Cath and Jeremy Brown on balanced partnerships, considered designs and Feldspar's commitment to heritage crafts

Cath and Jeremy Brown are the couple behind the beloved design brand Feldspar Studio (@feldsparstudio), known for its useful everyday items, made properly by the careful hands of master craftspeople in their two workshops in England. The couple talk to Anne, who supported them early on as a consultant, about their early careers, how the two met (a very romantic story) and explain how they left London for Devon on a whim after Cath got pregnant with their first son, Milo. They also relay to Anne how they got their hand into ceramics and how, not much after, they decided to turn this creative experiment into a bona fide company. Jeremy is used to wearing many different hats, with a background in art and design from Goldsmith's College and an expertise in woodwork from an earlier time. He also worked for the UN and later the International Trade Center (part of WTO) with ethical and sustainable artisans workshops in remote communities. Meanwhile Cath went from the art world to architecture, building schools in her last job. Both are obsessed with having total control over the design, production and packaging of their products, and the pair, balanced in their skill sets, explain how they split the work between themselves but ultimately make all their decisions together. Their famously ‘wonky' products are considered designs, as Cath explains, made mindfully for superior enjoyment — like the dimples in their coffee mugs or the perfect pour of their teapot. The two are equally excited at the idea to continue to grow the product range while committing to work with labour-intensive crafts that are currently endangered in the UK. With the goal of continuing to make things by hand, the Feldspar duo offer a fresh approach to old materials, creating designs to outlive the owner — true objects for life. Jeremy and Cath also tell Anne about the importance of regularly reevaluating their lifestyle as the company grows, so that they stay true to their priorities: spending time with each other and with their kids. Cath then shares the story of her Neapolitan great-great-grandpa's cookbook and chats to Anne about the studio's upcoming collaborations with artist Tanya Ling. The couple end by revealing their dream future for Felspar, a holistic experience which they jokingly describe as ‘Google, but for making things'. A joyful and insightful conversation with an inspiring entrepreneurial duo. Standard Bank's newly launched Africa Trade Barometer places South Africa at the top of the list of ten countries, followed by Ghana and Mozambique in second and third places. Kenya is placed fourth, Tanzania fifth, Uganda sixth, Namibia seventh, Nigeria eight, Zambia ninth, with Angola taking up the tenth position. Standard Bank, currently active in 20 African markets, aims for the barometer to become the continent's leading trade index. The Africa Trade Barometer will initially focus only on ten countries. The barometer, which Standard Bank aims to publish twice a year, encompasses comparative data on trade openness, access to finance, macroeconomic stability, infrastructure, foreign trade, governance, economy and trade finance behaviour. Qualitative and quantitative intelligence gathered from 2 400 firms representing small and medium enterprises, large family businesses, corporates and multinationals across all ten economies is analysed and then augmented with third-party sources, including the World Bank, International Trade Center, and individual countries' central banks. The report “presents one of the most comprehensive views of actual trade as experienced on the ground by real African businesses”, says Standard Bank Trade and Africa-China head Philip Myburgh. Trends and analysis gleaned should also provide insight into the broader regions that the ten study markets represent. Myburgh believes the barometer will prove to be a valuable resource for business people, students, governments, nongovernmental organisations and investors, with Africa's trade opportunity currently estimated at roughly $70-billion a year. “We expect the Africa Trade Barometer to become the leading index of African trade trends, activities and developments as Africa's small, medium and large businesses define the continent's next stage of domestic growth and regional and global expansion.”

October 25 marks the 30th anniversary of monumental legislation. President Reagan signed HR5050, also known as the Women Business Ownership Act of 1988, into law on Oct. 25, 1988. The legislation is still considered the "Big Bang" of women’s business ownership. It removed the mandatory requirement in many states for a male to sign a woman's business loan, established the Women’s Business Centers, required the Census to count women-owned C corporations, and created the National Women’s Business Council, which reports to the president and Congress. In this episode of Talking Business Now, I talked with Virginia Littlejohn at the 21C Hotel in Kansas City, Missouri, as she celebrated the 30th anniversary with the KC chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners, which was instrumental in the legislation's passage. Virginia was a primary architect of the legislation. She joins us to give a behind-the-scenes look at the effort that resulted in this game-changing legislation, it’s impact on women’s entrepreneurship and the issues and opportunities for current women business owners. Virginia is the president and co-founder of Quantum Leaps, a non-profit global accelerator for women’s entrepreneurship. She’s served as an advisor to major international institutions for several decades, she created the Global Banking Alliance for Women and WEConnect International, which links WBOs to  procurement opportunities in 25 countries. Currently, she is Global Strategist for the Women and Trade Program for the UN’s International Trade Center in Geneva, and she chairs the U.S. delegation for the Women’s 20 of the G20 countries. She’s also a U.S. delegate to the Business 20. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
