Episode 211 is the farewell episode for It's No Secret with Dr T., and I thought I would bring back my good friend, previous guest and long-term supporter of the podcast Jeff Peterson to help my say goodbye.  Jeff Peterson is the owner of Geneva Supply and was a guest on the show back on Episode 017 with Bill Davis, titled Drive Your Business.  In addition to bidding farewell, I did manage to draw some more business wisdom from Jeff before we hung up the microphone.  Today we discuss: Working with Amazon Helping manufacturers with Content & Brand Management  What takes to get noticed Why entrepreneurship is bullshit Intrapreneurship - the creative entrepreneurial spirit within an organisation Why you should not ask family and friends what they think of your ideas, just remember the bad singers you've seen on American Idol, someone told them they were good at singing.  Why you should have a business card. "When you're living in a world where there are many generations that are still in the working community, you cannot go hardcore just one way when it corms to networking".   BIZTANK & Kids in The Tank It's about career exploration. School is not connecting kids to the reality of life or the career paths that they will be heading into very soon after school. It's about exposing them to new possibilities. The key is to empower kids that their career decision is their decision. It's not their parents or school guidance councillor.  We need to open and expose their minds to other careers. Final Tip Don't shy away from people you know and enjoy being with and talking too. Don't think about what you're going to get to from it, just enjoy the pleasure of peoples company. Get to know people just to get to know people, nurture friendships in an old-school, business card sort of way. Don't focus on all the social media and quick online fixes (number of friends, likes, etc.). Build real relationships.  Farewell It's kind of sad to bid farewell, but you've got to know when it's time to walk away, and now is the right time.  I'd like to thank everyone that has been a guest on It's No Secret with Dr T. and all the people that have been part of the 55,000 downloads over the past 211 episodes.  There is no longer any need to write a podcast review for It's No Secret, but I do encourage you to write reviews for your other favourite podcasts. What makes this podcast episode really special is my guest is from Spain and wants to remain anonymous. He wants his work and ideas to do the talking for him, not his name.  I know some marketing professionals would tell you this goes against everything you're supposed to do, but after you listen to this episode you'll get a better understanding as to why this works for Eugene, aka. Dr Brain (not his real names) On this episode we discuss: Why he wants to remain anonymous The Brain_4_Feet Instagram Page Validating his work Why you need to Analyse, THINK & Treat Why he still makes orthotics by hand Dealing with COVID-19 in Spain  BRAIN 4 FEET Method Think WHY then APPLY Think first then share Have doubts then share Share and learn  Opportunities to Learn If you only apply what you learn at university, you will miss a lot of opportunities to learn and grow. When the patient is sitting in front of you, ask if what you've learnt applies, if not try something different.  Explain Your Treatment Using Logic Always explain to the patient WHY you’re choosing a particular treatment plan; don’t just do it without an explanation.  If you make a logical decision for your treatment and you explain it to the patient, and it does not work, the patient is going to be far more forgiving because they were in on the plan.  Saying, 'I'm doing it this way because this what I learnt at university' is not a logical reason for choosing a treatment plan.  Explaining your logic will also allow you the ability to change your reasoning, and patients will accept this.  Failures Lead To Success Experience and a large number of ongoing failures over many years will lead to a successful podiatry career. "At university were taught failure is bad, but exams do not evaluate your true knowledge, they only evaluate your memory." Grant Duong is an innovative and inspirational podiatry business leader, and he understands what is required to take your podiatry career and business from good to great. A limited mindset aims for good, but everyone can aim for great if they want it.  He is a partner in The Triumph Institute, which is a multidisciplinary business offering Podiatry, Chiropractic, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture, Law services, Academic Coaching and Cafe.  On this episode we discuss: The importance of recruiting people into your team with the same positive energy, culture and mentality. It's essential for the branding of your company.  Negative energy sucks the life and heart out of your business, which is why everyone has got to fit.  You need to innovate, implement and inspire. Universities and Associations do not teach podiatrists how to run a business or the importance of systems.  Why you need to do 'what makes you great, not what makes you happy'. Video games may make you happy, but it does not help others. You need to become the best at what you can do, as a business owner and as an employee. Selling the experience of visiting your business. You need to analyse your systems and make sure they fit with the experience. "When the business runs well, the owner is happy, and when the owner is happy, it increases morale at work, resulting in better patients experiences and better business". Using Instagram for Patient Retention Grant encourages his patients to follow him on Instagram, and he spends two or three 10-minutes blocks per day, evaluating hashtags and engaging with others on the platform.  He follows a lot of accounts with 1000 - 2000 followers because they are real, and he asked engaging question. He will create a routine of different posts Monday to Friday on the Instafeed, (general feed), usually one post per day.  He encourages using the carousel (max ten posts) Three Instagram Foundations Use it to build a more significant base with warm leads (existing patients). This increases credibility. Your credibility is useful for cold leads. People will look at your website and social pages, and when they find your IG page, your personality will ooze out. Also helps you stay in contact with your existing patient base. You can see who engages with your photos and videos, and when they do, you can reach out and enquire how they are doing. (Brilliant) Use Instagram Stories Post short 15-second videos that only last for 24 hours. They are a great way to test content or trial a post. If you get 10% or more engagement, you can post about it in your general feed. If there's no traction, don’t post about it.  