We now pull out the third record from this seven disk box set. A record that features a relatively unknown work AND probably one of the most famous works in music history. Talk about a dichotomy. This is music from the immortal Ludwig Van Beethoven. His symphonies live on in performances to this very day. Plus I decided to play three movements from each symphony. I thought this joint needed some classing up. So, settle in and get ready to hear the man who is said to have set music free in Volume 227: Beethoven's 4th & 5th. For more information about this album, see the Discogs webpage for it. Here is the promised Leonard Bernstein video. This is an in-between ‘extras' episode. Our episodes are normally not more than an hour in length, which means that we usually have to cut a certain amount of material in the editing. But for Episode 3, we had much more material than usual. So we kept the episode down to an hour, but decided to release an ‘extras' episode, with some of the bits we edited out. It's a bit disjointed, but we hope you enjoy it.THINGS WE MENTIONCharacter discussion:Sheila Kaye-Smith and G.B. In this episode, we talk about how the backstory of Anne and Wentworth is presented without comedy, and yet is absolutely enjoyable. #48 In this episode I open the floor to an important ingredient of great Music: the Mysterious. Music is often beautiful for reasons that we don't quite grasp, it is tricky to point at what makes a piece unique and profound. I invite you to stay open when listening to music that lets the element of Mystery take over. In this episode I will discuss and provide examples of three works by modern and classical composers.Perugia – by Roland Hanna – Apple MusicPerugia - by Roland Hanna | SpotifyPiano Sonata No. 21 in B-Flat, D. 960: II.
For a long time I've received emails and messages from people asking, and sometimes demanding, that I explore the solo piano repertoire. Other than a look at the Goldberg Variations of Bach, I've basically neglected a huge amount music, including some of the greatest works ever written. Why have I been doing this? Well, if I'm totally honest, it's been slightly out of a sense of intimidation. I'm not a pianist, and I've always been somewhat in awe of the piano and pianists. Even after spending years with this music, I still felt that I just simply didn't know the solo piano repertoire well enough to do it justice. Well, now that I've gone through ALMOST all of the symphonic standard repertoire, and now that I've started exploring the string quartet repertoire, I think it's time to throw off this sense of awe and dive right in. You might think I might not reach too high to start off, maybe an early Beethoven sonata, or a Mozart or Haydn Sonata. Well, in my opinion you've got to go big or go home, so I've decided to explore one of the towering masterpieces not only of the solo piano genre, but of all music, Schubert's Sonata in B Flat Major. This is a piece that has been described as “well-nigh perfect,” as “beyond analysis,” as including “the most extraordinary trill in the history of music,” and as “the climax and apotheosis of Schubert's instrumental lyricism and his simplicity of form.” These are just a few of the superlatives I've found in researching this piece. It was written in the last weeks of Schubert's short life, and it truly does take the listener on an unforgettable journey. There is nothing quite like Schubert's final works, and so over the next two episodes, I will take you through this remarkable sonata, a piece that Alex Ross has described as “a premature communication from the beyond.” This is a huge piece, with so much to talk about, so I've split this episode into two parts. This week we'll look at the first movement, and then in two weeks we'll cover the final three movements. Join us!
We'll focus on the "Serioso" String Quartet, No. 11 in F Minor, Op. 95 (1810-1811), and the "Archduke" Piano Trio, B-flat Major, Op. 97 (1815).
On this episode we are celebrating The Avett Brothers' Emotionalism with a song by song deep dive into every track. 1. “Die, Die, Die" 2. "Shame" 3. "Paranoia in B-Flat Major" 4. In 1773, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach sat down to record his life story. He'd been asked to write it down for a new book on German music and it made him one of the first composers to produce an autobiography. This week, Donald Macleod follows the composer's story, using Bach's own account as his guide. Bach's words provide fascinating insights into the things he considered most important but it's possible that what he chose to leave out is even more revealing.Music Featured: L'Aly Rupalich, Wq 117 No 27 Symphony for Strings and Continuo in G major, Wq 182 No 1 Fantasia for keyboard in C major, Wq 61 No 6 Trio Sonata in B minor, Wq 143 Keyboard Concerto in G major, Wq 3 Symphony in G major, Wq 173 (1st mvt) Trio Sonata in A Minor, Wq 148 Sonata in A minor, Wq 132 (1st mvt) Cello Concerto No 3 in A major, Wq 172 (2nd & 3rd mvts) Sonata in E minor, Wq 49 No 3 Magnificat in D, Wq 215 (1, Magnificat anima mea Dominum; 5, Fecit potentiam; 10. Juzo Itami's “ramen western” TAMPOPO is… just a delight. The lines that separate class, sex, and generations are broken through the lens of food in vignettes that surround a sweet, satisfying A plot. The mundane and universal is elevated to indulgence through the presumption of taboo, with each character's indulgence – a meddling supermarket crone, a wealthy, browbeaten elder, a gangster's hedonist escape – building them as more human than caricature. Mozart composed his first string quintet at age 17 and his last in the year of his death, so it might seem that he wrote string quintets across the span of his career, but that is not the case. His first quintet was a foray into new territory for the young composer, and then Mozart set the form aside for fourteen years — his final five quintets were all created in the last four years of his life. As such, they represent some of his most sophisticated musical thinking. They offer wonderful music, exhilarating to hear (and to play!), sometimes very moving, and always very beautiful. In his quintets, Mozart did not set out to make the viola the star, but the addition of the extra viola offered him a broader canvas and unlocked new possibilities. His quintets generate a richer, fuller sound….and they offer increased opportunities to contrast different groupings of instruments and sonorities….(two of these quintets are among his longest chamber works, longer in fact than any of his symphonies).TracksDisc 1String Quintet in B-Flat Major, K. 174 (26:43) I. Brahms pt. 15a: we return to the life narrative of our great composer, picking up where we left him in the summer of 1879 adding the finishing touches to his D major violin concerto which he had written for and with the advice of his great friend, Joseph Joachim. This was the high point of their friendship and musical partnership; but for how long would the happy feelings last, and if they didn't, how long would it take Brahms to reclaim them? Sarah Devonald chooses her favourite recording of Schubert Symphony No. 5 in B flat major, D. 485. When he wrote his fifth symphony at the age of 19, Schubert was working unhappily as an assistant teacher in his father's school. But he was nevertheless on a compositional roll with songs, chamber music and four other symphonies to his name, all of which were performed by amateur and professional musicians made up from family and friends. This genial, small-scale group gave the 1816 premiere of the symphony in the home of Otto Hatwig, violinist in Vienna's Burgtheater orchestra. And the jolly music seems to echo that cheerful ensemble, Schubert picking up from the classical models of 25 years earlier, seemingly oblivious to Beethoven's decade-plus of ground-breaking musical developments that were soon to become so influential.
