To coincide with the re-release of Dynasty in audiobook, now with Tom Holland himself narrating, we have the book's introduction for you to enjoy.   Dynasty, the sequel to Rubicon, is a dazzling portrait of Rome's first imperial dynasty, tracing the full astonishing story of its rule of the world. Ranging from the great capital rebuilt in marble by Augustus to the dank and barbarian-haunted forests of Germany, it is populated by a spectacular cast: murderers and metrosexuals, adulterers and druids, scheming grandmothers and reluctant gladiators.   Dynasty's re-released audiobook, narrated by our very own Tom Holland, is OUT NOW in the UK. _____ Dynasty continues Rubicon's story, opening where that book ended: with the murder of Julius Caesar. This is the period of the first and perhaps greatest Roman Emperors and it's a colorful story of rule and ruination, running from the rise of Augustus through to the death of Nero. Holland's expansive history also has distinct shades of I Claudius, with five wonderfully vivid (and in three cases, thoroughly depraved) Emperors—Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, and Nero—featured, along with numerous fascinating secondary characters. Intrigue, murder, naked ambition and treachery, greed, gluttony, lust, incest, pageantry, decadence—the tale of these five Caesars continues to cast a mesmerizing spell across the millennia. _______ *The Rest Is History LIVE in the U.S.A.* If you live in the States, we've got some great news: Tom and Dominic will be performing throughout America in November, with shows in San Francisco, L.A., Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Boston and New York.  *The Rest Is History LIVE at the Royal Albert Hall* Tom and Dominic, accompanied by a live orchestra, take a deep dive into the lives and times of two of history's greatest composers: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven. When British novelist Robert Graves wrote "I Claudius" about the fourth Roman Emperor, he set the stage for our interview with Justine Ezarik, better known as iJustine, who is to me "The Empress of the Internet." She is a content creator for nearly two decades who has over a billion views on her YouTube channel, and even has young fans who were not yet born when their parents started watching her. We sought to understand the personal and professional trajectory that led to her becoming such an authority on technology and an inspiration to so many. We learned that passion and balance are central themes of her life. Firstly, technology is iJustine's first love. She observes that, "Today's technology is so accessible that we can do really anything we want, if we have the will to do it." This promise lights her up, and powers the fire of her hard-driving work ethic across all her varied interests. Secondly, there is balance - the Tao - the middle way between two extremes. Justine works hard, but also plays hard. She used to be very public about her life, but has now dialed that back to reclaim some of her life for herself. Consequently, she rediscovered authentic fun from what had become "fake fun." There are troubling aspects about social media, but so too there are amazing aspects that grace those who can strike the balance and curate their consumption carefully. The same goes for Artificial Intelligence (AI) - there are negative uses while at the same time there are wondrous uses. She cautions against becoming too alarmist. Seeking to avoid labels, stay positive, channel creativity, champion access and maintain balance, iJustine - The Empress of the Internet - shows the way. Join us to learn how she does it all.

Ladies n' Genminminmin (er, min...) please welcome Actor, TV Personality, Pantomime Dame, Celebrity &  Legend, Christopher Biggins aka "The Biggins" to the show!An absolute delight & pleasure to welcome a real live "National Treasure" to the Good Listening To 'Clearing'!  Biggins (as we well know!) is a British Actor, Media Celebrity,  Compere & 'Grand Dame' of Pantomime. He officially achieved 'National Treasure' status when he won, as the Nation's favourite, "I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here!" in 2007.I refer to him here in this episode very affectionately as being a veritable 'sofa cushion' as Biggins has been a 'happy appendage' to all the sofas of all of our favourite TV programme that you'd care to mention over many many years - and long may that continue!Listen with glee in true pantomime style, as Biggins explains how he has managed to get 54" in the bedroom ("Oh yes he has!) with his obsession with Television. "Is that a Plasma Screen you have in your bedroom?" Erm etc... There is nothing like a Dame and in the world of pantomime, there is no Dame quite like Christopher Biggins!  He has a Lifetime Achievement Award to prove it. "Oh yes he does!"  Now in his early 70s, Christopher has been performing in pantomime for 50 years. When he first entered Dame land  in Darlington all those years ago, the ticket price was under two bob (less than 8p in today's currency). However Biggins as the star of the show was rewarded more like a professional footballer!Perhaps that's why Christopher Biggins' dream car and 'Clearing' is riding around in a Bentley Continental convertible! Indeed this podcast is conducted with Christopher Biggins in the back and with me Chris Grimes as his imaginary Chauffeur!Biggins is inspired by the wit and wisdom of the late Oscar Wilde. One particular Wilde quote springs to mind after listening to this particular conversation: “I have the simplest of tastes. I am always satisfied with the best.” Christopher Biggins has had a truly fabulous life and he appreciates it wholeheartedly. His parents made sacrifices to send him to private school where Mrs Christian's elocution lessons smoothed out his West Country burr and prepared him vocally for a travelling actor's life. Whether in Birmingham or Barbados, our Christopher has worked virtually nonstop ever since. A potential petrolhead and pyromaniac, he played Nero in "I Claudius". He played the sex-crazed Vicar in Poldark. He played Lukewarm in Porridge, with Ronnie Barker and Richard Beckinsale. In Rep, in Salisbury and in Bristol, he played umpteen different characters - that was the beauty of Repertory theatre. For London Weekend Television, Biggins was co-compère with Cilla Black in ‘Surprise! Surprise!' Over the years, he has worked with many of the greatest names in the theatre, TV and film - including Cameron Macintosh, John Gielgud, Ralph RichardsTune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. Did the Romans have wargames exercises to counter barbarian armies or Persian fleets? On the armchair side watching ‘I Claudius' episode 1 there Augustus is playing a board game he calls ‘Empire' with Agrippa's two young sons. An A to Z of UK Television Drama