On this podcast, Grant said that his Instagram name in @the_foot_mechanic; however, this has been changed to @grantfootdr. Jason Cunningham is the co-owner of The Practice, a business advisory firm in Victoria Australia, an author and media commentator on radio and television, including Network Ten's The Living Room. On this episode, we will discuss his latest book, Have Your Cake & Sell it Too - The 7 Key Ingredients of Business Success, and how podiatrists can benefit from this information and come out of the COVID-19 pandemic with all guns blazing.  We also talk about: Beginning with the end in mind, and why this is powerful. You are building a business that’s ready for sale, even if you don’t want to sell it. When a business is ready for sale, what does it look like, sound and feel like? Highly profitable Amazing cashflow A team that is a delight to work with Customers that keep coming back Runs without you Someone will one day offer you big bucks, but you’re in a position to say no. Most professional services work for themselves because they are great at what they do and think that's the natural next step. Employing people better than yourself to work with you.  Understanding the long game of building a business that’s suitable for the ultimate customers, which is the one person that is going to buy your business Why you need to start building an designing it right now, not when you think you may want to sell Hire the best podiatrists, don’t try and be the best podiatrist You need to have a STRATEGY: Most businesses don’t have a plan. It’s five years old and sits in the office draw. And no one else in the business knows the plan. You need to train your team to the plan, and it needs to be crystal clear to everyone involved.  You need to be continuously reminded of the game plan each day. How is everyone tracking to the plan? (KPI’s) it's essential to Understand Yourself You must build your mission statement and be on purpose. Who do I serve, and how do I serve them? Once again, be crystal clear. Mission statement, 20 words or less What do you stand for? (core values and culture) Final Tip Never before has collaboration be so profound and so important, we may feel disconnected, but we are very much connected, therefore the more you put into this world, the more that will come back to you, and the reverse is also true. "A Crisis requires a cool head, and we’ve never made a smart decision when we’re angry, when we’re drunk or when we panic." Dave James is a UK based Podiatrist & Business Coach, and previous guest on this podcast (Ep 007). I asked Dave to come back onto the show to talk about a topic that I know is extremely important but often avoided by many people, myself included, and that's using video to grow your podiatry business. Dave shares some straightforward tips that will give you the confidence to start shooting video almost immediately, and I know this for a fact because that's what I did straight after we did this recording. That's how simple Dave's make it all sound.  On this episode we discuss:  Why being the real you is what people need to see. Be authentic.  Shooting video is as easy as grabbing your phone, pressing record and hitting upload. Editing is not required.  If you overthink it, video is not easy, but it is still simple to do Why people don't shoot video is because they are concerned they: Sound funny Look funny And don't have anything to say Important to remember, no one sees you the same way you see yourself. The Haters When you shoot and upload a video, you're putting yourself out there for everyone to see. The people who like you will find you but so to will the people who don't like you. "You can't control what others think; you can only control what you put out there, not how people react". This is why you should never take advice from someone that is not fighting the same battle as you. If you're criticised it will be from someone that is not shooting video themselves, so do not listen to them.  It's Important To Be The Real You If there is any incongruence between you on video and you in real life it will be noticed, and it can cause an unconscious unease. People can smell when you're trying to sell something.  Patients will feel uncomfortable with you and not know why, so always be the real you on video.  ZMOT - Zero Moment of Truth Google refers to the zero moment of truth as the moment in the buying cycle when the patient, customer or client researches a product, often before the seller even knows that they exist and decides that yes, they will do business with you.  Authentic videos will help move the ZMOT along faster.  Finding Video Content  Podiatrists are often confused about what they should talk about on video and Dave offers some simple advice.  Every time a patient asks you a question, write it in a journal, no matter how simple the subject and these are the topics of your videos.  "If you see 15 patients per day, it's highly probable you will be asked 15 questions. Answer the questions; there's your video content." When you post a video: Someone may say you're a twat. Someone may say thank you very much. But someone will say can I ask you another question? And that's what you want.  It's as simple as: Deciding on your content (patient questions) Simply pick up your phone and start recording. Little to no editing, and there's no need for flashy introductions and transitions. Upload Avoid Overproduction If you overproduce your videos with intro and transitions and too much flare, it disconnects you from the person watching the video. You want them to see you as real.  You want to create a regular conversation using ordinary day-to-day words, looking around like you would in a natural conversation, that's your goal.  The more barriers you create trying to be perfect, the harder it will be for you to do.  Good Quality Sound When you are recording a video, lighting, background etc. are essential, but not as important as the sound quality. If recording video on your phone outside, be aware of the wind.  Captions are also important as a very high percentage of people watch a video without sound.  Final Things To Think About How much time have you got? How much effort do you want to put into it? What is it you want to say? And how do you want to say it? If you have any questions about this episode, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin or reach out to Dave James at hello@davethecoach.co.uk  You can also connect with Dave James via his website davethecoach.co.uk and on his Facebook page Positive Pod - Fully Booked Foot Business. Currently, Talysha balances her time between working at an Adelaide sports podiatry business and her podiatry CPD business, Kinetic Therapies, that delivers both live and online podiatry CPD content, primarily on the use of exercise therapies for musculoskeletal conditions seen in podiatric practice. On this episode we discuss: The love-hate relationship with podiatry as a student and in her first years of practice.  