We've touched on the theory of self-determination on the show before, but today, I'm thrilled to dedicate an entire episode to this important topic. Joining me for this deeper dive is Dr. Gina Riley, an expert in self-determination theory and motivation. This conversation will resonate with so many of you because it beautifully ties into themes we often explore here, like low-demand parenting and fostering our kids' natural passions and strengths. In this episode, Gina explains the theory of self-determination and dives into the science behind why it's so impactful, particularly for neurodivergent kids. We explore how it connects with autonomy-supportive parenting and discuss the three tenets of cognitive evaluation theory, which examines what fosters intrinsic motivation. We also tackle the hot topic of whether extrinsic motivators like stickers and rewards have a place and how to genuinely connect with our kids' interests—even when they differ from our own. About Dr. Gina Riley Gina Riley, Ph.D., is an educational psychologist, Program Director, and Clinical Professor of Adolescent Special Education at CUNY – Hunter College. She has conducted significant research on homeschooling and unschooling, an educational method and philosophy that advocates student intrinsic motivation as a primary means for learning. In addition to her research on self-directed learning environments, Dr. Riley has expertise in Supported Decision Making, an alternative to guardianship for students with disabilities. She is a faculty advisor for Supported Decision Making New York, promoting autonomy and self-determination for individuals with disabilities. Dr.Riley also has extensive experience in online, hybrid, and HyFlex education, having been actively involved in the field since 1998. Her contributions to educational psychology and alternative education models have been influential in shaping contemporary discussions on personalized and flexible learning approaches. Dr. Riley is the author of numerous academic articles and three books, including Unschooling:Exploring Learning Beyond the Classroom (Palgrave, 2020), The Homeschooling Starter Guide (Simon & Schuster, 2021), and The Joys of Self Determined Learning: A Collection of Essays (Ricci Publishing, 2022). She is the current President-Elect of the New York State Association of Teacher Educators. Things you'll learn from this episode What self-determination theory is, and how it's connected to intrinsic motivation Why a sense of competence, autonomy, and relatedness, as outlined in the cognitive evaluation theory, are crucial for motivation Why it matters that parents focus on facilitating autonomy and decision-making in their children What the science says about how and why intrinsic motivation leads to better academic and social outcomes in adulthood How intrinsic and extrinsic motivations can coexist and why it's important that they're balanced Resources mentioned Dr. Gina Riley's website Gina on Instagram Gina on Twitter Unschooling: Exploring Learning Beyond the Classroom by Dr. Gina Riley The Homeschooling Starter Guide: How to Create and Adapt the Best Education Action Plan for Your Needs by Dr. Gina Riley NYS Decision Making Curriculum (free decision making curriculum for schools and homeschools I Will Die on This Hill: Autistic Adults, Autism Parents, and the Children Who Deserve a Better World by Meghan Ashburn and Jules Edwards Meghan Ashburn and Jules Edwards on Autistic Adults, Autism Parents, and the Children Who Deserve a Better World (Tilt Parenting podcast) Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us by Dan Pink The intrinsic motivation of Richard Ryan and Edward Deci The Self-Driven Child, with William Stixrud and Ned Johnson (Tilt Parenting podcast) The Self-Driven Child: The Science and Sense of Giving Your Kids More Control Over Their Lives by Dr. William Stixrud and Ned Johnson Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to Episode 128 of the Think UDL podcast: HyFlex Love Affair with Kenyada McLeod. Kenyada McLeod is Associate Professor of Web Design at Brightpoint Community College in the central Virginia region. I first came in contact with her work when she helped me through the QM certification process years ago when I had my First Year Seminar course QM certified. It was then we struck up a friendship around UDL and kept in touch over social media. Just recently, we crossed paths again when I saw she had written about her HyFLex model in practice and I decided it was time to interview her for the podcast to learn about how she has integrated UDL into her HyFlex world. Her teaching in the HyFlex model has been exemplary and is something I think we have needed to revisit on the podcast so I have invited her to talk about how she has been able to remove barriers to learning for her students and for faculty as well. Tune into this conversation to learn more about how to help today's faculty and students who have varied demands on their time survive and thrive in a HyFlex learning environment.