Quinctilius Varus, where are my eagles?!?!? Andy and Martin celebrate the BBC's classic 12-part Roman epic I, Claudius, which first aired in the UK in 1976 and starred Derek Jacobi, Sian Phillips, Brian Blessed, John Hurt and George Baker. Dramatised by Jack Pulman, from two award-winning novels by Robert Graves, I Claudius has quite rightly wowed audiences for over 40 years. The series secured Jacobi and Phillips and designer Tim Harvey BAFTAs and has been shown all over the world gaining particular appreciation in the US where it was shown as part of the 'Masterpiece Theatre' strand. A tale of love, murder and intrigue, the series charts the tempestuous reigns of four Roman Emperors and the dawn of a fifth, via the writings of the most unlikely man ever to become one himself, the lame, stammering, stuttering Claudius. Andy and Martin choose their favourite scenes and performances, go back to Graves' novels to see what Pulman missed out and even dig out some 1st Century quotes from Roman historians Tacitus and Suetonius. They also inevitably discuss that one legendary missing clip that everyone is convinced they've seen. Get that thar toga on and get yersel down t'Forum! Next Time: Jonathan Creek

Andy and Martin don their tank tops and kipper ties to go back to The University of Watermouth in 1972 where progressive sociology lecturer Howard Kirk (Antony Sher) eagerly awaits the new academic year with all its promise of conquests, protests and political shenanigans. Malcolm Bradbury's 1975 novel was adapted for TV by Christopher Hampton in 1981 finding a 10pm slot on BBC2 where it shocked, provoked and possibly titillated a newly Conservative Britain. They find much to enjoy therein as they consider the fading socialist dream of the 70s, the lens of a 1981 perspective on a 1975 novel (which itself is a lens on a 1972-set narrative), its treatment of sexuality and gender politics, and the glorious accuracy of what might just be the most perfect committee meeting ever filmed, A fantastic supporting cast included Geraldine James, Sir Michael Hordern, Isla Blair, Paul Brooke and Miriam Margolyes. Authors Alan Dean Foster, Spider and Jeanne Robinson, David Drake and John Ringo are joined by Doctor Travis S. Taylor (rising author and noted scientist) and Peter Stampfel (professional editor and performing musician). Hosted by Stephen Euin Cobb, this is the August 1, 2006 episode of The Future And You. [Running time: 150 minutes] --- Topics include: [1] News briefs on: an invisible form of online shopping fraud; the fact that this program The Future And You is now a finalist for a Parsec Award; and two paragraphs from Cory Doctorow's brilliant commentary entitled: Science Fiction is the Only Literature People Care Enough About to Steal on the Internet. [2] Alan Dean Foster describes his view of the future and how it relates to his many novels of science fiction and fantasy. He also reveals how you can find a secret Easter egg hidden on his website. [3] Spider and Jeanne Robinson describe their courtship and collaboration, as well as their vision of the future which is distilled in their Hugo and Nebula award winning Stardance trilogy; a vision which embraces and expands upon transhumanism by describing what we as a species may transform ourselves into next. Spider also explains how he expects humanity to create Heaven retroactively. [4] Peter Stampfel (submissions editor at DAW books and a performing musician) provides an unflinching insider's look at the terrible and wonderful trends within the music business; especially concerning recording contracts and performing live before an audience. As a bonus, we also hear another song from his album: a bouncy Glenn Miller number called Elmer's Tune. [5] Chapter nine in our serialization of the novel Bones Burnt Black. [6] David Drake who reads and translates ancient Latin for fun and relaxation, discusses lessons from antiquity; similarities between the USA and ancient Rome; and one of the host's (Stephen Euin Cobb's) favorite British miniseries: I Claudius. Stephen also asks David how he thinks the USA might meet its eventual and inevitable end. After all, someday the USA, like the Roman Empire, will no longer exist. [7] John Ringo makes a serious case for his conviction that global warming is a scientific hoax perpetrated by the desperate need of researchers for grant money, sustained through academic coercion, and fed to an accepting public by media outlets locked in an endless competition for the most sensational headline. [8] What if someone invented a Faster Than Light Drive before the end of this year? What if astronauts could get to the nearest star in a week; or any of the thousand nearest stars in a month? How would that change our world and global politics? Granted it's not likely to happen so soon. Most people figure it will take centuries before we invent FTL; if it can be done at all. But if Doctor Travis S. Taylor is correct, we may have FTL within 32 years. Within yours or your children's lifetime someone could be on their way to the stars. But then the question becomes: will these explorers speak English or Russian or Chinese?