Burning out only after a few years. Quitting podiatry to work in a coffee shop Realisation there's no money in making coffee What it is like working with elite athletes at a specialist sports medicine clinic. Undercharging and under servicing, versus providing a premium service for a premium price. Knowing Your Numbers If you don't know your numbers, you cannot make wise decisions. What are your rebooking rates? How many come back for second appointments? Your P & L, you need to know this every month. When you know your numbers, you can use this information for coaching. The employer can be objective, not subjective. Marketing Most podiatrists have no plan or understand how marketing works, or know if it's working. You need to know who you want to attract. Who is your Ideal Patient? What is your message? Where are they? What's the message? You've got to love your staff If your team are no good, it's your fault. It's different to working with patients; it's a different relationship because you have their life's in your hands and you need to be empathetic. They will make mistakes, and they will never be 100% like you, and now and then, one of your team will shit all over you". "If you're not pissing people off your not trying hard enough." WARNING: This is an uplifting episode that will make you immediately want to achieve more. If you love wallowing in misery and negativity, do not press play.  Dr Jeffrey Tho is a Melbourne based dentist and dental business coach who represented Australia at the 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and Glasgow. This episode could not have been better-timed with all that is happening in the world right now concerning the Coronavirus.   Today we discuss: What it's like to be a Commonwealth Games athlete High performance and dedication to a goal The correlation between success in sport and life Even with hard work, there are no guarantees of success  The difference between results and processes The Badminton Podcast - Jasmine Kouch (Podiatrist) - Foot For Though, Ep:023 "As an athlete, you get so used to hard work that you assume everything you do in the future will take the same effort." You need to be results-driven, but process focused Process focused means concentrating on the things that are going to give you the results, it's the day to day things you must do each day to get the desired result. In a game each shot will win the point, each point will win the set, each set will win the match, and each match will win the competition.  Results are essential because you need to know where you're going, but if you're thinking about the results while you're playing a game (or treating a patient), you're not thinking about the game plan, the activities you need to do to make it a successful outcome.  Snapping Yourself Out of A Rut - Finding a Trigger We need to recognise the patterns of when we're falling into a negative situation or short term rut.  In sport, this is why even the best athletes have a coach. The coach will tell them precisely what to do, they can see things the athlete cannot see, but when you're your coach, you need to know when this is happening and recognise it early.  Train Certain Triggers You can train yourself to have triggers when you need them. You need to do a specific physical movement that you wouldn't normally do and then add a word, and attached to that word a feeling or emotion. You need to develop your own, and it could be as simple as taking a 10-minute walk during the day.  Changing The Lens  The trigger doesn't need to be that long or complicated; it's just about bringing up and associating a feeling or thought when you need them.  For example, if you were having a consultation with an annoying patient, but that morning someone gave you a million dollars, you wouldn't care, and this patient would not affect you at all because you're seeing the problem through a different lens. It's really just about your perspective. Every podiatry business wants more new patients and throwing thousands of dollars each month at Google Ads is not the answer. It may seem like a smart thing to do because others are doing it, but there is a better way to market your podiatry business that will save you money ($) and give you better results.  Taylor Cutler is the Head of Marketing at Podium Australia, and today we discuss how you can improve your online reputation, generate a constant flow of positive Google reviews and the benefits of using one platform to communicate online with your patients.  PODIUM is a rich communication platform that health practices use to communicate back and forth with their patients via text messages. It can be used for appointment reminders, setting appointments and generating online Google reviews. Modern Consumers and Patients Our podiatry patients are no different from other consumers, they want convenience, and they want instructions to be easy to follow. Amazon and other online retailers have taught consumers they can order almost anything and with just a few clicks of the keyboard have it delivered to their door, and they want this type of convenience across the board.  How Are Patients Finding You? Online bookings are now commonplace, yet some people still want that personal touch and prefer to talk to someone on the phone, but even these people are finding you online. They are not staring at a billboard on the side of the road and typing in your phone number.   Simple SEO If you have good SEO (Search Engine Optimisation), you’ll get more people finding you online when they search, and there are two types of SEO, Normal SEO and Local SEO.  WARNING: Some companies throw around terms like metadata to try and confuse you and make you think you need an agency, and you don't.  Smartphones - The Disruptor  The smartphone has been the biggest disruptor to how we search for information. Not too long ago if you wanted to search for a business or service, you would have to wait until you get back to your computer at home or work, but now everything you need is in the palm of your hands.  Micro-Moment (termed by Google) A micro-moment is when a person is in a moment when they WANT to BUY or DO something, and as business owners, we need to take advantage of these moments.  This is why Local SEO is way more critical than Normal SEO.  "When someone does a local search on their smartphone, 76% will visit a physical place within 24 hours of that search, and 28% of those people will make a purchase".  Google My Business Listing  When someone searches for a Podiatrist, you want to be in the top three of the local business search. Being on page one is less important these days.  How can you get in those top three spots? Relevance (are you a podiatrist, so that's easy) Distance (how close are you to the person searching) Prominence (how prominent is your business) Prominence is based around your online reputation. How many online reviews do you have and how often are they coming in? You have no control over Relevance and Distance, so the only thing you can control is your Prominence.  4 Factors with Local Search Rankings  Recency (When was the last time you received an online review) Frequency (How often are the reviews occurring) Quality (Did they leave a star rating or did they write a well-written review using keywords Google looks for, like BEST podiatry clinic) ) Quantity (how many reviews do you have) Once you understand the importance of getting reviews, you need to start inviting your patients to leave an online review, and you need to ask everyone, not just suitable patients.  How Can You Make The Process Frictionless?  The modern consumer wants the review process to be convenient and super easy to do. If there are too many steps involved, they will not do it.  PODIUM uses text messaging via their app because text messages have an open rate of 99%, and most occur in the first three minutes.  Set the Expectation You cannot just send a text to a patient asking for a review without first explaining the HOW, WHEN & WHY.  Patients have a sense of empathy and like feeling important, and if you explain what to do, they are extremely more like to leave a review.  Your Team You could have the best review process in place (like using PODIUM) and still not get good reviews because your team give poor service, so everyone on your team needs to be well trained and wants to be part of the team.  2 Things You Should Do Immediately Claim your Google My Business listing and make sure you own it and if it's not set up, create it. Just type in Google my business (This is the beginning of your local search optimisation) Make sure all your name and practice details are consistent on all online profiles and websites.  Google Ads Versus Rankings Google Ads do work, but a lot of patients will quickly move past them and look at the businesses below in order as they are ranked. What do you do when searching?  If you rank below 3.2, patients will move straight past you and onto the next listing. This episode with David M Frees is a REBROADCAST and it was chosen because the content is so friggin good. It is also the most downloaded episode on It's No Secret with Dr T. If you missed it the first time you'll be glad I'm rebroadcasting and if you did hear this episode the first time you'll be happy as well.  David M. Frees is a Trust, Estate and Wealth Preservation Lawyer from Phoenixville Pennsylvania. He is an expert when it comes to persuasion and communication, and on a personal note, Dave is one of the best communicators I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I think you’ll go back and listen to this episode numerous times because there are so many takeaway points. Here are the highlights: The first and most powerful key to being an excellent communicator, great negotiator and person of influence, is to master the art of listening to the other person. You need to quiet the demons in your head and not be thinking about what you want to say next. When you meet someone, always be looking for something to compliment him or her on, but make it genuine. “Wow, that is a smashing tie”. It takes enormous practice to listen and not automatically respond or jump into the conversation. Everyone you meet is smarter than you at something, and thinking this way sets you up in a very positive mindset right from the start. The other person will sense your positive body language and attitude towards them. You can build trust by confessing something very early in the conversation. If you’re selling a product, you may point out a flaw in certain situations, or if it’s a personal conversation, you may make an admission that may be slightly odd or embarrassing. Just don’t do it in the first 30 seconds. Some people will say that using these techniques is just manipulation, and they are correct; however, all human communication is manipulative in some way, but you need to give up the idea that it’s a bad thing. It’s your INTENT for the outcome that matters. You can manipulate negatively or positively. Where is the best place to learn more about this subject?  The language we use, when communicating, can be very powerful and influential. Saying to a child, ‘don’t spill the milk’…puts that image in their head and increases the chance of them spilling the milk. But if you say, ‘keep the milk in the cup’, that’s the image they will see. We see words as images. The tonality of your voice, the speed of your voice and your body language are far more important than the words you use. This is why Barry White was so popular with his female audience. Learning to vary the speed and tone of your voice can be very useful in certain situations. If you want to hurry people up, or slow people down use your voice. It’s essential to go back and re-listen to mentors, previous podcasts and reread books because you’ll have a different mindset year to year and you’ll pick up new things each time. When you make a deal with yourself that you’re going to do something, no matter what, you need to stick to it, but don’t stay with it if it’s not working. Sometimes it is advisable to quit. Persuasion and influence are different. Persuasion is very hard to do because it relies upon you changing someone else’s mind, but over time and by building trust, it is possible; however, influence is where to want to be. Persuasion is part of a bigger goal, and that is to become an influencer. Dave runs an event in Tempe, Arizona every October: Business Black Ops. Dave Cashley owns Dundee Podiatry Clinic in Scottland. He has a special interest in lower extremity manipulation, and this interest has led Dave to publish and lecture extensively on this particular topic. He is now studying toward a PhD.  His research is based around the treatment of neuromas, doing a parallel study of manual therapy versus steroid injections. The Best Thing About Neuromas You don’t need any fancy kit to diagnose or treat it, other professionals stay away from it, and no one outside of podiatry gets good results.  