Recorded May 12, 2023 Well, it finally happened; a big school is going all in on VR in a big, general ed program. Goggles on, please. Arizona State is replacing their introductory biology lab classes with VR. Chris is not amused. Then, we review recent technologies to determine if they are just marketing or if these are real, long-term solutions. Marc doesn't like term “broadcast” anywhere near your PTZ cameras and Zoom events, Chris says USB-C is just marketing and a real thing, Justin reviews recent “automatic” setup utilities for DSPs and network switches, Jamie really has it in for MTRs, and Larry notes where Hyflex falls short. Finally, the AV SuperFriends are taking over #AVintheAM on Twitter. Look for that on May 21, 2023, so if you're listening to this after that date, that's why Twitter shut down forever on May 22. During the pandemic, many colleges and universities embraced a form of blended learning called HyFlex, to mixed reviews. Is it likely to be part of colleges' instructional strategy going forward? This week's episode of The Key explores HyFlex, in which students in a classroom learn synchronously alongside a cohort of peers studying remotely. HyFlex moved from a fringe phenomenon to the mainstream during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the experience was imperfect at best, for professors and students alike. This conversation about the teaching modality features two professors who have both taught in the HyFlex format and done research on its impact. Enilda Romero-Hall is an associate professor in the learning, design and technology program at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville who got her doctorate in a HyFlex program and taught using it pre-pandemic. Alanna Gillis, an assistant professor of sociology at St Lawrence University, had her first Hyflex experiences during COVID-19. Hosted by Inside Higher Ed Editor Doug Lederman. Now, Darren Harbutt is not new to the teachers‘ Lift. Back in 2020, he featured in one of our early episodes when HKU hosts, Phil Smythe and Aditi Jhaveri, where he shared his expertise on blended learning with a focus on e-assessment. Now it's the turn of Dawn Gillis and Eric Tindall asking the questions, as we take a look in the rear view mirror of the last two years and ask whether there have been any silver-linings to all the hurdles we've faced since the days when zooming required a telephoto lens. In this illuminating discussion, Darren introduces us to the exciting new world of HyFlex, where in-class instruction meets on- and off-line learning, and leaves us asking the question, will this become the new normal.

About Today's Show One of the big changes that's happening at Seneca College is the teaching modality. While traditional classes have all been in person, and during COVID classes have just about entirely been online, as we return to Seneca we have more options. One of those options is called Flex, or HyFlex. In this kind of class, the professor will always conduct the class in a classroom, and students can either attend the class in person, view the class online, or watch the recorded class whenever that works for them. Today's show focuses on how Flex classes really look (since many of us will be experiencing them) Also in this episode we talk about: 1. What setting up a Flex classroom really looks like 2. Some of the technology challenges that have been overcome 3. The benefits of Flex and in-person instruction. 4. So much more.... More about Today's Guests, Professors Tatiana Mighiu, and Raghad Kamel TATIANA MIGHIU teaches in the Opticianry Diploma Program at Seneca College. Among her course are Introduction to Optics, Eyeglass Dispensing Lab and Contact Lens Theory I & II and Contact Lens Lab I & II courses. Professor Mighiu is also the Opticianry Diploma Program Coordinator. Professor Mighiu earned her Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering at Polytechnic University of Romania, and then furthered her education at Seneca, in the Opticianry Diploma Program. We are also joined by Professor Raghad Kamel, who teaches a variety of courses in the School of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering Technology, and Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering Technology. Professor Kamel received her Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science at the University of Baghdad in Iraq, and then earned her PhD in Mechanical Engineering at Ryerson University here in Toronto. A pandemia mudou o ambiente educacional. A educação avançou significativamente no mundo digital.

More thoughts on what I need to change about my classes and teaching as I move to the Hybrid-Flexible format.
My initial thoughts about the Hybrid-Flexible course format, which I'll be using this spring in all my courses. It promises to greatly increase student agency and flexibility, but comes with some additional work which I'll begin reporting on as I prepare for and implement this change.
As classrooms around the world usher in modernity and indeed, the future of education, teachers everywhere are grappling with the new hybrid teaching model — blending online and offline elements to support inclusion of the students who can't be physically present — and seeking support. With the start of the new school year, many of us have to develop their teaching design. The purpose of this podcast is to create a useful resource for teachers, lecturers, seminar tutors and other educators who need a helping hand coming to terms with this new way of teaching. So we'll be looking at a more practical approach to designing your hyflex model today. For more information visit my blog: profmanagement.de Thank you for listening. A lot has been talked about online teaching and learning. The global pandemic sweeping the planet has certainly accelerated the need for classroom transformation and innovation. But, what can we expect from Hybrid Teaching in 2020? When we experience the reopening of schools and universities, teachers will have to prepare for both in-class students and others calling in via the internet. In this episode, we will talk about the "Hyflex model“.For more information visit my blog: profmanagement.de Thank you for listening. Welcome to Episode 37 of the ThinkUDL podcast. Today's episode is part of a Summer 2020 series on UDL in online environments. I have the opportunity to speak with the creator of the Hybrid-Flexible (HyFlex) Course Design model, Brian Beatty, who is an Associate Professor of Instructional Technologies in the Department of Equity, Leadership Studies and Instructional Technologies at San Francisco State University. Brian's primary areas of interest and research include social interaction in online learning, flipped classroom implementation, and developing instructional design theory for Hybrid-Flexible learning environments. At SFSU, Dr. Beatty pioneered the development and evaluation of the HyFlex course design model for blended learning environments, implementing a “student-directed-hybrid” approach to better support student learning. In today's episode, Brian and I will discuss the values and principles of the HyFlex course design model, along with its history and implementation in several contexts. Is the HyFlex model right for you? Brian will help us process the questions one needs to answer in order to determine if this is the right model for you and provide you with the resources to get started. All of the resources that Brian and Lillian mention today can be found on Episode 37 of the ThinkUDL.org web page. Thank you for joining the conversation on the ThinkUDL podcast!
