Takeaways: [2:30] - Liz went to journalism school, and while there, she became interested in issues facing women and girls who were living in areas of extreme poverty and post-conflict zones. She moved to Uganda, and discovered a unique issue facing women there. During a transition period in their schooling, they had to return to their villages where they were competing for jobs with men in the village, and they also lost a lot of social support to continue on to University. In response to this problem, Liz started Sseko. [5:03] - She committed to three young women that if they made her sandals for the next three months, they would get to university in the fall. When she decided she was going to start a sponsorship-based non-profit charity, her research shifted her focus to something that was more about sustainability, job creation, and contributing to the export market. She tried a few other business ideas, and sandals worked. At the start of her business, Liz wasn’t really passionate about the business side, but over the course of her career, the business aspects have become something that fuels her. [8:45] - When starting her business, an important thing was recognizing the abundance of resources in both the United States and Uganda. For Liz, it was a two-way street between the material resources available in the US, and young people in need of a job in Uganda. What good businesses and marketplaces do well is come together to combine their resources to create something sustainable and mutually beneficial. [10:35] - Liz and Charlie talk about American culture, and the idea of building up the economies in these developing countries rather than exporting their labor and resources elsewhere. One of the most beneficial human interactions is one that’s mutually respectful. What Liz is trying to do with Sseko is create mutually beneficial relationships, from trade to the relationships between the people who work for the company. [12:50] - Liz talks about how the journey in Africa of empowering women to be equal partners in the marketplace compares to the journey we’ve been on in the US. The two journeys are pretty similar, and it all comes down to a power dynamic. There is a belief that the more women are empowered, engaged, and lifted up, the less power men will have. This is a false dichotomy. The challenges women are facing in East Africa are more dramatic and obvious than the challenges women in the US are facing. Liz talks about some of these real challenges that the women of Sseko face during the nine months they go back to their villages before University. [18:55] - Liz talks about their business model. Rather than a portion of the profits going to the women, they are a paid a monthly salary based on what they do and what their job is within the company. This salary would be about 2-3 times more than the proposed minimum wage in Uganda. [21:30] - At the original conception of her venture, Liz was very against it being a business (rather than a charity). She felt that most businesses contributed to a system where people were divided by who was privileged and who was oppressed. Liz didn’t want to be involved in that system, but when she got to Uganda, she realized that the tool of capitalism in the marketplace in business was amoral. It’s about how you do it, the decisions you make, and the spirit in which you do those things that can contribute to a system that creates mutually beneficial relationships. [24:50] - Though there are many businesses and business people that abuse the system, there are many more, like Liz, who use their business to create good in the world. For Liz, it was when she was in Uganda and thinking about her specific goals with her project that she realized her goals meant starting a business. Her model is capitalism for good. [27:45] - Liz’s biggest personal challenge as an entrepreneur is focus. Liz often finds herself bending the rules and going after the exception without realizing the cost on the overall mission. Her team helps keep her check and maintain focus so they are able to continue to help the most amount of people. [31:30] - The biggest challenge on the business side has been being a vertically integrated company. They currently run two different models - a manufacturing company and a sales/ distribution marketing company. These companies require different finance models, ways of running, and types of employees. So far, it’s a worthy challenge they are continuing to pursue. Charlie and Liz talk about what would have to happen for Sseko to reconsider this model. [35:50] - What does the future of retail look like? This is something that Liz has become interested in over the past few years. At Sseko, they shifted their model to be a direct sales model (women become spokespeople for their brands in their own communities and sell the product in their communities), as retail has moved away from brick and mortar to something more personal and social. E-commerce is taking over, but that takes away some of the experiential side of retail. Their direct sales model creates an engaging and community-oriented way of shopping. It’s almost like the future of retail is going back to the past. [41:52] - The direct sales model for Sseko specifically means that a purchase will help a woman in Uganda go to college, but also helps support the family of the woman in your community you bought a pair of sandals or a purse from. When we realize we’re all creators and makers and we all can contribute, then we start to break down the idea that we can’t buy or sell stuff to our friends. [43:10] - Liz’s invitation to listeners is to join Sseko; if you’re interested in being an entrepreneur, you can be a part of their community of dreamers, doers, and impact entrepreneurs. If you already have a product, think about how you can make an impact on your local community and in the global community. With the money she'd saved from babysitting jobs and a sewing machine her parents gave her for her birthday, Liz Forkin Bohannon began Sseko Sandals, a company in Uganda where women earn the money they need to go to university. Liz Forkin Bohannon was just named as a finalist in Cartier's Women's Initiative Awards. Liz was my first interview for Pursuit of Spark, here's her delightful and inspiring story. Right after college, Liz went to Uganda to work for the Cornerstone Leadership Academy. She fell in love with the students, who came from poor families, and asked the school's founder what she could do for them once she returned to the US. He asked her to figure out a way to help young women earn the money to go on to college. Liz's first idea was a chicken farm -- and we're lucky she quickly abandoned that concept and moved on to create sandals that could be made in Uganda and worn by women all over the U.S.