It's a common, debilitating problem, and we can make a big difference in people’s lives.  On this episode we discuss: Other treatment modalities and why Dave leaned towards manual therapy Clinical biases - Are the results you’re getting in the clinic a fluke or the real deal. Biased questioning to patients Dave explains how research questions differ from what we would typically ask in a clinical situation Minimal patient contact during research How manual therapy became an interest and his connection with other podiatrists in this area Why podiatrists should be making a decent income regardless of their area of interest. "If you have a paupers mentality, you will make a paupers wage".  If you’re struggling to make money, you need to get a mentor, and you need to change your mindset. "To find your destination you've got to get on the right bus".  Final Tip: If you do not love life as a podiatrist have a look around and make some changes. When it comes to running a successful podiatry business, it is vital to find your passion, surround yourself with the right team, and develop a mindset of success by associating with like-minded positive people.  Drs Peyman & Viedra Elison are a dynamic podiatry team that own Fixing Feet Institute in Surprise, Arizona. I recently spent three days with them in Tempe, Arizona at Business Black Ops, which is a high-level mastermind group.  I've wanted to get them on the Podiatry Legends Podcast for some time, so while I had them together in Arizona, I thought this was the perfect opportunity to capture their thought of podiatry business success.  On this episode we discuss: Choosing to live in different states to pursue their podiatry careers.  Working on an Indian Reservation in Arizona and how this has shaped Viedra's career and passion for diabetes and limb salvage. Peyman's passion for paediatric biomechanics, foot deformities and peripheral nerve surgery. Associates and culture problems - "Some people are just not trainable".  Why continuing medical education is essential, but if you want to grow a successful business and life, you've got to attend business and marketing events.  You need a positive mindset to bring it all together.  Viedra's Tip: In the early part of your career, focus on your education, not your location. You need to get out of your comfort zone.  Peyman's Tip: Find a niche market, something you enjoy and hone in on it. Every successful podiatrist, not just in business, will tell you their career and success really started to take off once that made a conscious effort to develop a positive mindset.  Jonathan Small is a UK based podiatrist and also a previous guest, Ep 006 - Work Smarter, Not Harder. I was privileged to watch Jonathan give an excellent presentation on MINDSET at the OSGO Foot & Ankle Show in Liverpool and I immediately thought, WOW, we need to talk about mindset on this podcast.   "You can achieve whatever you want to achieve but you have to be prepared to put in the work, and this needs to be backed up by a positive attitude".  On this episode we discuss:  Why Jonathon decided not to be a sheep Making a 'Positive Mindset' the norm and not the niche Many podiatrists lack mentorship and confidence in their early career, which can lead to the wrong mindset Why it's important for the profession to prosper so it looks appealing to the next generation of kids.  "Positive changes happen in your career and personal life when you’re mindset changes".  Why some podiatrist use excuses to create a mindset of poverty. Why it's easy to find evidence to back up a negative mindset if that's what you're searching for. You need to get out of your own way.  Enjoying the growth mindset journey and don't compare yourself to others. What you see if just a 'snapshot' of their success.  Working through pain-points in your career.  Team mindset will never outgrow the mindset of the business owner  Where To Start First, you need to reach out to others who will challenge you and celebrate your small wins and achievements. Next, attend conferences and find groups of people that have similar interests to you.  Attend small group workshops as negative people tend to stay away from these because there's nowhere to hide.  Read - Who Moved My Cheese by Dr Spencer Johnson  If you have any questions about this podcast, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com, or you can contact Jonathan Small at Health First Foot & Gait Clinic. Sean Pincus is from Cape Town, South Africa, and he has spent the past thirty years honing his skills in the area of sports podiatry and orthotic design. Sean understands why communication and psychology are so crucial to the management and treatment outcomes of his patient's foot and lower limb problems.  On this episode we discuss: Why he was initially disillusioned with podiatry until he understood what it is we do for people Changes in orthotic design over the past thirty years and the changes in biomechanical theory  How do you get a patient to take control and responsibility of their foot problem? It’s not your fault; it’s their fault. Psychology of handling patients "LOOK BEYOND THE FOOT there’s a squishy thing above it called a person".  What to say to who, when and how. It all comes down to experience The importance of new graduates having an excellent mentoring system and learning how to ask the right questions  University only teaches generalised questioning. It's not good enough.  Digging Deeper: Learn to follow a pathway of questioning to get to the information quickly The benefits of asking the same question twice. You often get different answers.  You will gather even more information if you read your notes back to the patient. Then start your examination.  Why jumping to early diagnosis conclusions is dangerous Is what your being told match watch you’re finding in your examination?  "Diagnoses Dictates Management" If you rush through the consultation too fast, without asking the right questions, you will also rush to a diagnosis. Rushed consults may lead to treatment failure, which results in unhappy patients and potential social media negative reviews.  You often have to get these patients back for further assessment, so in the end, you're spending time with them that you should have done from the start.  If you have any questions about this podcast episode, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com, or you can connect with Sean Pincus via his website PodiatristCapeTown.co.za   One-On-One Coaching If your podiatry business needs help to develop a marketing plan or business systems, the most efficient way to do this is with one-on-one business coaching. 149 - #4 Low-Cost Marketing Idea: In-Service Presentations

It's No Secret with Dr T.