“My first album for Deutsche Grammophon stems from a desire to share my love for Baroque music,” says rising-star French guitarist Raphaël Feuillâtre. Visages baroques, presents music by J.S. Bach and his French contemporaries Forqueray, Rameau, Royer and Duphly. The carefully curated programme translates works mostly conceived for solo harpsichord into the colourful soundworld of the guitar. They are performed by the first guitarist signed to DG in many years, an artist hailed as “a tremendously versatile and sensitive player” (Classical Guitar). Donald Macleod presents another selection of composers who are most famous for a single work. Last Easter, Composer of the Week explored the lives of ten composers whose music we adore but mainly only for a lone composition. This week, Donald Macleod makes a second selection of classical ‘One Hit Wonders' - ten more composers who have been catapulted into the mainstream thanks to the surprising popularity of just one of their pieces. He's joined by pianist and music director, Yshani Perinpanayagam, to uncover these composers' stories and to share examples of their best music. We'll hear the familiar hits alongside plenty of captivating music that's less well-known. Music Featured: John Cage: 4'33'' (extract) John Cage: Hymns & Variations: Hymn A (After W. 有人说,帕格尼尼的双手和灵魂,被撒旦掌握了。 包含曲目:0:26- Moses Fantasy - Moses Fantasy (摩西幻想曲)6:28- Caprices for Violin, Op. 1 - No. 13 in B-Flat Major 8:00- Caprices for Violin, Op. 1 - No. 24 in A Minor (A小调第24号小提琴24首随想曲,作品1)12:28- Violin Concerto No. 2 in B Minor, Op. 7 - III. Beethoven – The Late Sonatas Opp. 101 & 106 marks the completion of Maurizio Pollini's survey of the five late piano sonatas. His landmark 1970s recordings of these works were recognized at the time with a Gramophone Award. A few years ago the pianist decided to revisit the five sonatas, and in 2019 made an acclaimed second recording of the final three at the Herkulessaal in Munich. Now he has returned to the same hall to record Opp. 101 and 106 – among the most technically challenging and musically adventurous works in the concert repertoire. Deutsche Grammophon will release his new album today. The quixotic nature of Beethoven's A major Sonata, Op. 101 and the complexities of the “Hammerklavier” Sonata, Op. 106 offers infinite scope for interpretation. “Every Beethoven piano sonata is a different world,” observes Maurizio Pollini. “He finds a different character in each one, from the first to the last. Each is unique.” The A major Sonata, he adds, “is very free”. Drafted in the summer of 1815 and completed the following year, its four movements are markedly different in style and substance from those of the composer's earlier sonatas for piano. “It's a great challenge to understand and play it,” says Pollini. The scale of the challenge, however, pales beside that set by Beethoven in the “Hammerklavier” Sonata. The work was so difficult that it remained unperformed in public following its publication in 1819 until the young Franz Liszt showed the way seventeen years later at Paris's Salle Érard. Pollini describes it as the “greatest Beethoven sonata”. Its slow movement alone is almost as long as all four movements of its companion piece on the album. “You can think also of the funeral march of the ‘Eroica' Symphony – these are perhaps the two greatest movements Beethoven ever composed,” suggests the pianist. The transition into the fourth and final movement's fugue, a sublime Largo, dissolves ordinary perceptions of time and space as if opening the door to an otherwise inaccessible spiritual dimension. It prepares the way for a three-voice fugue sustained and developed over a sequence of contrasting episodes that combine to lift the music out of its historic context and leave it sounding fresh for all time.Track Listing:1 Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 28 in A Major, Op. 101: I2 II3 III4 iV5 Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 29 in B-Flat Major, Op. 106 Hammerklavier - I. All music credits to:1. 12 German Dances, D790: No. 9 - 内田光子, Franz Schubert2. 3. In this episode, we read Chapters 40 to 45 of Mansfield Park. We talk about the plot of a girl brought up in privileged circumstances returning to her family, Mary's letters and how Fanny responds to them, the success of Henry's visit, Edmund's letter to Fanny, and Tom's illness. We discuss the Price family (with a slight digression into the idea of disposition and principle), then Ellen talks about servants and Harriet looks at how adaptations and modernisations treat these chapters.
