A new report finds a “staggering” number of buildings missing required permits, but the Turkish House was the only one of its size approved to open without a valid fire safety plan. Plus, the head of the Board of Elections is facing scrutiny after city investigators found he created a hostile work environment. Also, WNYC's Michael Hill and Liam Quigley look into the impact of New York City's congestion pricing program. And finally, a New York-based artist talks about healing and community through dance.
My guests on this episode are NY/NJ Port Authority manager and jazz vocalist, Steve Comity; and NYC Board of Education Administrator/Educator and Jazz drummer, pianist, percussionist and singer Eric Frazier. Mr. Cromity poignantly relate his harrowing journey from the 73rd floor of the NY World Trade Center to safety after hearing the planes crash into the buildings on 9/11/2001. He did not realize the life threatening danger he was in while descending those steps. It is a truly gut wrenching, powerful experience to have in ones life. Mr Fraizer talks about his experience being a Principal in the NY Board of Education school system. He was a remarkably focused educator that made a difference with his students and staff. Both gentlemen got deeply entrenched in the New York jazz scene upon their retirement from their respective careers. It's a wonderful story about changing the downward trajectory of your life course, perseverance and setting goals, while being true to yourself. At this week's Round Table, Emmanuel, Hannah, and Heba spoke with Esmeralda Simmons, Fellow in the Advanced Leadership Institute at Harvard University and Founder of the Center for Law and Social Justice at Medgar Evers College, a community-based racial justice advocacy center that focuses on legal work and research on civil rights and domestic human rights violations. Ms Simmons is an accomplished lawyer and public servant who has spent decades fighting for human and civil rights on the federal, state, and municipal levels. Recently retired, she advocated for equity in public education, voting, policing and the child welfare system as the Center's executive director for 34 years. In addition, she has served on several major public boards in New York City government, including the NYC Board of Education and the NYC Districting Commission. Outside of this work, Ms. Simmons also volunteers her skills and currently serves on the board of directors of UPROSE, a climate justice organization; the Council of Elders for African Cultural Heritage; and Little Sun People, an African-centered early childhood education center. In the recent past, served on the Boards of several national organizations: the Applied Research Center (now “Race Forward”); Vallecitos Mountain Retreat Center; the Child Welfare Fund; and, the Poverty and Race Research Action Council (PRRAC). Ms. Simmons has also served as counsel or co-counsel on numerous major federal Voting Rights Act cases and election law cases and has secured victories before the United States Supreme Court. She is a member of the Metropolitan Black Bar and American Bar Associations, Ile Ase, Inc., and the New York Voting Rights Consortium. As members of the public are asked to stay home, and keep distant from others to help stop the spread of COVID-19, what about those in jail or in prison, where inmates are most often housed in close dormitory quarters, with limited access to hygiene products like hand sanitizer? An outbreak in a jail could prove fatal for aging inmates, and could threaten the health of communities outside, who could be infected by corrections officers or recently-released former inmates. On Today's Show, we look at a notorious New York City jail on Riker's Island as a bellweather for how jails and prisons around the country will have to react to the current public health crisis. Almost forty cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed inside Rikers, a number that is expected to grow. Robert Cohen M.D., corrections health expert and member of the NYC Board of Correction, and Jose Saldana, director of the Release Aging People in Prison Campaign, discuss how to respond respond, including releasing inmates who are most vulnerable. NOTE: Brian introduces Dr. Cohen as a commissioner of the New York City Board of Corrections, an oversight body independent from the Department of Corrections, which runs the city's jails. Dr. Cohen is a member of the Board of Corrections.
In this episode, Kayla chops it up with Kelley Green! Kelley Green is a self-love enthusiast, certified yoga instructor, podcast host, published author, and creative writer for her own personal lifestyle brand. Kelley impacts the world by providing people with the guidance and resources to see themselves in a way that amplifies their self-worth. Through her content, created as self-love quotes, blog posts, speaking topics, videos, etc., she introduces the importance of self-care, and creating a lifestyle and belief system that affirms the love and celebration all women deserve. In 2017, Kelley debuted her first book “Perfectly Imperfect”, a collection of poetry and prose laced with gripping poems and inspirational tidbits of reflective experiences infused with valuable wisdom. Each piece reminds the reader of life’s only constant: change and life’s key to happiness: self-love. Through creative writing, Kelley learned how to overcome the grief of three loved ones in her family in one year and her battle with living in the unknown with society's pressures of success on her back. She now uses the knowledge she’s gained to help other women battling with self-doubt, a lack of confidence, and an uncertain sense of direction in their life. Born and raised in South Jamaica, Queens, New York, she is no stranger to seeing faces that resemble hers while also witnessing the pain and challenges of the women inflicted by loss, trauma, and a vacant sense of self. This is why her work is designed to guide creative women of color to a life wrapped in confidence, self-love, healing, and alignment with their purpose and true selves. Kelley’s coaching work is strengthened by the 200-hour Vinyasa Yoga Training Certification that she carries in order to introduce her clients to transformational breath-mind-body awareness, divine self-love, and a sense of community as a yoga practitioner. She’s an advocate for giving creators a place to voice their experiences through the podcast she co-hosts called the WYL Take Ownership podcast, which is in partnership with Univision Broadcast Network. Kelley has landed partnerships and speaking opportunities with companies such as Allstate, Whose Your Landlord, Women’s Empowerment Groups, NYC Board of Education, and several Non-Profit Organizations, in New York City. In this episode we discuss: The challenges of healing from loss. Why boundaries are critical for self love. Why taking the first step towards your goal is the most important step you can take. How journaling can help to unlock repressed feelings and assist in your growth. The struggles of relationships as you're continuing to grow. And so much more! Imagine being told constantly that you’ll never get out of your situation. Or that your environment, the family or neighborhood you were born into, is who you are. In this episode, we’re sharing the journey of Stanley Richards, a criminal justice reform advocate, acting Vice Chair of NYC Board of Correction and the Executive Vice President of The Fortune Society. Stanley cycled in and out of jail until he was arrested for robbery in 1986. He was sentenced to 9 years for his crime and spent 4 and a half years in prison. In this riveting story of hope and breaking free from the shackles of circumstance, Stanley is a remarkable example of what your life could be, if you don’t give up on yourself. Today, he’s a role model and inspiring leader at the helm of The Fortune Society — a nonprofit organization whose mission is to support the successful reentry of formerly incarcerated individuals into society. Today’s interview is with my first non-musical guest, Holly LeCraw. She’s a Boston-based author of two books, The Swimming Pool and The Half Brother, and is currently working on a third. I met Holly in the spring of 2016 during my brief stint as an amateur journalist, covering the debacle that was the New York Presidential Primary election. You can review some of the work we did together at nyelectionjustice.org, putting together a timeline of the failures of the NYC Board of Elections leading up to and following the primary. During our discussion, we reflect on the work we did with New York Election Justice, and how we’ve been staying active and maintaining our sanity since Trump’s election. I hope to have more members of the New York Election Justice team on the show in future episodes, but Holly and I became very close friends during our work together, so she was my first choice for diving back into this period of my life.