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 14, 2019 5:48

If you want to grow your business doing in-service talks and presentations is one of the most cost-effective tactics you can use, and best of all you get to control the content and pace of the conversation.   On Episode 148 my guest Clive Maloney discussed the six vital steps required to improve your public speaking skills, and if you do a lot of public speaking, I highly recommend going back and listening to this episode.  Start Small Now, I won’t go into the six steps on today’s mini-episode, but one of the tips Clive suggested when you’re just starting, or if you’re nervous about public speaking, is to start small. And there’s no better way to start small than providing in-service talks and presentations to people, businesses and organisations that can refer people to your business. Conversation With A Plan One thing I will mention further is how Clive Maloney refers to presentations as ‘conversations with a plan,’ which is a perfect description. You are just talking with people, except for having it all planned out, even the objections. In-Service Explained If you’re not sure what I mean by an in-service presentation, let me give you an example. A Podiatrist could organise a short 15-20 minute presentation on a particular aspect of podiatry to a small group of practitioners at a local Doctors or Physiotherapy clinic. Ideally, the presentation will be on an area of interest to the Podiatrist, or about a service they want to promote. This applies to every profession or business. Don’t do a presentation if it’s of no interest and there’s no purpose behind it. If You Feel Intimidated If you feel intimidated presenting to other professionals in your industry, start with non-professionals — however a presentation for your local hairdressing salon, health food shop, and gym or accounting firm. If you want to have a successful business, you have to do things that are not always comfortable, and public speaking does fit under this heading, even if the audience is small. It's All About How You Think I have spoken to a lot of health professionals and business owners, and one common theme I hear is they want to be busier, and they want to attract more new people to their business, however, their budget is limiting their growth options. I disagree...it's not their budget that is limiting their growth options; it's their thinking. There's No Cost Yes, it costs money if you want to advertise using traditional media and even online adverts is not free; however, it costs you nothing but time to organise and provide an in-service presentation about your profession or business. Six Pillars of Marketing In both my books, It's No Secret, There's Money In Podiatry, and It’s No Secret There’ Money In Small Business I discuss the Six Pillars of Marketing.  Professional Referrers Non-professional Referrers Internal Marketing External Marketing Verbal Marketing Web-Based Marketing All marketing pillars should be used for promoting your business; however, some marketing pillars are far more expensive to implement. Pillar Number Five - Verbal Marketing  Providing in-service presentations comes under pillar number five - Verbal Marketing and most verbal marketing is relatively inexpensive, however, if you're not comfortable talking in front of people you will find this pillar challenging to build and develop. Who Is Your Business Spokesperson? But if you're serious about having a successful business, you need to get over your fear, or you need to employ someone else who can take on this role. Every successful business needs a spokesperson and if that’s never going to be you, then find someone who will be. When you get in-service presentations working for you, you’ll notice immediately the positive impact it has on your business. The more in-service presentation I did for my podiatry business, the faster it grew. Solopreneurs But what do you do if you work by yourself and can't find someone else to do the in-service presentation for you? Well, you'll have to sit back and watch your competition grow instead. On a serious note, if you genuinely have a fear of public speaking, please send me an email at tf@tysonfranklin.com and let's discuss it further. I managed to get through Primary School, High School and University without ever giving a public presentation, so when it comes to the fear of public speaking, I GET IT. 135 - 2018 Reflection (Focus On The Positives)

It's No Secret with Dr T.

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 27, 2018 9:58

In December it's quite common to start looking ahead to next year and not reflect on the year that was. There is a lot to learn and to take away if you stop and reflect.  I'd love to say this was my idea, but it wasn't. Last week I tuned into a webinar with Deb Johnstone, and it was about reflecting on the year that was, and there were three key points.  Deb Johnstone was my guest It’s No Secret with Dr T., and the episode was called Mastering Your Mindset.  Focus On The Positive Firstly – People have a habit of focusing on the negative, what they didn’t achieve throughout the year, instead of the positive things they have done. Deb asked us to consciously go through the year, month by month, and look at the highlights, and when I did this I was amazed, and I had forgotten many of my accomplishments, not all huge, but still significant. Columnist of Tropic Magazine 14 consistent monthly coaching clients New website I ran a successful event in August with Dave Frees in Cairns I got to speak in Powell River, Canada and Arizona, in the USA Started a new Podcast called Podiatry Legends, to be released in January 2019.  What I Missed Is Not Important  I had set a goal to be a guest on 50 podcasts but only managed to speak on 34, which is still pretty good.  Also, I didn’t get Richard Branson on It's No Secret with Dr T. but in hindsight I know I could have pushed harder. However, I now have a choice. Focus on the negative or focus on the positive.  2018 Week One Episode  This webinar reminded me of my first episode in 2018, which was title Was Week One A Hit Or A Miss? On this podcast, I was talking about how much did you achieve and get done in your first week back at work? Was it a productive week, or was it a complete disaster, or was it somewhere in between? Create A Personal Scorecard I was also talking about not focusing on what you didn’t do, and instead, give yourself a rating out of ten, then keep track of your score each week and why you gave yourself this score.  What reoccurring obstacles keep getting in your way and can you do something to prevent them from happening again? To change the output of your life, you need to change the input. So if you’re not getting out of life what you want, you need to make a conscious effort to change the input. Free Lessons & Gifts - Some Hurt Every challenge leaves us with a lesson or a gift. Sometimes it’s hard to see what the lesson or gift is in the moment, but it’s there somewhere. For example, you may have had a challenge at work with a team member, a family challenge, or it could have been a health or weight challenge. Regardless of what it was, look for the lessons and gifts. Sometimes there may only be lessons, but every lesson is still a gift.  Key Changes For 2019 Think about what fundamental changes you need to make in your life right now to get the most out of 2019.  I discovered the following:  I had to be more aware of my daily habits, and especially how I start and finish each day. How I begin and end a day has a massive impact on my mindset, enthusiasm and how much you get done each day. My wife Christine recently pointed out that I was looking at my phone a lot before going to bed and also again when I work up, and I have to be honest, she was right. Conscious Effort To Change  So I’ve made a conscious effort to stop these bad habits, and after a few short weeks, it has already made a massive difference in how I am performing.  I also need to be more aware of the obstacles I know are present in my life, and don’t let them, or use them as an excuse for not doing what I said I was going to do. If you’re going to go to the gym at 7 am, then get up and go. Don’t put it off and say you’ll do it in the afternoon when you know by the end of the day you’re going to be tired and won’t feel like it. Be patient, and Happy To Be a Novice – Get comfortable with it. - MOG We All Must Have Gratitude The third thing Deb discussed was to be grateful for the year as a whole. There would be a lot of people that would love to have the year you had, so be grateful you got to have it. Gratitude is the closest state to love. When you look at all three points:  Achievement and highlights Lessons and gifts Be grateful for the year as a whole It does put 2018, and every other year prior, into PERSPECTIVE.  I hope you’ve had a great 2018 if you have any questions, please send me an email tf@tysonfranklin.com, or if you want more information on mindset coaching and personal development training I suggest you get in touch with Deb Johnstone at success@debjohnstone.com.au FREE DOWNLOAD & Book Orders: First 16 Pages of My Book – It’s No Secret There’s Money in Small Business. 115 - Using Audiograms In Your Business with Oliver Wellington from HEADLINER

Using AUDIOGRAMS will make your business stand out from the crowd, and this is what I discuss today with Oliver Wellington, co-founder of HEADLINER.  An audiogram is the easiest way to turn audio into a video, and it can be used on social media and also on your website, and with HEADLINER'S latest update, you can convert a written blog post into a video, by creatively pulling out keywords.  Three Components There are three components to an audiogram video: A single image A moving waveform animation An audio clip Headliner Marketplace If you don't know how to create an audiogram Headliner can do it for you. All you need to do is provide an image, some audio and they will put it together for you and create a fantastic video. And prices start at $1.  Just visit https://www.headliner.app/marketplace Text & Video Here's an interesting statistic from 2016: 85% of all videos viewed on Facebook are done so with the sound off. Therefore using text in your videos is important, and automatic transcription can easily be done using Headliner.  Where Should Text Be Placed In Your Video? So it's been shown that videos with text are viewed more often and for longer, but where should the text be placed on the video, and does animation make it more or less watchable. In this test animation meant the words lit up as they were being spoken, like what happens in karaoke.  Headliner performed four test videoes using text: Text at the bottom of the video Text in the middle of the video Text at the bottom of the video with animation Text in the middle of the video with animation The results showed that there was not a lot of difference between 1 & 2. However, they both outperformed 3 & 4. Why? The most significant feedback was people preferred to read at their own pace, and the words being lit up were offputting. Audiogram Usage (& Schools) Audiograms are very useful when it comes to marketing your business. Of course, they can be used on your website in blogs and on all social media outlets that allow videos, but another big user of audiograms and Headliner's App are schools.  Schools using Chromebooks and basic laptops are usually unable to edit video because their processes power is too slow, however, because Headliner is an online app they are now able to edit video easily. You can do the same.  Audiogram Video Length Most audiogram videos created are approximately 30 - 90 seconds in length, however, you can go up to 10 minutes, or if you already have your video and you want to edit it, you can upload up to 2 hours of video.  If you want a blog post uploaded and a video created, 1000 characters will equate to approximately one minute.  If you want to know more about converting text to a video you can email Oliver Wellington at oliver@headliner.app or info@headliner.app Stories As mentioned previously, using video is great for a website and your social media platforms, but another area you may consider using short videos, only 10 - 15 seconds in length, is in Instagram and Facebook Stories. These are becoming very popular, and all you need to do is provide the audio and headliner can do the rest. They also have a library of stock images and royalty free music.  Get It Done If you're not sure where to begin, go to the Headliner website and start playing around. You cannot break it.  Two previous guests on It's No Secret with Dr T., Paul Wright (Ep 050) and Adam Franklin (Ep 101) have both said, 'Done Is Better Than Perfect", so if you're waiting to become an expert before using the power of audiograms in your marketing...stop waiting and just do it.  Old-School Marketing & Promo  I asked Oliver about his marketing and promotion tactics for Headliner, and he is very keen on using old-school strategies. Just get out there and connect with people one-on-one at conferences, meet-ups and events.  Nothing beats word-of-mouth.  Improvement  Nothing is easy, and half the game is just showing up, grinding it out and not quitting. Improvement comes over time.  The best way to get new users is through your current users sharing their positive experiences. If people are not sharing your product or service with the people they know, your product or service needs more work.  Monday Morning Tip Remind yourself; you define your success. It may be money ($), or it may be just a feeling.  Connect With Oliver Wellington  You can connect with Oliver on email at oliver@headliner.app or info@headliner.app or visit Headliner Home Page. Being a new podcast series I know it’s important for the first episode to be good. I talked this over with my friend Ronsley Vaz and he said I should be the first guest on my own show. That’s not what I was expecting, but Ronsley said it's important for listeners to get to know me, what I stand for and to learn more about where I want to take this show. I hope you enjoy the first episode as much as I enjoyed putting it together. What is covered in this episode: The difference between working hard and working smart and why asking for help is one of the smartest business decisions you’ll ever make. What you can learn from watching the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championships) and apply it back to your business. It’s about focus, discipline and having a ‘never give up’ attitude. Why we need to build our ‘Resilience’ muscle and why some people give up way too early. How honest communication helps overcome personal flaws Yes, I’m a big kid, but it’s part of my Brand Personality. Everybody has certain superpowers or business strengths and you need to run with your strengths and get help for your weaknesses. You can’t do it all. What I’ve learnt by opening, expanding and selling over 20 podiatry businesses. How I halved my hours and double my income, and it wasn’t by working harder; it’s about working smart and knowing why you’re doing it. You need to understand your values. The 365 Hour Mental and Physical Challenge. It’s about mentally and physically challenging myself every day. Accountability – the more people who know your goals and what you’re aiming for, the more accountable you will become. Plan ahead and consider obstacles before you start something new. Inspiring others was never part of my life plan, but it’s definitely become a side benefit. Every podcast has a message, which is why you should try listening to various types of podcasts. A great time management idea about timing how long it takes to perform certain tasks and using this information to get more done each day. Why my podcast show is about earning more, working less and enjoying what you do each day. Marty Balin: singer/songwriter, founding member of Jefferson Airplane and hit maker of Jefferson Starship joins host Robin Milling to share 50 years of musical memories with his new CD, Good Memories. Spanning five decades, whether you grew up in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s or 2000s you'll always remember such songs as It's No Secret, Count on Me, With Your Love, and Miracles; to name a few. Marty tells Robin how they came up with the name 'Jefferson Airplane,' along with his fond memories of Grace Slick, and not so fond memories of playing Woodstock! He says the behind-the-scenes goings on at the festival were much more memorable. When Marty isn't making music he is making art. His art gallery in St. Augustine, Florida features his paintings and lots of memorabilia for sale. As a follow up to Good Memories, Balin – who is known as “The King of Love Songs” – will release The Greatest Love; a new album of original music. To say that the second coming of Christ to gather His saints will be secret, in view of clear texts of Scripture, and in the absence of any text that even hints at His coming being secret, is to deny the Bible as the Word of God.
